Charles Edwin "Chuck" Gilkey, BHS 1962

Charles Edwin "Chuck" Gilkey, BHS 1962
August 4, 1944 — October 16, 2014

Charles Edwin "Chuck" Gilkey was born August 4, 1944, in Oakland, CA, and passed away October 16, 2014, at his home in Bakersfield, CA. A lifelong and sixth-generation Californian, he had a deep love for the state and its beaches, cities, mountains, and lakes. He was a teenage surfer in the 1960s in Southern California, and he delighted throughout his life in 60's surf and car culture. The aroma of a medium-rare steak on an outdoor grill was one of his favorite things.

He developed a deep interest in ancestry and genealogical research in the last years of his life and compiled an extensive archive of research on the line of Gilkeys from which he descended, tracing his family history back through the pioneers of the Monterey Bay area, to Revolutionary -Era soldiers on the East Coast, to Northern Ireland where his ancestors set sail for America, and finally back to Scotland where his family line originated.

When his country needed him, he answered the call, enlisting in the United States Army during the Vietnam war era. He was a paratrooper and Sergeant in the famed 101st Airborne Division, "The Screaming Eagles."

Chuck graduated from Burbank High School in 1962, and from California State University, Sacramento, where he earned his degree in Government. He went on to a career in accounting, finance, and administration across many industries, including Corrections, from which he retired in 2007. In 1981, he fulfilled a childhood dream of opening an ice cream parlor with the establishment of "Krunchfunkels," in Delano, CA.

Chuck loved movies, and even more than movies, Chuck loved music. More than any other music, Chuck loved the music of the 60's and 70's, with the Beach Boys remaining his favorite band from the time he first saw them in concert as a teenager, (they were just starting out; he was in the front row and they kept stepping on his feet), to the last days of his life.

He was preceded in death by his wife Theresa Ann "Terri" Gilkey in 1990; his second wife Judith Ann "Judy" Gilkey in August of 2014; his father Carroll Verne Gilkey; and his mother Thelma Mae Gilkey. He was devoted to each of his wives and loved and cared for each of them through long illnesses.

Chuck is survived by his daughter Michelle Gilkey and daughter-in-law Lisa Oman of Santa Cruz, CA. He remained a close and caring member of the extended families of each of his wives, including the Herrera family of Delano, CA, and the Culberson and Acord families of Bakersfield, CA.

Services will be held on Monday, October 27th. A Celebration of Chuck's Life will be held at 9 AM at Delano Mortuary, 707 Browning Rd, Delano, CA. A graveside service will follow at 11 AM at North Kern Cemetery in Delano.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that charitable contributions be made in memory of Charles Gilkey to The Monterey Bay Aquarium, which is dedicated to conserving the oceans he so loved.

Diana Gaddy Klouse, BHS 1955

Diana Gaddy Klouse, BHS 1955

RED HOOK- Diana G. Klose, 77, passed away Dec. 18, 2015, at Northern Dutchess Hospital after a brief illness, while her husband Taylor Klose, of Red Hook, kept vigil at her bedside.
Also at her bedside was a daughter by a previous marriage, Brooke Stevens, and granddaughter, Rowan Willigan, both of Red Hook.

Diana and Taylor were married for 33 years and settled in Dutchess County some 25 years ago, after living in London and Oxford, England, pursuing writing careers.
A woman of great spirit, generosity, compassion, and love of life, Diana had two other surviving children by previous marriages – Marta Hill Gray, of Orange, Va., and Jason Stevens, of Victoria, British Columbia.

Diana was a student of Spanish literature. A 1964 graduate of UCLA, she continued graduate studies in literature at U.C. Irvine (CA) and the Sorbonne in Paris. Diana was an anti-Vietnam war activist. She traveled extensively and lived in Europe, Australia, and the West Coast before marrying Taylor in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1983.

She possessed resilient courage in the face of intractable arthritis that caused her intense pain for many years. She was a breast cancer survivor.

Diana loved travel and the lively arts, spoke and read French and Spanish, and subscribed to – and was much entertained by - Paris Match, the French weekly of news, celebrities, and the arts.

She and Taylor first met and dated briefly in the 1960s at UCLA. Although they parted back then, they never forgot each other. 20 years passed before they met again – with Harvard University playing Cupid by forwarding to Taylor (RHCS '54 / Harvard '58) a letter sent to the Alumni Office by Diana - who hoped to see him once again but had no idea where – or even if – he was living. Their tale of love lost and reclaimed has touched family, friends, and complete strangers from Los Angeles, to Washington, to New York, Moscow and Red Hook.

Diana was predeceased by her parents, Carl and Geraldine Gaddy of Los Angeles.
Diana is survived by brothers, Philip Gaddy, Nahcotta, Wash; and Brian Gaddy, Los Angeles. Other survivors are stepson, Ian Klose, Sunnyvale, Calif; and five grandchildren: Brooke's Rowan, Macklin, and Galen; Jason's Hannah and Zoe.

A celebration of Diana Klose is planned for the spring. Arrangements are under the direction of Burnett & White Funeral Homes, 7461 S. Broadway, Red Hook, N.Y.

Received this email notifying me of her death. I corrected the high school in the obit.

Carol Ann Olson (married name Carol Williams) class of 1960 who passed away in Thousand Oaks recently.  Some of the info in the paper (Ventura County Star) was wrong  and so I contacted her church.  I was told that her husband had died some years ago and no other relatives.  Her illness left her unable to speak, etc.  I think a neighbor wrote the obit.  It is basically right as far as I know, except for the mention that she graduated from Burroughs with honors.  Not so.  I was a friend throughout elementary school (Monterey Ave), junior high (Luther Burbank) and Burbank High School where she was in Secretarial Science for all three years. I was with her the night we graduated from Burbank High!  I am hoping you can add this to your blog.  Although we were good friends in school, we did not communicate for many years.  But I do feel an obligation to get the facts correct.  thank you, Marcia Mudgett
