SSGT James Marvin Ball, BHS 1961, Vietnam
James Marvin Ball, BHS 1961, Vietnam
During September 1970, the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division conducted offensive operations in their assigned area of responsibility west and south of Da Nang in Quang Nam Province, RVN. Their primary mission was to defend the Da Nang vital area military complex. At approximately 9:40 AM on September 11th, two Marines from H Company, 2/1 found a booby trap placed at a waterhole 100 yards from their platoon patrol base located eight kilometers (4.8 miles) northwest of Dien Ban. The boobytrap was an M33 grenade in a C-rations can with an 18-inch tripwire suspended across the trail. The Marines removed the boobytrap and carried it towards their patrol base when they were intercepted by a platoon sergeant, SSGT James M. Ball, who took custody of the device and moved to a nearby berm to dispose of it.
His plan was to remove the grenade from the can and throw it over the berm. The platoon radio operator and corpsman observing Ball from 40 yards away admonished him not to separate the grenade from the can because the delay mechanism may have been removed. Ignoring their warning, the grenade exploded six feet from Ball after pulling it from the can. He was critically injured, receiving fragmentation wounds to the neck, chest, abdomen, right shoulder, back, and right hip. Three other Marines nearby were also injured, one critically. They were medivacked to the 1st Medical Battalion in Da Nang. Ball required resuscitation upon arrival followed by emergency surgery. He never regained consciousness and subsequently developed bilateral (double) pneumonia. Despite massive antibiotics and assisted respiration, Ball’s condition failed to improve, and he expired at 9:25 PM on September 16, 1970.
Ball, 28, was on his third tour of Vietnam. He had been extensively trained in handling booby traps, and his unit reportedly received weekly lectures on booby trap precautions including the Viet Cong practice of removing the delay device from grenades. It was noted in the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines Command Chronology for September 1970 that the failure of Ball to follow practices emphasized in training at the cost of his life would be reiterated in future instruction.

On this Veterans Day, I'm so sad to report that we lost my amazing dad @eddies.almanac one week ago, November 3rd, 2023 to pancreatic cancer. I can barely type this without bursting into tears, this time of year has been hard for me my entire adult life but this is the ultimate gut punch. He was a Veteran, retired LAPD, Indiana Jones Enthusiast, Saints Fanatic, Model-T Expert, Avocado Extraordinaire, Nickname Aficionado, Grill Master, Pirate. Certified Baby and Puppy Whisperer, He could fix literally anything, Knew all the words to every song by the Doors, Can quote episodes of California Gold, Loved red meat and red potato salad. Dad, you were so stubborn, funny, smart, handsome, kind, giving, strong, talented, selfless and wise. But your best quality is how much you cared about, sacrifice for, and loved your family and your country. Thank you for making @ragtymestation a mom, for giving me great siblings and a great work ethic. Thanks for teaching me how to throw a football and change a tire. Thanks for giving me the nickname "Lumpy", the shoulders of a line backer, and the hands of a power forward. Thanks for teaching me to stick to what I believe in and to never let other people's opinions sway my own. You're like, a really great father. I love you, Ed Largey, time to "break on through to the other side".
Sidebar: I am very grateful and thankful for my family, friends, all of my clients, and colleagues who helped me get him into the right doctors and take the time off to spend his last days with him.

Glen Walter Haws, BHS 1953
Glen Walter Haws, BHS 1953
Sept. 24, 1935 — Feb. 4, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father, Glen Walter Haws, who passed away on Feb. 4, 2026, at the age of 90.
Glen was born on Sept. 24, 1935, in Burbank, California, at the home of his grandparents, to parents Glen and Maxine (Odermatt) Haws. A lifelong resident of Burbank, he took great pride in the city that shaped him. One of his favorite childhood stories was serving as paperboy to heavyweight boxing champion Jeff Jeffries — a story he never tired of telling.
He attended Burbank High School, where he met the love of his life, Beverly (Danell) Haws. After graduating in 1953, Glen enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Following boot camp at Camp Pendleton, he returned home to elope with his 17-year-old sweetheart before being deployed to Japan and Korea. In 1956, they welcomed their first son, John, while living in a trailer at Camp Pendleton.
After his honorable discharge from the Marines in 1956, Glen worked as an apprentice machinist at Mitchell Cameras in Glendale before achieving what he considered his true calling. On Sept. 1, 1957, he was hired as a firefighter for the city of Burbank — becoming a proud second-generation Burbank firefighter, following in the footsteps of his father, who joined the department in 1943.
In those early years, when firefighter pay was modest, Glen worked multiple jobs to provide for his growing family. He drove his Model A Ford pickup to local dairies, loaded it with manure, and sold it door-to-door, spreading it on lawns throughout the neighborhood. He also worked as a plasterer and painter — doing whatever it took to build a stable life for his family.
In 1959, their second son, James, was born. The following year, Glen purchased a home on Kenneth Road in Burbank, where he would live for the rest of his life. Robert was born in 1962, and their daughter Linda (Wright) in 1968, completing their family of four children.
Over his 40-year career with the Burbank Fire Department, Glen rose through the ranks, promoting to engineer and later to captain in 1973. Being a firefighter was not just his profession — it was his dream. He loved the camaraderie, the service, and the stories that came with the job. Though he retired in 1998 due to a medical condition, it was a career he never truly wanted to leave.
Glen was a storyteller at heart. He cherished sharing memories of growing up in Burbank and recounting his years on the fire department. His life was rooted in family, hard work, and dedication to his community.
He is survived by his children: John and daughter-in-law Kathy; Robert and daughter-in-law Terrie; and Linda and son-in-law Mark Wright; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and his sister, Donna Edwards. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Beverly, in 2009, and his son James in 2025. Glen’s legacy lives on in the family he built, the city he loved, and the department he proudly served.

George Thomas Van Hoye, 69, of Medford, Oregon, passed away May 24, 2015 at Providence Medford Medical Center. He was born in Alderson, West Virginia to Charles and Azelda (Burns) Van Hoye.
Dad served in the U.S Marine Corp and fought in Vietnam. After the service he began his love for riding motorcycles and loved the ape hanger Harley Davidson. He loved riding and spending time outside while camping, fishing or going on walks, especially in the desert. He collected coins and enjoyed working out, but the thing that really meant a lot to him was rebuilding his 51’ Chevy pick up truck.
He fell in love with Kimberly Grinstead and became a father of two. He was a proud dad that always showed his kids the correct way of doing things and taught them manners and to treat people with respect. He worked hard in life to support his family no matter what he had to do. Family meant the world to him, he taught us, that without family you have nobody. Dad also loved animals, at times it seemed as if he could talk to them. He had a good heart and would do anything for anyone who needed him.

Michael Dennis Kubelka was a 1967 graduate of Burbank High School in Burbank, California. The Valley Funeral Home in Burbank was in charge of the Arrangements. Next to his senior picture is says the following: Coll. Prep, Will be at Valley J.C.
From Mike's son Derek:
Michael Kubelka is my father. He passed away from throat and lung cancer on 02/21/2006 at his childhood home in Burbank. My father was very proud of his military service during the Vietnam war. He served in the 101st Airborne Division as a medic. After his service, he returned home to Burbank and worked as a finishing carpenter. He married my mother, Jackie, and had one child (me - Michael Derek Kubelka) in 1976. My mother and father were only married for a few years, but remained close friends until his death. My father never remarried. When my father was diagnosed with cancer in December 2005 my mother insisted that she take care of him, which she did, until he passed away on February 21, 2006.
My father has two grandchildren, ages 3 and 1. Unfortunately, he never had a chance to meet the youngest. He was only around for the first 4 months of the oldest life. Nevertheless, he was extremely proud to be a Grandpa! My father was a good and honest man. He had his fair share of flaws, but he always put friends and family first. He was known as "everyone's dad" because he always seemed to be giving fatherly advise to all of my friends when I was growing up. He is missed a great deal by all of those that knew him.

Ardona Keith Van Winkle Jr., BHS 1972
Ardona Keith Van Winkle Jr., BHS 1972
In memory of Ardona "RD" Keith Van Winkle, San Diego, CA
May 14, 1954 - March 6, 2026
Ardona Keith Van Winkle Jr. was an amazing father, a devoted Papa, and a man whose life was defined by love, loyalty, and family.
Born on May 14, 1954, in Corona, California, he was the second-born of six children and the oldest son of Ardona and Beatrice Van Winkle (née Binkerd). He was raised with strong family values that he carried throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his baby sister Debbie, who passed as an infant; his older sister Diane McCall; his younger brother Randy Van Winkle; and his beloved parents.
He is survived by his younger sisters, Robyn and Lorrie; his children, Patsy, Sommer, Cathy, Michael, and Skylar; his cherished grandchildren, JuliAnna, Thomas, Dalilah, Levi, Aubree, and Milo; his sons-in-law, Jesse Jackson and Michael Bendos; and his daughter-in-law, Tulie Barlow.
He grew up in Burbank, California, where he attended school and graduated from Burbank High School. In 1974, he became a father with the birth of his daughter Patricia Van Winkle, born to his first wife, Diane. Becoming a dad was a defining moment in his life—one that shaped everything that followed.
In his younger years, he was a proud member of the Chosen Few Motorcycle Club and spent many years riding throughout the western United States, from Kern County to Colorado, where he lived for a short time. His love for motorcycles ran deep; he built his Harley-Davidson himself, modifying and refining it over many years. Eventually, he chose to step away from that chapter of his life so he could focus fully on what mattered most to him—his children.
A hard worker through and through, he held many jobs over the years. He worked for the City of Burbank alongside his father, spent time in bike shops and auto repair, worked in construction, drove a tow truck, hauled freight as a cross-country semi-truck driver, and later became a bottom dump driver for Hanson Aggregates. He remained there until a work-related injury in 2009.
In 1988, he married Erica Anderson, lovingly welcoming his second daughter, Sommer Jackson (Anderson). Later that same year, he welcomed his third daughter, Cathy Bendos (Van Winkle). He went on to become the proud father of his only son, Michael Van Winkle, in 1993, and his youngest child, Skylar Anderson, in 1996.
He was many things in his lifetime, and he was proud of much—but nothing ever compared to his pride in being a dad and a Papa. For the last 30+ years, his children and grandchildren were his world. He was known as everyone’s dad, uncle, and Papa—the steady presence who showed up, listened, helped, and loved without condition.
He taught his children that family is everything—and that family isn’t only blood. He lived that belief every day, welcoming others into his heart and home. He shared an unbreakable bond with his kids and was deeply loved by many because of how fiercely and genuinely he loved others.
His legacy lives on through the lives he shaped, the values he passed down, and the deep love he gave so freely. He will be missed beyond words and remembered always.
