Guy Edward Gingell, BHS 1966

Guy Edward Gingell, BHS 1966

February 28, 1948 - July 23, 2025

Guy Edward Gingell, a father, grandfather, teacher, and coach, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2025 at the age of 77. Born on February 28, 1948, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Herbert Gingell and Ruth Smythe, Guy spent most of his formative years in Burbank, California, where he developed a lifelong love of sports, education, and community.

A proud graduate of Burbank High School, Class of 1966, Guy was a natural leader and beloved classmate. He served as captain and quarterback of the B squad football team, was crowned Homecoming King, and was affectionately voted "Class Flirt" by his peers -- a title he wore proudly. Guy was always holding court and telling a joke.

In 1971, Guy married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Miller and in 1981, they welcomed their daughter Shannon. Guy embraced fatherhood with the same energy he brought to his teaching and coaching career, often having Shannon as his assistant manager of his many teams, traveling to Hawaii, San Francisco and many other places for tournaments.

Guy's professional calling was in education and coaching. After spending several years snow skiing and water skiing in Lake Tahoe, he began his career at Harvard-Westlake School. After relocating to Washington State in 1979, Guy continued to shape young lives at Lakeside School and later Overlake School in Seattle and Redmond. A gifted and passionate coach, he led teams in football, basketball, and lacrosse. In the 1990s, he founded Lacrosse Northwest on the Eastside, helping to grow the sport he loved and mentoring countless young athletes along the way.

In 2011, Guy moved to Walla Walla, Washington, to be closer to Shannon and his two grandchildren, Hadley and Jameson. In Walla Walla, Guy continued his commitment to community service as president of the Walla Walla Sheriff's Foundation from 2014 to 2015. Under his leadership, the foundation helped secure police K-9 units and worked to reduce gang membership in the Walla Walla Valley—efforts that reflected his lifelong dedication to safety, mentorship, and service.

Guy will be remembered for his infectious sense of humor, his booming voice on the sidelines, and his belief in the potential of young people. He touched countless lives through his teaching and coaching and his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

He is survived by his daughter Shannon (husband Bowe), grandchildren Hadley, Jameson and Jackson, his beloved dog Annie, many nieces and nephews in California, and countless former students and athletes.

A private celebration of Guy's life will be held at a later date at Zephyr Cove on Lake Tahoe. "Coach Gingell" was truly one of a kind, and he will be missed.

Liver transplant recipient Chris Hays dead at 43

BURBANK - Chris Hays, a former Burbank resident who received a liver transplant earlier this month, has died. He was 43.

Hays, who died January 20, 1999 at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, was born in Los Angeles. He was a Burbank resident for 22 years before moving to Canoga Park in 1961. He was a graduate of Burbank High School, Class of 1974. He was employed by a free-lance photographer for seven years.

Hays, who had hemophilia, a congenital blood disorder, served on the board of the Hemophiliac Foundation of Southern Califoria.

He had end-stage liver disease for three years, the result of being infected by hepatitis C in the late 1980s during blood tranfusions. He also contracted HIV in 1982 due to blood transfusions.

Hays, who was placed on a donor list in May 1998, underwent a liver transplant January 7 at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The hospital was the only one in the country that would perform his liver transplant due to his HIV infection, said his sister, Mary Hays.

"My brother would have had morechance for survival if he had gotten a donor sooner," said Hays. "They're aren't enough organ donors. People should sign an organ donor card and tell their family members they're donors."

Mr. Hays is survived by his wife, Rebecca; sisters, Terry HaysHorner, Carolyn Hays Hensley and Mary Hays; father, Luverne, of Burbank; neice, Elizabeth Hensley; and nephew, David Hensley.

Pamela Ann Grueter Dito, BHS 1972

Pamela Ann Grueter Dito, BHS 1972

September 21, 1954 - February 2, 2025

After spending Friday surrounded by her granddaughters, Mom unexpectedly left us on February 2nd, 2025 at our home in San Mateo where she had lived for almost 40 years and raised four children. She was a strong woman and a two-time Breast Cancer survivor.

Mom was born in Muskegon, MI on September 21st, 1954. She grew up in Burbank, CA and graduated from Burbank High in 1972. Adored by all who knew her, she was Head Cheerleader, Pep Squad Leader and Homecoming Royalty. Mom moved to the Bay Area in the late 1970s and has lived here ever since.

She was preceded in death by her father Robert Grueter, her mother Hilda Grueter (nee Pohl), brother Corby Grueter and brother Robert Grueter. She is survived by her brother Barry Grueter (Carmela) and niece Lindsay Gruschow of Senoia, GA (brother Corby's daughter).

Mom now awaits her husband of 42 years Steve, sons Dominic, Scott (Heather), Danny (Kryssa), and daughter Felicia (Kevin).

She raised four active kids, carting them between school, sports and appointments all while working at United Airlines. Probably every kid from elementary school to high school rode in, or recognized our big green van known as "Pam's Van".

Mom has four grandchildren whom she showered with love, affection and treats: Kamila (7), Sawyer (7), Kamden (5), and Kambelle (3). Oma, as she was known to her grandkids, was the best grandma a kid could ask for. She will be greatly missed and leaves a void that will never be truly filled. She will surround them with precious memories and remain in their hearts.

After we were grown, Mom was the quintessential animal lover and lived every day for her dogs. Most recently she was mother to Axel and Darla and grandma to Leo (all three mini dachshunds). She was a regular at Seal Point Dog Park, and on the paths between Seal Point Park and Bridgeview Park on the shore of the San Francisco Bay. You could also find her at dachshund meetups in the Bay Area. She is reunited with her beloved dog Beauregard (basset hound) from childhood, and these dear pets we had growing up who all loved mom unconditionally: Karl (mini dachshund), Milli (English bulldog), Juno (labradoodle), Tiger (tabby cat), Penny (black lab), and Mr. Turtle (turtle).

For 30 years she worked as a Gate Agent at San Francisco International Airport where she helped countless travelers on their journeys. The majority of that time was with United. With a friendly face, quick mind, beautiful smile, and natural instinct to help others, she excelled at her work and took great pride in what she did. She was beloved and trusted by her coworkers, with whom she remained friends and saw regularly in retirement. She stayed active in retirement by providing comfort, companionship, food, treats and support for pets whose parents were away. She was a trusted petsitter who went above and beyond to ensure that pets were cared for and comfortable.

It’s difficult to summarize all the things Mom loved. She loved travel, baking, jigsaw puzzles, trying new foods and going out to eat. She loved making candles and often gave them as gifts to friends and family. She loved Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks, both of which she saw in concert recently. She loved the TV shows Big Bang Theory and Expedition Unknown. She loved her Agatha Christie mysteries, Paranormal shows, and PBS Masterpiece programs. She was an avid watcher of all sports, and yes, even professional wrestling! She loved watching TV during quiet evenings while making dinner and relaxing with us and the pets. She loved going to the movies with her grandkids, watching their performances and taking pictures of the silly things they did with her. She looked after her kids, making sure we were fine and healthy and that we got home safely. She cared for us so much and so constantly that the true magnitude is only felt now that she is gone.

Growing up and sailing with her family on the beaches of Southern California connected Mom to the ocean. She loved it and sought the water wherever she lived and traveled. She would often say how much peace it brought her to be near a body of water. Her remains will ultimately join those of her parents and brother Corby in the Gulf of Mexico off Anna Maria Island in Florida. Although her home was here in California, she yearned for the warmth, sunshine, and beaches of Florida. We are joyous that she will finally live her dream.

Please join us in celebrating our beautiful Mom on Saturday, February 15th, 2025 from 1pm-5pm at the San Mateo Garden Center (605 Parkside Way, San Mateo, CA 94403).

In lieu of gifts, please consider making a donation to the Peninsula Humane Society.
