Marten Garibkhanyan , BHS 2009

On October 14, 2016, Marten and his best friend and fellow BHS 2009 grad Araik Yegiazaryan were taking a ride share to a Koreatown BBQ restaurant to celebrate Yegiazaryan's 25th birthday. But in the early morning hours on October 15, 2016 they were both killed in a tragic accident.

High School Friend Of Two Men Killed In Fiery Koreatown Crash Testifies

POSTED BY CONTRIBUTING EDITOR ON JANUARY 25, 2021, MyNewsLA.com

A high school friend of two men who died in a fiery traffic collision in Koreatown in 2016 testified Monday that the driver who allegedly caused the accident fled and said he was driving on a suspended license.

David Malakian, 29, of Valley Village, was the first witness in a non-jury trial of a Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit stemming from the deaths of Araik Yegiazaryan and Marten Garibkhanyan, who were both 25 when they burned to death in the back seat of a car allegedly driven by Arsen Akopyan, now 38, who later fled to Armenia after being charged with murder, vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run driving, according to attorneys for the plaintiffs.

The lawsuit also alleges Akopyan was intoxicated at the time and had a prior history of drinking while driving. The plaintiffs are Garibkhangyan’s parents, Edvard Garibkhangyan and Hasmik Harutunyan, and Yegiazaryan’s mother, Olga Yegiazaryan.

The lawsuit was filed in July 2017 and is being tried without a jury before Judge Stephanie Bowick. Akopyan is not present and has not hired an attorney or summoned any witnesses on his behalf. The judge said she is satisfied he was given sufficient notice of the trial.

According to Malakian, he, Yegiazaryan and Garibkhanyan used a ride-hailing service to go to a Koreatown barbeque restaurant the night of Oct. 14, 2016, to celebrate Yegiazaryan’s 25th birthday. They later were put in touch with Akopyan, who was at a nearby karaoke bar, and he invited them to join him, Malakian said.

Malakian said he and the others again took a ride-hailing service to get to the karaoke bar and met Akopyan and his friend. “They were drunk,” Malakian said.

When the bar closed, Akopyan insisted Malakian and his companions join him at his nearby residence for a night cap, Malakian said, Malakian testified that he and his friends once again planned to use a ride-hailing service, but that Akopyan insisted on driving.

Malakian said he, Yegiazaryan, Garibkhanyan and a fourth man got into the back seat of a silver Audi and that Akopyan and a sixth man sat in the right front passenger seat. He said Akopyan initially proceeded cautiously, but that things changed when he reached Third Street and began driving west.

“He got reckless,” Malakian said. “He started speeding and running red lights.”

Akopyan drove close to 100 mph and avoided collisions during the first and second signals, but not when he reached the third, Malakian said. A car traveling north on Wilton Place collided with Akopyan’s car, which spun and crashed into a wall before bursting into flames, he said.

Malakian said he was able to get out of the car and helped remove two other passengers, but that he could not assist Yegiazaryan and Garibkhanyan, saying of the latter, “I kind of realized he was no longer with us.” Bystanders warned Malakian to step away from the car before it blew up, he said. Akopyan did nothing to help, telling Malakian, “I need to go, I have a suspended license,” the witness said.

Marten & Araik
Malakian said his injuries included a separated right shoulder and third degree burns to his left shoulder and the back of his neck. Malakian described Garibkhanyan as an “awesome person” and Yegiazaryan as someone with a bright future in web development.

The second trial witness was Olga Yegiazaryan, a 61-year-old Russian emigre and the mother of Yegiazaryan. She struggled to maintain her composure as she recalled her son who was always smiling and had plans to marry his girlfriend. She said that although she never liked tattoos, she now wears one in his honor on her left wrist.

NOTE: The Grand Jury ordered Fugitive Driver in Crash That Killed 2 Ordered to Pay $30 Million. $10 million each to Marten Garibkhanyan father and mother, and $10 million to Yegiazaryan's mother. The driver Arsen Akopyan still is in Armenia living with his mother.

Duane Leslie Thaxton, BHS 1967

JANUARY 26, 1949 – FEBRUARY 26, 2021

Duane Leslie Thaxton was born on January 26, 1949 and passed away on February 26, 2021 and is under the care of Eternal Valley Memorial Park Mortuary. NO PUBLIC SERVICES ARE SCHEDULED AT THIS TIME.

Duane was my classmate having graduated from Burbank High with the class of 1967. I would see Duane around the school campus, but did not really know him. He was a guy with good looks and a great smile. Duane was one of our class Zooming buddies that our class does every Friday during Covid 19. Duane was last on Zoom with us end of last year.

Duane's wife Carolyn informed our class with the following message: I have sad news.

Duane passed away in his sleep yesterday. He was fighting lymphoma but we didn't beat it this time. He always enjoyed talking about all of you and I always wondered why he stayed so close to friends from long ago. Then.....I met all of you and now I know.

Due to Covid I'm not quite sure what I will do for a service but I wanted you to know about his passing.

NOTE: There is a Find A Grave memorial for him at Eternal Valley Memorial Park, Newhall, California, but I have not confirmed that he is actually buried there due to the fact his brief obit says funeral services were there, but did not say interment following.

Dina Arias Ortiz, BHS 1964

Dina Arias Ortiz, BHS 1964

After graduating from Burbank High school in 1964, Dina went on to Glendale Community College and became a dental assistant. She worked for Dr. Camphouse in Glendale until he retired an then for another dentist (or 2) .

She married and had 2 daughters, Vanessa Demaret and Veronica Ortiz and lived in the San Fernando Valley all her life. One of the girls was diagnosed with MS in her early 20's and for nearly 2 decades our sister took care of her at home until we lost her on April 15th of 2019.

Dina was selfless as she was beautiful. She dedicated her life to her family and to Christ. As she was leaving this earth, she made it clear to us exactly where she was going and she was fearless. This was her parting gift to us - letting us know that she was going to a better place. Those of us left behind, can only hope we are worthy of the same place and will one day see her again.

Roger Alan Black, BHS 1971

Roger Alan Black, BHS 1971

Received an email this morning from Roger's brother as follows:

I  wanted to make an addition to the 1971 BHS in Memoriam blog for my late brother, Roger Alan Black who passed away on December 18, 2018 in Los Angeles, CA.

Following his graduation from BHS, Roger pursued his passion with photography by moving to Hawaii and starting a Luau photography business. After a few years of that he moved to Phuket, Thailand to pursue additional photography business for the tourist trade there. To supplement his income, Roger became an English teacher for Thai children. He enjoyed this work and did it for almost 25 years. Roger’s career was interrupted by a severe case of gout and he could no longer stand for hours as required by the Thai schools. He returned to Los Angeles where he was treated and lived in a small apartment in South Central LA.

Roger passed away on December 18, 2018 from lung cancer.

Thanks for making this addition to the blog, and thank you for maintaining the blog.

Annette Sylvia Stone Hughes, BHS 1938

Annette Sylvia Stone Hughes, BHS 1938

What a wonderful life!

Annette S. Hughes was born on Dec. 16, 1920. Sadly the family waved goodbye on Jan. 26, 2012.

Born in Burbank, CA to Nellie L. Phillips Stone and George N. Stone. She married her Burbank High School sweet heart, Harold R. Hughes on January 11, 1939. They had two sons, Gary J. Hughes and Robert L. Hughes (Bob). The family enjoyed camping and fishing. In 1953 the family moved to Santa Barbara to begin the family business with Harold's brother Leland and wife Doris Hughes. Together they started Hughes Bros. Pontiac on Chapala St.

Annette & Harold became involved in the Santa Barbara Yacht Club with their sons and began boating and water skiing. Sadly, and very suddenly, the love of her life passed away in Oct. 1964. Annette began her new life. She attended SB City College and had a short career as a secretary for Valley View Realty. Annette also kept up with her membership in P.E.O. Chapter AC. She had been a member since March 11, 1940. Soon, work began to interfere with her social life as she found new passions for tennis, golf, bridge, Ping-Pong, and dancing. She enjoyed water skiing into her 70's.

A dear friend of the family and intrepid yachtsman in his own right, Clark Smith (d. 2011), in time became her long-term companion for 28 years. Together they enjoyed several cruises and travels. Meanwhile enjoying a long running game of dominoes. Annette also discovered the joys of becoming a grandmother, especially enjoying family gatherings with Barbecued Ribs.

The first 86 years of her life were very healthy. The last five were difficult ones with declining health. She had lived at Vista Del Monte for 6 years. In Sept. of 2011, the family moved her to a new home, Abundant Care, Santa Barbara, CA. The family wishes to thank Timothy Pryko and his family along with his loving staff members Lidia, Alex & Lana for the loving care they provided for Annette to the very end. There could not have been a better place for her to live and pass. Just hours before her passing, Fredrik Rosvall, her favorite piano player played at Annette's bedside her favorite song "Blowing in the Wind."

Her smile and generosity will be remembered and missed.

Annette is survived by her sister Jo Forth of Los Osos, CA her son Gary J. Hughes & wife Tammy Hughes along with their 3 sons, Shawn, Kevin and Randy Hughes of Goleta, CA & son Robert L. (Bob) Hughes and wife Karin, & his son Bret Hughes, of Santa Barbara. She was predeceased by her grandson, Bob's son, Jon R. Hughes.

Private family services will be held with interment next to her husband and grandson at Santa Barbara Cemetery.

Donations may be sent to P.E.O. 3700 Grand Ave, Des Moines, IA 50312 OR the Alzheimer's Association.
