Loretta Joan Blankenship Novak, BHS 1960

May 25, 1942 - October 25, 2018

Loretta Joan Novak, 76, of Cambria, California, passed away October 25th, 2018 after a five-year battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. Loretta was born in Los Angeles in 1942. Following graduation from Burbank High School and Northridge University, Loretta became a social service Inspector for Los Angeles County where she met and married Larry Novak in 1969.

Loretta lived in Glendale, California for over thirty years, where she raised two children and established a career in property management. Loretta pursued her passion for learning at Long Beach University and learned the Chinese language while earning a Master degree in Asian American Studies. Her research and subsequent volunteer work focused on Amerasian children of U.S. servicemen immigrating to the United States.

In 2003 she pursued her life-long passion painting and moved to Cambria, where she became involved with the plein air artist community and dedicated time to her artwork every day. Loretta was happiest when out painting with the Wednesday Irregulars or hiking through the EastWest ranch woods with her neighbors and her very large dog, Cuddles. Loretta's everlasting excitement for adventure continues on within her children Curt and Amber and grandchildren Aundrea, Kevin, Kimberly, Erek, Asher and Jacobi.

Loretta will be buried in a private family ceremony in the Cambria cemetery. A public celebration of her life, memory and art will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please take time to enjoy the outdoors, snuggle a dog, or make a fanciful drawing, as that is what Loretta would have wanted.

Jeanette May Hart Baca, BHS 1947

Jeanette May Baca, 1929 - 2022

Van Nuys, CA - On Friday January 7, 2022, Jeanette May Baca peacefully passed away at the Gardens Park Balboa Memory Care Center in Van Nuys, California. This facility took such good care of her these last few years of her life. We want to thank all caretakers and staff for your kindness and for taking care of both our parents.

Our mom, Jeanette Baca, was the best mom a son could ask for. She was kind, loving and always put her children's needs first. She always said she was a boys mom and went along with everything her boys wanted to do, even joined in at times. Her laughter, smile and humor was contagious. She loved playing games with her family, casino trips & bingo. She was very active with Southern California ARC where her son Danny Baca has been a client in one of their group homes for many years.

Jeanette had many life long friends that she loved dearly and had many adventures with each of them.

She loved her daughter in laws like her own that she called them her "Bonus Daughters" instead of Daughter in Laws.

We were very blessed to have a mom like ours. We will miss and always love you mom.

Jeanette is survived by her sons, David Kettles (Debbie), Brian Kettles (Esther), and Danny Baca as well many grandchildren, great grandchildren and a great, great granddaughter.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Nick Baca and her son Randy Kettles

A celebration of life for both Jeanette and Nick will be in June 2022. Contact family for more information.

Chauncey Upton LeValley, BHS 1945

Chauncey Upton LeValley

July 26, 1927 — April 26, 2022

Chauncey Upton LeValley, passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2022, at Park Manor in Walla Walla. Chauncey was born July 26, 1927, in Glendale, CA the only child of Chauncey and Margaret LeValley and graduated Burbank High School there in California. As a young man he played saxophone and formed a band using music his mother had written for them. He was also an accomplished tap-dancer and performed during movie intermissions. Later, he pursued sports in school. Motivated to get onto the Varsity football team because he’d been told he was too small, he beefed up by baling hay during the summer at a family ranch. He was so successful and popular he became class president his senior year.

Chauncey spent a year in Naval Air Communications during the war. A couple years after he left the service, he married Loretta Jane Kirkpatrick on January 30, 1948, and had a brief stint at USC studying accounting. When Loretta became pregnant with their first child and his mother suggested he pick carpentry as a trade, he left school to pursue an apprentice license. He consequently worked many construction jobs that culminated in their purchase of a property in Woodland Hills, where they built a home from scratch. They talk of endless trips hauling bricks thrown out from gutted buildings during the Los Angeles freeway expansion. They often said they cut their teeth on that first home and learned everything they thought they’d ever need to know. Well almost.

Now with three boys and after years of frustration trying to make ends meet working as a general contractor, he made a pivotal move that would change his life. He spent the better part of the prior two years ankle deep in concrete work, sometimes up to 18 hours a day. For the toll it was taking on the family and all those hours away from home, he and Loretta reasoned that a drastic change was necessary. He packed up the whole family including three sons, and a mother-in-law into a Pontiac Catalina and moved to Walla Walla.

He worked odd jobs there including laying tile for his relative, Tom Jensen, who had a tile business in town. Eventually Loretta and he put together the funds to purchase their first property. The plan was to pay himself wages and eventually sell the home. This had all the potential for success because of his background and experience.

Their biggest break came when they purchased a large property at the corner of Francis and Blue. At first the intent was to build each duplex and sell it, as they had done before, but realized they could finance the next duplex while renting out half of the one just built. This proved to be a working combination once they finished multiple duplexes. It would be an understatement to say how all those years of working on tract homes during the Southern California housing boom played a part in their success. They would eventually build 21 units. This was long before the advent of prefab rafters and power nailers. Nearly every aspect of the construction had to be done by hand.

Now he could spend more time with his family. He coached the Cox Jones Little League baseball team while his two sons played. Every winter he took the family to ski resorts all over the state and owned a speed boat in order to water ski at the Snake River during summers.

Chauncey lived a full life. At age 50 he earned his BA in Business from Eastern Washington State University through Walla Walla Community College’s extension program. He became a pilot and flew for 20 years. He eventually got instrument rated on his Bonanza. He was involved in community service as a Rotarian and was active in “Bold Ventures” investment club. He got a real estate license and an appraiser’s certification and worked in both fields.

His love of sports carried into his later years. He became so active in tennis that he helped spearhead support for the construction of the tennis courts at Walla Walla Country Club.

In his late 60s Chauncey was a cancer survivor after chemo treatments to his bladder. He and Loretta travelled extensively. They made trips to nearly every continent. They visited The Great Wall, went on a safari in Africa and made the arduous trek up to Machu Pichu in Peru. Never afraid to do something new, at the age of 75 he bungee jumped from a high bridge in New Zealand.

Chauncey’s entrepreneurial spirit was an inspiration to others who knew him and
having the physicality and where-with-all to accomplish what he did was a testament to his character and fortitude. He is survived by his wife, Loretta Jane; and three sons: Dana Craig (Monique), Gary Todd (Gloria) and Brandon Daniel (Dawn). He has six grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the services have been postponed until a later date.  Services will be posted once we have the new date and time.

James Forrest Barthell, Sr., BHS 1953

James Barthell, BHS 1953

James Forrest Barthell Sr. was born May 2, 1935 to Billie Long (Mann) and Charles Grant Barthell, Sr. in Fort Worth, TX. He passed away Sunday, April 17, 2022 in Duncan, OK at the age of 86.

As an appropriate caution, Jim has requested that there be no Witness to The Resurrection service or other memorial gathering of friends and family in his honor. He has asked for prayers for Sally and the family. Memorial gifts may be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Duncan, OK or to BOYS TOWN, by mail at P.O. Box 8000, Boys Town, NE 68010 or online at www.boystown.org/gift.

Jim grew up in southern California and in rural northeast Iowa, where he attended a one-room, all-grades country school. He finished his public education years graduating from Burbank High School in southern California in 1953.

As a young man, Jim was very active in little theater, including several 1954 productions at The California First Theater Monument in Monterey, CA. It was there that Jim developed an interest in writing and reading dramatic poetry, an interest that would remain with him for the rest of his life. He truly loved standing before an audience, reciting one of his “Stories Told in Rhyming Verse”.

Jim was a Korean War Veteran, serving in The United States Air Force Security Service, with remote site duty in pre-statehood Territory of Alaska.

In October 1956, Jim’s enlistment in the Air Force was drawing to an end. It was then that he met and fell in love with his sweetheart and life partner to be, Marcella (Sally) Kost. They were united in marriage January 6, 1957 in Burbank, CA. In 2007 they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a recommitment of vows at First Presbyterian Church in Duncan, OK with Reverend Doctor John McGarey officiating. It was a word-for-word repeat of the original 1957 ceremony.

Working life kept Jim, Sally and their two sons, Jim Jr. and Robert, on the move. He was employed in the Consumer Electronics Industry for 40 years, serving in executive officer positions with several Harman International Industries companies (JBL, Tannoy Products Ltd. in the UK, BSW in Tennessee and Mark Levinson Audio Systems in Connecticut) and with Xantech Corporation in southern California.

Moving to Duncan, OK after retiring, Jim and Sally joined The First Presbyterian Church, where they both served as officers and where they participated in many volunteer activities. Sally was a regular in the church choir, an active participant in the affairs of The Women of The Church and editor of the church newsletter.

Jim taught Sunday School and acted as the unofficial graphic arts person and photographer of church activities. His efforts included the production of the 175-page church centennial celebration book and the rewrite and reissue of a book originally written decades ago, featuring the story of the church’s stained-glass windows. During a six-year period he contributed countless photos and stories to appear in the eight-page monthly church newsletter, Faith at Work. He especially enjoyed serving The Women of The Church, assisting in their activities.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Grant Barthell Sr. and Billie Long Mann; by a brother, Charles Grant Barthell Jr.; by a sister, Mary Charlotte Barthell; and by a grown son, Robert Gene Barthell.

He is survived by his wife, Marcella Mae (Sally) Kost Barthell of the home; by a son, James Forrest Barthell Jr. and his spouse, Connie Jean Barthell, of Flower Mound, TX; by his grandson, Chris Barthell of Flower Mound, TZ; by his granddaughter, Sarah Jean Coester of Mesa, AZ; by his granddaughter and her spouse, Laura Mae and Tanner Mahan of Highland Village, TX; by his grandsons, Taylor Forrest Barthell and Dylan Gene Barthell, both of East Hampton, CT; and by five great-grandchildren, Jaymie, Cadence, Ava Belle, Liam and Ronan.
