Thomas Mitchell Tunnicliffe, 82, born on July 12, 1940, in Los Angeles, CA, United States, passed away January 15, 2023. He resided in Camarillo, CA at the time of his passing. Arrangements are under the direction of Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills, California.

Thomas Tunnicliffe is a native of California. The son of Alex and June Tunnicliffe, he was raised in Burbank. He attended Burbank schools, where he excelled in sports, especially football. After high school, Tom served with the United States Army for three years. Serving in Korea, he played quarterback for the championship 32nd Infantry football team. When discharged, Tom attended Glendale College, taking courses in Business Administration. Always interested in real estate, Tom joined the profession in 1965. After working for Seb Sterpa, Realtor, he opened his own office Thomas Realty Co., Inc. and Thomas Development Company. 

A pioneer and visionary in the real estate industry, he developed the first mixed use project with retail space on the ground level and 134 senior apartments called Golden Palms which is still located at the corners of San Fernando Road and Palm Avenue. Additionally, he developed the first office condominium project on Lake Avenue in Burbank. After much success in real estate development, he retired in 2005 to enjoy family life. 

He is survived by his wife of 63 years Jane Tunnicliffe (high school sweethearts), his brother Fred Tunnicliffe, his children Tom R. Tunnicliffe and Tamara Campbell, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills on Saturday, February 18th at 2:30 pm at the Old North Church.

Joseph John James passed away peacefully surrounded by his five children, whom he loved. After years of living with Parkinson’s, he left his broken body behind. He also left behind a legacy of love, adventure, and influence. “Once a teacher, always a teacher,” he influenced thousands of students and athletes with his genuine love for kids and passion for teaching.

Joe was born October 24, 1946 to parents John William James and Ruth Lucille Thompson. As the youngest of five, he was loved by his two sisters and tagged along with his two brothers. He enjoyed his childhood in Burbank, California. As a teen, he lived for sports. He played football, basketball, track and field and softball. He played football at Burbank High school as a tight end, then at Glendale Junior College and eventually for Brigham Young University. He graduated from BYU in Physical Education. His first teaching job was at Springville High School, as a science teacher and coach–the beginning of his lifelong passion. “Coach James” was born.

He taught Human Biology and Sports Medicine at Weber High for 22 years. He later became a principal for Fremont High. He was a football coach, a golf coach, and for many years, a wrestling coach. He retired at age 55.

Joe was blessed with a full life, including several significant relationships. He shared 35 years with his first wife, Phoebe Jane Wilkins (Fournier), and together they raised their five children. He later found companionship with Pat Larsen Rhodes for ten years and then Sherry Ward. While each marriage came to an end, these relationships brought lessons and connections to his life.

Joe is survived by his five children: Erin Madsen (Michael), Lindsay Johnson (Haakon), Ryan (Heidi), Taylor (Shannon) and Dustin James (Jyl) and 21 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 2, at 2:00 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary at 1867 N. Fairfield Road, Layton, Utah. Friends may visit with family on Sunday, June 1, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and June 2, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the mortuary.

Darryl Lynn Forbes, retired Burbank firefighter and devoted community volunteer, died December 22, 2022, at the age of 79, surrounded by his loved ones.

Darryl was born in Glendale in 1943 and moved at a young age with his family to Burbank, the community he loved and where he would raise a family and spend his entire life. Darryl graduated from Burbank High School in 1961 and went on to earn an Associate Degree from Pasadena City College.

Darryl was hired by the Burbank Fire Department in 1966 as a firefighter and was quickly promoted to engineer and captain. In 1992, he became the first Fire Marshal to lead the department’s Fire Prevention Bureau on a permanent non-rotating basis. He proudly served in that position until his retirement in 2000.

Darryl never put himself first and believed his purpose in life was to help others. Aside from the fire service and his family, Darryl’s love was volunteering and serving his community. He began working with the Burbank Temporary Aid Center (BTAC) when it was founded in 1974, and it became a lifelong passion. He served BTAC for more than four decades in a variety of roles, including serving on the board of directors for nearly 20 years. Aside from BTAC, Darryl dedicated thousands of hours over many years to the Burbank Coordinating Council Holiday Basket program, Burbank Schools Disaster Preparedness program, Burbank Parent Teacher Association, Burbank Sister City Committee, and numerous other organizations. Darryl was well known throughout the community, and it was impossible for him to go anywhere in Burbank without running into people he knew. He loved catching up with friends and, of course, offering to help however he could.

Darryl is survived by his wife of 48 years Penny, son Michael and daughter-in-law Joy, daughter Kimberly, and grandson Nathan. He was preceded in death by his father, Glenn, mother, Elizabeth, and brother Glenn (“Glennie”). Never wanting to be the center of attention, Darryl requested that there be no memorial service or event to celebrate his life, just a private scattering of his ashes “someplace pretty and with a view.” Those wishing to remember Darryl are asked to make a donation in his memory to the Burbank Temporary Aid Center.

PFC Paul V. Quaglieri was a Heavy Construction Equipment Operator assigned to the 501st Engineer Company. He served a short time as a Rome Plow operator, coming to the 501st as an 11 Bravo (infantryman) in January 1969. 

On March 13, 1969, after only a brief initial training on the plow, he was participating in a jungle-clearing mission on very hilly terrain around the area of Bien Hoa in Bien Hoa Province, RVN. During the operation, PFC Quaglieri’s plow slipped off a ridge and overturned several times as it plummeted to the bottom of a steep ravine. There were no seat belts in the plow to restrain him. His body was later found lying within the separated and mangled remnants of the plow’s steel cage where it had settled amongst the wreckage.

Kathy “Tink” Brown went Home to Jesus on November 2, 2020 at age 59.

Kathy was born to Marilyn Ellis on December 19, 1960 in Tempe Arizona. She attended Glendale Community College and obtained a Degree in Nursing, graduating top of her class in 1995 and started her career with John C Lincoln Hospital as an Emergency Room, RN. She furthered her education and received her BSN from Grand Canyon University in 2010. She excelled at the RN position and was eventually promoted to Prehospital / Law Enforcement EMS Coordinator for JCL North Mountain Hospital, working in that position until her surgery.

Kathy was a dedicated, loving mother, stepmother, grandmother and wife. Friends and Family were extremely important to her, but she cherished her children and grandchildren more than can be described. Her love for her babies was a trait that was handed down from her mother to her. Over the years, she had gained an unwavering faith in Jesus. She absolutely loved attending Church at CCV Peoria and enjoyed every second of services there with her family.

Kathy joins her mother Marilyn Ellis in Heaven.

Loris was born August 1, 1971 in Isfahan, Iran to John and Artemis Yadegarian. He moved to the U.S. in November 1989 when he was 8 years old, initially living in Rancho Palos Verdes for two years and then moving to Burbank, California where he attended Burbank High School. 

He graduated with an undergraduate degree in Chemistry from the University of Southern California. He attended Temple University in Philadelphia where he earned his Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine and practiced the past 20+ years as a Podiatric Foot & Ankle Surgeon in Van Nuys, CA. 

He was diagnosed with cancer in August of 2024. Loris took his last breath on February 28, 2025 surrounded by the love of his sister, girlfriend, family and friends. While he was taken from this life too soon, he left a lasting mark on this world.

Joan M. Minton Sommers, 57, died September 6, 1998, at her residence.

A native of Chicago, she was born November 16, 1940, to Ralph L. and Joan M. Garrity Minton and had lived in Dayton for the past five years, coming from Burbank, California. Her parents preceded her in death.

Surviving are husband, Lewis L. of Dayton; sons, Erik Bush of Chicago and Kevin Bush of Jacksonville, Illinois; daughter, Carolyn Bush Gaxiola of Belleville, Illinois; stepson, Herbert Sommers and stepdaughter, Loreen Prado, both of Ojai, California; brother, Ralph Minton (Location Unknown); and seven grandchildren. A memorial service was held Saturday at the church.

Cremation will be at Walton's Carson Sierra Crematory, under the direction of Capitol City Cremation and Burial Society, both of Carson City. A memorial is being established with American CancerSociety, P.O. Box 21775, Carson City 89721.

She was born on September 28, 1961, in Los Angeles, California to the late Haywood and Virginia Blum Brown. Terrie was a traveling CNA with the Principle Company. She had a tender heart and loved caring for people, especially people that were mistreated or abused. Terrie had a big heart. She loved attending parades in California and participated in many as a baton twirler. Terrie loved her family dearly.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James White; grandson, Weston Nordstrom; and her brother, Billy Brown.

She is survived by her 4 children, Virginia “Ginnie” Chaney (Bradley), Tamara Mielke, Nicholas Nordstrom (Katlyn), and Coltin Hildreth (Matiya); and her 4 grandchildren, Taylor Chaney, Hailey Chaney, Helen Nordstrom, and Kyro Hildreth. There will be no formal services or visitation.

Richard Allison Shrum passed away  May 4, 2025, at the age of 81, in his home in Moses Lake, Washington. Richard was born March 22, 1944, in Van Nuys, California, and grew up in Burbank, California.

Hardworking and dedicated to his education, Richard was the first Shrum family member to graduate from Long Beach State with a bachelor of science in engineering. He began his career as an industrial engineer with Kaiser Steel and finished his career as a project manager at Southern California Edison.

Richard married the love of his life, Phyllis, on Oct. 23, 1993. They shared many adventures in life, including traveling the world and seeing places like Italy, Ireland, Hawaii, Mexico, Canada and many more.

Upon retiring from Southern California Edison in 2003, Richard and Phyllis moved to Moses Lake, Washington, purchasing a lakefront home. Here, they made many memories as the lake house was often a gathering place for family, friends, and loved ones. Favorite activities included spending hours on the lake fishing, boating, pulling the grandkids on inner tubes and jet-skiing.

All who knew Richard described him as clever, kind, wise, goofy and caring, and he was a father figure to many. He spent his time exploring the outdoors, golfing, fishing, boating, gardening and cooking.

Richard is preceded in death by his mother, father and two brothers.  

He leaves behind his wife, sister, nieces, nephews, child, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and many other adopted family members who called him "Dad," "Papa" and "Santa."

His life will be celebrated at Alliance Church, 1100 N. Grape Drive, Moses Lake, Washington, on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at 2 p.m.

Julie passed away from a sudden illness in Reno, Nevada at the age of 73.

Julie was raised in Burbank, CA and attended school there until she moved to Kailua, Oahu, Hawaii, where she graduated from high school in 1967. She attended college in Southern California, completed her Bachelors degree at the University of Nevada, Reno campus.

Julie worked in many fields, banking, marketing, sales. Her last employer was the State of Nevada, Department of Education and retired in 2016.

After her retirement she developed a passion for music, she loved to play the conga drums and tambourine, sitting in and singing back-up at various venues in Carson City and Virginia City. Life was a party and she wanted to be part of it.

Julie had a host of hobbies besides her music, she loved art, stained glass, and cooking. She was a devout Christian, she enjoyed her bible study group and spreading the word of Christ to everyone she met.

A private family service will be held in her honor at a later date to share the memories of her life and the fun times we all had with her.

She is survived by her daughter Heidi Hauk and granddaughter Carina Hernandez both of Long Beach, CA. Brothers Jerrold Powers (Mokihana) Honolulu, Hawaii, Jeffry Fear (Donna) Kailua Kona, Hawaii, Sister Janice Mason (Jeff) Kamuela, Hawaii. Life partner, Rick Oliver and his children Kevin Oliver and Rebecca Martinez (Ricky) grandsons; Ricky Jr., Noah and Benny of Sparks, NV.

If we can take anything away from Julie's life it would be to keep an open mind about others and their daily personal struggles. Be kind.

Heartbreaking News - Mendi Enochs Leggett of Burbank High Class of 1980 passed away in a car accident in Texas a few days ago. The condition of her husband Danny, who attended JBHS, is currently unknown. Mindi is survived by her older sister Eddy Enochs and brother Dale. Her parents were the owners of Enochs Muffler. My sincerest condolences to her family, prayers and healing thoughts for Danny Leggett.

Austin experienced a devastating crash on Lost Creek Boulevard, resulting in one fatality and two critical injuries. The incident highlights ongoing road safety issues in the city, marking the 23rd fatal crash of 2025. As the community mourns the loss, attention turns to the importance of vigilant driving and road safety awareness.

In a sobering turn of events, the city of Austin was rocked by a devastating crash this past Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred at around 2:35 p.m. on Lost Creek Boulevard, specifically in the 1100 block near the intersection with Loop 360. In a situation that no one wants to face, one life was tragically lost while two others sustained critical injuries.

The person who lost their life in this heart-wrenching incident was identified as 63-year-old Mendi Leggett. Despite the best efforts of Emergency Medical Services (EMS), who rushed to the scene and attempted life-saving measures, Leggett was pronounced dead at the spot. It’s a painful reminder of how quickly things can change and how precious life truly is.

Meanwhile, two other adults who were in the same vehicle as Leggett were transported to St. David’s South Austin Medical Center. Fortunately, after receiving immediate medical attention, their injuries were later deemed non-life-threatening. While they remain in recovery, their situation highlights the unpredictable nature of road safety.

Details of the Crash

The crash involved two vehicles, with Leggett and the two injured individuals in one vehicle, while the other vehicle’s driver and passenger emerged unscathed. It’s reassuring to know that the driver of the second vehicle cooperated fully with investigators and was confirmed not to be impaired at the time of the crash. Nonetheless, the community is left reeling from the emotional toll of the day.

Impact on Traffic and Safety

As a result of the incident, southbound Loop 360 faced shutdown for several hours, causing disruption for drivers in the area. The highway was reopened later that evening, but the impact of such tragic events echoes far beyond just traffic flow. It invites a greater conversation about road safety and the importance of vigilance while driving.

Man Thrown From Motorcycle, Killed

A 48-year-old Van Nuys man was killed when he was thrown from a motorcycle on a transition road in Mission Hills, the California Highway Patrol reported Friday.

Bruce Watkins apparently lost control of his motorcycle at 7 p.m. Thursday while riding at high speed on the elevated transition road from the westbound Simi Valley Freeway onto the southbound San Diego Freeway, Officer Dave Grajeda said.

The motorcycle crashed into a retaining wall and Watkins was thrown to the pavement, breaking his neck. He was found dead at the scene by a passing motorist. CHP officers found a helmet near the motorcycle but were unsure whether Watkins had been wearing it.

Grajeda said the accident was still under investigation, but no other vehicles were believed to be involved.

Edward Francis Lande, II, 78, of Montrose, California passed away on November 13, 2014. Born to Edward and Eva Lande in Detroit, Michigan, Edward moved to California in 1952 and graduated from Burbank High School. 

He worked as a stock broker for many years, then in air conditioning sales which lead to a 25 year career in the HVAC Installation & Service industry. He founded Lande’s HVAC Inc. and built it into a well-known and respected part of the construction industry.

Edward is survived by his daughter, Desiree Bilich of Martinez, California, his two sons Eddie and Greg, and three grandchildren. He was a wonderful father and will be greatly missed by family and friends. Services will be held Saturday December 6th, 11 a.m. at Mission Hills Catholic Mortuary, Mission Hills.

Kenneth Edgar "Eddie" Lowman, BHS '58, suffered a stroke at his home in July, and passed away in August at a rehab facility. Ed was 82. After BHS Ed attended and graduated from UCLA, and remained a faithful lifelong UCLA football fan attending most home and away games.

Ed lived most of his life on Sunset Canyon Dr in Burbank in a home built by Ed's grandparents, Edgar Lowman and his wife. His father, Kenneth Lowman, lived about three houses away on Sunset Canyon Dr.

Ed and his first wife had three children, Kellie (BHS '79), Kevin (BHS '81), and Kenny (BHS '82). Ed's wife passed away in 1966 at age 26 when the children were very young. He and his second wife had one daughter, Kasey, a Village Christian High School graduate.

Ed's memorial service was held on September 15th on what would have been his 83rd birthday. The service was at Calvary Bible Church in Burbank, where Ed attended for much of his teen years and early married life, when the church was named MacArthur Memorial Bible Church.

Ed was a BHS Centennial Committee member in 2007 and 2008 which lead up to the school's four day Centennial celebration in September 2008. Ed attended his first BHS Senior Bulldogs luncheon in March 2023 at the Burbank Elks Lodge.

Ed Lowman is survived by his wife, Debbie, his son Ken Lowman of Burbank, daughter Kasey Lowman Madeoy of Washington state, four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and his former wife Barbara Beliveau Lowman. Ed is predeceased by his first wife Adrienne LaSor Lowman in 1966, his daughter Kellie Lowman in 2009, and his son Kevin Lowman in 1994.

Former ‘Times’ Worker’s Son Dies

Robert Bennett Scott, 22-year-old son of Captain Charles H. Scott, former Times employee, died yesterday November 18, 1940 in a sanitarium after a long illness.

Born, in Cody, Wyoming, young Scott attended Burbank High School and Los Angeles City College. He was a basketball player and a protégé of Howard Hill, champion archer.

In addition to his father, now assigned to the Southern California Military District headquarters, Scott, leaves his mother at the family home, 845 N. Cordova Street, Burbank.

Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Bresee Brothers and Gillette. NOTE: He was buried at Valhalla Memorial Park in North Hollywood, California.

Carl Lane, at the age of 77, passed away peacefully, at home, on the morning of February 23, 2016, with his wife, Jo, by his side. Carl was the loving husband of Jo Topps, father of Curt Lane and Mitchell Lane, grandfather of Collin Lane, and brother of Carolyn Castelli. He will be missed by the many who loved him.

Carl was born in Los Angeles, California in 1939, son of Carl Lane and Myra Kinard, and lived his early years in Burbank, California, where he graduated from Burbank High School in 1956. Carl later graduated from Cal State LA with a Master’s Degree in Kinesiology. Always an athlete, Carl participated in and coached many sports. Carl joined the Palos Verdes Unified School District in 1963, where he was a teacher, coach and principal at the secondary level. Carl retired from his career in education, as an elementary principal, in the Lowell Joint School District in 2000.

Carl enjoyed life to its fullest. During his high school and collegiate days Carl played football and ran track. Later he completed numerous triathlons and 30 marathons, with a 3:10 personal record. He loved to body surf, play beach volleyball, water-ski, cross-country and downhill ski. Carl camped and backpacked throughout the western states. His interests in the natural world took him on trips to Alaska, Costa Rica, British Columbia, the Galapagos, and Argentina. Carl’s interest in history found him on trips to Japan, Italy, Greece, Spain, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands. Some of his last adventures included running on the ship while it crossed the Panama Canal, on his 75th birthday, trekking the Andes in Patagonia and hiking in Iceland.

Carl loved good food, music and wine. Carl’s vegetable garden produced amazing additions to the meals he and Jo so loved to cook. His tomatoes were legendary! Carl’s music collection spanned classical to jazz. Carl and Jo attended many jazz concerts, events and festivals. He especially enjoyed attending concerts and festivals at the Hollywood Bowl, where good food, music and wine could be enjoyed simultaneously! His wine collection began in earnest with the help of his friend and mentor, Bob Wilson. Carl began collecting wine in the early days of the wine boom in California. He loved to host “blind wine tastings,” with friends and then share the results with wine makers. In September 2015, Carl and Jo toured Bordeaux, France, to taste the wine. While Carl enjoyed the wines of Bordeaux, he couldn’t wait to get home to a big California Syrah!
