Arlayne Mellon Brotherton of Simi Valley passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, Oct. 28 2009 following a courageous battle with cancer.
Strengthened by the love and support of her family, she battled the cancer with dignity and grace. Arlayne was born Oct. 6, 1931, in Waterbury, Conn. She moved to California in 1948 and attended Burbank High School , where she met the love of her life, Boyd. Arlayne and Boyd were married on Sept. 30, 1950, and they settled in Arleta, where they raised their 2 daughters and son.
Arlayne worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District for 20 years as a secretary. She was also a devoted housewife. Upon retirement, Boyd and Arlayne moved to Simi Valley to be closer to their family. Boyd and Arlayne became very involved at St. Rose of Lima Church, especially with the Knights of Columbus. She spent countless hours volunteering her time at the Knights' activities.
Arlayne's true passion was her family. She took great joy in her immediate and extended family. Her happiest times were with her family on camping trips, birthday parties and holidays.
Arlayne was preceded in death by her parents, William and Sara Mellon, her sister, Agnes, and her brothers, Hugh, William, Edward, Robert, and Francis.
She is survived by her loving husband, Boyd; her children: Judi Kent (Joe) of Newbury Park, Rick Brotherton (Teri) of Simi Valley and Jill Quercio (Steve) of Victorville; her nine grandchildren: Jackie, Steven, Tina, Nathan, Tracy, Tony, Trisha, Sara and Lindsey, as well as her 25 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, George Mellon, as well as numerous friends she held dear to her heart.
Arlayne's family would like to offer a special thank you to Buena Vista hospice for their gentle and compassionate care, especially nurse Claire. Vigil will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Reardon Mortuary, 2636 Sycamore Drive, Simi Valley, with the Rosary recited at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at St. Rose of Lima Church, 1305 Royal Avenue, Simi Valley. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery.
Celebration of Life will be held following at the home of Rick and Teri. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Arlayne's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
