Douglas Warren Boes
January 27, 1949 - October 18, 2018

Douglas Boes passed away after a short struggle with cancer at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center at the age of 69.

Doug was born in Burbank to Warren and Caroline Boes and lived in the area all his life. He graduated from Burbank High School and attended Valley College. He had his own mechanics business and also worked in the motion picture industry.

Doug was the great-grandson of David Buick and was interested in classic cars. He attended car shows locally and across the United States in his own classic Buick. He also built and raced his 1968 Dodge Charger for twenty years as a member of the Southern California Timing Association (SCAT). He was an avid reader of science fiction and history.

Doug made many friends over the years and is greatly missed by his special friend, Ruth.

Melvin Short, BHS 1939

Melvin Short, 83, died Feb. 23, 2004. He was born Jan. 24, 1921. He was the beloved husband of 62 years to Mary. Preceded in death by son Ronald Short. Survived by daughter, Melary Short, grandson Kenneth Short, granddaughter, Deeann Fackrell and families.

Born in Burbank, he moved to Placerville in 1956 at which time he became employed by Aerojet. He retired from Aerojet in 1984.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association.

A memorial will be held at the Federated Church in Placerville on March 1, at 1 p.m. to honor Melvin.

We are so very saddened to report that we lost another classmate, Walter Ames BHS 1964. Walter was active in everything at Burbank High. He was voted Best All Around Guy in our Senior Class. He was our Student Body President, Class President and Yell Leader. He was involved in Swim Team, Key Club, Boys State and just about anything else you could name.

Walter and his wife had 6 children. He spent his life serving his Church and so many others. After graduating from Brigham Young University (BYU) with a B.S. in Anthropology and Asian Studies, Walter L. Ames earned a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.

He has taught at various periods for BYU, and currently served as an adjunct faculty member at both BYU and Utah Valley University.

He has also served as a managing director at Russell Reynolds Associates, a partner at Ray & Berndtson, a vice president at A. T. Kearney Executive Search (which acquired Ray & Berndtson), and a partner at Edward W. Kelley & Partners (which acquired A. T. Kearney Executive Search), and was a partner with Heidrick & Struggles.

He is the author of, among other things, Police and Community in Japan (Berkeley and Los Angeles: University of California Press, 1981), and a contributor to, among other things, Japanese Law in Context: Readings in Society, the Economy, and Politics (Cambridge: Harvard University Asia Center, 2001).

Here is what one of his children wrote about him:

"The world lost a bright light today and heaven got a new one. My dad, Walter Ames,

passed away tonight June 22, 2020 at home surrounded by family who loved him. He made so many peoples’ lives better with his own. He taught us the value of hard work, the importance of education, the powerful impact of selfless service to others, and how to respect and love people in all cultures and from every corner of the world. Rest In Peace, dad. I can hear you playing bluegrass in heaven.

We are so thankful we were able to see him again at our 50th Class Reunion, six years ago. Bon Voyage, Walt...You will certainly be missed...

John (Jack) Bruce Kile, BHS 1979

A friend posted last April on Facebook about John's passing. 

John Kile passed away on Thursday April 16, 2020 after a long hard fought battle with cancer. According to remembrances left by friends, he was kind and funny and had a great laugh and smile. One friend said he worked with John on a Hot Shot fire crew and John was very knowledgeable of California wildfires and plants. John loved food and music and worked in the music industry. No other details at this time.

Craig had been living in the Lancaster, California area until his passing. He was one of four siblings, with older brothers, Dave and Steve, and younger sister, Shawna. Craig attended John Muir for 9th grade, and graduated from there with many of us in 1967. He graduated from Burbank High School with us on June 18, 1970. No other information is known.

Born December 14, 1940, Glendale, California, he died on April 13, 2020 in Burbank, California.

The son of Mitchell Truesdale and Emmy Louise Storms Truesdale of Los Angeles. His sister, Kathleen Louise Truesdale Jones passed away on May 5, 2007. Patrick is survived by his other sister, Nancy Truesdale Berkey.

Pat, attended Burbank High School, Burbank, Los Angeles County and graduated in the Class of 1959.

He and Beverly J. Gibson, were married on June 26, 1976 in Inglewood, California. They moved to Burbank where they enjoyed a full life. Pat was a loving and caring husband, supporting Beverly as she volunteered at the Southern California Genealogy Society in Burbank. Pat is survived by his wife, Beverly, of 43 years.

He worked for Skytronics Aircraft, in El Segundo, California on alternators for small planes and helicopters, until his retirement in 2006. In retirement Pat made use of the extra time by pursuing his hobby of old cars, specifically a 1932 Ford and by traveling. He and Beverly traveled as often as possible throughout the United States.

Pat is lovingly laid to rest on April 30, 2020, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Hollywood Hills, California.

Carol Marie Johnson Oliver, BHS 1966

Carol Oliver, 56, of Grayson, lost her vigilant battle to kidney cancer on Saturday, August 28th, 2004. An open memorial will be held on Friday, September 3rd, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. at the Grayson United Methodist Church; reception to immediately follow memorial service. 

Carol Marie Johnson was born on June 25, 1948 in Glendale, Ca. She attended grade school, K-8th Grade in Burbank, and then attended Burbank High. Carol graduated high school in 1966, and nursing school in 1968 and relocated to the city of Los Angeles. Carol lived in Burbank, California from 1948 to 1969. From 1969 to 1975, she resided in the Los Angeles area. The next 23 years, Carol lived in Alpine, Ca. from 1975 until 1993 when she would move to Georgia. 

During her time in San Diego, Carol attended the University of Phoenix to obtain her bachelors in science degree. In no time at all, Carol was accepted into Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Within three years, Carol had earned her Masters degree. After graduating from Emory, Carol came back to Alpine in 1997 and got her first job as a Nurse Practitioner at Sharps Memorial. 

Carol's passions were horses and photography. Although Carol truly enjoyed San Diego, she maintained her deep love for the south. As time went on, Carol's desire to return to Georgia became a reality. In 1998, she met the man of her dreams, Tom Oliver, and began her life with him in a special place called Grayson, Georgia. She practiced medicine at Emory Eastside Medical Center in Snellville, GA until the time of her illness. 

Carol Oliver was survived by; husband, Thomas Oliver, mother, Violet Johnson, sister, Sharon Averett, 9 beautiful children and 7 grandchildren. In lieu of flowers make donations to Grayson United Methodist Church or Embracing Hospice Care, in memory of Carol M. Oliver. May she rest in peace.

Former Santa Clarita Man Of The Year Richard Keysor Dies

Richard “Dick” Keysor, a local business leader, philanthropist, and 1989 Santa Clarita Man of the Year, passed away peacefully at his Santa Clarita home at the age of 91 Wednesday, May 20, 2020.

Dick was born in Salt Lake City, Utah and was 16 when his family moved to Burbank, CA where his father, James “Bud” Keysor, started his own recording vinyl manufacturing business, later known as Keysor-Century Corporation.

Dick started working in the family business as a teenager and graduated from Burbank High School. Afterward, at age 19 he served for 2 years as a young church missionary in Hawaii and always had a soft spot for the people and culture of Polynesia. He attended college at UCLA and the University of Utah and received his B.S. in Business Management.

In 1954, he met the love of his life and married Arlene Meyer of Smithfield Utah, and shortly thereafter served his country as a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force during the Korean War at McChord Field in Tacoma, Washington where his first two children were born.

After being released from the Air Force in 1956, he returned to the San Fernando Valley. In 1957, he helped arrange the move of Keysor-Century Corporation from the San Fernando Valley to Saugus. Eight years later in 1965, Dick moved his family, now three girls and two boys, to the Santa Clarita Valley. He worked in various executive capacities such as President and CEO with Keysor-Century Corporation until it closed in 2002.

Endless community service and philanthropy were his proud contributions to Santa Clarita. He was a founding Member of the Board of Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital. He also served as Foundation Chairman of the hospital for 2 years, fund raising and initiating a program that financed and developed an adult day health care center at the hospital.

Dick also served as Area Chairman of the United Way Santa Clarita campaign, was Hart District Chairman of the Boy Scouts of America, Board member of the Michael Hoefflin Foundation, and served as a Trustee for 12 years on the Sulphur Springs School District board.

Always persevering and volunteering, Dick was a long-time member of the board of the SCV Boys & Girls Club where he served as President of the Board and in 1979 was Chairman of the Boys & Girls Club Auction, where he set fund-raising records.

Dick has been an owner and investor in many companies, including his children’s entrepreneurial ventures, and has served on many boards. He was a Founding Director of Valencia National Bank which was eventually acquired by Union Bank.

Dick and his wife Arlene were recipients of the Sulphur Springs School District PTA Founders’ Award. In 1987, he was nominated for the Southern California National “Philanthropist of the Year” award for having donated more than 25,000 hours of community service.

Always a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Dick served as a Bishop twice. He continually served the Lord in many church capacities his entire life including Sunday School Teacher, Area Youth Leader, and High Councilman, and led many service projects. He had a beautiful tenor voice and sang in the church choir with Arlene as the organist. He had a natural gift for art and loved sports.

When his youngest daughter was on the track program at Canyon High School, Dick qualified himself in track technique and volunteered as an assistant track coach. He became a “father figure” to many of the students and encouraged them to achieve their goals, resulting in their setting some school records. Undaunted by age or health challenges, he even attended his family’s athletic, church and academic events until earlier this year.

Dick and Arlene just celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on May 5, and are the parents of nine children, Stephen, Claudia, Kari, Jenny, David, Lisa, Colleen, Stacy and Christine. All of the children attended Sulphur Springs Elementary School, and

Canyon High School, and all are graduates of Brigham Young University. Dick and Arlene have 33 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. His parents James and Bernice Keysor (deceased), brothers Jim (deceased) and Robert have been residents of Santa Clarita Valley, and his sisters, Carolyn Hill and Kathy Kellar, still reside in SCV.

Dick was loved by his family, friends, church, and community and this compassionate man will be greatly missed. Private graveside services will be held at Eternal Valley Mortuary on May 30, 2020.

Virginia L. Gibbons, 45, of East Hampton, Connecticut, formerly of Carlsbad, California. Wife of Don E. Gibbons, died Saturday, April 27, 1996 at Hartford Hospital, Hartford, Connecticut. MRS. ULLOM'S FATHER TAKEN BY DEATH

Charles Carrigan, retired high school teacher and father of Mrs. Chester Ullom of 162 Sunset place, died yesterday at his home, 22 E. Alhambra road, Alhambra. At the time of his retirement he was a member of Mark Keppel High school faculty in Alhambra and had been a teacher there for 17 years. Mr. Carrigan was a former president of the Southern California Teachers association.

Surviving Mr. Carrigan are his widow, Mrs. Jennie B. Carrigan; five daughters, Mrs. Ullom of Monrovia, Mrs. Rodney Morin of Washington, D.C., Mrs. Dean Brackenbury of Monterey Park, Mrs. Albert Gloeckeer of Alhambra and Fern Carrigan, a WAVE stationed at Santa Ana.
