Ronnie Garner, BHS 1962

posted by his daughter, Kelli Garner...

It is with a heavy heart and much sadness that I report the passing of my father, Ronnie Garner. Ronnie passed away last night July 16, 2019 in Henderson, Nevada after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Ronnie had a distinguished law enforcement career spanning over 30 years across three agencies culminating as Chief of Police for Arcadia PD, from where he retired in 1999. He was a proud Vietnam veteran and beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He was married to his cherished wife, Paula, for over 50 years. He leaves an indelible legacy of admiration and respect with those who both knew and loved him, and will be deeply missed.

Ronnie will be missed by so many besides his loving family. He was always a "ray of sunshine" with a wonderful sense of humor.

Steve Gary Kubelka, BHS 1969

Steve Kubelka

April 23,1951-January 22,1990

Steve left this world on Jan. 22 to join his lover, Charlie Weaver, who had passed away only seven weeks earlier. Steve bravely participated in the S.F. General Compound Q study last year in the hope that he could make a difference in the AIDS epidemic. That treatment failed to make a difference in Steve’s own life expectancy, though. Steve died of an AIDS-related illness with his mother at his side at Eisenhower Medical Center in Palm Springs.

Steve was a longtime resident of San Francisco. He had just moved himself and his lover to Palm Springs in October. His hope was that he could extend both their lives in the more tranquil surroundings of the desert.

Steve is survived by his parents, Bob and Pat of Burbank, his brothers, Bob Jr. and Mike, and the many friends he had in San Francisco.

Steve devoted his life to Charlie. He constantly strived to better their lives. After Charlie was disabled by the effects of Compound Q, Steve was not satisfied to trust Charlie’s care to healthcare professionals. He made Charlie’s care and rehabilitation his full time job.

Steve was also the best of friends. He was a great listener who was never judgmental. He was there to share the fun times and he was always supportive during the bad times. Steve was an avid collector of dance music and spent many hours mixing music and composing tapes for his friends’ enjoyment. He was greatly loved and is already sorely missed.

A memorial of Steve’s life will be held during March. For information, please call 558-9037. Donations may be made in Steve’s name to the Shanti Project or the S.F. General AIDS Ward, Volunteer Program.

Robert John Sanfilippo, BHS 1968

Robert "Bob" Sanfilippo
SEPTEMBER 16, 1950 ~ JUNE 20, 2019 (AGE 68)

Robert “Bob” Sanfilippo, 68, of Jamestown, New York passed away at home on June 20, 2019 from complications of kidney failure.

Born in Jamestown, New York, his parents Eva and Joseph Sanfilippo moved to Burbank California with their three sons when Bob was 1. Bob was the youngest of the three sons. Bob graduated from Burbank High School and the University of California Irvine. He opened and ran a tax and financial planning practice in Fountain Valley, California for 30 years. Following his official retirement, he and his wife followed his coworker and extended family to Post Falls, Idaho.

He was amazed by the beauty of North Idaho and would sit for hours on his back deck and watch others enjoy the Spokane River as they floated by, or as they cast a line in the water. If you floated by, he was the one sitting on his “perch” waving as you passed. When asked by his Southern California friends, “Why Post Falls?” He would smile and tell them of his church home at St George Catholic Church, the friends he had from Knights of Columbus, the way an osprey hovers as it fishes, or the Idaho night sky which is filled with brilliant stars. “North Idaho is where God lives” he would say.

Bob is best remembered for his strong work ethic, his dry humor, and his deep and quiet love for his family. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Linda and two sons; Brian, a certified substance abuse counselor living in Jefferson City, Missouri and Ian, a Firefighter-Paramedic living in McKinney, Texas. He was blessed to have a beautiful daughter in law, Alexandra, added to the family May of 2017.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, June 27, 2019 at St George Catholic Church: 2010 N Lucas St, Post Falls, ID 83854. A reception and Celebration of “A life well-lived” will follow the mass at English Funeral Chapel, Post Falls.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Idaho Disaster Dogs or Guns and Hoses of North Texas will be gratefully appreciated.

Burton L. Court, BHS 1954

Burton “Burt” L. Court passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Wednesday, November 29, 2017. Born in Burbank, California in 1935.

Burt grew up in the San Fernando Valley and attended Burbank High School graduating in 1954. Burt later moved to Upland/Rancho Cucamonga to pursue business opportunities. He owned and operated Court and Thomas, Inc. for over 30 years. He lived in Rancho Cucamonga until his passing.

Burt looked at life as an adventure and capitalized on all that it had to offer. Whether it was racing motorcycles and go-karts in his youth, dramatically growing his chemical pump business, racing boats (he won the Long Beach to Catalina Ski Race as a driver on two separate occasions) or driving his cars fast – he loved life.

He also had a passion for his family – he was most proud of this part of his life. In passing, Burt is survived by his daughter Pam Cummings (and husband Rick), daughter Nancy Court (and long-time boyfriend Andy Slotke) , step-son Shaun Skinner (and wife Marci), step-daughter Carrie Esparza (and husband Javier), and seven grandchildren plus one great grandchild that he did spend some time bragging about – grandchildren Mandy Adams, Heidi and Rick Cummings Jr., Ryan and Jennifer Skinner, Samuel and Catherine (“Cate”) Esparza and great granddaughter Kaylee Adams. Burt is also survived by his lady-friend Sherrie Wood. Burt was preceded in death by his wife of over 30 years Nancy Court and his two brothers Hank Court and Jim Court.

Burt will be dearly missed by his family and many friends, but if you knew Burt - you know wherever he is – he is not doing any one thing for too long – or as he liked to say “I’m sticking to the vinyl”, he is enjoying a piece of Cinnamon Dentyne gum, going fast in whatever he is driving and most importantly of all – he won’t be late.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the City of Hope, Duarte or the Veteran’s Administration.

John Raymond DeLesley, Jr., BHS 1967

John R. DeLesley Jr.
MARCH 16, 1948 – MARCH 7, 2019

John R. DeLesley Jr. 1948-2019

John’s passing was so sudden and unexpected, after a six week illness he thought was influenza, that the shock of his passing has left our hearts broken yet still soaring with him, in spirit. No sweeter, kinder and more gentle soul could have accomplished what John did, by enriching our lives with his unique sense of the world, our galaxy, and how we all experience our glorious existence.

Johnny leaves us treasuring all he taught us about Human Dignity, Love, Friendship, Spirituality and our lives. He left us so many “Johnnyisms” of delightful stories about his many avocations, including astronomy, spirituality, our humanity and respect; as well as meditation; and his love of photography and “antiquing” for unique books and videos, mostly about the nature of our galaxy and our earth’s animals, geology and geography.

Johnny, as he was often called by friends, worked for over forty years as a desk Manager for The Safari Inn and the Coast Annabelle Hotel, in Burbank, California, where he had resided since 1948. After he received his Associates of Arts at L.A Valley College, he entered the service as a National Guardsman, PFC in the U.S. Military and left with an honorable discharge.

He worked for Pacific Telephone, yet received a better offer at the Safari Inn, and remained a loyal and committed employee at both the Safari Inn and the Annabelle Hotel for over forty years. He often spoke of friends, respected colleagues and bosses and of the very loyal guests, who returned over the years, with whom he enjoyed special longstanding relationships, as well.

John is survived by his Beloved sister Susan (Delesley) Reed and his brother in law William Reed; He was a beloved uncle and great uncle of: Kyle (Audra Angelo) Reed; Grand Niece: Lauren, Emily Dale (Whitmayer) Picolla, Olivia Picolla, Michele (Whitmayer) Aggasid, Grand Nephew Trevor Grant (Christine Trang) Reed, Bryce Aggasid.

John is preceded in death by his parents; Josephine (Wysocki) DeLesley, John R. DeLesley Sr.; and his sister Mary Lou (DeLesley) Whitmayer. A special Mention to those who grieve with us: his friends at work have been stunned by his sudden illness and passing, and will be having a gathering Celebration of Life to Memorialize John DeLesley.

Services will take place at The Coast Annabelle Hotel/Safari Inn 2011 W. Olive Avenue, Burbank Ca 91506 on Sunday, March 17, 2019 between 4:00pm – 6:00pm. If you wish to attend or send flowers, you may have them delivered to the Coast Anabelle Hotel, in care of Nora.

Fiery Sports Car Crash Kills 2 Burbank Men

Two men burned to death Sunday when their small sports car went out of control, flipped over and burst into flames on Forest Lawn Drive one mile west of Zoo Drive. The victims were so badly burned they were first unidentifiable, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman said.

The victims were finally identified as Randy Unch, 20, of 1823 Karen, Burbank and his roommate, Charles Tabor, 35, formerly of Mercer, Colorado. A lighter found at the scene led to the identification by a brother of Unch, Daniel Unch of Burbank. Unch is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Joseph Unch, of 1830 Karen, Burbank. The parents are on vacation and have not yet been notified of their son's death. Police are attempting to locate them in Oregon.

A witness to the crash told officers that the car ran off the roadway, skidded and overturned. The motorist said he heard screams, and as he was attempting to help the two victims the car burst into flames.

Police said the car skidded 207 feet on the roadway. They speculated that the car was traveling too fast for the curving roadway. The accident occurred at 5 am. Due to extensive damage to the car, police said they were unable to check the brakes.
