2 area men die in crash

Santa Barbara, The bodies of two Los Angeles men have been recovered from the wreckage of their single-engine plane, which slammed into the side of a mountain 18 miles northwest of here, authorities said.

The pilot, Kirk S. Groves, 25, of Burbank, and passenger Edward E. Wekerle, 23, of North Hollywood, were enroute to San Francisco from Burbank when their Piper Cherokee smashed into the sheer rock face of a mountain in Los Padres National Forest, authorities said Wednesday.

Investigators were trying to determine why the plane hit the mountain, 1,000 feet below its peak, officials said.

Funeral services scheduled for Kirk Groves, 25
 
Kirk S. Groves, 25, died Tuesday, February 17, in Santa Barbara. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he was a Burbank resident for 25 years.
 
He was graduated from Burbank High School, was an ex-naval aerial photographer, and has been flying since age 16. He was currently writing a book on aviation and was a Vietnam War veteran.
 
He is survived by his parents, Dorothy and Leonard Groves and his sister, Janet, all of Burbank. Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Saturday, February 21, at Pierce Brothers Little Country Chapel in North Hollywood, Pierce Brothers Valhalla directors.

Garry Kar Johnson, 50, died on January 15, 1984 in Al Kahobar, Saudi Arabia. He was born in Burbank and had lived here all his life.

He is survived by his wife, Pojana of Bangkok, Thailand; a son, Scott Johnson; his mother, Grace Judd; and a brother, Ron Johnson. He was employed for six years by an international engineering firm.

Memorial services will be Saturday at the Burbank United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Bangkok, Thailand.

Mortimer Arthur Lawrence, BHS Teacher

BHS Students, Faculty Mourn Death of Teacher 

Faculty and student body members of Burbank High School were saddened today with the announcement of the death of Mortimer Lawrence, one of the school's most beloved teachers.

Mr. Lawrence, 35, succumbed in the Queen of Angels Hospital where he had been confined since the first week of December.

The deceased joined the staff of Burbank High School in September, 1950, as an English teacher. He was active in numerous school functions and was advisor for the annual yearbook. He was intensely interested in high school and youth activities.

Gerald Ogborn, principal of Burbank High School, said that "Mr. Lawrence was an excellent staff member and personal friend. He was loved by the entire school body and his passing has come as a shock to all of us."

Born in Chicago on April 7, 1918, the deceased attended school in that city before enlisting in the United States Marines in 1940. Following his discharged in November 1945, Lawrence resumed his studies, earning his Bachelor of Science Degree from Northern Illinois State Teachers College in 1947. He later attended Northwestern University prior to accepting a teaching position with the Escondido school system.

Mr. Mortimer is survived by his widow, Ada, and three small children, Nancy, Ricky and 9-months old baby, Carol Ann; and his parents who live in Chicago. The deceased resided with his family at 7735 Ostrom Ave., in Van Nuys.

The remains will be forwarded to Chicago for funeral services and burial.

Linda (Lyn) Schlottmann was born November 27, 1947 in Excelsior Springs, Missouri to Thomas Randolph McGinnis and Geneva (Page) McGinnis, and passed away at her Aloha, Oregon home on March 1, 2014 at the age of 66.

Lyn was preceded in death by her father and mother. She is survived by her sister Pat Melton and husband Jim of Kansas and brother Roy McGinnis and wife Peggy of California.

Her legacy continues on in her children:

Daughter Dawn and husband Larry Kagarice of Missouri, and son Craig and wife Darcey Schlottmann of North Plains, Oregon.

Also in her legacy are her two grandchildren, Tia and Zack, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations in her name be made to either the
American Cancer Society
or the Alzheimer's Association

Phebe E. Brown, 89, died February 23, 1989 in Burbank, California. Born in Los Angeles, she lived in Burbank 74 years. She was a 1918 graduate of Burbank High School.

Mrs. Brown is survived by her daughter, Marion Shelton, of Burbank; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Private graveside services were held at Grandview Memorial Park, Glendale, California. Scovern Mortuary in Glendale was in charge of arrangements. Donations may be made to the St. Joseph Medical Center Pavilion.

Steven Guy Cavoretto, 35, died July 30, 1989 in Burbank, California. Born in Glendale, he lived in Burbank twenty-five years. Cavoretto was an engineer with C.F. Braun in Alhambra. He was a graduate of Burbank High School and the University of Southern California where he received a bachelor of science degree in Chemical Engineering. He was a licensed engineer.

He was a member of Sigma Phi Delta, the Instrument Society of America and the USC Alumni Association.

Mr. Cavoretto is survived by his wife, Shan; a son, Christopher; daughter, Andrea; parents, Roy and Jeanne Cavoretto of Burbank; brother, Mark of Van Nuys; grandfather, Dominic Cavoretto of Acton, California. Arrangements were private.

Leona A. Favazzo, 32, died October 11, 1985 in Burbank, California. She was born in New York, but had lived in the Burbank area for 25 years. She had worked as a sales clerk for J.C. Penny Company.

She is survived by her husband, Bob; sons, Bobby, Jason and Michael; brother, Charles; and her parents, Charles and Doris Metz. Mass was held Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier Church. Burial was at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Hollywood Hills, California.

Jesse "Bill" Wynn

Allegany, NY Jesse "Bill" Wynn, 73, of 3974 Route 417 passed away Tuesday (December 13, 2016) in his home.

Born September 14, 1943 in Scottsburg, IN he was the son of Jesse W. and Juanita Nichols Wynn.

Bill was a 1961 graduate of Burbank, CA High School. He served with the California National Guard and then began working in the construction business in California. He resided in Christopher Creek, AZ for a short period of time and helped develop his father's property. After moving to Arizona he became the manager of drivers for SD Care Center and later NCS Health Care, both located in Phoenix. He has resided in Allegany since 2009.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting and he was an excellent golfer.

Surviving are 3 children Ronald W. (Rhonda) Wynn of Prescott, AZ, Jessica (Tom) Chiniewicz of Aurora, CO and Bradley Wynn of Allegany; 6 grandchildren Sarah and Tyler Chiniewicz, Joshua and Ryan Wynn, Jonathan Anderson and Christopher Montagno; 2 stepsons Daniel Gwizdalski, stationed in Davis Monthan AFB in Tucson, AZ and Jeremy Gwizdalski of Gilbert, AZ and 2 nephews Corey and Keaton Phillips.

A memorial gathering will take place at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Monday (December 19, 2016) from 6-7pm at which time a memorial service will be held.

Normi Johnson, 31, died Wednesday, July 20, 1977, in La Mirada, California. Born in Los Angeles, California, she was a former Burbank resident for eleven years. She was graduated from Burbank High School in 1963.

She is survived by her husband Richard L. Johnson; her father, Lee Gotch of Burbank; two daughters, Julie and Tasha Johnson, both of Saugus; her grandparents, Hugh and Garnet Gotch of Clearwater, Florida; her step-mother, Eline Gotch of Burbank; her step-grandmother, Nona Unruh of Burbank; two brothers, Michael Gotch of Sherman Oaks, California and Jeffrey Gotch of Burbank; two sisters, Fran Pynn of Burbank and Wendy Martyna of Palo Alto, California.

Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m., today, July 21, at the Eckerman - Heisman Funeral Service in Burbank. Graveside service will be 10 a.m., Friday, July 22, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Hollywood Hills, Eckerman-Heisman Funeral Service, Burbank directors.
