Paul Michael Murphy, BHS 1960

Paul Michael Murphy, BHS 1960

Auburn Journal, The (CA) - Sunday, July 16, 2017

Paul Michael Murphy, 75, passed away on Saturday, July 1, 2017 from a long battle with metastatic prostate cancer. Paul was born January 28, 1942 in Newburyport, Massachusetts, son of the late James and Sarah (Welch) Murphy.

Paul graduated from Burbank High School in 1960. He married his sweetheart Diane Guinaugh, on July 25, 1964 at St. Finbar Church in Burbank, Calif. They moved to Northern Calif. in 1969, and he launched Paul Murphy Distributing in 1972, selling auto parts to dedicated customers in territories ranging from Sacramento to Yuba City, Marysville, and Reno, Nev.

His family describes him as ever smiling. He had a silly sense of humor, a quiet joy, a genuine care for the great outdoors, and a loving and forgiving spirit. He built their Grass Valley home on five acres, creating beautiful grounds, vegetable, and flower gardens and orchards, sharing the bounty with family and community. He was a godly man, devoted to family, and enjoyed water and snow skiing, fishing, tennis and golf. Paul was a long-time member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and then St. Teresa of Avila in Auburn.

Many may remember his uncanny ability to turn any word or phrase into a song. It seems fitting that one of his favorite songs at the end of his life was "How Can I Keep From Singing?"

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Diane (Guinaugh) Murphy, three children: Greg, Sally and Katie, and four grandchildren: Carter, Brenna, Jake, and Tanner. He is further survived by his brother Jimmy, sisters Annie Aiton and Bette Hamer, brother Jack and sister-in-law Cindy (Gorman), brother-in-law John Guinaugh and sisters-in-law Nicki (Pepperell) and Carole (Roberts), as well as many beloved nephews and nieces, grand-nephews and grand-nieces.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at 11 a.m. at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church, 11600 Atwood Rd. Auburn, CA 95603 to honor Paul; reception immediately following. Wear bright colors, as Paul was a bright light to all who knew him.

A special thank you to all of Paul's family, friends and neighbors, for your beautiful prayers, encouragement, and love through this time. Thank you to Folsom Fire Department, Sutter Care at Home Hospice Roseville, and Paul's niece, Nancy Pailing, for your supportive care of Paul in his last days.

In lieu of gifts or flowers, please consider donating to your favorite charity, or Sutter Care at Home Hospice (Gift processing, P.O. Box 166045, Sacramento, CA 95833). As an alternative, plant a garden, sing songs, measure rainfall, make food from scratch and share with loved ones. In short, live simply and laugh often, in memory of Paul. Diane says, "I'll see you in my dreams... until we meet again!"

Alan Jay Mulder, BHS 1967

Worker killed while stopped on Reyes Adobe Road
By Sylvie Belmond, The Acorn Newspaper, June 2017

Alan Mulder, a 68-year-old landscape contractor and family patriarch, sustained fatal injuries Sat., June 10, 2017 when a passing car struck him while he was standing next to his work truck on Reyes Adobe Road in Agoura Hills.

Mulder was working on a landscaping job for the City of Agoura Hills along the north side of the road near Rainbow Crest when the accident occurred shortly before 1 p.m.
While his work truck and utility wagon were parked on the shoulder of the road, a car driven by a 74-year-old woman approached from behind.

“She apparently thought she had sufficient clearance to pass, but must have misjudged it so she hit the back of the utility trailer and sideswiped the vehicle until she reached the truck driver’s door where Mulder was standing and getting ready to enter his truck,” Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Detective David Huelsen said. Mulder was transported to Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center in Thousand Oaks where he died from his injuries.

The driver who hit Mulder stopped and cooperated with authorities. Her name was not released, and the cause of the accident is still under investigation, Huelsen said.

Mulder is survived by his wife, Margie, who is a retired teacher from the Las Virgenes Unified School District; two adult sons, Christopher and Michael, and their wives; and eight grandchildren.
He and his wife came to Agoura Hills more than 25 years ago.

“He was a faithful, dedicated, hard-working husband, father, grandfather, brother and son,” the Mulder family told The Acorn in a statement. He served as a deacon at Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sun Valley.

Mulder grew up in Burbank and earned a history degree from UCLA. He later became a licensed landscape contractor and arborist, and founded Agoura Hills-based Savanna Landscape Inc., which has provided lawn care and landscaping services to commercial and residential clients in Ventura and Los Angeles counties for the past 30 years.

Memorial donations may be made to the two charities he supported: World Vision and The Salvation Army.

Pamela Jeanne Herrick Neil, BHS 1965

Pamela Jeanne Herrick Neil
September 1947 – April 24, 2017

Our loving mother, grandmother and sister, Pam Neil passed away peacefully in Reno, Nevada on April 24, 2017, after a two year battle with cancer and now resides in her heavenly home. A born-again Christian, Pam attended the First Baptist Church, in Hawthorne. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

A fourth generation Californian and a native of Imperial County, Pam was the daughter of Claude Herrick and Patricia Arner. She grew up in El Centro and Burbank, California, graduating from Burbank High School in 1965, later taking courses in early childhood development at Los Angeles Valley College, in the San Fernando Valley.

She was married in March 1969 to Mike Neil. In February 1970 they welcomed daughter Lori into the family. Five years later, to the day of Lori’s birth, Pam and Mike became the parents to their youngest son, Chuck. For the next few years, Pam spent her time raising the children, and helping to care for her niece. With two active children, Pam was kept busy taxiing her daughter and son to their various sports and school endeavors, including soccer and softball. In ferrying around many of their friends who had working parents, she became a second mom to many of the teammates.

The Neil family moved to San Diego in 1979 and remained there as Lori and Chuck grew up. During that time Pam started a small home-based distribution and sales company specializing in t-shirt advertising. From 1983 to 1996, Pam and Mike began a successful small business, San Diego CNC, a machine tools sales and service company. In 1996 the firm was incorporated as Neil Enterprises, Inc. Pam served as the office manager and accountant for the company.

The Neil’s resided in Rancho Penasquitos from 1979 to 1994, when Pam and Mike became involved in the breeding and showing of American Eskimo dogs and became significantly active in the dog world. From 1989 to 1995, Pam was instrumental in establishing the local chapter of the American Eskimo Dog Club of San Diego County. Pam, Mike and many other “Eskie” lovers and breeders helped this breed to be recognized and accepted by the American Kennel Club.

Moving to north Escondido, Mike and Pam Neil actively assisted others in training their dogs and Pam started puppy socialization classes. They were also members of the Hidden Valley Obedience Club of North San Diego County from 1990 to 2002, during which time Pam served as treasurer of the Escondido Humane Society and facilitated the expansion of the society’s facilities and helping to build the first ever dog park in the City of Escondido.

Mike passed suddenly in 2002 and the business was closed. Together with her sister Sue Silver, from 2003 to 2006 Pam attended to their father in his decline with Alzheimer’s disease before moving with Sue to Hawthorne in June 2006.

In Hawthorne Pam became active as a volunteer with and a member of the board of directors of the Ray of Hope Humane Society. In 2008 and 2009, Pam devoted many hours to the fight to fend off a wilderness land proposal and supported the efforts of the Coalition for Public Access (CPA). She became active in the Mineral County Republican County Committee, serving for a time as the committee’s treasurer.

Pam’s battle with cancer was both inspiring and heartbreaking. Her diagnosis was made nearly two years after a local radiology report had recommended a CT scan follow-up, but of which she was not advised. Because her symptoms were missed, one of Pam’s last sentiments and advice to others was that they should always seek a second opinion and take responsibility for your own health needs.

Pam is survived by her children: Lori Neil and Chuck Neil; Chuck’s fiancĂ©, Holley Watkins; three grandchildren: Harrison Sedin, William White Neil and Dylan Neil; her sister: Sue Silver; niece: Chris (Eileen) Stanwick and cousins: Barbara (Greg) Beedon, Chuck (Sabra) Cobleigh and Nancy (Jim) Jacobs.

Services will be held on Saturday, May 6 at 11 a.m., at the First Baptist Church, corner of 8th and C streets, Hawthorne. Friends and acquaintances are invited to attend. A meal will follow courtesy of the church’s congregation.

Michael "Mike" Cobb, BHS 1983

Channel Islands Sales Manager/All-Around Great Guy Loses Battle to Cancer

The surf world has lost another one of the good guys. Sadly, after a long, hard-fought battle against pancreatic cancer, Santa Barbara’s Mike Cobb has passed away. Remembered for his compassion, integrity and love of life, his place in the lineup will be greatly missed. He was only 51 years old.

The Sales Manager for Channel Islands Surfboards, Cobb was one of the lucky ones that found a way to blend a fulfilling career with his love for surfing.

“Mike was the man,” said Conner Coffin, who spent years with Cobb at Channel Islands. “He was one of those guys that always made sure the people around him were taken care of. He was just one of the nicest guys. It’s so heartbreaking; he had such a positive energy and he did so much good for other people.”

A regular in the water around Ventura and Santa Barbara, Cobb also made routine sojourns to Tavarua over the years, typically staying on the island during Dave Lester’s week in May.

“I was lucky enough to spend quite a few weeks with Mike on Tavarua over the years,” remembers Lester. “We became good friends. Mike was a great guy who took the time to get to know people. He really cared a lot about the Fijians on Tavarua. I spoke with Mike a few days before our trip this past May, unfortunately Mike could not join us this year, but he really wanted to come, not for the surf, but to see all of his Fijian friends. He loved the place and the people. That is just the way Mike was. Always a kind word for everyone. I am really going to miss him.”

As far as what kind of guy Cobb was, a telling post was made on his Facebook page shortly after his passing.

“He came up to me during a little surf trip on Tavarua in 2012 and said, ‘There is an unridden brand new Al Merrick 6’10” in my boardbag, I want you to go grab it, wax and ride it and have some fun at Cloudbreak,’ after he found out I didn't bring a shortboard and just two longboards on the trip,” writes Kieran Plim. “Who does that? Mick does. What also struck me most was that he had the time to chat and drink beer like a person I had known for 20 years, not to mention bringing out his secret collection of tequila as well one night. I know you are getting seriously barreled right now in the afterlife.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with Mike’s family and friends. Godspeed.

NURSE FINDS PARALYZED WOMAN DEAD IN BATH

A 36-year-old Burbank woman, left paralyzed on one side of her body by an operation for a brain tumor about 15 years ago, drowned Monday, October 10, 1983, while taking a therapeutic bath at her home, police said.

The woman, identified as Nan D. Gold, was found unconscious by a day nurse who returned to the house in the 700 block of Uclan Drive shortly after 1 p.m. according to Sgt. Harry Griffin.

Griffin said the nurse, unsuccessful in her attempt to revive Gold through mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, notified paramedics who in turn called the police.

Bill Gold, a deputy medical examiner for the Los Angeles County Coroner's office, said an autopsy on Tuesday revealed Gold drowned possibly as the result of a seizure. Further tests will be conducted on the body, he added.

Gene L. Rader, BHS 1945

Gene L. Rader of Azalea, Oregon, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at the age of 89. Gene was born in Fairbury, Nebraska, in October of 1927.

At age three, Gene’s family moved to Burbank, California, during the Great Depression. He graduated from Burbank High School and became a Carpenter, then served in the Navy and was a veteran of WWII on the battleship New Jersey. He worked his way up from a Carpenter to General Superintendent of Construction with Zapata Diversified Builders and then Regional Manager of Construction in the Western States for Hospital Building & Equipment Co., where he retired in 1990. He was known for building everything from homes, apartment complexes, large commercial and government buildings, schools, libraries, and hospitals. He designed and built the home of his dreams on Upper Cow Creek in Azalea, Oregon, amid the Douglas fir trees, ferns and wildflowers, where he spent his retirement with family and friends.

Gene loved being on the water, boating and waterskiing, but his passion was fishing! He owned many boats in his lifetime and loved to take family and friends skiing and deep-sea fishing. His interests were hunting, fishing, waterskiing, golf, hot cars, baseball, football, his flowers, and dogs.

He was preceded in death by his ex-wives, Mary Bishop Rader and Doris Rader, as well as the love of his life, Jean Dahlin; his parents, Andrew and Ruth Irene Rader; sister, Marjorie Rader Seagraves; brother, Richard “Dick” Rader; niece, Sherre Seagraves; as well as all but one of his lifetime friends.

At his request, there was no funeral or memorial service. A private Military Honors Ceremony was held at Mountain View Memorial Chapel for the immediate family on Wednesday, June 21, 2017, to honor his Naval service to our country and his ashes were scattered by the family on “his mountain”.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The Wounded Warriors Foundation, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, or the charity of your choice.

Sharon Lynne Jones, 80, returned to the arms of her Heavenly Father on May 14, 2017. Sharon's strength allowed her to live a productive life filled with service to family, neighbors and church.

She was born on September 29, 1936, in Sterling, Ill., to Elwood and LaVerne Bushman. Sharon was raised in Illinois, but the family relocated to California during her high school years, where she graduated from Burbank High School. Soon after graduation, she married William Christy and they settled in Manhattan Beach, where they raised five children.

Sharon always had a strong feeling for religion and visited and studied nearly every kind of Christian church, and when missionaries knocked on her door, they answered many of her questions. She knew it was true and became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1968 Sharon and William divorced, and Sharon moved her family to Lancaster.

In 1975 Sharon met and married Fred Kellerman, and a son was added to the family. They were later divorced. Sharon worked for Boeing at Edwards Air Force Base and in 1989, moved to Tehachapi, and after being single for 15 years, she married Larry Jones in 1991, where they resided together for the past 25 years. Sharon had a variety of hobbies and talents she used to serve those around her. She loved to read, sew, do beautiful cross-stitching, bake, and research her family’s genealogy.
She served in many church callings and was an aide and volunteer at the Hospital Guild for many years. When her health required her to start "taking it easy," Larry and Sharon decided they would go on their own adventures on their motorcycle, or in their truck and camper.

Sharon is survived by her sister, Gloria Evans; son, David (Melanie) Christy; daughter, Cheryl Hunter; daughter, Janet Christy; and daughter, Diana (Jonathan) Silva; 18 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren.
