David E. Ruch, BHS 1951

David E. Ruch, BHS 1951

1934 – 2024

Santa Barbara Independent, Monday,  Jan 06, 2025

David Ruch was born on January 18, 1934 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He died peacefully in Santa Barbara, California, surrounded by his daughter, and so much love from the caregivers and Hospice nurse at Heritage House.

He was born in Philadelphia and came with his parents and their next-door neighbors to Burbank California when he was 12. He attended Burbank high school where he lettered in tennis. He graduated from UCLA for his undergraduate. And then USC  for his post graduate work.

He went to work for AC electronics in LA where he met the love of his life, Elaine . He was quickly transferred to Delco in Goleta where they bought an unfinished home in the foothills and proceeded to make it theirs.

His mind was brilliant, but his woodworking skills were just as brilliant. He completed the home and then added a pool. Where his kids and all the neighborhood kids froliced for hours on end. He was first of all extremely brilliant, he was steadfast, he was gentle, and he was generous oh so generous. He helped so many people over his life.. He was a man of very few words, but his action spoke volumes. He will be missed by so many.

He is survived by his daughter, Robin and his son David, four grandchildren, and one great grandson, he adored them all.  He was a very simple man. He gave to many charities, if you feel so inclined, you can make a donation in his name to any charity of your choice or to Cycling without Age. Which gave him hours and hours of pleasure in the last three years of his life. He would like that.

Rest in peace Papa, your work here is done, and you lived such a beautiful and gentle life. Mom is waiting for you with open arms as always. You will be missed, oh so missed. But your love will continue on. You are never going to be forgotten.

A graveside service will be held Friday January 17, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Goleta Cemetery, 44 South San Antonio Road, Santa Barbara, CA 93111, lunch will follow.

Mario Trotta, BHS 1951

Mario Trotta, BHS 1951

March 11, 1933 - July 14, 2024

Mario Trotta was born in Dearborn, Michigan on March 11, 1933 to Antonio & Concetta Trotta .

He is survived by his wife Lana and  five children, Rick Trotta (Kerry), John Trotta (Yvonne), Dorene (Trotta) Finch (Lonny), Gary Trotta (Sharon) & Steve Trotta (Kate) who he had with his first wife Jackie. He also had 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Mario lived in Dearborn, Michigan until 1947. He eventually helped in the family market until the family moved to Burbank, CA. He graduated Burbank High School in 1951 and then shortly thereafter enlisted in the U.S. Navy. During that time, he married Jacquoline Cook. After Boot Camp he attended Aviation Structural Mechanic "A" school. After completing "A" school he spent time training in Texas and Oklahoma. After his training was complete, he was stationed at Atsugi Naval Air Station, Japan for the duration of his enlistment. Jackie and son Rick joined him in Japan and his second son John was "made in Japan". After his discharge from the Navy, he had a few different jobs...a milkman for a short time, then found work at Weber Aircraft and Zero Manufacturing. In the early to mid-sixties, he moved into construction as a carpenter setting patio doors. He stayed in construction as a contractor until the mid-nineties. In 1978 he fell in love with Lana Thornton, and they were married in September of that year. She brought him much joy and happiness for the next 46 years.

He spent his retirement time going to estate and garage sales. Some of his grandchildren have fun memories of going to sales with him. He went from buying and refurbishing old sewing machines and pump organs to clocks. Clocks became his passion/obsession. He could work miracles with clocks in dire need of part replacement. He often said there was a story for every clock that he owned. He made several long-time good friends during his estate sale visits, often times trading treasures they had found. He also restored a 1946 Chevy Pick-up from the ground up to factory original. There wasn't much that he couldn't fix, repair or refurbish.  Mario loved his family and loved bragging about their successes in life. He could tell you in detail, even at 91, memories of his own childhood while growing up in Dearborn and Burbank. He loved to reminisce about the family market in Dearborn.

We will always carry his memory in our hearts.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

In lieu of flowers for our Dad we are asking that a donation be made to The Wounded Warrior Project.

Click on the below link and it will take you to his memorial page there. Thank you for your donations to this worthy cause.

Dr. Wesley Neal Manor, BHS 1951

Dr. Wesley Neal Manor, BHS 1951

Dr. Wesley Neal Manor, 67, who had a practice in Anacortes at one time, died suddenly early Saturday morning, June 9, in Oak Harbor. He was a resident of Oak Harbor.

Dr. Manor was born Aug. 16, 1933, to Mildred and Wesley Manor in Lancaster, Calif. As a child, he had a love for music and was an accomplished pianist.

Dr. Manor served four years in  U.S. Army intelligence in the early 1950s. Deciding on a career in medicine instead of music, Dr. Manor graduated from the California College of Medicine, now the University of California at Irvine, in 1964.

In 1965, he moved with his family to Coupeville and opened one of the first family practices on Whidbey Island. This was a happy period in Dr. Manor's life because making house calls still was a common occurrence and payment for his services often took the form of produce or other barter.

During this time, Dr. Manor also was instrumental in Whidbey General Hospital's inception and development. In 1971, he returned to school at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Ore., and completed his ear, nose and throat specialty residency.

In 1975, Dr. Manor and his younger brother "Dr. Norm" opened two ear, nose and throat clinics, one in Mount Vernon and the other in Anacortes. The brothers practiced together until 1980, when "Dr. Neal" returned to Coupeville to practice -- a town that he loved.

Dr. Manor also served as director of the Island County Health Department for several years, while running his busy practice. In addition, he traveled to Ketchikan, Alaska, several times a year to provide needed ENT medical services to patients in that remote area.

Dr. Manor is survived by his beloved wife, Rhonda, in Oak Harbor; three children from his first marriage to Jeannette Beatty of Anacortes -- daughter Janell and her husband Colin Key of Scotland, son Darrin and his wife Karey Manor of Bainbridge Island and daughter Tonja and her husband Jason Dunton of Anacortes; two stepsons from his marriage to Rhonda -- Joshua and his wife Rachael Lancaster of Oak Harbor and Lee Lancaster of North Carolina. He also is survived by his brother, Norman Manor, M.D., of Miles City, Mont. and by eight grandchildren, Lauren and Ellen Key, Sarah and Jordan Manor, Alex, Megan and Taylor Dunton and Jacob Lancaster.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to The Neal Manor Fund, c/o Whidbey Island Hospital Foundation, POB 400, Coupeville, Wash., 98239.

Memorial services for Dr. Manor are 1 p.m. Friday, June 15, 2001, at Burley Funeral Chapel in Oak Harbor

Arrangements were under the direction of Burley Funeral Chapel.

"Joint Services Slated for Jeep Crash Victims"

Joint funeral services for two Burbank High School seniors killed in a jeep accident Monday will be conducted Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, members of the youths' families announced yesterday.

Robert Sidney Tinker Jr., 17, of 714 E. Palm Ave., and Larry W. Hughes, 18, of 703 E. Harvard Road, both of Burbank, were found dead Tuesday morning January 22, 1951 beside a demolished jeep on a fire road in the Burbank Hills.

Their companion, Kenneth Lee Harrison, 17, of 925 E. Olive Ave., Burbank, was found unconscious nearby and was still in critical condition yesterday at St. Joseph Hospital with head injuries.

Police reported the boys apparently went riding in the hills Monday night. While attempting to negotiate a narrow fire road they lost control of the jeep and hurtled to a dirt road about 90 feet down a cliff.

The three youths were to graduate with their senior class at the Burbank High School commencement tonight. Principal Gerald Ogborn said the diplomas of the two dead youths will be awarded posthumously during the exercises. Ogborn said that members of the class had voted to cancel the traditional senior candlelight supper scheduled for yesterday in memory of the two youths.

The Tinker boy leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Tinker, and a sister, Mrs. Margaret Pagones, of Burbank.

The Hughes boy leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Hughes, and two brothers, Lt. C. Lee Healy with the Air Forces in Japan and Robert Hughes of Laguna Beach.

Diane Virginia Nelson Lange, BHS 1951

Diane Virginia Nelson Lange, BHS 1951

Diane Virginia Lange, 70, of Pine City, Minnesota, died peacefully at Kanabec Hospital in Mora on Tuesday, July 29, 2003. She was born in Hollywood, CA on May 17, 1933, the daughter of Fred and Ruth Nelson. She grew up in Los Angeles, Glendale and Burbank, CA. graduating from Burbank High School in 1951. She then went on to Bible school in Los Angeles for a year.

Diane met Delbert Lange at St. Matthews Church in 1951, when he was stationed with the Air Force at Cal Airo Tech in Glendale. They were married on June 12, 1953 and set up their home in rural Pine City.

Diane was a faithful and precious wife, always concerned for her family. She put them first. She loved the Lord Jesus Christ, whom she accepted as her personal Savior while at Bible camp. It showed in her raising of six children in a simple home.

Diane and Delbert read the Word of God together daily. She was quiet but friendly, a stalwart supporter and encourager to her pastor husband, children and grandchildren. She was always there to share others problems and help with a smile. Among the simple pleasures Diane enjoyed were reading books, working puzzles, watching game shows with her family and collecting refrigerator magnets. She liked to take care of her cats and enjoyed watching the flowers bloom in her gardens.

Visiting with her children and grandchildren was another favorite pursuit. Few visits ended without at least a game or two of Skip-Bo or tiles. Diane also loved to travel and look through all the pictures and videos she and Delbert accumulated during their many trips through the western states and Canada. She was able to celebrate her and Delbert's 50th wedding anniversary with all of her family at the North Shore in June and travel up to the Yukon this month to see her great granddaughter.

Diane was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Ruth Nelson, and her granddaughter, Becky Kappauf. She is survived by her husband, Delbert, Pine City; her sister, Barbara Toshach, Long Beach, CA: six children, Linda Andrews of Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada; Nancy and Scott Nichols, Fredonia, WI; Lisa Kappauf, Hinckley; Steven and Kim Lange, Pine City; Jeanine Macapageal, Coon Rapids; and Larry Lange, Hinckley; 17 grandchildren, Matthew and Elizabeth Freemantle, Darcie Andrews, Reggie Andrews, Nathan, Stacy and Steven Nichols, Michael, James and Alicia Kappauf, Stephanie, Jonathan, Christine, David, Katelyn and Joshua Lange, and Mark and Daniel Macapagel, one great granddaughter, Caroline Freemantle, and many brothers and sisters in Christ.

Funeral service was at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 1 at the Pine City Evangelical Free Church. Pastor Ken Dalbey officiated. Casketbearers were Mike Kappauf, James Kappauf, Jonathan Lange, Nathan Nichols, Steven Nichols and Scott Nichols.

Burial was at Hustletown Cemetery in rural Pine City.
