Carl Lane, BHS 1956

Carl Lane, BHS 1956

January 15, 1939 – February 23, 2016

The Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles, California, Sunday, March 6, 2016

Carl Lane, at the age of 77, passed away peacefully, at home, on the morning of February 23, 2016, with his wife, Jo, by his side. Carl was the loving husband of Jo Topps, father of Curt Lane and Mitchell Lane, grandfather of Collin Lane, and brother of Carolyn Castelli. He will be missed by the many who loved him.

Carl was born in Los Angeles, California in 1939, son of Carl Lane and Myra Kinard, and lived his early years in Burbank, California, where he graduated from Burbank High School in 1956. Carl later graduated from Cal State LA with a Master’s Degree in Kinesiology. Always an athlete, Carl participated in and coached many sports. Carl joined the Palos Verdes Unified School District in 1963, where he was a teacher, coach and principal at the secondary level. Carl retired from his career in education, as an elementary principal, in the Lowell Joint School District in 2000.

Carl enjoyed life to its fullest. During his high school and collegiate days Carl played football and ran track. Later he completed numerous triathlons and 30 marathons, with a 3:10 personal record. He loved to body surf, play beach volleyball, water-ski, cross-country and downhill ski. Carl camped and backpacked throughout the western states. His interests in the natural world took him on trips to Alaska, Costa Rica, British Columbia, the Galapagos, and Argentina. Carl’s interest in history found him on trips to Japan, Italy, Greece, Spain, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands. Some of his last adventures included running on the ship while it crossed the Panama Canal, on his 75th birthday, trekking the Andes in Patagonia and hiking in Iceland.

Carl loved good food, music and wine. Carl’s vegetable garden produced amazing additions to the meals he and Jo so loved to cook. His tomatoes were legendary! Carl’s music collection spanned classical to jazz. Carl and Jo attended many jazz concerts, events and festivals. He especially enjoyed attending concerts and festivals at the Hollywood Bowl, where good food, music and wine could be enjoyed simultaneously! His wine collection began in earnest with the help of his friend and mentor, Bob Wilson. Carl began collecting wine in the early days of the wine boom in California. He loved to host “blind wine tastings,” with friends and then share the results with wine makers. In September 2015, Carl and Jo toured Bordeaux, France, to taste the wine. While Carl enjoyed the wines of Bordeaux, he couldn’t wait to get home to a big California Syrah!

Carl loved to dream! Please live yours! In lieu of flowers, please support the Leukemia Society.

Race Crash Takes Life Of Local Man

A former Burbank High School athlete, Steve Searock, 23, died Sunday of injuries suffered Saturday night when his racer overturned eight times in the California Racing Association's main event at Ascot Stadium, Gardena.

Searock, 2404 N. Brighton Street, went over the wheels of one car onto the back crash wall before his new $6,000 car made eight deadly rolls down the back stretch.

The spectacular accident occurred just after Searock had tangled with another car low on the south turn. He broke away in the infield, where he accelerated and skidded just before the crash. Searock was removed immediately to Gardena Hospital where he died of massive brain injuries at 11:08 a.m. Sunday. He never regained consciousness.

Prior to the race, Searock and his crew were presented an award for the best appearing car and crew. It was only the second time he was driving the car. Ironically, Searock was given a push by a green truck - a color commonly considered a racing jinx - before the race.

He was termed an "up and coming young driver" by CRA president Walt James. Searock, a three-year football and two-year baseball letterman at Burbank High, had been driving for five years, but only one for CRA.

He leaves his widow, Gale and two children, Stephen, 4, and Laurie, 2.

Juanita Saul Baird, BHS 1956

Juanita Saul was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on April 11, 1938. She was raised on a farm that began her life long passion for animals and gardening. Her family relocated to Burbank, California when she was a young child. She graduated from Burbank High School in 1956. In 1957 Juanita met Dick Baird at Disneyland. They had their first date at Bob's Big Boy. Dick and Juanita married on March 21, 1958.

Juanita loved being a mother to her five children, Rose Mariee, Roberta, Richard, Robin, and Renee. Juanita enjoyed being a stay at home mom and was very involved with the kids schools, scouting and sports teams throughout the years. Juanita would later work at Cal State Northridge where she and Dick made many wonderful memories supporting the Women's Softball Team.

Juanita's favorite place to visit with her family was the "Happiest Place on Earth" Disneyland and Disney World. Juanita loved fast rides and roller coasters. Her favorite ride was 'Soarin Over California'. Juanita looked forward to spending time at the Hacienda Hotel in Las Vegas in the early years where Lady Luck was often by her side. More recently Juanita visited the Barona Resort and Casino where she loved the beautiful rose gardens and listening to Jonathan play her favorite requests on the piano. Juanita received great joy in spending holidays with her family which included her children's spouses and grandchildren: Tim, Tommy, Nikki, Karin, Derek, Kyle, Travis, Louie, Alfonso, Catalino, Luisalina, Lisa, Juan, and Cristian.

Juanita died peacefully on Wednesday, October 10, 2012. During Juanita's last hours with family and friends we played her favorite music. The following is an excerpt of one of her favorite songs that truly moved her up until the very end… "Near, far, wherever you are I believe the heart does go on. Once more you open the door and you're here in my heart and my heart will go on and on." You will always be in our hearts "Missy B" and we will carry your spirit and love on and on.

A private Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, October 20, 2012. In lieu of flowers, please send a memorial contribution in Juanita Baird's name to the Arthritis Foundation Hope Through Heroes by calling 1-800-283-7800. Juanita will be laid to rest in a private ceremony with family and friends.
