Michael Howard Lewis, BHS 1967

Michael Howard Lewis, BHS 1967

Aug. 15, 1949 - Sep. 15, 2015

Michael Howard Lewis, son of Howard and Hazel Lewis, husband, father, brother, uncle, and constant helping hand, is loved as acutely as he is missed. Always eager to help others, Michael sought out and valued close-knit communities wherever he was. From Guam to Oklahoma, Michael enjoyed being a part of something larger than himself. He made friends everywhere he went, with his offbeat sense of humor and appreciation for the kindness of others.

Michael loved flying, sailing, travelling, eating good food, listening to live music, playing with kids and dogs -- but above all, he loved his family and friends. Michael spoke fondly of his childhood in Burbank, CA. It was there that he found his passion for flying, which eventually led him to Continental Airlines and Guam. Michael loved the community and looseness of island life and spent his free time on the beach and sailing.

After his contract in Guam Operations was up, Michael transferred to Hawaii, where he got to know Kathie. Just a week after they started dating, Michael began applying for jobs that would take him to the mainland, where Kathie lived. Ten days after he got a job in Los Angeles, Michael and Kathie were married. The next 34 years would see Michael in three different states -- Oklahoma, California, and finally, Nevada. In each state he found lifelong friends, whether it was in his neighborhood in Broken Arrow, Thursday breakfasts at Nini’s in Burlingame, or at LifePoint Church in Minden, where he loved working Guest Central and being in fellowship with his small group.

He also treasured the community at Century 21 Clark Properties, where he was a realtor for the past nine years. Michael was known for his good attitude, his example of perseverance, and his will to live. He was baptized in Lake Tahoe and had a quiet and steady faith. He loved seeing the colors change in the Genoa wetlands and watching the sunsets and sunrises. He will be remembered for having a spirit even more full than he would pack the dishwasher.

Michael continues to live in the hearts of his wife, Kathie, his daughter, Erin, his son-in-law, Chris, and the rest of the Lewis, Hughes, Carpenter, and Churchill families. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 17, 2016, at LifePoint Church, 1095 Stephanie Way, Minden. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Carson Tahoe Health Foundation for either the sponsor of a stay at the Merriner Cottages or their Cancer Resource Center -- both in support of the comfort and care of cancer patients.

Donald (Don) Lee Rand, BHS 1962

Donald (Don) Lee Rand, BHS 1962

Don Rand, 71, passed away on March 12 , 2016 at home in Waldoboro, Maine where he was residing at the time. Don was born August 14, 1944 in Glendale, California to Elmer F. Rand and Gwendolyn Y. Dunn. Don grew up in California and  graduated from Burbank high in 1962 where he was on the Ceralbus Yearbook Staff where he and another fellow student did all the artwork for the yearbook.
Don was predeceased by his father and brother Gary Rand. Don is survivied by his mother Gwendolyn Rand of Cooper Mills, one Aunt, one nephew and many close friends. No services will be held at this time.
In his BHS Reunion profile page he wrote the falling:

After graduation from BHS he attended the Chouinard Art Institute graduating in 1966 and majored in film animation. Chouinard merged with the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music in his last year and the new school name is one that most of you know, California Institute of the Arts (Cal Arts), now in Valencia, California.

After Chouinard he worked for a while at a little independent film studio over in Hollywood known as Graphic Films. They did a lot of films for the goveerment, including one of the moon landing. He was eventually laid off for several months and Don went back to making  some money restoring and selling player pianos, a hobby with him since he was a kid.
Funny how life can be!!!!  In 1968 a friend of mine and I opened a mechanical music store on Broardway in Glendale, California. We sold player pianos, nickelodeons and all the old Edison and Victor phonographs, plus the memorabilia that went with them. We had a great time and met many interesting people including President Nixon.

In 1976 Ed and I purchased the carousel in Griffith Park from the Davis family who placed it in the park in 1935. We made a lot of improvements and it was a great business for us but after ten years of a grinding, grueling schedule we had to bow out and sell it.

In 1986 I moved to Maine and Ed , my partner in the music business moved to New Hampshire, so we still keep in touch and we both love New England!!!

For the past twenty years my business has been manufacturing music rolls for all the collectors over the U.S., who own nickelodeons, which by the way were Americia 's first Juke Boxes and both J.P. Seeburg and Rudolph Wurlitzer got started this way.

Occasionaily I have down some art work since living in Maine, including work for the Merle Norman Museum out in Sylmar, California. So when people ask about my art career I usually state that both art and music have been in my life for a long time, long time and have enjoyed my involvement in each!!!

Ruth Ann Bolen Estoup, BHS 1970

Ruth Ann Bolen Estoup
 June 27, 1952 ~ January 17, 2016

Ruth passed away on Sunday, January 17,2016 in Oregon. She had won a battle with breast cancer 18 years ago, but just two months ago in November she was diagnosed with the same form of cancer, but this time it had already metastasized to her spine and stomach. I had a number of e-mails back and forth with her in December regarding the upcoming BHS reunion of her older brother, but I had no idea about her current illness. Joyce Starleaf received a Christmas card from Ruth last month, but no mention about her being seriously ill. On Sunday Ruth's life-long close friend, Jennie Burke Schneider, phoned Joyce to let her know the very sad news of Ruth's passing.

Ruth Ann Bolen grew up at 825 Bethany Rd. in Burbank. She attended Emerson Elementary, John Muir, and BHS with all of us. While in school in Burbank she was a member of the Burbank Y Girl's Club, The Thoactleans, along with several that remained her closest friends throughout life. In the early 1970's Ruth moved to Oregon, which is where she has lived since, and where she passed away. She had lived with her family in Milton Freewater, Oregon for many, many years until now. Ruth worked in the banking industry for many years, and had retired within the past couple of years. The last BHS '70 Reunion that Ruth attended was our 2010 Reunion, which happened to be held on her birthday, June 27, 2010. She and her husband were on a trip to Europe this past June at the time of our 2015 class reunion.

Ruth is survived by her husband, Tom Estoup, her son Matthew Estoup (age 39), and her daughter Rebecca Estoup (age 36). She is also survived by her sister, Barbara (BHS '69) of Southern California, and her brother, Dennis (BHS '66) of Florida.

Lynn Diana Koethe Cole, BHS 1959

Lynn Diana Cole, creative, artist, professional marketer and merry-maker, died peacefully Nov. 24, 2015, in Hot Springs after a lengthy battle with dementia. She was 74. Born in Long Beach, Calif., Lynn was the eldest of two daughters of William Oscar Sylvanis Koethe and Mildred Lorraine, descendants of 18th century German artist and philosopher, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

In the 60s, Lynn worked at Whittaker Corporation, where she met and married Dr. Leland G. Cole, a former JPL executive, who helped develop rocket fuel for the inaugural mission to the moon. Lynn and Lee were married 11 years, had two children and enjoyed entertaining in their home on the water in Huntington Harbor, Calif. After the divorce, Lynn moved to Santa Ana, worked for Jack LaLanne European Health Spa, became the lead singer of a folk band and volunteered for then Governor Ronald Reagan.

Lynn can best be described as "larger than life." Her beauty and smile were matched by an uncommon zest for life. She loved to travel and engage in all things artistic. An avid painter, Lynn created over 60 works of art, often gifting portraits to friends and family, including one to Lawrence Welk, who once asked Lynn to join his television show as a singer.

In 1977, Lynn became a Christian and began working for Calvary Chapel Church of Costa Mesa, Calif., where she soon met and married an associate pastor. This union resulted in a move across country to open a Bible bookstore in Amity. The marriage was brief, and Lynn and her children then settled in Hot Springs. Lynn worked 20 years in the hospitality industry including manager of the Music Hall, a theater-in-the-round, booking musical acts like Conway Twitty and Crystal Gayle.

Her favorite job was public relations and marketing manager for the Arlington Hotel. For more than a decade, Lynn orchestrated elaborate parties, events and hosted VIPs including The Clintons, Barbara Bush, Jimmy Carter, Lawrence Welk performers, Miss Americas and Miss Arkansas. Lynn was proud to show visitors around Hot Springs, always believing in the town's potential to become world renown for the arts, abundant natural resources and healing environment.
Her civic and community involvements included Chamber of Commerce Red Coat Ambassador; guest speaker, White House/Governor's Conference on Families; founding President, Hot Springs/Diamond Lakes Film & Video Commission; founding committee member, Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival, now in its 25th year; founding member, Hot Springs Opera Guild; board member, Downtown Merchants Association; Main Street USA Steering Committee to "Adopt a Bath House;" chairman, Greater Hot Springs Remembers; co-chairman, Taste of Hot Springs; H.S. Business & Professional Women; and she spear-headed the "Scenic Gateway" steering committee, which resulted in the state highway department revamping and beautifying the highway interchanges.

Later in life, Lynn earned a double associate's degree from National Park College and co-founded a summer art program called "Youth Arts," aimed at building confidence and social skills for underprivileged children. Lynn was an active member of two churches during her time in Hot springs, Grace Bible Fellowship Church and Lake Valley Church.

Lynn is survived by daughter, Lisa, and husband, Mark, of Los Angeles; son, Lance, and wife, Pam, of Hot Springs; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21, in the Anthony Chapel at Garvan Woodland Gardens in Hot Springs with a Christmas cookie reception after the service. Lynn was interred Monday, Dec. 7, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Hollywood Hills, Calif.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Arkansas Alzheimer's Association, The Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival, Arkansas Hospice, Guardian Angels Cat Shelter of Hot Springs, Gene Cunningham's Bible Ministries of Hot Springs.
