Linda Sue Martino Van Wagner, BHS 1971

Linda Sue Martino Van Wagner, BHS 1971

From Linda Martino's step son advising us of her death.  Here is what he wrote and posted on his Facebook page in July:

Yesterday, just after 4 p.m., we lost our incredible Stepmom Linda Van Wagner. Linda came in to our lives when Alex and I were very young. She gave us an incredible extended family, the Martinos, Hunters and Macheskis, our Brother Brian Van Wagner and from the very beginning, countless fond memories, delicious meals, thoughtful gifts, a lot of laughs, wonderful experiences, lessons in life and so much more.

Linda always encouraged get-togethers, Sunday dinners and yearly family trips. She was a hard worker, a very hard worker and provided a wonderful life for us all. She was glamorous, she had perfect skin and wore beautiful jewelry. She dressed impeccably, was well traveled and drove cool cars. She had life long friends who adored her. She was awesome.

Linda battled breast cancer in the 90's and beat it. About 6 years ago, she developed a brain tumor, and fought it and beat it. However, earlier this year, it came back and her health declined. She moved in to Alex and Jenna's guest house in March and she spent her last months surrounded by her boys, grandchildren, her sisters, family, friends and wonderful nurses. She was a warrior to the very end.

Linda's journey ended at 66 years old, far too young, but she did so much. She got to meet and love all of her Grandchildren and dance will all of us boys at our weddings. Although some of the kids won't get to know her as we did, the memories and stories will live on and Linda Sue will always be with us.

Judith Kay Dussault Mittelman, BHS 1959

Judith Kay Dussault Mittelman, BHS 1959

Judy Mittelman passed away on December 24, 2019 of heart failure at the age of 78.

Judy was born in Glendale and moved several times before the family bought a house and settled in Burbank. She attended William McKinley Elementary School, and then went on to John Muir Junior High School. Her high school years were spent at Burbank High where she developed several life-long friends. While there she enjoyed being a member of the drill team .

After graduation, Judy worked at Lockheed, NBC, and Warner Brothers Studios where she became an extra. Absolutely understandable since she was a beautiful, vivacious young lady! She also went on to serve as a stewardess for United Airlines.

She met the love of her life, Joe Mittelman, in 1965 on a date set up by her sister. They were a close-knit, devoted couple who thoroughly enjoyed each other’s company, traveling and spending time with their family. She had 3 stepsons and one step daughter, three granddaughters and two great-grandchildren. She loved and savored time with the grandchildren and was a doting great-grandmother.

Joe passed away a year ago, and Judy missed him greatly. She loved being with people, doing crossword puzzles and telling stories about her experiences when she was young. She was a great story teller, but perhaps is best remembered for her wonderful sense of humor. Often she was told, “You should write a book!”

She will be missed.

Her mother Virginia Dussault also attended Burbank High

Albert "Bob" Santoyo, BHS 1946

Albert ‘Bob’ Santoyo, BHS 1946

September 13, 1928-November 13, 2020

It is with great sadness that the family of Albert “Bob” Santoyo shares his passing on November 13,2020. Bob was born on Flower Street in Burbank on September 13, 1928, the 7th of 8 children. He was a “Burbank Bulldog” from Burbank High and, upon graduation in 1946, went to Boot Camp at Fort Ord and served in Korea at the tail end of the Korean War.

When he returned home, he worked with his brother Benny at Ford Agency in Burbank, painting cars. He liked to bowl and that’s where he met his wife, Margaret, whom he married in May, 1964, and became a Dad to her 4 children: Pam Grant and Bill Roberts, both of whom predeceased him in death, and Beth and Robin Roberts. Within a year, Bob and Margaret were blessed with the birth of a son, Ronald Paul Santoyo, in 1965.

Bob bought his home in Burbank in 1964 and lived there for the rest of his life. His wife Margaret passed in 1983 and he retired at the age of 70 from the L.A. Police Department, where he had continued to paint cars.

Bob’s life was full: He loved custom cars, working out daily in the local gym, and going to daily Mass at Holy Rosary Church, where he was on the Finance Committee and a part of the caregiving ministry. He was DODGER BLUE all the way, bringing his and the neighbors’ kids to the baseball games. He even had the distinction of going to the 1st SUPER BOWL!

Bob was very kind, silently generous, quietly spiritual and extremely loyal and devoted to his family and friends. He will be missed by all but particularly his son, Ronnie and wife Kim; stepchildren Beth and Robin; 8 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; his

brother Richard; and many cousins in Mexico to whom he was devoted all his life. Due to the COVID-19, services will be limited to family members only.

Alan George Hyde, Jr., BHS 1988

Alan George Hyde, Jr., BHS 1988

Alan George Hyde, Jr. was born on May 12, 1970 in Santa Barbara, California and passed away on August 6, 1986 in Burbank, California. He grew up in Burbank and while at Burbank High he was a stagehand on the school production of various play's handling wardrobe and lighting. According to his fellow classmates he was a cool dude and had a great smile. The girls thought he was good looking with his long wavy hair.

But that all changed on August 6, 1986 when Alan's body was found dead in his bedroom from a gunshot wound. The police were never able to determine Alan's death as a suicide or an accident. Some classmates believe it was a suicide and others an accident. His then girlfriend believes it was an accident because they had plan to hang out all day that day, but her father wanted her to attend a family function that day so she was meeting Alan later that day when she returned home. When she went over to his house later that god awful day she found police cars and crime scene tape at Alan's house and that is when she found  out about Alan's death. She told me that Alan did have a troubled childhood growing up.

We will never really know what happened that god awful day, that is only known by Alan and God. It is not really important on how Alan died but it is important that we never forget him. He was only 16 years old but he made an impact on his classmates and still to this day they remember and honor him and his short life. They play songs that remind them of Alan, they post pictures and stories about him. One will pull out Alan's Red Sox Jacket with his name on it.

So you see Alan is gone, but he is never forgotten. If he had lived he would of graduated from Burbank High in 1988. Alan was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, California. May he rest in peace.

Marilyn Morgan Olmstead, BHS 1961

Marilyn Morgan Olmstead, BHS 1961

Dec. 8, 1943 — Sept. 30, 2020

It is with deep sadness that we observe the passing of Marilyn Morgan Olmstead, on Sept. 30, 2020. She was struck by a car while riding her bike in Davis. She was 76.

Marilyn was a professor emerita of chemistry at UC Davis, a Fellow of the American Chemical Society and the American Crystallographic Association, and an international leader in the crystallographic study of fullerenes, or “Buckyballs.” She published more than 1,100 articles in scientific journals and had been cited more than 34,000 times. Marilyn also was an extraordinary teacher, mentor and advocate for junior faculty and students.

While Marilyn’s exceptional productivity and impact are well known, fewer people know the obstacles she had to overcome as a female scientist. Marilyn joined the UC Davis chemistry department in 1969 when she was 25. By 2000, she directed one of the most productive crystallographic labs in the world and was the most published and cited member of the chemistry department, and yet she was never offered a faculty position. Finally, in 2003, when Marilyn was 60 years old, she was appointed to the faculty as a full professor.

Marilyn was born on Dec. 8, 1943, in Glendale. She graduated from Burbank High School in 1961, earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Reed College in 1965 and was awarded a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to support her graduate studies. She received her Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1969. She was the only woman in her graduating class of 40 students.

Marilyn developed an interest in science as a child. Her parents allowed her to pursue her “tomboy” interests in cowboys, stamps, rocks and insects, and when she was 8, bought her a microscope.

At 12, she obtained a general operator’s license in ham radio, becoming the youngest female ham radio operator in the U.S. She built radio transmitters and antennas and communicated using Morse code with “hams” as far away as South Africa.

During summers, she worked as a draftswoman at Lockheed and a YMCA camp counselor. She was an insatiable reader and played tennis and piano. She was also Burbank High School’s homecoming queen.

Marilyn maintained these interests as an adult. She used microscopes almost daily and built and improved scientific instrumentation. She collaborated with scientists from around the world and was a visiting scholar in Switzerland, China, Malaysia and India. She was also a host mother to exchange students from Italy and Turkey.

She spent memorable days with family and friends at her cabin at Alpine Meadows, skied at resorts throughout the U.S. and hiked mountains in a score of countries. Almost every day, she biked to work and played tennis. She was an excellent cook and was always sharing recipes and expanding her repertoire. She loved her book club, playing the piano and going to concerts at the Mondavi Center. She was kind, generous and beautiful.

Despite the mistreatment she experienced as a female scientist, Marilyn remained positive. It gave her great joy to teach, advise and mentor junior faculty and students. She constantly advocated for them, sought funding for state-of-the-art research infrastructure, and imparted the skills and guidance they needed to succeed.

She said, “My graduate students have never ceased to challenge and inspire me, and I am happy to see many of them continue in professional careers. The number of women in science is no longer that surprising, but, looking back, times have changed.”

Even after her official retirement, Marilyn continued active research and mentorship and was branching into an entirely new field of chemistry. In the words of one of her colleagues, “Marilyn truly was a pioneering spirit not only in science but also as a woman. She set an example of excellence and grace we all can aspire to emulate.”

Ronald Cobb, BHS 1955

Ron Cobb, ‘Back to the Future’ DeLorean Designer, Dies at 83

By Eli Countryman, Variety, September 21, 2020

Film designer and cartoonist Ron Cobb died Thursday of Lewy body dementia at the age of 83. Cobb was a significant influence on the look and aesthetics of films including “Alien,” “Star Wars” and “Back to the Future.” Cobb died on his birthday, Monday, after an illustrious career contributing to production design in Hollywood. He served as a consultant for “Back to the Future,” providing the initial designs for a DeLorean modified to travel through time, and several iconic alien species in the “Star Wars” universe.

His credits range from “Star Wars” creatures like the Gotals and Ithorians from the Mos Eisley Cantina sequence  to various different aircrafts seen across the film industry, including “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and 1978’s “Alien.” In the latter, Cobb contributed to the exterior look of the Nostromo alien ship while also designing its interior sets to bring the vision to life on screen. Designer Calum Alexander Watt paid tribute to his Semotic Standard graphics for “Alien,” which he said were “hugely influential.”

Cobb’s film career began in 1956, the year after he graduated from Burbank High School. He worked at Walt Disney Studios as an inbetweener and breakdown artist on “Sleeping Beauty.”

He later contributed special effects to “Dark Star” and served as a production designer on “Conan the Barbarian,” where he came up with the character’s armor and weapon designs, as well as architectural aspects of the set. Other major projects Cobb is credited on include the 1989 feature film “Total Recall,” “The Last Starfighter” and “Leviathan.” Cobb also served as a director, writer and cartoonist throughout his career.

In 1982, he was slated to direct “Night Skies,” a proposed sequel to “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” The project eventually got scrapped, however, with some of the material being used of Steven Spielberg’s “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.” His directorial debut came with a 1992 Australian comedy film named “Garbo,” which follows garbage collectors and their truck, Greta.

He has writing credits for the “Shelter Skelter” episode of “The Twilight Zone” and also helped write the story for a video game in the 1990s. Four collections of Cobb’s cartoons from the 1960s and 1970s have also been published as books.

Cobb is survived by his wife, Robin Love, and son, Nicky Cobb.
