Donna Hall Fishburn, BHS 1946

Donna Hall Fishburn, BHS 1946

Donna Hall Fishburn, a veteran Hollywood stunt double and horsewoman who worked in hundreds of westerns in a 40-year career in which she doubled for Barbara Stanwyck in "The Maverick Queen," Debbie Reynolds in "How the West Was Won" and Doris Day in "Calamity Jane," has died. She was 74.

Fishburn, whose professional name was Donna Hall, died of lung disease Aug 7, 2002 at Providence St. Joseph's Medical Center in Burbank. Born in Los Angeles, Fishburn was the daughter of stuntman Frank "Shorty" Hall, a former jockey, who put her on a horse almost as soon as she could walk. At 3, she was thrown from a horse for the first time."Dad put me back on the saddle again and I've never been afraid of a horse," Fishburn said when she was an 18-year-old Burbank High School graduate and already wrangling movie horses.

Fishburn made her movie debut at 10 when a little girl was needed to come out of the starting gate in a racehorse picture. After she began her stunt career in the late '40s, she jumped off trains, fell off horses and transferred from horses to moving stagecoaches. She even jumped to a stagecoach while standing on two horses. Fishburn once said she was too scared to become an actress. But doing anything on horseback never frightened her, although movie work sometimes took a toll. In "Cat Ballou," she jumped off a train and hit a rock. And while she was working as a stuntwoman for Stanwyck on location for "Maverick Queen," a horse fell on her."Then," as she once recalled, "I got food poisoning from the catering truck, and the next day they accidentally dropped me on my head. But they paid me well--and I got to see a lot of Colorado."

Fishburn, who did trick-riding in rodeos on the weekends and once appeared at Madison Square Garden, was among only a dozen or so women doing western stunt work in those days. Among her other feature film credits are "Annie Get Your Gun," "Big Country" and "The Apple Dumpling Gang."

Fishburn also worked in numerous TV westerns, including "Kit Carson," "The Lone Ranger," "The Cisco Kid," "Wanted Dead or Alive" and "Have Gun Will Travel."She appeared frequently on TV's "Annie Oakley," doubling for star Gail Davis, said her husband and only survivor, retired movie wrangler Jay Fishburn, who said his wife did what she loved to do. "We couldn't wait for the sun to come up and hated to see it go down," Fishburn recalled of her movie days in 2000, the year she received a Golden Boot Award.

Hail to the King of Tea Cakes Amerio Corradi, known in Burbank, for fifty years, as the King of Tea Cakes has passed away at the age of 87. Blessed with an irrepressible lust for life he brought to generations of Angelenos the taste of pleasure and comfort which grew into the cult of the Tea Cake.

Born in 1922 to Italian immigrant parents Rudolpho and Francesca Corradi, Amerio lived and worked his entire life in Burbank. He attended Burbank High School when he met his wife Mary. Cal. and Nevada areas.

Martino's Bakery became a competitive force to be reckoned using the slogan "a tasty pie, a tender crust". But the enduring legacy of Amerio Corradi and Martino's Bakery is the Tea Cake. The Tea Cake was developed by Amerio and his partner Victor at the behest of client looking for a special light and airy cake, buttery and delicious. The result has been enjoyed by legends of people for more than fifty years.

Martino's Bakery was sold to Campbell's Soup/Pepperidge Farms in 1979. Amerio stayed on with Pepperidge Farms as a consultant for ten years. At which time he kept his creative needs satisfied by financing and directing a retail bakery in Burbank called The Original Martino's Bakery where Tea Cakes continue to satisfy the public each and every day. Scott Wayne Carlson, BHS 1967

Scott Wayne Carlson, BHS 1967

Scott Wayne Carlson July 11, 1949 - July 18, 2009 Scott Wayne Carlson was born to William and Lorraine Carlson on July 11, 1949 in Las Vegas, New Mexico. The family, including Scott's older brother, Steve, and younger brother, Brent, moved to Grand Junction, Colorado in 1953. The family owned and worked a small farm and ranch. During these early years in Colorado, Scott delighted in the outdoors and was often found hunting, fishing, or hiking.

In 1963 economic necessity required a move to Burbank, California and Scott became very involved in his church, developing a lifelong passion and commitment to serve his Lord and savior, Jesus Christ. After graduating from Burbank High School, Scott joined the Marine Corps and proudly served his country. He was a three tour decorated Vietnam Veteran achieving the rank of Corporal. The Purple Heart was among the honors that Scott received.

Scott was eventually placed on full Veteran's disability due to a number of life impairing ailments that included chronic debilitating headaches and sinus issues related to Agent Orange exposure and shrapnel that remained lodged in his brain following a close proximity grenade explosion. Despite Scott's difficulties, his heart's desire was to serve the Lord and following military service he began to pursue becoming a missionary bush pilot to bring the gospel to people groups living in hard to reach areas of the earth.

He became further disabled from a second story fall when the floor gave way on a decaying church building he was helping to tear down and then rebuild with others from his missionary organization. Following hip replacement surgery, Scott's plan to become a missionary bush pilot was dashed. However, he continued with his desire to serve God and pursued nursing and Bible degrees in college. Scott also returned to live in his beloved Colorado.

Scott had many and varied interests. He also continued as an avid outdoorsman throughout his life when health permitted. Known as a man of deep and abiding faith, Scott was a regular member of Calvary Chapel Grand Junction and hosted a weekly men's Bible study in his home. He was a generous donor in the name of the Lord to missionaries in far off lands and those in need at home. Scott went to be with the Lord on July 18, 2009 at age 60.

He is survived by his brothers, Brent and Steve, who reside in California and Minnesota respectively, as well as a host of extended family members. Scott will be greatly missed by all who had the honor and privilege of knowing this quiet and gentle servant of Christ.

Carol Jane Smallenburg, BHS Teacher

Carol Jane Smallenburg would have been 95 years old on Christmas Day. This evening (Tuesday, November 16th, 2010) she quietly passed away in her chair around 7:30 PM. We will not dwell on the loss of life, but rather upon the greatness of hers. Mrs. Smallenburg, known affectionately to many as "Mama Doc", received a doctorate in education after graduating from high school at 16 and earning her BA from Stanford University. This would be quite an achievement at any age, let alone for a woman in the 1930's. When she was born in 1915 women were not even allowed to vote yet! Mrs. Smallenburg retired in the early 1980's as a professor from Cal State Los Angeles and Head of the Social Sciences Dept.

I'll bet most people don't know that one of Mrs. Smallenburg first teaching positions was at Burbank High School in the late 1930's, which made her the oldest living BHS teacher. Mr. LiPera was one of her students! She once told me that she loved coming out of the building after school and looking out over the entire San Fernando Valley, which consisted mostly of farmland and orchards.

In addition to the thousands of students Mrs. Smallenburg inspired over the years, she was also a loving and devoted wife and mother. All four of her children (Harry - BHS 60, John - BHS 63, Carol Benson - BHS 65, and Bob - BHS 72) graduated from college and became teachers. Tonight, as we gathered at the old homestead located at the very end of Alameda in Burbank, we added up all of the people she paid for or assisted financially to complete their college degrees. In addition to her four children and four grandchildren, we counted at least four other people, for a total of no less than 12. She also created and annually funded several scholarships, including one at Burbank High, so her legacy will continue in years to come.

Arrangements are pending; however, cards for Harry, John, Carol or Bob may be sent to the family home at 840 South Sunset Canyon, Burbank, CA 91501. If you want to reach one of them personally, please email Trudie at tjhentze@aol.com and she will make sure they receive your message.

Rest in peace our darling friend. We will miss your brilliant mind and incredible sense of humor, but treasure the memories forever.

Earl C. Joslen; Retired Lockheed Manager

September 5, 1996, Los Angeles Times

Earl C. Joslen, a retired product support manager for Lockheed Corp., died Friday at his home in Ventura. He was 76.

Joslen was born April 6, 1920, in Redlands. He attended schools in Burbank from kindergarten through high school, graduating from Burbank High in 1938. He attended Glendale College, where he earned an associate of arts degree.

He worked as a riveter for Lockheed during the early part of World War II and then served with the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific.

Before the war, Joslen married Eileen Leona Hale of Glendale, whom he later divorced, and they had a son, David E. Joslen, who lives in Santa Clarita.

After the war, Earl Joslen resumed working for Lockheed and later attended Cal State Los Angeles, where he earned a bachelor's degree in psychology. He did graduate work in psychology at USC and obtained a general secondary teaching credential to teach high school.
But David Joslen said his father's job with Lockheed came before either teaching or practicing psychology.

Joslen became an inspector supervisor for Lockheed and later a product support manager, a position that took him around the world. He led and managed teams in Colombia; Charleston, S.C.; Newburgh, N.Y.; and Dayton, Ohio. He lived in Tehran, Iran, and Ottawa, Canada, for many years.

Joslen, who enjoyed boating and motorcycling, retired from Lockheed in 1983. He was a licensed pilot and had flown all over the world. Joslen and his daughter by another marriage, Jillian Kate Joslen, 12, of Santa Paula, were sponsors to eight children in South America. He had been president of several clubs, including the Stewart Air Force Base flying club in Newburgh.

In addition to Hale and his two children, Joslen is survived by two other former wives, Francoise Papparoze and April Bassile.

Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Home in Ventura. Graveside services are planned for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills. Memorial donations may be made to the Cancer Control Society in Los Angeles.
