Manuela Nellie Torres, BHS 1985

Authorities Say Body Is That of Bride to Be
September 01, 1993

TIMOTHY WILLIAMS | TIMES STAFF WRITER

SUNLAND — The body of a woman found shot and wrapped in plastic sheets in the Angeles National Forest was identified Tuesday as a 26-year-old Pacoima woman who disappeared after meeting with her fiance and the minister who was to marry them, authorities said.

Manuela Nellie Torres was last seen alive Aug. 19 in a Montrose church, where she and her fiancee met with Isaiah Yoo, the pastor of a congregation that rents space at the First Baptist Church in Montrose, authorities said.

That evening, Yoo had talked with the couple about decorations, food and entertainment for the wedding ceremony that was scheduled to be held at the church Saturday, Yoo said. Afterward, Yoo's wife joined the three in a prayer asking for a successful marriage, Yoo said. "They seemed very happy together," Yoo said.

After the meeting, which ended about 7:45 p.m., Torres and her fiancee, whom authorities have not identified, left in separate vehicles, said Benita Hinojos of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The following morning, Torres' fiancee filed a missing persons report with the San Fernando Police Department, Hinojos said.

Forest rangers found Torres' decomposing body Aug. 25 near mile marker 6.44 near Big Tujunga Canyon Road. On Monday, Glendale police found Torres' 1989 Mazda pickup truck in Glendale, Hinojos said. Homicide investigators have no suspects in the case.

Torres, who worked as a mail carrier, had taken Bible study classes and attended Woo's church for about three years. "We are really shocked," Yoo said of the 25-member congregation. "There is no reason for this kind of thing to happen. Everybody liked her."

Jack Richard Arringdale, BHS 1967

It is with a heavy heart to announce the passing of one of my classmates.

Jack Richard Arringdale was born on August 30, 1948 in Los Angeles County, California to George Richard and Lorena Mae Sweeney Arringdale. Jack graduated from Burbank High with the Class of 1967.

After high school Jack served in the United States Navy serving in Vietnam where he attained the rank of GMC3. On February 6, 1971 in Los Angeles County Jack married his fellow classmate Theresa Joann Hunter. The marriage must of ended in divorced as Jack married second to Wendy Lou Saxon on June 17, 1986 in Clark County, Nevada and his first wife marries Joseph Vincent Cotton in 1993. His first wife Theresa Hunter Cotton  passed away in 2016. I created a Find A Grave Memorial for her and the other day I received an edit for me to link her to her first husband Jack Richard Arringdale and that is when I learned that Jack had passed away 8 years ago on February 25, 2010 in Springfield, Missouri. I did not know they had married each other until then.

That was the first I learned of his death. Jack was buried in the Springfield National Cemetery in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri. He had been living in Missouri at the time of his death.

James Edward Milz, BHS 1978

James Edward Milz, BHS 1978

On March 22, 2016,  Jim Milz went to take a nap, resting for an upcoming surgery. He didn't wake up. Jim passed in his sleep that day.

Jim is beloved by his family and friends who know him and will remember him as, among many other things, loving, caring, fun-loving, funny, and mischievous.

Jim treated everyone as family. He was always available to help. He demonstrated a "you-first" attitude. Always asking about you, making sure you were alright, before he took care of himself. A loving family man, always so proud of his kids and grandkids.

Jim was a sweet person, a trusted friend, without an ounce of malice in his heart.

Jim was always up for fun, ready to go on little or no notice.

We will miss him dearly. God's speed, and rest in peace our son, our brother, our father, our grandfather, our friend, Jim Milz.

In addition, the family has opened a gofundme account to help his children pay for funeral expenses. Please consider helping by making a donation. Thank you very much.

Gloria Jean McClatchie Mather, BHS 1964

Gloria was born in Burbank, California to Mae McClatchie and Frank McClatchie. She was the oldest of 4 children.

Gloria graduated from Burbank High School in 1964, where she had many friends.

In 1966 she had son, Mike McClatchie. In 1971 she married Lynn Wilcoxson and had 2 children. Lynn worked for Lockheed where Gloria also began working; taking jobs from the ground up, eventually getting to work on the Lockheed F-117 and U2 programs.

For many years Gloria was a group home parent. In the beginning she fostered runaway teens, however later on she took in children with disabilities. With her own 3 children along with the foster children and a full time job, it was a busy time. Unfortunately, the marriage with Lynn ended in 1980.

In 1981 Paul Mather married Gloria. Paul worked for Boeing. His job would take them to England where they lived for a short time. They moved to Kent in 1993 where Gloria opened “P and G Creations” in Auburn. Gloria always had a very creative mind, and looked for ways to express it.

For the past 2 years Gloria had been battling lung cancer. Prior to the cancer diagnosis there were other health issues that caused her to become physically weak. She was a strong woman who battled things head on. In the neighborhood where she lived, she was a good neighbor. If anyone ever needed anything, she was one who could be counted on if she was feeling well enough. She will greatly be missed and her friends will always have “remember when” stories to share about her.

Gloria was preceded in death by her father, Frank McClatchie, and is survived by her mother, Mae McClatchie; her sisters, Donna Taggart and Nancy McClatchie and Rick, her significant other; and her brother, Don and his wife, Ellen McClatchie. Her surviving children are, son, Michael and his wife Lety McClatchie; daughter Amy and Brian Hawker; son, Robert Wilcoxson; and her two granddaughters, Cloe and Samantha Hawker.
