Segovia Andrew Bader, BHS 1970

Segovia Andrew Bader, BHS 1970

Steven Andrew Bader was born May 25, 1952. He grew up on Andover Dr. in Burbank, middle son of Dr. Stan Bader and Ruth Bader. He attended Thomas Jefferson, John Muir, and Burbank High graduating in 1970. He was a professional musician all of his adult life, and after becoming an adult he legally changed his first name to 'Segovia', after the famous Spanish guitarist, Andreas Segovia. He had played professionally with groups all over the world on musical tours for decades.
For many years his home base has been San Rafael, CA. Over the many years he had accumulated a solid 13 years of travelling to 101 different countries in all parts of the world. His last extended trip was a little over one year ago. Many of us have received his "travel logs" from him while he was on his trips over the years. He started out in the second grade and in Cub Scouts in 1959! Segovia Bader passed away June 2, 2010, just one week and two days after his birthday on May 25. He leaves an adult daughter and an adult son, his mother, Ruth, of Burbank, his older brother, Mitch, his younger brother, Kenny, and their families.
Segovia had a melanoma on his leg and had surgery about a year ago to remove it. His doctors thought at that time that "they got it all", but unfortunately that was not the case. Later the melanoma spread to his chest. Ultimately melanoma is what caused his death.

He did not tell many of us who had recently heard from him that he was so ill. Several of you wrote about how shocked you are, since you also had just heard from him in the last week or so. Segovia's family and friends had a huge birthday party for him on his birthday last week. Now so soon after that he is to be cremated and there will be a memorial service for him in the Burbank area, but plans have not been determined yet as to any details.
Steve left a letter for his brother to post on his Facebook page after his passing:
Here is a letter from Segovia to his friends...My name is Mitch Bader and Segovia was my brother. As you may or may not know, Segovia passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 2nd after losing his brave battle with cancer.
He asked that Kenny, our brother, and I send this to his friends after his death. For those of you who knew him well, you may find humor that even in death he's providing you with reading material.
My Dear Friends........... If you are receiving this letter than it looks like I have some very sad news for you. The letter is being sent out by my brother Mitch. That is because I am no longer with you on the earth to do the sending myself. Who would ever have thought that it would happen like this. Attacked by a tiger in Africa, killed by bandits in Central America, falling from a mountain top in Nepal. Ah, there were so many dramatic ways that I could have been taken from you. But alas, the reaper came from within rather than from without.
As many of you know I had a run in with a melanoma on my knee back in March of 2008. Well with some surgery we thought we had eradicated my body of the melanoma. But a follow-up chest x-ray 1 ½ years later showed different. There was something there. Well follow up CT scans, PET CT scans and a brain MRI revealed that I had cancer in my lungs and brain. By the time I found this out it was stage IV Metastatic Melanoma. It was a truly unpleasant prognosis with very slim chances for survival.
As I write this I am not sure if I ever decided to share what was going on with me with the world. I told my family and a few close friends so I had plenty of support. But I just didn’t want to be “that guy” who everyone felt bad about. Who people weren’t sure about what to say to or how to act around. That was never my style. And I was used to holding things inside because often times in my travels there wasn’t really anyone to open up to about things. The truth of the matter was that for the longest time I was totally asymptomatic and even felt great while on the chemotherapy.
I was very positive about the whole thing, as catastrophic as it was to my life, and so long as that was the case I wanted to remain my old positive jolly self in all that I did. I did not want to bring pain and sadness to the party!! I won’t go into the whole long story here about how it all went down because of course I kept a journal (a final Travel Log) throughout the whole experience and if you are receiving this then you are on the list to receive that as well. My brother should be sending it out soon.
One thing that is important for ALL of you to keep in mind is how lucky and blessed I have always been. Few have had a life quite like mine. Sure it was cut shorter than I would have liked but isn’t it about quality more than quantity? Rather than feel bad about it all, please rejoice in knowing that I lived more in my 57 years than most people could live in 10 lifetimes!! No, I wasn’t “ready”” to go but I am certainly in no position to complain.
How many people reach the end of their lives with an empty “Bucket List?! Of course there are a few things that I would like to have stuck around to enjoy like more time with my family and friends. But there are no, “If I’d only had the chance to do this or go there” to put on my list. Maybe I knew that this was all coming so I somehow sensed that I had better get out and do it all while I could? Whatever it was, I managed to have great fortune.
A successful musician, a worldtraveler, a Bohemian, a 48 year old retiree, a father of two incredible children. I always managed to live my life outside of the mainstream. It was something that I set out to do in high school and something that I certainly managed to accomplish.
One more wonderful thing is that I leave the world with no secrets and no unresolved turmoil between myself and any other. There is nothing that I wish that I had had the chance to patch up or say “I am sorry” about. I do want to say here though that my life was incredibly full and rich but that it was all of you who were the gold that sat in the pot at the end of my rainbow life.
One of my dying wishes is that you all rejoice in my life rather than mourn my passing. Thank you. I send my love eternal. Peace……….Segovia
…………I TRAVEL THEREFORE I AM………….
PS......If anyone needs to communicate with my brothers Kenny or Mitch, please use this email address: mitchbader@yahoo.com If you want to communicate with me, just look up at the moon. I plan on spending a lot of time there.

IN TUNE WITH WHAT MATTERED - PLAYING ORGAN, ENJOYING FAMILY WERE BURBANK MAN'S PASSIONS

Daily News of Los Angeles (CA) - Sunday, March 20, 2005
Author: Holly J. Andres Staff Writer

Keith Voy Baldwin Sr., BHS 1948

Playing an organ was the passion of Keith Baldwin Sr., a longtime Burbank resident who died March 13,2005. He was 75.

``He loved the organ but he was shy about performing. We had to twist his arm at our club meetings to play,'' said the Rev. Phil McKinnley, a friend from the Los Angeles Theater Organ Society. ``He was very musical. He was a wonderful guy and we'll really miss him.'' While most other society members perform traditional music, Baldwin took a delight in playing variations of ``Chopsticks'' - everything from jazz to acid rock - when he played for an audience.

``He was a smart, fun-loving guy. He was warm and friendly and always pushing the theater organ society,'' said son Keith Baldwin Jr. ``His passion was playing the organ but he enjoyed his kids and his granddaughter.'' A perfect day for Baldwin would have been driving to a dozen or so venues to listen to or play theater organs on the society's ``Wurlitzer Weekends,'' his son said.

Keith Voy Baldwin was born Jan. 21, 1930, in Marion, Ohio. He graduated in 1948 from Burbank High School and enlisted in the Air Force. He worked as a military air traffic controller and retired with the rank of major in 1971. Following his retirement Baldwin worked with his parents at Thirst Quencher Liquor in Burbank. The store was sold in 1977 after his father's death.

Baldwin is survived by his children, Keith Voy Baldwin Jr., Krista Vyanne Bowman and Kirby Villiers Baldwin ; and a granddaughter. A funeral service was held Thursday at Valley Funeral Home in Burbank. Baldwin was cremated and his ashes will be scattered.
Donations in his memory may be made to Sansum Diabetes Research Institute, 2219 Bath St., Santa Barbara CA 93105.

David (Dave) Lee Shurman, BHS 1980

David (Dave) Lee Shurman, BHS 1980

Former GCC football staff member dies

August 20, 2005 , Glendale News Press, Charles Rich

Dave Shurman, who recorded game film for the Glendale CommunityCollege football team for 11 years, died Wednesday at his Van Nuys home. He was 43.

Shurman had been suffering from a kidney ailment, family members said. Shurman, who graduated from Burbank High in 1980 before briefly attending Glendale College, filmed most of Glendale College's football contests from 1986 to 1997.

Born Aug. 16, 1962, in Los Angeles, Shurman managed the Burbank High baseball and boys' basketball teams from 1977-80. Shurman earned a spot on the Glendale College football program's staff, videotaping team practices and home and road contests. Under Glendale College football coaches Jim Sartoris and John Cicuto, Shurman's talents helped the coaching staff break down film in a timely fashion. "He was a true warrior who just amazed me," said Cicuto, who has coached the Vaquero program since 1989. "He's a special person in my life, and he overcame so much with a bad kidney and he did so in a valiant way.

"Dave never wanted anybody to feel sorry for him. "He had a tremendous amount of pride in his work for us." Cicuto said Shurman's work proved to be invaluable in allowing the Vaqueros to make the necessary adjustments for upcoming games. "His work was critical for us," Cicuto said. "He'd come in on a Sunday morning and view it, and then he'd ask my opinion on the filming.
"Another time, I was teaching a basketball class at night, and he came in and challenged the basketball players to a free-throw shooting contest. "I was just thinking about him because usually he would call me to get in to the college."

Peter Stone, Shurman's first cousin, said Shurman attended numerous sporting events around Los Angeles. Stone said Shurman attended many Los Angeles Dodgers games and enjoyed visiting Santa Anita Park in Arcadia. "He loved to go to the race track," said Stone, a Burbank resident. "He really loved basketball, and wasn't afraid of anything concerning his health."

Nicole Peterson, Shurman's younger sister, said Shurman was an ideal brother. "He was very witty," said Peterson, who played softball and basketball at Burbank High. "It was about what he could do for people. He went above and beyond the duties of a brother. "He had a lot of health problems and took it in stride, but he couldn't participate in any sports after his health had declined the past few years."

Survivors include his wife, Maribel Shurman of Van Nuys; his father, Clifford Shurman of Roseville; his mother, Barbara Bailey of Valencia; four sisters, Nicole Peterson of Stevenson Ranch, Carolyn Perez of Whittier and Sandy Villagran and Cheryl Owens of Sacramento; one brother, Chris Horn of Redmond, Ore.; four nieces and three nephews.

Peterson said public services for Shurman will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Pierce Brothers Valhalla Memorial Park, 10621 Victory Blvd., North Hollywood.

Diane Virginia Nelson Lange, BHS 1951

Diane Virginia Lange, 70, of Pine City, Minnesota, died peacefully at Kanabec Hospital in Mora on Tuesday, July 29, 2003. She was born in Hollywood, CA on May 17, 1933, the daughter of Fred and Ruth Nelson. She grew up in Los Angeles, Glendale and Burbank, CA. graduating from Burbank High School in 1951. She then went on to Bible school in Los Angeles for a year.

Diane met Delbert Lange at St. Matthews Church in 1951, when he was stationed with the Air Force at Cal Airo Tech in Glendale. They were married on June 12, 1953 and set up their home in rural Pine City.

Diane was a faithful and precious wife, always concerned for her family. She put them first. She loved the Lord Jesus Christ, whom she accepted as her personal Savior while at Bible camp. It showed in her raising of six children in a simple home.

Diane and Delbert read the Word of God together daily. She was quiet but friendly, a stalwart supporter and encourager to her pastor husband, children and grandchildren. She was always there to share others problems and help with a smile. Among the simple pleasures Diane enjoyed were reading books, working puzzles, watching game shows with her family and collecting refrigerator magnets. She liked to take care of her cats and enjoyed watching the flowers bloom in her gardens.

Visiting with her children and grandchildren was another favorite pursuit. Few visits ended without at least a game or two of Skip-Bo or tiles. Diane also loved to travel and look through all the pictures and videos she and Delbert accumulated during their many trips through the western states and Canada. She was able to celebrate her and Delbert's 50th wedding anniversary with all of her family at the North Shore in June and travel up to the Yukon this month to see her great granddaughter.

Diane was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Ruth Nelson, and her granddaughter, Becky Kappauf. She is survived by her husband, Delbert, Pine City; her sister, Barbara Toshach, Long Beach, CA: six children, Linda Andrews of Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada; Nancy and Scott Nichols, Fredonia, WI; Lisa Kappauf, Hinckley; Steven and Kim Lange, Pine City; Jeanine Macapageal, Coon Rapids; and Larry Lange, Hinckley; 17 grandchildren, Matthew and Elizabeth Freemantle, Darcie Andrews, Reggie Andrews, Nathan, Stacy and Steven Nichols, Michael, James and Alicia Kappauf, Stephanie, Jonathan, Christine, David, Katelyn and Joshua Lange, and Mark and Daniel Macapagel, one great granddaughter, Caroline Freemantle, and many brothers and sisters in Christ.

Funeral service was at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 1 at the Pine City Evangelical Free Church. Pastor Ken Dalbey officiated. Casketbearers were Mike Kappauf, James Kappauf, Jonathan Lange, Nathan Nichols, Steven Nichols and Scott Nichols.

Three more children made for a busy life of raising her children, volunteering at their schools and fitting in classes in many types of crafts, dancing and needlework that she so enjoyed.

Although a private person, she enjoyed the company of the many people she met in the neighborhood, her classes, Mothers of Twins Club and folk-dancing clubs. In 1986, she moved to Moorpark, where she decorated the home she loved so much and filled it with her beautiful needlework and crafts. She enjoyed reading mystery novels and was able to volunteer at Los Robles Hospital in the late '80s and much of the '90s.

With her symptoms under better control, she and her husband were able to do the traveling that they both loved. She continued her craft class at the Simi Senior Center until 2000 and enjoyed going to lunch with her friends from Spanish class until a year ago.

She will be missed by her husband of 46 years, Larry D. Hatch. He cherished her love, friendship and unfailing support. She is also survived by her two sons, Kirk and Derek Hatch, both of San Diego, Calif.; four daughters, Wendy Johnston and Erin Brown of Simi Valley, Jill Hatch of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Glynis Hatch of Camarillo; two sons-in-law, Robert Johnston and Steve Brown of Simi Valley; three granddaughters, Kelsey and Kailey Johnston and Jordyn Brown; and two grandsons, Cameron Johnston and Derek's son, Kier.

Funeral arrangements are private. Interment will be at Pierce Bros. Valley Oaks in Westlake Village.

Valdene Ruth Vanote, BHS 1948

San Diego Union-Tribune, The (CA) - Wednesday, September 26, 2007
Valdene 'Val' Vanote passed away peacefully on September 14, 2007, in the home of her long-time sweetheart, James McCamey. It was her faith in God and positive spirit that allowed her to remain with us until this time.
She was born on March 16, 1930, in Des Moines, Iowa. She graduated from Burbank High School and then married Bert A. Anderson, Jr. They eventually made San Diego their home. Being the wife of the minister of St. Andrew's by the Sea Episcopal Church in Pacific Beach, coupled with raising three sons, kept her quite busy. This was also the start of many life-long friendships.

Valdene continued her education by attending San Diego State and receiving her degree in the mid 1970s. She then started her 20-year career at Kaiser, working as a counselor. Many of her patients benefited from her special gift of being a good listener, and kept in touch even after her retirement. She will be remembered for her compassion, generosity and positive outlook on life. She truly was one in a million and lived life with gusto. She always made you feel unique and special. She will be missed.
Valdene is survived by her sons, Bert Axel Anderson III (Dianna), Michael Van Note Anderson (Tracy) and John Arthur Anderson, all of San Diego; her grandchildren, Autumn, Christian, Lauren, Todd, Alan and Sarah; her sisters Vonnie Van Note of Malibu, and Vanette Van Note of Sweden.

There will be a Memorial Mass at 10:00 AM on Saturday, September 29, 2007, at St. Mary Magdalene Church, 1945 Illion Street, San Diego, with a reception to follow. In a private ceremony, her ashes will be scattered at sea. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to your favorite charity. Please sign the guest book at obituaries.uniontrib.com
