Donald Louis "Don" Agrati aka Don Grady, BHS 1962

Donald Louis "Don" Agrati aka Don Grady, BHS 1962

Don Grady, ex-Mouseketeer and 'My Three Sons' star, dies at 68

Don Grady, who sang and danced as a Mouseketeer on "The Mickey Mouse Club," played son Robbie on the long-running family sitcom "My Three Sons," and later became a composer and songwriter, died Wednesday, June 27, 2012. He was 68. Grady died at his home in Thousand Oaks after a four-year battle with cancer, said his wife, Ginny.

A native of San Diego, Grady was born Don Agrati on June 8, 1944. His father, Lou, was in the Navy and later became a sausage maker. His mother, Mary, was a talent agent. The family moved to Lafayette in the Bay Area, where Grady developed a talent for music and dancing. He told the Contra Costa Times that he took clarinet and accordion lessons and later taught himself bass, guitar and the trumpet.

His musical talents landed him an audition with Walt Disney's "Mickey Mouse Club" when he was in middle school. He sang and danced on the show for several years but left for a part on "My Three Sons" when he was 16. Grady also appeared in other television shows of the era, including the "Rifleman" and "Wagon Train." Don graduated from Burbank High School in 1962.

He later began a new career as a composer and songwriter for television, theater and films."His passion was music," his wife, Ginny, said. "And it was because he played seven different musical instruments that he got onto the Mouseketeers show. TV was a sideline to all he ever wanted to do, which was play music."

Besides his wife of 26 years and his mother, Grady is survived by two children, Joey and Tessa, and a sister, Marilou Reichel. Another sister, actress Lani O’Grady, died of a drug overdose in 2001.

Keiko Morimoto Hentell, BHS Principal

Keiko Morimoto Hentell, BHS Principal

Los Angeles Times (CA) - March 19, 2000

Keiko Hentell; Former Educator at Burbank, Van Nuys High Schools In '94, students protested her removal, saying she was being punished for encouraging diversity on campus.

Keiko Hentell, a former principal at Burbank High School who struggled to promote cultural diversity programs among students, died March 11, 2000 of complications related to cancer. She was 59.

After three years as principal, Hentell was removed by the Burbank Unified School District without explanation in 1994. The move sparked protests from students and human rights groups, who said she was being punished for encouraging ethnic clubs at the high school. Hentell, a Japanese American, sued the district in federal court, contending that she lost her job because of race and sex discrimination. She later settled the lawsuit by agreeing to resign without compensation.

A longtime educator, Hentell was born Keiko Morimoto in 1940. Her early childhood was spent in an internment camp that Japanese Americans were forced into during World War II. She later earned a bachelor's degree from UC Berkeley and a master's degree in educational administration from USC. "Keiko was well-loved by all of the students and most of the parents who came in contact with her," said Ted McConkey, a former Burbank councilman. "She was just a wonderful person, but she got a rotten deal in Burbank from the school board."

After leaving Burbank High, Hentell worked as an assistant principal at Van Nuys High School in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Controversy continued to dog her, however, and the district reassigned Hentell to Griffith Middle School in 1996, amid charges that she failed to act on complaints about a teacher accused of molesting female students.

Hentell traveled widely, visiting Singapore, India, Israel, France and Mexico, among other countries. She spent two years studying comparative literature in Tokyo, Japan. Most recently, she worked at the Achievement Council, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to ensure all students equal access to college.

Hentell is survived by her husband, Marc Hentell of Los Angeles; two sons, Philip and Erik, also of Los Angeles; a brother, Tak Morimoto of Pasadena; and a sister, June Sakaguchi of Fresno. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, 3300 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles. Contributions in Hentell's memory may be made to the Keiko Morimoto Hentell Scholarship Fund, c/o the Achievement Council, 3460 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 420, Los Angeles, CA 90010.

Judson P. Bradshaw, BHS 1930

Judson P. Bradshaw, BHS 1930

Judson Bradshaw, 92; performing arts his passion

By Jack Williams, Staff Writer, U-T San Diego, March 15, 2005

Once he discarded dreams of being an actor, Judson P. Bradshaw found he had the right stuff for a leading role in another field – education. Beginning as a teacher of drama, speech and English, he rose to director of adult and continuing education in the San Diego Community College District. Whether teaching, directing school plays or joining community theater productions, performing arts remained a passion.

In 1993, after moving into a seniors residential community in Spring Valley, Mr. Bradshaw founded and directed a reader's theater program. He died of complications from a stroke March 8, 2005 at Grossmont Hospital. He was 92. "What he liked about education was seeing people grow and expand their abilities," daughter Judith Quiett said. "It always pleased him." "His way to stay in theater was to teach it."

As a young man, Mr. Bradshaw acted in college plays at the University of Redlands and worked as a singing waiter. But his aspirations for an acting career didn't meet with the approval of his parents, who had worked as missionaries in China for several years. Mr. Bradshaw went on to earn a bachelor's degree at Redlands and a master's in speech and drama at the University of Southern California. He also pursued studies at USC toward a doctorate of education.

He taught drama at schools in Coalinga and San Diego before joining the Navy in 1944. Assigned to landing ship transports in the Pacific, he served two years of active duty. In 1950, Mr. Bradshaw was promoted from classroom teaching to administration. As principal of Hoover-Crawford Adult School, he oversaw more than 4,000 students and a curriculum of some 90 courses during the 1950s. The job often entailed reporting to his office at 9 a.m. and tending to administrative duties at various adult education sites until 9:45 p.m. During his tenure in adult education, Mr. Bradshaw held several executive positions locally and statewide. In 1965, he was elected to the board of directors of the National Association of Public School Education.

Mr. Bradshaw served as president of the El Cajon Boulevard Civic Association in 1955 and of the East San Diego Kiwanis Club in 1962. When adult and continuing education in the San Diego Unified School District shifted to the San Diego Community College District in 1970, Mr. Bradshaw was appointed director. In 1973, one year before his retirement, he received the George C. Mann Distinguished Service Award from the California Council for Adult Education.

In retirement, he taught a variety of San Diego State University Extension courses and worked part time at Answers to Travel, a Mission Valley travel agency. As a travel agent, he led three extensive tours to China, his boyhood home. He kept his hand in theater by directing community productions and served from 1977 to 1980 as vice president of San Diego Civic Light Opera. While living in the College Area, Mr. Bradshaw helped develop the College Avenue Adult Center. It provided daylong activities for seniors and featured various speakers.

Born in Malden, Mass., he moved as a child to Szechuan Province, where his parents opened a medical missionary clinic and church. At 8, he returned with his parents to the United States and attended schools in Burbank. His first teaching job, while pursuing a master's at USC, was at Burbank Military Academy in 1938.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Shirlee Zoe Bradshaw; daughters, Judith Zoe Quiett of Ashland, Ore., and Peggy Gwen Palm of Alpine; two granddaughters; and two great-granddaughters.

A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Mount Miguel Covenant Village, Bailey Center, 325 Kempton St., Spring Valley. A viewing is scheduled for 10 a.m. tomorrow at Featheringill Mortuary, 6322 El Cajon Blvd., followed by an interment service at 1 p.m. at El Camino Memorial Park. Donations are suggested to Grossmont Hospice.
