Carol M. Bull Laitinen, BHS 1950

Carol M. Bull Laitinen, BHS 1950

Carol M. Laitinen, 77, of La Crosse passed away Saturday, June 12, 2010, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center. Carol was born March 17, 1933, in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada to Clair and Grace Bull, American and Canadian citizens, respectively.

Carol’s father served as a Canadian Air Force officer in WWII. During Carol’s first 13 years, the family moved frequently, from Thunder Bay to Montreal to Winnipeg and then to Vancouver, when the war ended. Carol’s family then moved to Los Angeles, Calif., in 1946. Carol graduated from Burbank High School in 1950, and she ultimately joined Atomics International in 1960, the same day as her future husband, Mal Laitinen. While waiting for six months to obtain security clearance from the Atomic Energy Commission, Mal and Carol started dating, and in 1962, they married.

Through Carol’s loving guidance and unselfish desire to have her husband fulfill a lifelong passion, the couple moved to Houghton, Michigan in 1963, where Mal became a teacher at Michigan Technological University. Carol and Mal lived in Houghton for seven years by Lake Superior, the Great Lake which reminded Carol of her childhood days in Thunder Bay. In 1970, they moved to La Crosse, Wis., where Mal was hired and continues to serve as a teacher at the Trane Company.

Carol always loved animals, and she passed that love on to her sons, Steve and Jim, and to her husband. She lovingly cared for all dogs and cats that crossed her path, whether to feed them, find them a home, or to make them a part of her family.

Carol’s passion from her early years on was classical music, with Mozart being one of her favorites. In the late 1950’s, she performed as an operatic soprano in Los Angeles. Carol’s avorite opera singer was Maria Callas. Carol never lost her deep appreciation for classical music, and during the last 35 years of her life, she enthusiastically played classical guitar. Carol’s sons gained tremendously from her love of music and the arts.

Carol was an adult convert to the Catholic Church. Through her calm and resilient faith, her husband also converted to Catholicism, and the couple ultimately renewed their marriage vows in the Catholic Church. Carol’s strong belief in Christ served her unwaveringly, through both personal triumph and tragedy over the years. Although Carol struggled with certain issues in the Church, she remained true and faithful to Christ, and devoutly used the Rosary in her prayers.

Carol lived life completely, without reservation. She lived to serve and provide joy to others, her husband, her sons, her friends, a person in need, and the many animals she saved and cared for. Carol will be sorely missed.

Carol is survived by her loving husband, Maldon; two sons, Stephen Laitinen of Minneapolis, and James (Kirsten) Laitinen of St. Paul; a grandson, Bodhi; sister-in-law, Ronnelle Laitinen; and a niece, Rebecca (Richard) Dunn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister-in-law, Dorla Bernu; two brothers-in-law, Manley Laitinen and Mervel Bernu; and a son, Christopher.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 19, at Dickinson Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 1425 Jackson St., La Crosse. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 1 p.m. until time of service.

Richard T. Frankian, Innovative Engineer Who Helped Build Several Communities, Dies at 81

FRANKIAN, RICHARD TIBBETTS - April 17, 1929 - May 22, 2010

Long time Burbank resident Richard T. "Dick" Frankian, beloved husband, father and grandfather and an innovative geotechnical engineer who helped build several local communities, died of a heart ailment near his vacation home in Port Alberni, British Columbia. He was 81.

Most of the residents of Southern California and the Bay Area likely live in a development, drive over bridges or work in a setting that had Mr. Frankian's engineering touch related to it. A world-class leader in the area of slope stability, he was the primary geotechnical consultant for three of the largest development projects in the history of Los Angeles county: Albertson Ranch/Calabasas, Valencia/Santa Clarita and Newhall Ranch. Before that, he had conducted research on projects in several other communities including San Pedro, Glendale, Pasadena, Catalina Island and Portugese Bend in Rolling Hills.

Having top secret clearance, he was responsible for identifying the soil characteristics for the Atlas Missile sites in the United States, making presentations directly to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He was also a geotechnical consultant to the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission, and had worked for the State of California Division of Bridges.Mr. Frankian's early career was spent with the firms of Dames & Moore, the Bechtel Co. and the Parsons Co., all worldwide leaders in the engineering field. He then founded his own firm, R.T. Frankian & Associates, in 1963, which has served clients in 38 states and six countries.

Mr. Frankian was a co-founder of the Sigma Phi Delta Engineering Fraternity at both UCLA and UC Berkeley, and a founding member of the Soil and Foundation Engineers Association (SAFEA), now called California Geotechnical Engineering Association (CalGeo). He was also a member of the Technical Advisory Committee responsible for developing the inaugural California Geotechnical Engineering registration exam. He was lecturer at UCLA for ten years in the fields of soil mechanics and engineering until handing that off to another member of his firm.

Mr. Frankian was the only child of Sooren and Eunice Tibbetts Frankian and is preceded in death by his beloved Joeann, his wife of 35 years who died in 1985. He is survived by Rosemary, his wife of 17 years; his children, Mary L. and Greg Chambers of Roseville, California; Virginia S. Frankian of Vancouver, BC; Nancy J. and Mark Pierce of Burbank, California; Dorothy J. and Gabe Margve of Burbank, California; Mark R. and Nanette Frankian of Saugus, California; and James A. and Suzy Frankian of Burbank; his grandchildren Timothy and Elizabeth Chambers, Mathew and Steven Pierce, Nicholas and Angelique Margve, Micayla, Karis Gwen and Abigail Frankian, and Jacqueline, Clayton, Hope and J. William Frankian. His step-children Thomas and Janet Wineland; Robert and Kim Wineland; Jennifer Wineland Shelton; and J'Amy and Russel Babb; and step-grandchildren Brad Wineland, Kate Wonser, Molly, Hanna, and Emma Wineland, Lyndsey Rickabaugh, Leah Paul, Lanette Shelton; and Thomas, James, Em'Lee and Robert Babb; and step- great-grandchildren Carter and Cannon Rickabaugh and Alison Wineland.

His friends, clients, colleagues and work associates will miss his tremendous intellect, friendly smile, excellent sense of humor as well as the care and attention that he was always willing to give to those he worked and shared time with. Dick was a generous and kind boss that made his employees feel like they were part of the family. His family is blessed with an abundance of memories of times spent sharing holidays, playing numerous games of cribbage, hearts and Parcheesi. As well as an unlimited number of hours fishing and swimming in the lakes and streams surrounding the family cabin located near Huntington Lake, California.

The time spent with his grandchildren and step-grandchildren at his vacation home in Port Alberni, British Columbia, a.k.a. "CAMP GRAMP", are among the most cherished and will be the times most missed. Mr. Frankian was a man of deep faith and conviction. He encouraged his friends and family to put their trust in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior just as he had done.

After his retirement Mr. Frankian enjoyed fellowshipping with other believers from his church community in Port Alberni or at the First Presbyterian Church of Burbank where he and his family have been long time members.

A service of celebration will be held on Sunday, June 6th at the First Presbyterian Church of Burbank, 521 East Olive Ave in Burbank at 3:00 PM with a reception immediately following in the church's Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers donations can be mailed c/o R. T. Frankian & Associates, 1329 Scott Rd, Burbank 91504. Please indicate donations for the R. T. Frankian Memorial Scholarship fund on the memo line.

Rita Diane Rebbe Oden, BHS 1960

Rita Diane Rebbe Oden, BHS 1960
Sept. 27, 1942 — Jan. 9, 2007

Rita Diane Oden, beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend, was peacefully lifted up and released from her recent medical struggles and welcomed to God's eternal loving home Tuesday.

Rita leaves behind many loved ones, whose lives are forever changed through her examples of strength, Christ-like love and easy-going spirit. With mounting cancer trials later in life, Rita showed strength in the knowledge of her increasing illness and faced diversity with courage and optimism.

Rita was the second of five children born to Henry and Margaret Rebbe in Rock Springs, Wyo., where her father was employed as superintendent of schools. Her family later moved to Southern California in the early 1950s, where she graduated from Burbank High School in 1960. She attended the University of Southern California, majoring in microbiology. She met her soul mate, Clifford L. Oden, there and later married him on Sept. 12, 1964.

While moving from Southern California to New York during Cliff's employment, they raised three beautiful children together: Craig, Eric and Kimberli. The family was relocated to Brea, Calif., in 1970 when ARCO relocated their corporate headquarters to Los Angeles. From 1970 to 1989, both Rita and Cliff volunteered their time and energies to many community organizations and youth programs that their children participated in. The two were instrumental in the development and operation of the Brea Booster and Community Foundations, while spearheading the planning, development and eventual construction of the new modern, technologically advanced Brea High School.

When Rita's husband, Cliff, retired from Atlantic Richfield Company in 1985 due to health problems, they searched over the next four years for the perfect retirement home and community, eventually settling in Foster in 1989. Finding their dream home along side Foster Lake (Cliff thinks he's a fisherman), Rita and Cliff formed new friendships and became involved in many local community activities and economic development programs.

In 1990, they teamed up with Marge Gail and other community organizers in developing the Sweet Home Economic Development Group and the initial Oregon Jamboree, which today continues to benefit from their contributions.

Rita's talents were many, include cooking, card making, calligraphy, needlework, scrap booking and playing the electric piano. In addition to her God-given abilities to touch the lives of all she met, Rita's greatest accomplishments, memories and fondest moments came as a wife, mother and grandmother when preparing large festive meals on holidays and special occasions for the entire family and friends.

She lovingly devoted her life to the relationship she shared with her husband, Cliff, working side-by-side in accomplishing their shared interests and visions.Rita's presence in this life will be greatly missed. Her smile, charisma and simple ability to bring joy and meaning to all those around her will continue to flourish in the lives that she has touched and shall serve as an example of her everyday belief that our true life's prodding and highest calling along its path is to truly love one another.

Rita is survived by her loving husband, Clifford Lorance Oden; sons Craig Lorance Oden and Eric Douglas Oden; daughter Kimberli Jo (Oden) Schmidt; stepdaughter Michele Reichardt Robelen; adoring grandchildren Victoria and Katelyn Schmidt, and Danielle, Dominique and Desire Oden; sisters Bette Tillett and Lana Fredericks; brother Randall Rebbe; nieces and nephews Daniel and Dale Marks, Ted and Tim Oden, Debbie Tracy, Shannon Tillett, Cory Tillett and Erin Fredericks.

A private celebration of Rita's life will be at noon Saturday at her and Cliff's residence.Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements

Former Leader sports writer dies

December 01, 2001, Molly Shore, Burbank Leader

BURBANK -- Darin August Esper, a former sports writer for the Burbank Leader and Los Angeles Times, died Nov. 25, 2001, at his family's Burbank home. He was 40.

Esper is remembered by his colleagues as a well-rounded sports writer who could cover anything from high school sports to professional auto racing. "When it came to local sports knowledge, there was nobody that knew more than Darin Esper," said Jeff Tully, the Leader's sports editor. "Along with the sports knowledge, he was always a very nice person."

In his reporting for the Times, Esper covered the Long Beach Grand Prix and the California 500 in Fontana. "Motor sports was his passion," said Mike Kupper, the Times' senior assistant sports editor, who sometimes went on assignments with Esper. "Darin was a very hard worker. Nothing got between him and what he wanted to get done," Kupper said.

Born Jan. 18, 1961, in Santa Monica, Esper was a lifelong resident of Burbank. Although he didn't participate in sports in high school, choosing instead to play the French horn in the school band, he was an avid sports fan. "Since he was a Burbank graduate and came from a sports family, his knowledge was invaluable when he worked for me at the paper," Tully said.

It was Esper's brother Damin who preceded Tully as the paper's sports editor. Esper's dad, Dwain, is a sports writer and announcer. "All of us in this family are not athletic, but we admire sports," Dwain Esper said.

Esper is survived by his parents, Dwain and Diane Esper, and his brothers Damin and Dilan.
No funeral service is planned.

Donald R. Irwin, BHS 1946

Donald R. Irwin, BHS 1946

Donald Irwin, 82, led California Office of Emergency Services
Published Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, Sacramento Bee
Donald R. Irwin, a former head of the state Office of Emergency Services, died Feb. 8 of a stroke. He was 82.
Mr. Irwin spent more than a quarter-century at OES helping Californians recover from floods, fires, earthquakes and riots. He started in 1965 in the communications division, where a 24-hour, statewide system sent out air raid alerts during the Cold War era and provided a central hub for agencies responding to disasters.
He climbed the ranks to regional coordinator and chief deputy director before Gov. George Deukmejian appointed him director in 1990. He projected calm during emergencies to help keep employee morale high and fought budget cutters for resources to respond to communities in need of help, former colleagues said.
"No matter how tense the situation was, Don didn't get rattled," retired OES worker Jim Black said. "When people were in trouble and needed somebody to run to, Don was the guy everyone ran to."
A strong electronics background served Mr. Irwin in diverse jobs before he joined OES. He graduated from Don Martin Radio School in Los Angeles as a broadcast engineer and worked for the Kern County communications center and civil defense agency.

In 1955, he switched to radio as an evening program host at KPMC in Bakersfield. He was proud that the station's 50,000-watt signal reached Oregon, Washington state and Canada.
"He had a sweater that a Canadian listener knitted and sent to him," said his son, Michael.
He joined KHIQ in Sacramento in 1960 as radio stations began introducing automation. He worked for two years as an Aerojet testing engineer before losing his job in a layoff and joining OES.

Donald Robert Irwin was born in Los Angeles and reared in Burbank. He was the last of seven children born to Oklahoma farmers who had packed their family into two Model T Fords and moved to California in 1923.
He worked in the ground crew for American Airlines cargo service during high school and served in the Army Air Corps. He was married to the former Betty Louise Hocking, who died in 2009.
Mr. Irwin was active in the community as a past master of the Free and Accepted Masons of California and a member of Union Kit Carson Lodge No. 58 and Bicentennial Daylight Lodge No. 830. He enjoyed spending time with his wife at their Lake Tahoe cabin and traveling on cruises to Alaska and Hawaii.
But he was never unavailable during a disaster. "Even in his retirement years, he always carried a (police and fire) scanner with him," his son said.
