Ernest Henry von Seggern, BHS 1963

1945-2022

Published in The Cronicle, Centralia, WA, Thursday, March 10, 2022

Ernest Henry von Seggern was born in Los Angeles, California, on July 23, 1945, to Ernest A. and Helen von Seggern. With his wife at his side, he passed from this life into the loving arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ, on Feb. 20, 2022.

Ernie was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Frances Bach.  He leaves behind his wife Karen, seven children, 10 grandchildren and his brother Albert.

Ernie graduated from Burbank High School in 1963 and began college at what is now UC Northridge. In 1967, he joined the military as a member of the band at March Air Force Base. Ernie applied to an educational program and was soon sent to the University of Washington where he completed a bachelor's degree in physics in 1969. He also completed a bachelor’s degree in math and later a master’s degree in systems management from USC. Ernie retired from the Air Force as a captain in 1987. He went on to work for Wang Laboratories and then William Carey Publishing. Ernie relocated his family from California to Washington where he later became a member of Winlock Post 101 of the American Legion.

He joined the Home Depot when it opened in Chehalis. His favorite part of working in the hardware department was helping customers and volunteering the first Saturday of the month to teach woodworking at the kid’s clinic. He was forced to retire in March of 2021 due to advanced prostate cancer.

Ernie would tell you that the most important day in his life was Mother’s Day of 1985 when he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and became a changed man and a child of God.

Carleton Barker Shay, BHS 1942

Carleton B. Shay, BHS 1942

January 26, 1924 - February 27, 2022 Carleton Barker Shay died at home peacefully at the tender age of 98 years and in the company of his children. Born in Berkeley, he was raised in Burbank by his mother and grandparents. He graduated from Burbank High School shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and after a single semester at UCLA, enlisted in the US Army. He served in the 10th Mountain Division ("Ski Troops") in northern Italy, where he received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. After discharge he completed his BS at UCLA and there met his future wife and closest companion for the next 53 years, Hanna. They married in 1950 and had two children, Catherine Louise (in 1951) and Kenneth John (in 1953). He taught math and served as a guidance counselor at Santa Monica High School until he completed his Education doctorate at UCLA in 1961. He joined the Education faculty at California State College at Los Angeles (later CSULA) and remained at Cal State until his retirement as a Professor of Education in 1989, serving as Associate Dean of the School of Education and Chair of the Academic Senate.

Carleton had a lifelong love of hiking and camping in the San Gabriel, San Bernardino, and Sierra Nevada mountains. He joined the Sierra Club and became adept at hiking and technical rock-climbing while still a teenager. By the 1990s he had set a record in the club's Hundred Peaks section, having reached the summit of every one of the 277 peaks over 5000' in that group's register-and doing so no fewer than ten times each. He passed along this passion to many in his children's generation by serving as the Scoutmaster of Troop 121 from 1964-1968. He continued skiing and hiking well into his 80's. He was an avid photographer and traveler, visiting all the western National Parks with the full family; exploring parts of Europe, Central and South America, and the Far East with Hanna; and continuing and expanding his international experiences with Cathy following Hanna's death in 2003. Carleton also loved and participated in classical and folk music. He adored vanilla ice cream and hated parsnips.

He is survived and will be greatly missed by his children Cathy Shay Miller (Alex) of Orange and Ken Shay (Bonnie) of Ann Arbor, Michigan; grandchildren Lisa Morgan

(Seth) of Orange, Michael Miller of LA, and Rebecca Shay Rodriguez (Matthew) of Denver, Colorado; and great-grandchildren Shaylyn, Hanna, and Grant Morgan, all of Orange.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations on his behalf to the Sierra Club (ActSierraClub.org) or to Troop 121 (checks made out to "Scout Troop 121" sent to 323 Welcome Street, LA, CA 90026).

The world lost a pre-eminent scholar and gifted musician when Karen Lynn Davidson departed this life on October 14, 2019, at her home in Salt Lake City. She was born in Glendale, California, to Gerald Orvel and Mary Callan Lynn on July 11, 1943, and grew up in a loving home in nearby Burbank.

Karen received B.A. and M.A. degrees in English literature from Brigham Young University. Her Ph.D., with an emphasis in medieval English literature, is from the University of Southern California. Karen also held two major postdoctoral fellowships - at Cambridge University in England and at the University of Chicago. At BYU, she was a member of the English faculty (nine years) and Honors Program Director. Karen also taught at USC, Long Beach City College, Pasadena City College, and the Mayfield Academy.

As an accomplished violinist and violist, she was concertmaster of the BYU Philharmonic Orchestra (five years), Pasadena Community Orchestra, and Rio Hondo Symphony in California. She also played with the Orchestra at Temple Square.

Two hymns with texts by Karen are in the hymnbook of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: "Each Life That Touches Ours for Good" and "O, Savior Thou Who Wearest a Crown." Karen served on the General Music Committee and is the author of the popular Our Latter-day Hymns: The Stories and the Messages.

Beyond her musical contributions, Karen authored articles and books, including Thriving on Our Differences. She was co-editor of the Histories Volumes 1 and 2 of The Joseph Smith Papers series, co-authored Eliza: The Life and Faith of Eliza R. Snow, and was co-editor of Eliza R. Snow: The Complete Poetry. Karen served for decades in various Stake and Ward Relief Society callings and recently on the Board of the Mormon Scholars Foundation.

Karen and her late and beloved husband, David A. Davidson, lived a very full life. Residences over the years included Irving, TX; Princeton, NJ; Manhattan, NY; Pasadena, CA; Hilliard, WY; & Salt Lake City, UT.

She is survived by two sisters, Barbara Rencher (Roy) of Farmington, UT, and Diana Roskuski (Ron) of Mesa, AZ; five stepsons, Joseph Davidson (Laura), John Finch (Dierdre), Robert Finch (Lezli), Wesley Davidson, and Eliott Davidson, along with 308 (yes, 308!) dearly loved nieces and nephews (including greats and great-greats), and a host of wonderful friends collected throughout her remarkable life. She had an avid passion for chocolate, Diet Coke, BYU Cougars, PBS, KBYU-FM classical radio, opera, New York Times Friday crossword puzzles, and The New Yorker magazine.

A family burial took place in Dayton, Idaho on Friday, October 18, 2019, according to Karen's wishes. If you wish to honor Karen, donations may be made to the Church Humanitarian Aid fund or to a charity of your choice.

The family expresses appreciation for the staff of LDS and Western Peaks Hospitals and South Davis Specialty Care, along with Doctors Lisa Kuwahara, Nathan Richards, and Mark Lewis for their kind and compassionate care.
