Memorial services for K.W. "Bud" Allen will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Clairemont Mortuary. Mr. Allen, 62, a local building contractor, died Feb. 27, 1985 in an automobile accident.

Mr. Allen was born in Los Angeles and graduated from Burbank High School. He was a second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps during World War II. In 1958 he came to San Diego and was a building contractor with Techbilt Company. through 1978. He also worked with Mark II Properties and was an independent developer of custom homes and condominiums.

Mr. Allen was a member of the Building Contractors Association and the American Building Contractors Association. He was also a member of the National Conservative Political Action Committee and an ardent fund-raiser for the Republican Party.

Mr. Allen is survived by his wife, Anne; a son, Terry; a daughter, Sherilyn; a stepdaughter, Sandra Treece; a stepson, Ronald Kociol; and six grandchildren. All live in San Diego.

Norma was born in Didsbury, Alberta, Canada, to Gale and Fern Swingle. Her family relocated to Burbank, Calif., when she was a young child. Norma and her sister, Eulla, graduated from Burbank High School. She worked at Lockheed Aircraft where she met and married her husband of 39 years, Lawrence F. Fadler.

Norma was a resident of Ventura County for over 40 years, living in both Camarillo and Thousand Oaks.

Norma was preceded in death by her sister, Eulla Masterpolito, and her loving husband, Lawrence. She is survived by her son, Kelly; daughter-in-law, Nancy; grandson, Guy Gordon Fadler; granddaughter, Shannon Lee Denman; and five great-grandchildren, Tayler Fadler, Braden Fadler, Annanda Denman, Sophia Fadler, and Gene Michael Denman.

A graveside remembrance will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Pierce Brothers Valhalla, 10621 Victory Blvd., North Hollywood, CA 91606. Arrangements by Conejo Mountain Funeral Home, Camarillo.

Teddy was born June 6, 1911 in Manchester, Oklahoma to Theodore "Fudge" Buckles and Myrtle Zella Gaskill. By 1920 the family had moved to Los Angeles, California. According to the Adler family this is how she met her husband Paul Adler :

The Adlers and the Buckles families lived on the same street in L.A. when Paul and Teddy were children, unbenownst to each other. Teddy and Paul were both high school graduates. Paul and Teddy met while on a double date--each was the other persons' date, but they made eyes at each other all evening, and that was that. He graduated from Burbank H.S. in 1927 and she in 1929, and that's when they got married on November 22, 1929 at Forest Lawn, Glendale, California.

Paul and Teddy had three children, Valerie, Loretta and Gerald Adler who died in 1958. Theodora Adler passed away on December 24, 1991 in Burbank, California. She is survived by her husband Paul and two daughters.

 Eleanor E. Kendall 1913 ~ 2012 DEL MAR -- On March 6, 2012, San Diego County lost a notable, long time educator. Ms. Eleanor Kendall, 98 years old and a resident of Del Mar for more than 70 years, passed away at Palomar Medical Center. Eleanor, who was known to her friends as "Jonesy," was the loving wife of George Johnston Kendall, who passed away in 1993. Eleanor and George were married for 51 years. Mr. Kendall was the well-respected, long time pharmacist of the Del Mar Drug Store.

Ms. Kendall was born in Cheney, Washington in 1913 and came to Burbank, California with her parents, Ina May and C.J. Jones, in 1926. She graduated from Burbank Senior High School and received a Bachelor's degree from the University of California at Los Angeles. She went on to earn a Master's degree in Education from the University of Southern California. Eleanor began her teaching career at Escondido Union High School in 1937 and served in the Ground Observer Corps, Air Defense Command, U.S. Air Force during World War II.

Eleanor entered the San Diego Unified School District as a teacher and counselor at the newly built Mission Bay High School in 1953. She was promoted to Vice- Principal at Clairemont High School when it opened in 1958. Always looking for new educational challenges, in 1963, Ms. Kendall was appointed the first Dean of Students at the new Mesa Community College when it began on the campus of Kearny High School. After 37 years as an educator, Eleanor retired in 1974 to fully enjoy her Del Mar beach house with George.

Swimming year round in the ocean was part of their active retirement live. Ms. Kendall was a petite person but had a huge heart. Her love of education, enthusiastic and optimistic personality was a perfect fit for being a teacher, counselor and dean of students. She impressed other administrators in the community college system with her ability to relate to both staff and students. Eleanor was commended for her worthwhile, innovative ideas to improve educational services. She received great satisfaction in encouraging and aiding students to achieve basic learning skills and to pursue their ambition in higher education. Her students could see that she truly cared for them and appreciated that she saw the best in them when others doubted their abilities. Many will fondly remember those quiet moments with Ms. Kendall where she would sincerely listen to their personal issues or learning problems. A humble person, Eleanor never really knew how much her encouragement and support meant to her students.

Ms. Kendall was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary educational society and the public service Altrusa International Club of San Diego. She was a life member of the California Parent Teachers Association and the UCLA Alumni Association. Eleanor was an active member of the P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) Sisterhood, Chapter PS of Del Mar (provides educational opportunities for women), the San Diego Administrators Association, and the Zlac Rowing Club of San Diego. Eleanor and George enjoyed their time exercising at the Magdalena Ecke Gymnastic Center -YMCA and contributed to its development.

Eleanor is survived by her niece, Pamela and Eugene Weber, and their children. She is also survived by nephews, George and Elizabeth Kendall and their children, David and Kathy Kendall and their children, Thomas Kendall and his children, and Eugene Kendall. The passing of Eleanor has greatly impacted Patricia Clardy Williams of San Marcos, a long-time family friend, who provided Jonesy loving comfort and assistance in her later years. In memory of Ms. Kendall, donations can be made to the YWCA of San Diego County, 1012 C Street, San Diego, CA 92101 and the Del Mar Library, 1309 Camino Del Mar, Del Mar, CA 92014. No public services are planned.

Kenneth Alan Weber , 58, of Fountain Hills, AZ passed away on July 7, 2007. He was born in Burbank, California on May 29, 1949 and graduated from Burbank High School in 1967.

In 2003, Ken moved to Fountain Hills to spend time with his sister and mother. He is survived by his caring sister, Sharon Weber of Fountain Hills, three cousins, Pat Toskes of Florida, Ginger VanAtta of Michigan, John Sponsel of Maryland, and his Aunt Dorothy Sponsel of Maryland.

Ken was predeceased by his father William Peter Weber in 1982, his mother Muriel Weber in 2007, and his brother William Ronald Weber in 1992. Ken was employed with Recovery Innovations of Arizona, Inc. (formerly Meta Services) for nearly 2 years as a peer mentor for people receiving services for chronic homelessness and substance abuse challenges. Ken loved to carry the message of hope and recovery to others both in his employment role and in the community.

He was also an avid sports enthusiast who loved to spend his free time watching football games with his close friend Rick Mollins of Fountain Hills. Ken was a loving and gentle soul who brought tremendous joy to the lives of many. A memorial service will be held on Friday July 13, 2007 at 10:00am at Church of the Ascension, 12615 N. Fountain Hills Blvd, Fountain Hills, AZ.

Carolyn S. Calkins, Mrs. Grant R. Calkins (nee Carolyn Sue Webb), 3734 Gleneagles Drive, Tarzana, died Saturday morning at the Medical Center of Tarzana from leukemia. She was born June 12, 1941 in Sheldon, Missouri and moved to Burbank in 1953. She was graduated from John Muir Junior High School and Burbank Senior High School. In 1963 she received a Bachelor of Science in Public Health from UCLA. She was married to Grant R. Calkins June 23, 1962.

Survivors are her husband, Grant; a nine-year-old daughter, Sandra Lynn; her mother and step-father, Margaret and William Gawthrop of Camarillo; a brother, Charles Webb of Van Nuys; a cousin, Mrs. Leo Palmer of Camarillo; and aunts and uncles and cousins in Missouri. Her father, Harold Webb, died in 1947.

Services 10:30 Tuesday, June 6, Church of the Hills, Forest Lawn- Hollywood Hills. Visitation from 4 to 9 p.m. on Monday.

Sharon Kay Flores, 48, died July 23, 2000, in Burbank. Mrs. Flores was born in Anderson, Ind. She was a Burbank resident for 40 years. She was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Matthew's LutheranChurch. She will be remembered for her commitment to aid all those in need.

She is survived by her husband of 28 years, David Flores; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa Flores and Erik Hansen; daughter and son-in-law Jamie Flores and Scott Meadows; daughters, Andrea, Darlene and Jackie; son, Christopher; parents, Arthur and Beverly Berg; sister and brother-in-law, Brenda and David Dyke; sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Ken Stonecypher; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, in Glendale. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Susan J. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Memorial service for Noel Thomas Weller, 57, will be later. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d'Alene is in charge of arrangements.


Mr. Weller, who was born in Reno, died Tuesday. He moved to North Idaho in 1991 from California. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite and was raised as a Theosophist (Universal Brotherhood).


Survivors include his wife, Nina; three sons, Michael and Gregory Weller, both of California, and Larry Weller of Guam; a daughter, Gloria Celeya of California; his mother, Jean Gullo of Arizona; a sister, Diane Burkes of Colorado; a half-brother, William Weller of California; and a half-sister, Doreen Morgan of California.

John Forbes passed away peacefully on May 3rd at the Palo Alto VA Hospice/Palliative Care Unit surrounded by his family. His final wish to be comfortable was more than met by the wonderful staff that cared for him during his final weeks.


John was born August 6, 1944 and raised in Burbank, California. After attending Pierce Junior College, John enlisted in the Air Force and served his country for four years, including one in Vietnam with a communication unit. Returning from Vietnam, he went to work for Pacific Bell. In 1975 John married Anita. They resided in Fountain Valley where they began raising their three children.


John enjoyed the thrill of racing, and while in the military, he raced motorcycles in Texas and Japan. During the 1970’s he raced V-bottom and tunnel boats in Southern California. In the 1980’s he slowed it down and began sailboat racing in Dana Point. John and family would actually win some regattas with their “kiddy crew”. Family vacation was something John always looked forward to. Some of his favorites were sailing to and around Catalina; trips to Yosemite, Hawaii, Italy, Ireland and Costa Rica; and a National Park road trip that included Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Badlands and Devils Tower.


In 1987 the family moved to Half Moon Bay, following his acceptance of a new position with Diasonics MRI, a company he had joined a few years earlier. He traveled to locations around the world helping troubleshoot installations of MRI machines. In 2000 he retired, following Toshiba’s purchase of the company and the closure of their South San Francisco office.


In retirement, John enjoyed photography classes at CSM and getting out into nature capturing its beauty on film. He volunteered at the Peninsula Humane Society, helping rabbits and guinea pigs find loving homes. He had been a member of the HMB Lions Club and was currently a member of the HMB I.D.E.S. Society. He enjoyed attending monthly meetings at the Pescadero Opera Society and gatherings of the National Brain Tumor Foundation in San Francisco. John looked forward to water workouts/aerobics at La Petite Baleen and the Mills Peninsula pools and he could be found most mornings for the past few years enjoying coffee at HMB Coffee Company.

It became evident during his 3 ½ year battle with brain cancer that the number of people impacted by this disease is rising, and some of the drugs used to help him near the end hadn’t been around when he was first diagnosed. He is survived by his wife, Anita Forbes, and their children: Lisa and James Phillips, Jessica and Andy Forbes and Dana and Hugo Oregel, and grandchildren Ryan, Sarah, Aiden, Paxton, Trevor, Charlotte, Myla, Elizabeth, Rowen and Hannah. He is also survived by his sister, Cheryl Elm.

Anyone who had the privilege of knowing John knew him as a tender, home-loving family man with a dry sense of humor. He touched many lives and will truly be missed by his family and friends

A Celebration of Life gathering will take place on June 6th.

Barbara Jonkey Hastings, BHS 1965

It's with great sadness that I write to let you know that our classmate, Barbara Jonkey (Hastings), passed away this morning March 22, 2012 in her sleep from lung cancer. She did not tell friends, choosing to live her life to the fullest and always keeping a positive attitude that she would be fine and the cancer would be beaten. Barbara's father is currently in the hospital recuperating from surgery, so memorial services will be pending until he recovers. I will let you know as soon as I hear anything else.

The actual address is 221 South Sixth St, Burbank 91501. There is only a small parking lot and the rest is on the street, so I recommend car pooling and/or arriving early.
