Ernest Gilmore Cromar Jr., BHS 1950
Ernest Gilmore Cromar Jr., BHS 1950
Ernest Gilmore Cromar was born in Burbank, California to Ernest Royal and Ruth Cromar on July 11, 1932. Ernie grew up in Burbank. He attended Burbank High school, where he excelled in track and basketball. After graduating from Burbank High in 1950, he continued his education at the University of Southern California.
Ernie left USC to serve in the United States Air Force in 1952. He was stationed in Turkey for most of his time in the Air Force. After Ernie returned home upon his honorable discharge from the Air Force in 1954, he began his 40+ year career at Universal Studios.
It was at Universal Studios that he met his future wife, Jean Louise Dow, who he married on November 3, 1956. Ernie and Jean lived in North Hollywood after they married. In 1961, Ernie and Jean moved to Canoga Park (now West Hills), where they raised their three children. Ernie liked nothing more than being at home. From the start, he worked hard as he made his home and raised his family. He delighted in summer afternoons in his back yard watching the kids grow up.
In his later years after the kids left home, he still enjoyed many quiet hours in the comfort of his home. Ernie loved sports. A standout high school athlete, his passion for sports carried through his entire life. And the main focus of his passion was USC football. He steadfastly supported the USC Trojan football teams through all their successes and failures over the years.
While USC was first in his heart, the other Los Angeles teams were there, too -- Ernie followed the Dodgers and Lakers from the time the teams arrived in Los Angeles. He enjoyed surf and deep-sea fishing. Ernie loved the beach -- when the kids were small, Ernie took the family to Faria County Park in Ventura every year to where he spent long summer days in the tide pools or on the beach fishing.
Ernie was surrounded by his family when he passed away on the afternoon of January 3, 2011 in West Hills, California. Ernie is survived by his wife, Jean, his sons Robert Ernest (Kathleen) and Ronald Ernest (Jodi); his daughter Kimberly Joan (Olivia "Libby") and grandchildren Daniel Robert, Rebecca Louise, James Patrick, Gregory Joseph, Lauren Louise, Lindsey Rose and Emily Joan.Ernie, husband, father and grandfather will live in our hearts forever. Alfred Steven DiSarro, Jr., BHS 1970
Al DiSarro passed away very suddenly and unexpectedly on Thursday morning, January 13, 2011. One day earlier, on Wednesday, January 12, he underwent planned surgery on his elbow as an out-patient. It isn't known yet if that surgery had any impact on his passing.
On Thursday morning he had been up earlier, then returned to bed. Sometime later Janet, his wife, became aware that his breathing was not normal. She tried to wake him without success, and began CPR then. When the paramedics arrived Al was already gone.
Some of you who use FaceBook saw this news about Al beginning Thursday afternoon, and some of you have posted comments about his passing. We waited until now to send out this notice until we could confirm more details about Al's passing.
Alfred Steven DiSarro, Jr. was born December 14, 1951. He grew up in Burbank in the 800 block of Santa Anita Ave. He attended Miller Elementary, Muir Jr. High, and then BHS graduating with us in 1970. He and his high school sweetheart, Janet Henderson DiSarro, were married in October 1970, and this past October celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. Janet also grew up in Burbank and attended Jefferson Elementary, John Muir, and graduated with Al from BHS in 1970. For a number of years they have lived in Agua Dulce, California.
Al and Janet attended the Class of '70 40th Reunion this past June at the Castaway in Burbank. That was the first of the '70 Class reunions that they had been to in either twenty or thirty years. They were recognized that night as the classmates who had been married the longest. Please open the attachment to this message to see a wonderful photo of Al and Janet that Tim Tolnay took that night at the Castaway. Our reunions are becoming more special, more precious, by the month, it seems!
Al DiSarro has been a widely known and very well respected Special Effects Coordinator for the studios and movie industry for almost all of his adult life. He owned his own business in that field, and was employed by many different studios. He received an Academy Awards nomination for his Special Effects on the movie "Die Hard". A few of his other well known movies are "Transformers", "Predator", and the other "Die Hard" movies. One of his last movies is "The Last 3 Minutes" from 2010.
Al leaves behind his wife Janet Henderson DiSarro, daughter Amy, son Matt, daughter-in-law Jennifer, granddaughter Madison, and younger brother Mark DiSarro and his family. Arrangements have not been completed yet in the planning of a Memorial Service for Al. We will send another message with those details when they are confirmed.

In 1957, Jim accepted the head football coaching job at Ventura College. He coached the Pirates from 1957 to 1966. In 1965, Jim and his staff led the Pirates to their first league championship in several decades. Jim also taught physical education and health and assisted other athletic programs at the college. Jim often served as a guest speaker at local high school sports banquets, community service clubs, and youth groups at the church, always promoting strong personal values, academics and physical fitness.
In 1967, Jim accepted the position as the first athletic director at newly opened Moorpark College. Large and in charge, he quickly became well-known as "Big Daddy." While there, he also accepted a position as a board member of the Western States Athletic Conference. Jim was particularly pleased when Moorpark College's athletic teams won the coveted Western State Conference Athletic Supremacy Award.
In the 1970s, Jim left athletics to become the dean of registration at Moorpark College. He then returned to Ventura as assistant superintendent of the Ventura County Community College District and finally district superintendent. Jim retired in 1982 but remained active in the community.
He was a member and past president of the Moorpark Rotary Club and was active for many years in the American Heart Association. Jim was a longtime member of Community Presbyterian Church in Ventura and Trinity Presbyterian Church in Camarillo.
An avid golfer, Jim was an active member and served on the board of directors at Las Posas Country Club. Jim was also very honored to have been uniquely selected to both the Moorpark College Athletic Hall of Fame (2000) and the Ventura College Athletic Hall of Fame (2007).
Jim and Jean enjoyed many wonderful sightseeing and golfing vacations together, including favorite trips to Alaska, Russia, Scotland, Ireland and Hawaii. Jim also loved to fish in the High Sierras, taking the family vacationing there many consecutive years. He particularly enjoyed several horse pack trips into the wilderness. Jim fully embraced life and was never afraid to try something new, which included a helicopter ride to an Alaskan glacier and drift boat steelhead fishing and whitewater rafting in several Northern California rivers.
Jim was tough on the outside but soft on the inside with an engaging personality. He was not afraid to speak his mind and was known as a great motivator. He was fair, positive, quick with a smile and had a great sense of humor, always ready to share a joke. Jim instilled in his family honesty, dedication, fairness, hard work and a sense of community.
In 2003, Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Jean, who was the loved of his life for 63 years. He was also preceded in death by his father, James Moore Sr.; mother Georgia Moore; and brother David.
Jim resided in Camarillo for the past 41 years, and his family and friends will deeply miss him. Special thanks go to the many wonderful longtime friends and healthcare professionals who assisted Jim the last five years since Jean's passing and most recently the wonderful staff at Alma Via of Camarillo.

Richard "Dick" Lyle Morris, BHS 1944
Sun Post News: Orange County Register weekly (San Clemente, CA) - Thursday, December 4, 2008
Richard "Dick" Lyle Morris, born Sept. 30, 1926, in Sioux City, Iowa, entered into eternal life Nov. 30, 2008. The cause of death was congestive heart failure. He was in the comfort of his home, surrounded by loving family. He lived life to the fullest.
Richard loved people and could make anyone feel at ease. He always had a story to share. He loved to be active, whether working in his yard, going on long walks, riding his bike, square dancing, etc. He was always planning the next project. He truly enjoyed a good meal, driving his convertible, and the company of women.
Richard's father died when Richard was 3. He was raised in Sioux City and Haywarden, Iowa, by his widowed mother and two elder sisters. He also spent time with his uncles on the farm. Later his family moved to Glendale. He graduated from Burbank High School , then joined the Navy after working at Lockheed. After Word War II, he attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and graduated with a degree in pharmacy. In college he met and married Marjory Voltmer. They settled in Glendale.
Richard began his career as a sales representative for Park-Davis. After the birth of their first child, Patty, they moved to Canoga Park, where Richard and a partner opened a pharmacy. Over the next several years, Richard owned and operated pharmacies in the San Fernando Valley and Glendale.
His family grew to include Betsy, Jennifer and Tom. After a move to Northridge, his last child, Fred, was born (delivered at home by Richard). After renting a house in the summer of 1973 in San Clemente, the family decided to relocate to San Clemente. Richard opened his last store – Sea View Pharmacy. Several years later, Richard and Marjory divorced yet continued to run the pharmacy and share family gatherings.
Richard tried to retire, but missed working. He didn't miss the headaches of owning a business, so he went to work for Sav-On. He relocated to Palm Desert and briefly remarried. He shared the last few years of his life with Jeri Sommers.
Richard is survived by his ex-wife Marjory; children and grandchildren Patty and Chris Thompson (Scott/Christy), Betsy Milner (Garrett/Kyle), Jennifer and Bob DeJong (Braden), Tom and Jackie Morris (Jenna, Matt, Eric), Fred and Jennifer Morris (Bill/Molly); partner Jeri Sommers; sister Ruth Doelz; niece MaryLynn Webster and great-nieces Julianne and Jacqueline Doelz.
