Violet Mathews, age 93, of Mankato, died Thursday, December 22, 2011 at the Sterling House in Mankato. Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, December 29, 2011 at the Church of the Nativity in Cleveland, with Fr. Dennis Backer officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at the St. Peter Funeral Home/Klein Chapel, and will continue one hour prior to the service Thursday. Burial will be in Savidge Lake Cemetery in Cleveland.
Violet Marie Mathews was born to Arthur and Emily (Stepanek) Sellers in Berwyn, Illinois. She was baptized at St. Mary of Celle Catholic Church in Berwyn. She graduated from Burbank High School in Burbank, California. Violet was united in marriage to Theodore Mathews in 1938 in California. She was a homemaker for most of her life.
Violet loved playing tennis, longbow archery, jazz music, cooking, tending to her flower gardens, and cats. She also was an accomplished pianist and was an ancestor of the classical composer, Antonin Dvorak. Most of all, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Violet is survived by three sons, Ted “Ken” (Karen) Mathews of Madison Lake, Richard (Sandra) Mathews of California, Donald (Susie) Mathews of California; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one future great-grandchild; many nieces and nephews; and special cat “Bunny”.She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted in 1991; daughter, Janet in 1980; two sisters, Dorothy and Merle.
