Stricken with a strange ailment that racked his body with aches. James Mulgrew, 17, popularly known Burbank High School graduate, who moved with his parents to 1426 LeMoyne Street, Los Angeles recently, died yesterday at 3 a.m., in a city hospital where a squad of specialists labored futilely to check an unknown illness contracted less than 24 hours before.

Jimmy, who was well known here as a merry-hearted fellow, and an all-around athlete, arose Friday morning with a feeling of pain in his muscles. He asked his father to call a doctor. Shortly after he was taken to the California hospital, and later to the General hospital where a hurried consultation was held in a vain attempt to save his life. According to his father, it is believed that Jimmy was attacked by a form of infantile paralysis.

The Mulgrew family moved here nine years ago, Mr. Mulgrew being employed as a postman. Jimmy attended grammar school, junior high school and high school, graduating from the latter last June. He was a swimmer of exceptional ability, and gained credit for Burbank High School meets. He was also a hunter, fisherman, and skilled in handicraft. Versatile in his talents, he was also an excellent pianist, and enjoyed a large circle of high school chums, as well as older friends.

Jimmy had planned to attend the University of Southern California next year and was working this year in preparation. He is survived by a brother, Jack, who is studying at the University of California at Los Angeles; a sister, Miss Vivian Mulgrew, a student at Belmont High School, and his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Mulgrew, who formerly resided at 602 Santa Anita avenue.

Funeral services will be held at the grave, Forest Lawn Memorial Park, tomorrow at 2 p.m., the father said today.

GIRL STUDENTS INJURED WHILE CROSSING STREET, AUTO HITS STUDENTS IN CROSSWALK

Two Burbank High School students were injured, one of them critically, when they were struck Tuesday afternoon by an automobile at Glenoaks Boulevard and Grinnell Drive, shortly after leaving school. The motorist, Harry Miller, 34, of Saugus, was charged with felony drunk driving, according to Burbank Police Traffic Lt. Alan Ostroff.

Kathy Kelley, 15, of 2848 N. Keystone St., and Mary Wood, 15, of 2722 N. Brighton St., were crossing Glenoaks Boulevard when they were struck by the car. The Kelley girl was given emergency treatment at Burbank Community Hospital and then taken to the Glendale Sanitarium with a compound fracture of the right leg and numerous abrasions and contusions. Doctors there described her condition as “critical” today.

Miss Wood was taken to Burbank Community Hospital suffering from a laceration of the forehead, contusions and abrasions of the face. She was released after treatment.

The girls told police they were walking east across Glenoaks Boulevard in the pedestrian crosswalk at the time of the accident. They said that they reached the center of the street before they realized that Miller’s car was coming too fast to stop before hitting them. They added that they tried to run across the street but were unable to avoid being hit.

Miller reportedly told police he was northbound on Glenoaks Boulevard, approaching the intersection of Grinnell Drive, when he observed the two girls running in front of him. The accident was one of seven which occurred within a two-hour period from about 3 to 5 p.m. as rain pelted the streets

DEATH SNUFFS OUT A BRIGHT LIGHT – KATHY STRUCK DOWN NEAR SCHOOL

Young and gay and full of life. At the age of 15, Kathy Kelley of 2848 N. Keystone St. had so much to live for. She was an honor student, popular with her classmates and admired by her teachers. Now she is dead, Victim of a tragic automobile accident.

At 3:25 Tuesday afternoon, Kathy left Burbank High. Accompanying her was classmate Mary Wood, 15, of 2722 N. Brighton St. At 3:27 they started across Glenoaks Blvd. walking in the crosswalk at Grinnell Drive. Kathy waved to her mother, her laughter radiating sunshine on a rainy afternoon. Observing the girls in the crosswalk, motorists told police of slowing to a stop in wait for the girls. As the children neared the center of the street, they saw an approaching car and began to run.

Then it happened. It was over in an instant. Kathy lay in the street, critically injured. Her mother ran to her and clutched her daughter to her side. She removed her coat and placed it over Kathy. From somewhere bystanders brought blankets. There they waited for an ambulance in the drizzling rain of a cloudy, dark afternoon – made darker for those present by the tragedy that had unfolded before their eyes.

Kathy and her companion were taken to Burbank Community Hospital. There Kathy was to receive emergency care before being transferred to the Glendale Sanitarium where she died Wednesday afternoon, a little less than 24 hours after the accident. Mary was more fortunate. A step ahead of Kathy, she sustained contusions and abrasions and was released from the hospital after treatment.

Kathy’s teachers had described her as an unusually capable girl, with high standards and a desire to do more than was expected of her. Kathy’s grades bore out the opinions of her teachers. She was a member of the California Scholarship Federation, for which include a far above ordinary scholastic average. 

Through in her first year at Burbank High School, she had already become active as a member of the Foreign Exchange Club and the school a cappella choir. Her activities didn’t stop at school either. She was an active participant in the Presbyterian Church youth organization and was supervisor of a Junior Achievement group.

The motorist, Harry Miller, 34, of Saugus, reportedly told police he observed the girls when they ran in front of him. Traffic investigator Jack Bell said he has been charged with felony manslaughter. Kathy will be buried in the same dress she wore to her junior high school graduation.

MEMORIAL TO KATHY KELLEY PLANNED

Contributions for a memorial college scholarship fund are being accepted in lieu of flowers for, Miss Kathy Kelley, a Burbank High School student who died Wednesday. Ralph Kelley, father of the student, said Mrs. Thomas Murphy, of 3037 N. Lamer St., will set as collector of the fund. Later, a committee will be set up with school people for distribution to a deserving student or students, possibly for study in the fields of Spanish or music.

Funeral services for Miss Kelley, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Little Church of the Flowers, Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale. She is survived by her father and mother, Ralph and Lillie Kelley; brother, Tom; grandparents, Dr. R.H. Kelley, Mr. and Mrs. T.A. Sutton and Mrs. Reba C. Kelley.

LAKESIDE, CA -  A Lakesie man was killed Wednesday evening after he lost control of his truck on El Monte Road in Lakeside. Craig Leslie Crawford, 29, was discovered about 10 p.m. by the CHP officier, pinned underneath his 1979 pickup. He died five hours later at El Cajon Hospital.

SKELTON IDENTIFIED FROM DENTAL RECORDS

KAILUA-KONA – Police have identified a man whose skeleton was found in a remote area of Kailua-Kona Saturday as Dean Cunningham, 50, of Kailua-Kona, they said.

Cunningham was identified through dental records. An autopsy was unable to determine the cause of death, but there was no sign of foul play. The skeleton was found on a back street by a person looking for rocks to build a wall.

KONA REMAINS ARE IDENTIFIED

KEALAKEHE, Hawaii – Police identified skeletal remains found Saturday as Dean Cunningham, 50, of Kailua-Kona. Cunningham’s family reported him missing on September 13th. Police said the cause of death was not known. An autopsy was conducted Monday at Kona Community Hospital.

A man gathering stones for a rock wall found the remains at the end of Kamaka Eha Street in Kailua-Kona. They were identified through dental records.

SMSgt. George Francis Hall, Retired; age 70, of Larimore, ND, passed away on Sunday, October 2, 2022 at the VA Hospital in Fargo, ND.

On April 14, 1952 George was born at Midway Hospital in St. Paul, MN to Marian Therese (Winkler) and George Octavia DeLisle.  When George was a few years older the family moved to Burbank, California.  George attended and graduated from Burbank High School in May of 1970. 

In March, 1971, he enlisted in the Air Force.  His first duty station was at SAC Headquarters Offutt Air Force Base, Omaha, Nebraska where he met his wife Jewell Anna DuPree.  They had three children: John Paul (Claire) Hall of Larimore, ND; Marian Eloise (CMSgt. David) Southall of Elgin AFB, Florida and George Robert Ward (Dani) Hall of Grand Forks, ND.

George served in Vietnam while stationed in Thailand.  He was then stationed at Minot AFB, ND for 9-1/2 years.  He was then stationed at Misawa, AB, Japan for 4-1/2 years where his youngest child was born.  After Japan he was stationed at Grand Forks AFB, ND. He purchased a home in Larimore, ND, at that time where he and his family stayed after his retirement in April, 1992.

George was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather.  He is survived by 4 siblings, 4 siblings-in-law, 7 grandchildren: Aerica (Alex), Matthew, Michael, Megan, Sarah, Fara and Luca; several nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews.

George will be remembered as the youngest Eagle Scout in Burbank, California when he made rank, as an avid gardener, someone that would help anyone and watching his children and  grandchildren living life experiences and having fun.

Celebration of Life Services will be at Harvest Baptist Church, 701 East Front St., Larimore on October 15, 2022 at 1 p.m. with Pastor Ken Shaffer officiating.

Interment will be Monday, October 24 at 11 a.m. in the Fargo National Cemetery.

Funeral services have been scheduled for 11 a.m. tomorrow (Thursday) for Donald Norman Flowers at Hilburn's Funeral Chapel. Dr. Bernard Rice will officiate. A native of Glendale, Mr. Flowers lived in Newhall for ten years. He worked as a machinist.

Mr. Flowers was camping near Grass Valley when he was involved in an automobile accident. He died Saturday at the age of 41.

He is survived by a daughter, Kimberlie June Flowers of Valencia; his mother, Helen Flowers of Newhall; and foster family Jack and Rosalie Brush and David and Terri. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Hollywood Hills. Arrangements were made by Hilburn's Chapel.

At her request, no services will be held for Pamela Jo McKiney, 61, of Coquille. Pamela Jo was born on October 24, 1946 in Altadena, California, to Bill and Vivien (Froyd) Pyner. She died May 1, 2008, in Coos Bay.

She grew up and was educated in Southern California. She married David McKiney on March 1, 1975 in Los Angeles, California. They moved to Coquille in 1978. Pamela worked for the Coquille School District for many years, as well as at Umpqua Bank and most recently at Chery Creek Floral in Myrtle Point. She was an avid cook and loved gardening.

Pamela is survived by her husband, David of Coquille; son, Kevin and his wife, Kelly McKiney of St. Louis, Mo.; stepson, Geoffrey McKiney of Los Angeles; twin sister, Paige Ann Pyner of Coquille; and eight cats. She was preceded in death by her parents.

James Melvin “Mel” Thrasher, 76, died of natural causes on Saturday, May 31, 2003, at his home in Port Hueneme.

Mel was born in San Fernando on June 16, 1927, the son of Virgil and Alice Thrasher. He joined the United States Navy immediately after graduating from Burbank High School in 1945. He served as a machinist’s mate on board the YMS 349, a 137-foot wooden minesweeper, surviving both Typhoon Louise and the mine clearing of Kobe Harbor, Japan. Upon his discharge in 1946, he married Joyce Whittington of Los Angeles. He spent his entire working career at the Andrew Jergens Company’s Burbank plant, originally as a mechanic and retiring as production manager. After his retirement, he sailed extensively from the sea of Cortez to Canada’s Inland Passage on board the 40-foot sloop Rejoyce.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joyce Thrasher; children, Kathleen Sue Thrasher of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Charles Thrasher of Kingston, Washington, and William Thrasher of Monrovia, California; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 6, at South Coast Fellowship Church, 4050 Market Street, Ventura. Rather than flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the South Coast Fellowship Youth Center.

Fall Victim Identified

BISHOP, California – The man killed Sunday, September, 14, 1986, while mountain climbing above Pallisades Glacier was Donald Kershaw, a 28-year-old Los Angeles County social worker, the Inyo County Coroner’s Office reported Tuesday.

He fell from the sheer face of a rock formation while climbing with three companions.
