Born on a farm in Filley, Nebr. on Oct. 26, 1927, she was the sixth of seven children born to Harry and Regina Hutchison.
From the age of 13 she attended Burbank schools and graduated from Burbank High School. She was introduced by her best friend Ardyne Blackstone to the love of her life, Oscar Eilers Hovland (predeceased), her husband of 60 years.
Their meeting was love at first sight. While Oscar worked at Lockheed, she was a traditional wife and mom raising three sons. For a time she worked at Lockheed, then enjoyed a long career with the U.S. Postal Service, retiring after 21 years.
Joyce is remembered by her many friends and family as loving, beautiful, spiritual, serious and reflective, radiating a goodness she shared with all. Her many pleasures in life were family gatherings, homemaking, gardening, church attendance, square dancing, camping and travel throughout the USA and Europe.
Joyce is survived by sons Larry (Bernadette) of Glendale, Loren (Lory) of Santa Rosa and Gregory (Jamie) of Lancaster; granddaughters Wendy (Roger) and Stacie; grandsons Erik (Joanna), Brian, Matthew, Jens and Jeremy; great-grandchildren Sean, Andy, Tyler and Annika and her sister Patricia Gassett and sister-in-law Judy Hovland.
A memorial service is planned for Friday, Feb. 11 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, 3561 Foothill Blvd., La Crescenta. Interment at Forest Lawn, Glendale.
Arrangements are being handled by Crippen Mortuary, La Crescenta.
