James Mulgrew

Stricken with a strange ailment that racked his body with aches. James Mulgrew, 17, popularly known Burbank High School graduate, who moved with his parents to 1426 LeMoyne Street, Los Angeles recently, died yesterday at 3 a.m., in a city hospital where a squad of specialists labored futilely to check an unknown illness contracted less than 24 hours before.

Jimmy, who was well known here as a merry-hearted fellow, and an all-around athlete, arose Friday morning with a feeling of pain in his muscles. He asked his father to call a doctor. Shortly after he was taken to the California hospital, and later to the General hospital where a hurried consultation was held in a vain attempt to save his life. According to his father, it is believed that Jimmy was attacked by a form of infantile paralysis.

The Mulgrew family moved here nine years ago, Mr. Mulgrew being employed as a postman. Jimmy attended grammar school, junior high school and high school, graduating from the latter last June. He was a swimmer of exceptional ability, and gained credit for Burbank High School meets. He was also a hunter, fisherman, and skilled in handicraft. Versatile in his talents, he was also an excellent pianist, and enjoyed a large circle of high school chums, as well as older friends.

Jimmy had planned to attend the University of Southern California next year and was working this year in preparation. He is survived by a brother, Jack, who is studying at the University of California at Los Angeles; a sister, Miss Vivian Mulgrew, a student at Belmont High School, and his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Mulgrew, who formerly resided at 602 Santa Anita avenue.

Funeral services will be held at the grave, Forest Lawn Memorial Park, tomorrow at 2 p.m., the father said today.

Paul William Adler was born in Zion, Illinois on July 21, 1909. His family moved to Burbank, California in 1918. In 1927, he went to work directly after graduating from Burbank High School at Lockheed Aircraft as a machinist. He later worked for Mitchell Camera and Technicolor in Hollywood, California. In 1937, he co-founded Adel Precision Projucts Corp., subcontracting for the aircraft industry. He founded several other small companies and remained self-employed throughout his professional career as a machinist.

He was married to Theodora (Teddy) Buckles (1929) until her death in 1991. They had three children; Loretta, Valerie, and Jerry. Teddy was a member of the Eastern Star. Loretta was a member of the Jobs' Daughters and presently resides in Pollack Pines, California. Valerie became a teacher and presently resides in Torrance, California. Jerry passed away in 1958. At his death in Torrance, California, Brother Adler was 91 years old and leaves his two daughters, seven grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and two great , great grandchildren.

He was Initiated an Entered Apprentice Mason in Burbank Lodge on September 14, 1939, Passed to the Degree of Fellocraft on October 19, 1939 and Raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason on November 30, 1939. He served the Burbank Lodge as Master in 1946. He became a Master of the Royal Secret of the 32* of the Scottish Rite and a Nobel of Al Malaikah Shrine in 1943. He was president of the Burbank Shrine Club in 1947. He was a life-long devoted and active member of the Burbank Lodge until recent years when his health failed. It was his ectreme pleasure to attend, in 1990, the 90th anniversary celebration of the founding of Burbank Lodge No. 406.

Brother Adler passed to the Celestial Lodge on Easter Sunday, April 15, 2001.

A private memorial service has been held for Peggie Valentine Steinauer, who died May 27, 1998, at age 87.


Mrs. Steinauer was born Oct. 1, 1910, in Portland. Her maiden name was Valentine. She graduated from Burbank High School in 1927 and attended the University of Southern California. She married Henry C. Shaw in 1928 and lived in San Francisco. She later divorced Shaw.


She graduated from the Webster College School of Business and was an instructor in the U.S. Army Air Force Technical School during World War II. She married Willard A. in 1945,and they moved to Alaska in 1948. She was administrative assistant to the president of Alaska Methodist University from 1959 to 1961. She also worked for the Kenai School District. She moved to Arch Cape in 1977. Mr. Steinauer died in 1980. She had lived in Portland for two years.


Survivors include her son, Donald H. Shaw of Snohomish, Wash.; daughter, Celia S. Wiebe of Portland; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.


Disposition was by cremation. Arrangements are by Killingsworth Little Chapel of the Chimes and Telophase Cremation Society.

Luella Proctor, 91, died May 19, 2001, in a Glendale hospital.

Ms. Proctor was born in Freeport, Ill., and lived in Burbank for 89 years. She graduated from Burbank High School in 1927. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marlan Proctor, a well-known attorney in Burbank for 60 years.

Ms. Proctor is survived by her son, Marlan A. Proctor Jr.; daughter Linda Lou Tabanao; sister Margaret Concolino; and four grandchildren. Private services were arranged by Eckerman-Heisman Funeral Service.

Beatrice Mary Clark, a resident of Burbank for more than 60 years, has died at age 81.

Mrs. Clark died Monday of heart failure, said her daughter-in-law, Pauline Clark.

Born Beatrice Mary Hughes in Ohio, she moved to Burbank in 1922, graduated from Burbank High School and raised a family there. Recently she lived in a convalescent home in Toluca Lake.

She is survived by her son, Robert Clark of Burbank; a granddaughter; four step-grandsons; two great-granddaughters; and eight step-great-grandchildren. Her husband, Jack Clark, died in 1976.

A funeral is scheduled at 10 a.m. Thursday at Eckerman-Heisman Funeral Chapel, 333 E. Magnolia Blvd. in Burbank. Burial will follow at Glen Haven Memorial Park in San Fernando.

Joseph Felix Coppo, 93, died April 17, 2003, in Burbank, California. He was born November 26, 1909, in Burbank and was a lifelong resident.
Mr. Coppo was the owner of Riverside Laundromat and Dry Cleaners in Toluca Lake for 50 years. He served as the president of the Toluca Lake Chamber of Commerce, as the honorary mayor of Toluca Lake and was a member of the Burbank Elks Lodge 1497. He was also a World War II veteran.

The visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Valley Funeral Home, 2121 W. Burbank Blvd. The funeral service is at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the American Lutheran Church, 755 N. Whitnall Hwy. The interment follows at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Hollywood Hills, California.
Mr. Coppo is survived by his wife, Lillian; daughters, Jo Ann Nelson and Christine Egerer; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grand-children.
