George Thomas Van Hoye, BHS 1964

George Thomas Van Hoye, BHS 1964

September 14, 1945 – May 24, 2015

In The Care of Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives

George Thomas Van Hoye, 69, of Medford, Oregon, passed away May 24, 2015 at Providence Medford Medical Center. He was born in Alderson, West Virginia to Charles and Azelda (Burns) Van Hoye.

Dad served in the U.S Marine Corp and fought in Vietnam. After the service he began his love for riding motorcycles and loved the ape hanger Harley Davidson. He loved riding and spending time outside while camping, fishing or going on walks, especially in the desert. He collected coins and enjoyed working out, but the thing that really meant a lot to him was rebuilding his 51’ Chevy pick up truck.

He fell in love with Kimberly Grinstead and became a father of two. He was a proud dad that always showed his kids the correct way of doing things and taught them manners and to treat people with respect. He worked hard in life to support his family no matter what he had to do. Family meant the world to him, he taught us, that without family you have nobody. Dad also loved animals, at times it seemed as if he could talk to them. He had a good heart and would do anything for anyone who needed him.

George is survived by a son Daniel (Somer) Van Hoye, their children Kryztian Van Hoye, Nevaeh Van Hoye and Rayven Boatwright. Daughter Tasey Graves and children Kyle Graves, Kira Graves, Michael Glockling and

Anna Glockling. He is also survived by his girlfriend Cindy McJunkin, a sister Wanda Morris, and a brother Will Van Hoye.

A committal service will be held Friday June 12, 2015 at 3:00 PM at Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Kathryn Ann Burlan Bacon, BHS 1964

Kathryn Ann Burlan Bacon, BHS 1964

Kathryn (Burlan) Bacon (BHS Class of 1964) passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 24, 2026, just three short weeks after the passing of her beloved husband, David Bacon. Kathy was 79 years old.

Kathy was born in Los Angeles and her family moved to Burbank in 1953. She attended Monterey Avenue Elementary, Luther Burbank Jr. High and Burbank High School. Following graduation from BHS in 1964, she attended LA Valley College and worked for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. She later worked at the Marine Corps Base at Camp Pendleton, and served as a Public Information Officer for the U.S. Forest Service.

In 1967, while skiing at Big Bear, Kathy met the love of her life, Dave Bacon and together they built a life rooted in love, faith, and family. They welcomed three cherished children and, over the years, the family lived in Arizona, New Mexico, New Hampshire, Nevada and in both Northern and Southern California.

Kathy and her family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Their family’s faith was a source of great strength and gratitude – and provided many opportunities to be of service to others.

Kathy enjoyed reading, sewing, playing the piano, walking for exercise, church service, researching family history, and caring deeply for animals of all kinds. She also enjoyed learning Spanish and writing. Above all, she loved her family.

Kathy is survived by three children, nine grandchildren and two great grand-children. She will always be loved and remembered by her sisters who also attended BHS: Jane (Burlan) Cooper (BHS ’66) who is married to BHS ’65 grad Ron Cooper, and Nancy (Burlan) Fogel, class of ’75.

NOTE: From Kathy's sister original email:

It is very sad for me to be sending you the brief obituary of my older sister, Kathy (Burlan) Bacon who graduated from Burbank High in 1964. Especially so because she and her husband had just returned from a month-long European cruise with seemingly both in good health in early December when my brother-in-law Dave experienced some significant back pain which was diagnosed as stage 4 lung cancer just 4 weeks after their vacation. Then, tragically, my sister Kathy who had no known health issues died in her sleep only 3 weeks after losing her husband.

As you can imagine, this has been a very sad time for all of our extended family and friends.

I am sending you this obituary for the BHS Memorial page and I’m including two photos of my sister Kathy who was also my best friend. Thank you so much for saying the words below with the Burbank High School Community.

Sincerely,

Jane (Burlan( Cooper (class of ’66)

William Bruce Allan, BHS 1964

William "Bill" Bruce Allan, BHS 1964

May 20, 1946 ~ November 7, 2024 (age 78)

William Bruce Allan of Dike Texas passed away peacefully at home on November 7, 2024, surrounded by his family and his beloved rescue dog Laydeigh.

Bill is survived by his daughters, Susan Allan Croft and husband Thomas of Springtown, Sharon Allan Mayo of Ft Worth, and his son Travis Allan of Denton. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Cody and wife Haley, Carson Croft, Cooper Croft, Austin Allan, Kaci Allan, and Jordan Mayo; nieces Miera Nagy and Emily Adams; nephews, John Stone and Andy Stone

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Florence Allan of Burbank California, his son Trevor Allan of Sulphur Springs, his sister Betty Stone of Booneville, Arkansas, niece Jenni Stone Murillo, and his old roping horse Zip.

Bill was born in Montreal, Canada in 1946. He spent his early years in Canada but moved to California during his teen years where he graduated from Burbank High School and Cal Poly Technic State University. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in 1965 and was honorably discharged in 1967 following a motorcycle accident.

Among his first of many careers, he was a dairy farmer and Ag teacher in Newport, Vermont. After moving to Texas in 1974, he continued in the dairy business and began a career in Farm and Ranch Real Estate. He sold the dairy in the mid 90's and entered the realm of law enforcement as member of the Hopkins County Sheriff's posse, later entering the police academy and becoming a sheriff's deputy. He later took on the role of Hopkins County Constable and enjoyed eight years of service, making many friends (and a few enemies) along the way. His final career choice landed him as the court Bailiff for Hopkins County. He retired (officially) in 2020, but still enjoyed filling in at the court when needed.

Never one to meet a stranger, Bill enjoyed his church families at St James Catholic Church for many years and in recent years at Sulphur Spring First Baptist. He spent time singing and playing the guitar in each choir and kept his fellow Sunday School members laughing and smiling with his quick wit and silly jokes.

Bill loved to travel and see new things. He especially enjoyed his annual beach trips with his children and grandchildren where they spent every day on the beach and every evening as a family, watching movies or playing games on the deck. He had traveled to every state in America, with the exception of Alaska. Road trips with the grandkids were another of his favorite ways to see the sights and he spent many hours allowing them to choose the routes and the sights to see.

He will be remembered as a loving and proud father, grandfather, and a friend to everyone he met. He lived his motto of "be kind to people and they'll be kind to you."

Michael Abram Nugent, BHS 1964

Michael Abram Nugent, BHS 1964

September 6, 1946 — June 13, 2025

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Michael Abram Nugent, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, educator, coach, referee, mentor, friend, and dedicated sports enthusiast, on June 13, 2025, at the age of 78. He leaves behind a legacy rooted in learning, influence, discipline, teamwork, guidance, fairness, support and an unwavering passion for sports.

He was born on September 6, 1946, in Paterson, New Jersey, Mike dedicated his life to his passion for learning and teaching. As a proud “Bulldog” by way of graduating from Burbank High (1964) and the University of Redlands (1969), he found his true calling as a teacher and “Bulldog” at Bowman High School. There he took immense pleasure in shaping young minds, fostering critical thinking and supporting teens on their journey to adulthood. While receiving the Teacher of the Year award from the Hart District in 2003 was a point of pride, it was surpassed by the profound satisfaction of seeing his Bowman students graduate and successfully transition into adulthood, many of whom he maintained contact with for years.

Outside of academia, Mike's greatest enjoyment stemmed from his lifelong involvement in sports as a player, coach, referee, and all-around supporter. He was a highly respected basketball referee for four decades and an acclaimed coach, allowing him to instill principles of fair play, discipline and teamwork in generations of athletes. In recent years, he took immense pride and delight in cheering on his grandson Robert across various sports, including football, basketball, baseball, soccer and track.

Mike was a natural mentor who found great satisfaction in guiding, coaching, advising and supporting others. He seamlessly combined his pedagogical wisdom with the values of sportsmanship; using this unique approach to help others navigate challenges and discover their full potential, both in and out of the classroom and on and off the court.

In 2019, The Santa Clarita Signal published an article, “The Man Behind the Whistle”, capturing the essence of Mike Nugent.

Mike is survived by his loving children, Vivian Forr, Tami Nugent, Leigh Bissell and Ryk Comerford; his cherished grandchildren, Robert Nugent, Kierstin Wilcox and Easen Bissell; his adored great-grandchildren, Carson and Emerie Wilcox; his admired brother Bob Nugent; beloved nephew Robert Nugent, dear niece Nicole Nugent and his treasured (former) wife of 41 years Judi Nugent. He also leaves behind a vast network of former students, colleagues, friends and sports fanatics whose lives were profoundly impacted by his passion and spirit.

A Celebration of Life will be held on August 10, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Burbank VFW 1006 W. Magnolia Blvd., Burbank California. Guests are encouraged to wear sports-themed attire, with Lakers, Dodgers, USC, UCLA or Rams gear being a favored choice.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Bowman Scholarship Fund in Michael Abram Nugent's name, supporting the next generation of Bulldogs in their education. To donate, please make checks payable to Bowman High School and mail them to: 21508 Centre Pointe Pkwy, Santa Clarita, California 91350.

Charla “Char, Charlie” Wendy Moore, BHS 1964

Charla “Char, Charlie” Wendy Moore, 78 of Burbank, California passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones November 10, 2024, in Carlsbad, California.

Charla was born July 1,1946 to Jackie (Klowgard) Moore and Charles W. Moore in Glendale, California. Charla and her sister Mary were raised by their WWII widow single mom in Burbank, California.  Char was a member of the senior class at Burbank High School in 1964 and received her GED later. Early in her life she was a switch board operator and a bank officer specializing in new accounts.  She also worked for a long time as a receptionist in a hair salon and hostess at a restaurant and night club. While working at the salon she modeled many hairstyles for the stylists in addition to her receptionist duties. While she was a hostess at the restaurant and nightclub, she performed at many LBGTQ+ fundraising events held there as Marilyn Monroe. She developed many meaningful and lasting friendships.

Her second career was being a “Jill of all trades”. She taught herself many skills to remodel the home she lived in with her mom and her sister’s home.  These skills included, but were not limited to, painting, wallpapering, laying tile inside the home and brink patios, crown molding, hanging and changing light fixtures, designing and laying sprinkler systems in the yard, and anything else that needed to be fixed.  Not only was she handy around the house, but she was also extremely creative when it came to sewing her own clothes, drapes, and other crafts including beautiful fabric covered photo albums. She loved jewelry and was talented in creating and fixing those items as well.

Charla was always an avid dog lover.  Her first dog was a Mini Pincher named Susie. After that she rescued 3 German Shepherds, Brandi, Mandi and Katie. She also cared for her sister’s dogs often as well. She often referred to herself as a dog whisperer. Early in her life she was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. This disease controlled a lot of her activities due to the debilitating nature of her case. She became involved with The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America and served on the board for a time.  She was also an active contributor to many charities. She also volunteered with the Women of Salem circle her mother was an active part of. She made food and took pictures at events her mother hosted or attended. She enjoyed being of service.

Joseph John James, BHS 1964

Joseph John James, BHS 1964
October 24, 1946 — May 25, 2025

Joseph John James passed away peacefully surrounded by his five children, whom he loved. After years of living with Parkinson’s, he left his broken body behind. He also left behind a legacy of love, adventure, and influence. “Once a teacher, always a teacher,” he influenced thousands of students and athletes with his genuine love for kids and passion for teaching.

If you are reading this, it’s likely he taught you something: how to swim, how to drive, how the body systems work, how to ride a motorcycle, how to take care of an engine, how to golf, how to wrestle, how to throw a football, how to wakeboard, waterski or snow ski, how to be brave, how to try something new, how to love genealogy, and most importantly—how to have fun.

Joe was born October 24,1946 to John William James and Ruth Lucille Thompson. As the youngest of five, he was loved and spoiled by his two sisters and tagged along everywhere with his two brothers. He enjoyed his childhood in Burbank, California, where he fondly remembers building a fort with his Dad and playing kick the can and other games.

His mother was an athlete and his greatest fan. She never missed any of his games and was well known by all the referees for her banter. His father was a Scoutmaster and many of Joe’s best memories and character traits came from his scouting experiences. When he was 11 years old, he hiked 50 miles to Mt. Wilson with his Dad and troop. He remembered hiking the High Sierras, Death Valley, and his favorite, Soledad Canyon. His dad was also the fire chief, which was ironic because Joe had a propensity to light things on fire! In fact, throughout his life he loved setting off fireworks and made long drives to Wyoming to purchase large fireworks in order to provide the epic “Joe Show” for family and friends.

He made the friends of a lifetime in his youth, a group that was nicknamed the “Mormon Mafia.” They had a reputation as athletes that didn’t drink or smoke. They attended church and played on the church sports teams, whose wins were “legendary.” As a teen, he lived for sports. He played football, basketball, track and field and softball. His senior year he was voted Most Valuable Player in football and Most Improved in basketball. His church team went to five all-Church basketball championships. He played football at Burbank High school as a tight end, then at Glendale Junior College and eventually for Brigham Young University. He graduated from BYU in Physical Education and spent some time as an assistant coach alongside one of his heroes, LaVell Edwards. His first teaching job was at Springville High School, as a science teacher and coach—the beginning of his lifelong passion. “Coach James” was born.

He taught Human Biology and Sports Medicine at Weber High for 22 years. He later became a principal for Fremont High. He was a football coach, a golf coach, and for many years, a wrestling coach. He taught swim lessons and Drivers’ Ed in the summer. He retired at age 55.

Some of Joe’s favorite people were his grandchildren. He loved inviting them over to swim, taking them for rides on the motorcycle, teaching them to kneeboard, playing frisbee golf, and playing his favorite game, “Grandpa’s Life.” He delighted in going to watch their games and coach from the sidelines. He was so proud of their accomplishments, whether they were in sports, academics, music, dance or theater.

Joe loved riding motorcycles. Some of our most cherished family memories are from annual Spring Break trips to Moab. He loaded up the motorhome and drove narrow roads near cliffsides to find the perfect campsite at Kane Creek. Another favorite was our family trips to Lake Powell and Bear Lake. If you rode in his boat, he was determined to get you out on the water and possibly send you flying off the tube. It wouldn’t have been a trip with him if you weren’t listening to Classic Rock. He loved music and loudly sang along, often wanting to play “Name That Tune.”

Joe was blessed with a full life, including several significant relationships. He shared 35 years with his first wife, Phoebe Jane Wilkins (Fournier), and together they raised five children, teaching them to love adventure and filling their lives with unforgettable memories. They enjoyed welcoming grandchildren into their lives. He later found companionship with Pat Larsen Rhodes for ten years. He loved golfing and traveling with her and hosting gatherings at the swimming pool. At age 72, he married Sherry Ward, a kind caregiver and friend. Although each marriage came to an end, each relationship brought lessons and connections to his life.

Joe had a strong testimony of Jesus Christ and the Restoration. He loved studying for lessons and listening to podcasts about the gospel. He was excited to talk about the Book of Mormon with others. In his later years, he served a senior mission at the Deseret Mill. From his mistakes, he learned the value of the Atonement of Jesus Christ and was deeply grateful for it. The gospel brought purpose and perspective to his life, especially in his challenges.

Joe is survived by his five children: Erin Madsen (Michael), Lindsay Johnson (Haakon), Ryan (Heidi), Taylor (Shannon) and Dustin James (Jyl) and 21 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 2, at 2:00 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary at 1867 N. Fairfield Road, Layton, Utah. Friends may visit with family on Sunday, June 1, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and June 2, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the mortuary.

Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Park at Layton.

Services will be live-streamed by the family at this link:

Alice Jean Moore Robinson, BHS 1964

Alice Jean Moore Robinson, BHS 1964

In Loving Memory of Alice Jean Moore Robinson

Alice, a beloved daughter, wife, exceptional mother, and adored grandmother, passed away peacefully on 1/7/2025. She was a woman of many talents and passions, leaving behind a legacy of love, adventure, and faith.

Born to Ernie and Betty Moore, Alice, was known from a young age for her out of the box thinking and love of God’s creation. She excelled in guitar and enjoyed playing with her family on vacation. As a young woman, she jumped horses, raced sled dogs, mapped rivers for white water companies and traveled with her family. All those skills would help when raising 3 boys and all their friends.
As a mom of three boys, she stayed one step ahead of their limitless energy as well as their friends. She was gentle with boxing and wrestling injuries and then firm when knife juggling practice got too fast or close. She was always growing in her love and care for her family.

In 1992 she started with Los Angeles Maritime institute. She immediately won the mom title from many young men and women that needed such love and focus. She always sought to say “yes but…” so there was always a means of communication and loving understanding conveyed to young people struggling to adapt in a world of so many negatives. She earned a USCG License to sail tall ships and became known as Captain Mom.

Her lifelong dream of owning her own horse was fulfilled in her best friend Razmataz. This had the added blessing of a “barn” family that enjoyed her fellowship and trail time. Above all, Alice was a devoted Christian whose faith was central to her life. She was known for her deep love for children, dedicating much of her time to teaching, mentoring, and simply being a beacon of joy and guidance to the young ones around her. Her home was always open, filled with laughter, stories, and the warmth of family gatherings.

She is survived by her husband, George, children Matthew, Jason and Travis, and grandchildren Luke, Isabel, Myra, Nolen, Mason, Noelle, Owen, Titus and Tanyn, as well as numerous friends who felt like family. Alice was predeceased by her younger brother Burbank Fireman Alan Scot Moore.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Los Angeles Maritime Institute, reflecting her lifelong commitment to helping children and spreading the message of faith and love on the Swift of Ipswich.
Alice will be remembered not just for her remarkable achievements but for the love, kindness, and joy she spread wherever she went. Her spirit, one of adventure, faith, and unconditional love, will continue to guide and inspire all who knew her.

"Until we meet again, fair winds and following seas."

This was sent from her son.

Daniel Griesmann, BHS 1964

Daniel Griesmann, BHS 1964

We are sad to tell you that we lost Dan on October 2, 2020. He got sick with digestive issues, had his gall bladder removed, and was in and out of the hospital a few times before his kidneys started to give him trouble. He was sent home, but then took a turn for the worse. Soon, he was back in the hospital on a ventilator.

He passed peacefully and is no longer in pain. Thank God! His sons Brian and Todd Griesmann were with him when he passed. Danny was always friendly and well liked. He will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. God Bless Danny. (From Sharon Griesmann, sister)
