Maurice Milton Wiley, Jr., BHS 1946

Maurice Milton Wiley, Jr., BHS 1946

Mike Wiley was born September 30, 1928, to Maurice "Maury" Sr. and Pauline Kubias Wiley in Redlands, California. He grew up with younger brother, Jerry, in Burbank, California. The Wiley family was athletic and Mike was especially proud of Maury, who was a four-sport letterman and inductee into the University of Redlands Athletic Hall of Fame. As a high school student, Mike played football for his dad while he was head coach at Burbank High School. After high school, Mike started his college education at the University of Redlands and then transferred to Glendale College.

In September 1950, Mike was called to active duty in the U.S. Army Reserves and served as an Operations Chief in the 625 Field Artillery Battalion, reaching the rank of Master Sergeant. His unit served in Japan and Korea from 1950 to 1952. After an honorable discharge from the Army in May 1952, Mike met and married his wife, Jean Angela Valentino, on November 14, 1953. He completed his education at UCLA and earned both a BS (1954) and MS (1956) degree in Physical Education.

Soon after graduation, he began a 34-year career as a coach and health education teacher in the Los Angeles Community College system. Mike began by coaching football at LA Valley College but eventually settled into his primary coaching career in swimming and water polo for the next 18 years. In 1972, he transferred to East LA College to teach, coach and oversee their new, state-of-the-art swim stadium. In 2012, Mike was inducted into the Los Angeles Valley College Athletic Hall of Fame, where he was honored as "one of the legendary swim coaches in the history of the California Community Colleges." During his tenure, Mike trained over 100 All-American and two future Olympic swimmers. His teams won dozens of conference and regional championships and one CA State Championship in 1970. At his induction ceremony, a colleague noted that, "Mike Wiley achieved amazing greatness in coaching and it was all because of his relentless enthusiasm for coaching his swimmers."

Mike and Jean Wiley created their family by adopting three daughters, Angela Marie (1962), Valentina "Tina" Ann (1965) and Carla Maurine (1967). The family lived in South Pasadena, California from 1973 until 1986, where happy memories included summer vacations spent in Malibu and, later, at their mountain cabin in Lake Arrowhead. In his leisure time, Mike enjoyed golfing, military history, watching football and (later in life). A constant throughout his life was Mike's preference to adhere to "the routine," which faithfully started with going out to breakfast every morning. Over the years, he developed many cherished friendships with members of his breakfast groups. In 1988, Mike and Jean settled as empty nesters in beautiful Camarillo, California, where they lived until 2007 when they left their native California and moved to Washington. They first enjoyed Washingtonian life as residents of Jubilee-Lacey and then finally landed at Revel in late 2018.

Mike entered into eternal rest on January 15, 2022.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Jean Wiley; daughters, Angela Wiley and Valentina "Tina" Paz, both of California; daughter, Carla Rudd, and son-in-law, Dr. Jay Rudd of Olympia; grandchildren, Shana Paz, Nicolas Paz, Justin and Kimberly Rudd, Allyson Rudd, Lindsay Rudd; and great-grandson, Traidin Paz.

He will be remembered by his family and friends as a kind and loyal family man who loved to get a laugh. He lived life with great integrity and in accordance with his Catholic faith. In his final years, he loved to tell stories reminiscing about his life in California, his military experience and, most especially, what being "Coach" meant to him. Mike spent his final weeks in the comfort of his family's home, showered with love and prayer. His memory will be cherished as our beloved husband, father and grandfather.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart in Lacey, followed by burial with military funeral honors at Tahoma National Cemetery on January 31, 2022. The mass will be available online livestream at 10:30 a.m. via the Sacred Heart YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/c/SacredHeartLacey

Kristi Kathleen Bertrand Herrera, BHS 1987

Kristi Herrera was born on September 8, 1969 and passed away on January 19, 2022 in a Los Angeles Motel/Hotel. According to the Los Angeles Medical Examiner her cause of death was deferred pending additional Investigation. She was just 52 years old.

Kristi's father was former Burbank High Principal William Bertrand he passed away in 2015. She is survived by her husband Rene Herrera, children and siblings. No other details at this time.

May she rest in peace. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Rene Herrera, Kristi's husband posted this tribute to his wife......

10:45 January 19 2022 was the day the Earth stood still, galaxies collided and God lost control and screwed up.

My wife, soulmate, best friend, High School sweetheart took her last dying breath in my arms and was ripped in an untimely fashion from this Earth.

I have seen countless dying people in my line of work and even held a dying best friend in my arms but nothing could prepare me for this.

I want to thank everyone for reaching out to me and our family with your kind and heartfelt words, it is evident that Kristi had made an impact on you.

Kristi always said if it was the last thing she did she was going to get this Family together and close… And she did!

Our immediate family, our in-laws, cousins, uncles, aunts have been together ever since her untimely passing.

We’re it not for all the love, thoughts, encouraging words, thoughts and prayers I would have be very happy and tempted to chase after her even if it meant going through Hell first.

Kristi Kathleen was an inspiration to the world and was a magical Bright Candle that lite the way for everyone. She was always there to help anyone or anything in need. She was selfless and truly put everyone before herself. Her love and desire for life was always visible by her beautiful smile. She was never judgmental no matter what race, religion, ethnicity, political view. She was always the mediator and would never take sides but would listen to everyone and offer a solution. Her motto was always to find the good in people rather than focus on the bad. We have been through Hell and Highwater and back and lived, loved and laughed til her very last breath.

She took a little street punk and turned him to a mushy loving Old Grandpa she never gave up on me and always strived to make me a better person. Even in my darkest hours she was a beacon of light for me to follow. All of the lame brain ideas and hobbies she always supported liking it or not. I’ve had an incredible journey with her and I cherish every moment. Our time was cut way too short and has left me and countless of others a huge void and broken Heart that can never be repaired or filled.

They say God has a plan well I think I need to have a discussion with him cause not only did he make a catastrophic mistake but he broke the mold with her.

She has left some enormous shoes for our family to fill and there will never be another woman like her!
I love you Kristi Kathleen with all my πŸ’”and soul and cannot wait too see you again. I will talk to you, love and cherish you til the day I die. Which in it of itself will seem like Hell. But you’ve given me such a large family and taught me how to love so deeply that I promise to take the reigns taking care of our family and carry on your dreams and wishes of keeping everyone United.
I love you Baby forever and always! πŸ’”❤️‍πŸ©ΉπŸ™ŒπŸ½πŸ˜žπŸ™πŸ½

I know you are up there with Mr. Bertrand and will be keeping an eye on us. I will be looking for a pair of Monarch Butterflies fly around.
I assume I’ll have to keep rooting for Dodgers as well! πŸ’™
RIP Kristi.

Kenneth B. Worthen, BHS 1939

Kenneth B. Worthen, BHS 1939

September 6, 1921 - July 22, 2017

Kenneth B. Worthen, an innovative, compassionate and highly regarded San Fernando Valley community leader and 1992 Fernando Award honoree, died Saturday, July 22, 2017 of natural causes. He was 95 years old.

Ken was born on September 6, 1921 in St. Paul, Minnesota. After moving to the San Fernando Valley and graduating from Burbank High School, Ken served his country in the Pacific and China during World War II. He retired from military service as a Captain in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. He was an executive at the Southern California Gas Company, retiring in 1991 after 40 years of service in activities including marketing, public relations, public affairs and community economic development.

Ken served on the boards of many local nonprofit organizations, as well as many task forces on issues of concern in Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley, raising millions of dollars for local charities in the process. He was elected to the El Proyecto del Barrio, Inc. Board of Directors in 1985, where he served with distinction until his death. He was El Proyecto's Board Chair from 1994 to 2008. During his chairmanship, El Proyecto broadened its mission by expanding its self-owned facilities to include active health clinics and/or human services programs in Arleta, Winnetka, Sun Valley, Panorama City and Azusa. "El Proyecto del Barrio and the hundreds of thousands of individuals and families we serve owe a huge debt of gratitude to the leadership, kindness, vision and dedication of Ken Worthen," said El Proyecto President/CEO Corinne SΓ‘nchez. "He spent his life helping underserved populations throughout the San Fernando Valley and beyond. He put his whole heart and soul into helping others, and we will be forever grateful for the tremendous impact he and his wife Helen Madrid-Worthen have had in building El Proyecto from a small community clinic to one of the leading nonprofit organizations in Los Angeles County. He was a truly great leader, and an even greater human being."

In addition to his more than three decades of service on the El Proyecto Board, Ken was a founder and long-term board member of the Los Angeles Valley College Foundation (formerly the Patrons Association). He served on the New Directions for Youth Board since its inception. He was also a past president of the Van Nuys Area Chamber of Commerce and Mid-Valley Rotary and also headed the Valley Economic Development Center, Mid-Valley YMCA and the Southern California Swimming Association Boards. Ken was a stalwart contributor to Rotary International charitable projects in the U.S. and abroad.

As an aside, he also acted in many local theatre productions over the years. These were just some of the many community contributions that led to Ken being honored as the Fernando Award Winner for 1992. The Fernando Award is considered the highest honor a San Fernando Valley resident can receive. It is awarded annually to the citizen judged to have done the most to improve the quality of life of San Fernando Valley residents. Among the many other honors he has received are March of Dimes Volunteer of the Year; Listing in Who's Who of U.S. Economic Development; The Greater Los Angeles 5-County Chamber of Commerce Award for outstanding contributions to Southern California Economic Development, the Amateur Athletic Union Award for advancing the sport of "swimming in the Southland', the El Proyecto del Barrio Spirit Award for his decades of inspirational leadership; and the Greater Van Nuys Rotary "Service Above Self" Award, which was presented to Ken in 2016.

Ken also served his country with distinction during World War II and beyond as a Captain in the U.S. Marine Corps. During the war, he was first stationed on Guam, later on Okinawa, where he devised new tank tactics that saved the lives of many Marines who were engaged in one of the fiercest battles of the war. Ken next served in Northern China, where he witnessed the surrender of 30,000 Japanese troops. He retired from the Marine Corps Reserves in 1959. For his valor, he was awarded the Navy Presidential Citation and the Asia-Pacific Campaign Award with two Combat Stars.

He lived in Woodland Hills with his wife, Helen. Between them they have three sons, three daughters, six grandsons and five granddaughters. The Worthen family requests donations in memory of Ken be made to one of his three favorite charities: El Proyecto del Barrio Foundation, New Directions for Youth, or Los Angeles Valley College Foundation.
