William Barton Edwards, BHS 1941

William Barton Edwards, BHS 1941 Daily Breeze (Torrance, CA) - Saturday, November 17, 2012 William Barton Edwards, age 89, passed away on Wednesday, November 7, 2012. He was born on July 27, 1923 in Aitkin, Minnesota to Myrtle Swanson and Henry Edwards. After graduating from Burbank High School, he enlisted in the U.S Army Air Corps in 1941, becoming a decorated WWII Veteran, in the Glider Detachment. After his Tour of Duty in 1945, He attended the University of Southern California and obtained his chemical engineering degree and started his own successful manufacturing company, Luseaux Laboratories in Gardena, California. In 1957 he married Wilma Annie Brown. Together they raised two sons and two daughters in Torrance, California. Wilma passed away in 1981 and in 1987 Bill married Eleanor Louise Swanson. Bill was an active member of the First Lutheran Church in Torrance for over 50 years. He loved camping, fishing, and hunting, watching USC play football, and just being with his family and friends. He is survived by his beloved wife 25 years, Eleanor; his children, Tim, Alicia, Melissa and Billy; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, Eleanor's children and grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, November 24th at 11 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church, 2900 West Carson Street in Torrance. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Bill's name to the First Lutheran Church.

Susan L. Rosenthal Werner, BHS 1963

Susan L. Rosenthal Werner, BHS 1963 Susan L. Werner passed away on January 18, 2012 in Burbank, California. Susan was born January 16, 1946 to Sylvia and Harry Rosenthal and was a lifelong Burbank resident. As a teacher for thirty-five years at the LAUSD, her most memorable experiences were at Herrick Elementary School. Susan will be remembered as a strong, loving, considerate, and generous woman who loved her family unconditionally. Susan is survived by her children Daniel and Laura Werner; her grandchildren Mark and Sam Werner; Flora (her future daughter-in-law); and her former husband and friend Charles Werner. Her memories will be held close in the hearts of all of her family and friends. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 22, 2012 at Mount Sinai Memorial Park, Hollywood Hills, California. Debra Ann Milligan, BHS 1973 Burbank Daily Review, Tuesday, May 16, 1978 Debra Ann Milligan, 23, a Burbank resident, died Friday, May 9, 1978, in Burbank. She was born in Alaska. She was a hairdresser at Claudene's in Burbank. She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Ann Harding of Hawaii; grandmother, Mrs. Irene Noda of Washington; daughter, Nona Mauren Milligan; three brothers, Joe of Alaska, Michael of Alaska and Tom of Hawaii; two sisters, Nona Ann of Nevada and Maureen of New York. Private graveside services was Monday, May 15, Ferrara Memorial Chapel in charge of arrangements.

Man Held in 2 Hit-Run Deaths

A Burbank man was held in connection with the deaths of two women who were struck by a hit-and-run driver. Police said Debi Ann Milligan, 23, and Mary Ann Sergiadis, 27, both of Burbank, were struck as they stood beside Mrs. Sergiadis' car, parked on Magnolia Blvd. near Moss Street. The driver sped away , but several witnesses described him and took the license number of his car, found parked in a lot two blocks away. Both women were pronounced dead at the scene. Burbank police subsequently arrested Gerald Rene Perron, 45, at his home in Burbank. He was held on suspicion of felony manslaughter and hit-and-run driving.

MAN HELD IN HIT-RUN DEATHS JUST LEFT JAIL

A Burbank man accused of killing two women in a hit-and-run auto accident had been released from jail just eight hours before the accident occurred, after serving 146 days for driving while intoxicated, police said Wednesday.

George Rene Perron, 45, will be formally charged today in the deaths of Debi Ann Milligan, 23, and Mary Ann Sergiadis, 27, who were killed Tuesday morning on Magnolia Blvd. in Burbank.

Police said they will seek charges of felony ht-and-run driving, vehicular homicide and using false information to obtain a driver's license.

A check of police and jail records Wednesday revealed that Perron had been charged with drunk driving seven times since 1972.

He was arrested December 19, 1977, and found guilty on two counts of driving while intoxicated. Perron was sentenced to a total of 188 days, but got 42 days off for good behavior. Perron was released from County Jail Tuesday at 2 a.m. He got no sleep that morning, Perron told investigating officers. Instead, he visited a girlfriend and then an early opening bar.

Perron left the bar about 9 a.m., officers said. The accident occurred about90 minutes later.

Gloria June Kreutzberg Kelly, BHS 1944

Gloria June Kreutzberg Kelly, BHS 1944 Ventura County Star (CA) - Sunday, October 13, 2013 Born:1926 - Died:2013 Gloria June Kelly passed away peacefully at the age of 87 on October 9, 2013 in Ventura, California. Born on March 12, 1926, in Los Angeles to parents Richard and Dorothy Kreutzberg, with sister Beverly. Gloria graduated from Burbank High School in 1944. She married Edward Paul Kelly on March 14, 1953. Gloria and Ed lived in their home in Glendale for more than 50 years where they raised their four children, Richard, Ellis, John, and Nancy. Gloria enjoyed traveling, home decorating, crafts, and bible study, but more than anything she loved to spend time visiting and laughing with her family and friends. Gloria is survived by her two children, John Kelly and wife Marianne Lannen, Nancy Caldwell and husband Curt Caldwell, and her sister, Beverly Strohmeier. Gloria is blessed to have six grandchildren, Justin, Tonya and husband Billy, Danae, Cole, Cassidy and husband Nick, and Samantha. She also has two great-grandchildren, Camden and Hendrix. She is greatly missed by those who knew and loved her. During the last years of her life, Gloria suffered from Alzheimer's disease. Donald Melton, BHS 1965

Donald Melton, BHS 1965 Donald Melton passed away today at 7:30 pm after suffering a stroke on January 28th, 2014. According to Don's daughter, Wendy, the stroke had left him with severe brain damage and there was little hope of any recovery. Donald Melton was the Captain of the BHS football team, and while playing football also played the roll of Alfred P. Doolittle in the BHS production of " My Fair Lady". He was an actor, a mailman, a football hero, a clown, and could have been one of The Three Stooges. He was a father who taught his daughter how to survive and never give up. We loved him, he was the patriarch of his family, taking care of his family when things looked a bit sour. A Memorial service for Don Melton is going to be held at: VFW#2323 17522 Chatsworth St. Granada Hills, Ca. 91344 Services to begin at 2pm on Sunday the 16th of February, 2104. It's a pretty big place, room for aprox. 250 people. And knowing the many people that Don knew there may be just that many, and all are welcome. Refreshments ( We're thinking Santoro's ) will be served and booze will be available for purchase for those wishing to partake.

Lilyan Der Garbedian Chooljian, Former BHS Teacher

Lilyan Der Garbedian Chooljian, Former BHS Teacher Lilyan was born in Fresno on October 24, 1929, to loving parents, Dikran and Vasil Der Garabedian who were survivors of the Armenian Genocide from Van, Armenia. She was raised on the family farm on First and Sierra with her two older sisters, Seda and Rubye. She attended Wolters Elementary in Fresno and graduated from Clovis High School in the Class of 1947. She briefly attended Fresno State College and later moved to San Diego with her mother and step-father where she attended San Diego State. She was a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority, and graduated with a BA Degree in Education. Later she received a Master of Science Degree in Education at the University of Southern California. Settling in the Los Angeles area, Lilyan taught typing and business at Burbank High School for 17 years, where her adoring students referred to her as Miss G. Lilyan loved to travel, having the luxury of being a single high school teacher and traveled the world on her summer vacations. In 1972 she was introduced by family and friends to Kenneth Chooljian, who had recently been widowed. They were married later that year and she returned to her roots in Fresno and became a wife and mother to Kenneth's two daughters, Kathy and Janice. Kenneth and Lilyan were married for 35 years until Kenneth's passing in 2008. Lilyan was very active in many organizations such as the Ladies Aid at Holy Trinity Church, the General Society of Vasbouragan, the Sunnyside Garden Club, and acted as the editor of the Varak magazine. She was very proud of her Armenian and Vanetzi heritage and devoted much of her time to the church. She was an avid sports fan and especially loved the Fresno State Bulldogs and 49ers. She passed away on January 8, 2014 in Fresno. With her effervescent smile and twinkling eyes Lilyan was loved by many and will be missed by all. Lilyan was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Chooljian; parents, Dikran and Vasil Der Garabedian; step-father, Nishan Nalbandian; and her sisters, Seda Barnes and Rubye Manoogian. She is survived by her two daughters, Kathy Merlo and her husband Mike and grandson Preston, and Janice Helman and her husband Don and grandsons Alex and Austin; her nephews, Dick Manoogian and Harry Manoogian; her niece, Arlyne Sahatdjian and their families; and nephews, Dr. John Garry, Jim Garry and Gerald Chooljian and their families. The family would like to thank everyone for their support and give special thanks to Dr. Steven Chooljian and her loving and devoted caregivers, Pula Gayer and Meseret Tefera. Viewing will be held at Yost & Webb, on Sunday January 12, 2014, 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at Holy Trinity Armenian Apostolic Church on Monday, January 13, 2014, at 11:00 a.m., followed by interment at Ararat Cemetery. Dean Smith, BHS 1963

Dean Smith, BHS 1963 Very sad to report to you that Dean Smith (BHS Class of 63) passed away at home on November 26, 2013 on Cornell Drive in Burbank...He had recently been hospitalized at St. Jo's and was released last Thursday...He had Hospice in place at his home. Rees Smith, (who informed us of Dean's passing) had visited him last Thursday, just before his discharge from St. Jo's...They had a great dialogue and conversation...Rees said despite his weight lose, Dean looked good... He leaves his sister (Peggy Smith Thomas) ...He was born in April of 1945 and was a member of the 82nd Airborne...Dean was also an Engineer... Rees said that Dean told him he really WANTED to attend his classes' 50th Reunion in September...But his health did not permit him doing so... At this point in time, there are no known Memorial arrangemnts.

Jack E. Schicketanz, BHS 1945

Jack E. Schicketanz, BHS 1945 Former BHS Teacher Received this from Alan Landros and Joyce Starleaf An e-mail came this morning from Jay Schicketanz saying his father, former BHS science teacher, Jack Schicketanz, passed away a week ago, on Saturday, February 1, 2014. For the last few years Mr. Schicketanz had endured progressive decline involving his speech and memory problems. He had been living in an assisted living residence in Newport Beach. His wife passed away several years ago. He was 87, possibly 88 now. Jack Schicketanz taught at John Muir while many of us attended there from 1964 to 1967. In 1968 he moved to BHS and was there our junior and senior years. He taught Life Science and Biology for 25 years at BHS until his retirement in 1993. He was also an alumni of Burbank High School, in the Class of 1945. Mr. Schicketanz was one of the nineteen former BHS teachers who joined us at our 40th class reunion at the Castaway on June 27, 2010. His son, Jay, brought him from Orange County to be with us that evening.

Pamela Sue Bornemann Brown, BHS 1965

Pam Bornemann Brown, BHS 1965 Pamela Sue Bornemann Brown, passed away in her sleep last night Jan 25, 2014 . Pam had been through some medical treatment for cancer, but most recently, had been ill with complications from (we believe) the flu. She was hospitalized in ICU for several days and released. She is survived by her husband Bill, her daughter Sheri. If you would like to send condolences, Bill's address is PO Box 639, Dayton, NV 89403.
