Glen Walter Haws, BHS 1953

Glen Walter Haws, BHS 1953

Sept. 24, 1935 — Feb. 4, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father, Glen Walter Haws, who passed away on Feb. 4, 2026, at the age of 90.

Glen was born on Sept. 24, 1935, in Burbank, California, at the home of his grandparents, to parents Glen and Maxine (Odermatt) Haws. A lifelong resident of Burbank, he took great pride in the city that shaped him. One of his favorite childhood stories was serving as paperboy to heavyweight boxing champion Jeff Jeffries — a story he never tired of telling.

He attended Burbank High School, where he met the love of his life, Beverly (Danell) Haws. After graduating in 1953, Glen enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Following boot camp at Camp Pendleton, he returned home to elope with his 17-year-old sweetheart before being deployed to Japan and Korea. In 1956, they welcomed their first son, John, while living in a trailer at Camp Pendleton.

After his honorable discharge from the Marines in 1956, Glen worked as an apprentice machinist at Mitchell Cameras in Glendale before achieving what he considered his true calling. On Sept. 1, 1957, he was hired as a firefighter for the city of Burbank — becoming a proud second-generation Burbank firefighter, following in the footsteps of his father, who joined the department in 1943.

In those early years, when firefighter pay was modest, Glen worked multiple jobs to provide for his growing family. He drove his Model A Ford pickup to local dairies, loaded it with manure, and sold it door-to-door, spreading it on lawns throughout the neighborhood. He also worked as a plasterer and painter — doing whatever it took to build a stable life for his family.

In 1959, their second son, James, was born. The following year, Glen purchased a home on Kenneth Road in Burbank, where he would live for the rest of his life. Robert was born in 1962, and their daughter Linda (Wright) in 1968, completing their family of four children.

Over his 40-year career with the Burbank Fire Department, Glen rose through the ranks, promoting to engineer and later to captain in 1973. Being a firefighter was not just his profession — it was his dream. He loved the camaraderie, the service, and the stories that came with the job. Though he retired in 1998 due to a medical condition, it was a career he never truly wanted to leave.

Glen was a storyteller at heart. He cherished sharing memories of growing up in Burbank and recounting his years on the fire department. His life was rooted in family, hard work, and dedication to his community.

He is survived by his children: John and daughter-in-law Kathy; Robert and daughter-in-law Terrie; and Linda and son-in-law Mark Wright; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and his sister, Donna Edwards. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Beverly, in 2009, and his son James in 2025. Glen’s legacy lives on in the family he built, the city he loved, and the department he proudly served.

Mary Anderson Huffman, BHS 1953

Mary Anderson Huffman

May 29, 1935 — December 6, 2025

North Logan

Mary Anderson Huffman passed away on December 6, 2025, surrounded by her family. Mary was born on May 29, 1935, to Elmer Clarence Anderson and Thelma (Chidester) Anderson in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her family moved several times during her childhood due to her father’s job transfers, including brief periods in Oregon and Delta, Utah. Her father was sent to California for a six-month assignment, which was extended and then made permanent when World War II began. The family lived for a short time in Lawndale, California, and then moved to Burbank.

Mary had a happy childhood growing up with two older brothers, Elmer Chidester and John Delmon, and a younger brother, Keith Eric. She graduated from Burbank High School in 1953.

After high school, she dreamed of attending Michigan State University to become a doctor. Unwilling to attend BYU as her parents desired, Mary attended Los Angeles City College for one semester. Her desire to begin the nursing program did not work out, so she pivoted to a short program at Burroughs Business School to learn machine calculating. Her hard work and ability to learn quickly were noticed, and she was asked to stay on as an instructor for calculators, billing, and banking machines. One day, while covering for another employee in the office, Lockheed Aircraft called looking for an employee. The position offered a pay increase and was close to her home, and she jumped at the chance—much to the chagrin of the staff at Burroughs.

Mary worked at Lockheed, first as a calculator operator doing inventory and later as secretary for the head of the aircraft wings, doors, and tubing department. About the time the company began laying off employees, her younger brother Eric graduated from high school. Her parents thought he should attend BYU, and she agreed to go at the same time to encourage him. They both started in Provo in 1958. Though she had originally planned to be a doctor, she found her political science classes fascinating and decided she should go to law school instead. Because she did not date much, she assumed she would never marry and would have a great career as an attorney in California.

Mary’s fondest memories were of her time at BYU. It was there she met her husband, John Henry Huffman of Hawthorne, Nevada. As fortune would have it, Mary roomed with John’s sister, Connie, and a former schoolmate of John’s, who found ways to bring the two together often. They enjoyed many group activities, but Mary was surprised and delighted when John asked her to the homecoming dance. Their relationship solidified into a full romance when they traveled together to her roommate’s wedding. After working in different states all summer to afford school in the fall, John and Mary were married in the Los Angeles Temple on September 1, 1959, and returned to BYU for the fall quarter.

As a newlywed, Mary worked at a small variety store for $0.75 per hour through the Christmas season. Then Provo City called to interview her for a job paying $1.25 per hour. The interviewer asked if she was pregnant, and she honestly answered that she did not know—and she was hired. Within a few weeks she discovered she was pregnant and hid her pregnancy to avoid being dismissed during her six-month probationary period. The increased pay and steady work were just enough for John to finish his bachelor’s degree.

Upon John’s graduation in 1960, the couple moved to Burbank to live in her parents’ home while they worked in England. John took a drafting job with Litten Industries and later with Burbank City. Mary delivered their first two children there, Stephanie and John David. In 1963 they moved into their first home and soon added Michael Craig to the family.

Concerned about supporting a growing family, they determined that John needed more education to advance his career. He returned to BYU in the fall of 1964 to pursue a master’s degree and PhD. John earned a stipend of $200 per month as a teaching and research assistant. In 1967, they added Jeffrey Mark to the family. Fortunately, BYU was short on teachers and hired John to teach classes, doubling his salary. This allowed John and Mary to build a house in Provo. They worked together to complete some of the construction to save money. Mary used her homemaking skills and hard work to manage the growing family and support John through periods of schooling.

The family moved back to California in 1969 for a job with ICN (International Chemical & Nuclear Corp). There, Mary had two more children, Dennis Matthew and Kathleen.

Mary was a woman of strong faith in Jesus Christ and His gospel and often felt the hand of the Lord in her life. After a layoff, John struggled to find work that would meet the needs of their family. The couple prayed and went to the temple seeking direction. When they returned home, they learned that John’s former boss from ICN had called to offer him a position as a virology researcher at Utah State University. The family moved to North Logan, Utah, in 1980—a move that proved good for the entire family and would be their final relocation.

On weekends and holidays, Mary accompanied John to the USU animal facility to help him finish his work faster. When his boss discovered she was helping, he offered her a job. With her oldest sons approaching missionary age, she knew the extra money would be a blessing. She accepted the job on the condition that she would work only during school hours and could leave at any time for her children’s programs, illnesses, or other needs. She began working with research animals, then with cell culture, and eventually moved into the office managing programs, grants, and budgets. John and Mary worked together until they retired in 1999.

Although Mary held a variety of jobs throughout her life, she regarded being a wife and mother as her true calling. She instilled faith in her children through family home evenings, prayer, and regular church attendance. Mary brought unity to the family through service. Once, when John was laid off, she and the children worked together stuffing envelopes to earn money and help the family make it through.

Family fun also figured strongly in Mary’s ability to create unity and love among her family members. She sewed costumes, made decorations, organized activities, and prepared special meals that grew into strong family traditions. As the family expanded to include in-laws and grandchildren, she continued to exemplify these values by helping with moves, cleaning, painting, and attending baptisms and recitals.

Mary was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in many callings. Her favorites were Relief Society president in the North Logan 2nd Ward and Stake Extraction Director. As Relief Society president, she loved coordinating with the bishop to serve ward members, organizing events, and leading her friends and neighbors in Christlike love. Mary’s devotion to families—both living and deceased—brought her great joy as she served as extraction director in the North Logan Green Canyon Stake for 18 years. She developed keen skills in interpreting old handwriting, understanding the nuances of historical record types, and teaching these skills to others. She completed extensive genealogical and temple work for her forebears. Thousands have received their temple ordinances through her diligence.

Mary is survived by her husband, John; her children Stephanie Burdett (Eric), David (Jennifer), Michael (Lisa), Mark (Laura), Dennis (Michelle), and Kathleen Higbee (Tom); and her brother, Keith Eric (Marilyn) Anderson. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer Clarence and Thelma (Chidester) Anderson, and her brothers, Elmer Chidester and John Delmon Anderson.

A visitation will be held on Friday December 12 at 10:00-11:30 in the North Logan 2nd Ward at 1105 E. 2100 N. A funeral for family and friends will be held at 12:00 p.m. at the same location.

James Forrest Barthell, Sr., BHS 1953

James Barthell, BHS 1953

James Forrest Barthell Sr. was born May 2, 1935 to Billie Long (Mann) and Charles Grant Barthell, Sr. in Fort Worth, TX. He passed away Sunday, April 17, 2022 in Duncan, OK at the age of 86.

As an appropriate caution, Jim has requested that there be no Witness to The Resurrection service or other memorial gathering of friends and family in his honor. He has asked for prayers for Sally and the family. Memorial gifts may be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Duncan, OK or to BOYS TOWN, by mail at P.O. Box 8000, Boys Town, NE 68010 or online at www.boystown.org/gift.

Jim grew up in southern California and in rural northeast Iowa, where he attended a one-room, all-grades country school. He finished his public education years graduating from Burbank High School in southern California in 1953.

As a young man, Jim was very active in little theater, including several 1954 productions at The California First Theater Monument in Monterey, CA. It was there that Jim developed an interest in writing and reading dramatic poetry, an interest that would remain with him for the rest of his life. He truly loved standing before an audience, reciting one of his “Stories Told in Rhyming Verse”.

Jim was a Korean War Veteran, serving in The United States Air Force Security Service, with remote site duty in pre-statehood Territory of Alaska.

In October 1956, Jim’s enlistment in the Air Force was drawing to an end. It was then that he met and fell in love with his sweetheart and life partner to be, Marcella (Sally) Kost. They were united in marriage January 6, 1957 in Burbank, CA. In 2007 they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a recommitment of vows at First Presbyterian Church in Duncan, OK with Reverend Doctor John McGarey officiating. It was a word-for-word repeat of the original 1957 ceremony.

Working life kept Jim, Sally and their two sons, Jim Jr. and Robert, on the move. He was employed in the Consumer Electronics Industry for 40 years, serving in executive officer positions with several Harman International Industries companies (JBL, Tannoy Products Ltd. in the UK, BSW in Tennessee and Mark Levinson Audio Systems in Connecticut) and with Xantech Corporation in southern California.

Moving to Duncan, OK after retiring, Jim and Sally joined The First Presbyterian Church, where they both served as officers and where they participated in many volunteer activities. Sally was a regular in the church choir, an active participant in the affairs of The Women of The Church and editor of the church newsletter.

Jim taught Sunday School and acted as the unofficial graphic arts person and photographer of church activities. His efforts included the production of the 175-page church centennial celebration book and the rewrite and reissue of a book originally written decades ago, featuring the story of the church’s stained-glass windows. During a six-year period he contributed countless photos and stories to appear in the eight-page monthly church newsletter, Faith at Work. He especially enjoyed serving The Women of The Church, assisting in their activities.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Grant Barthell Sr. and Billie Long Mann; by a brother, Charles Grant Barthell Jr.; by a sister, Mary Charlotte Barthell; and by a grown son, Robert Gene Barthell.

He is survived by his wife, Marcella Mae (Sally) Kost Barthell of the home; by a son, James Forrest Barthell Jr. and his spouse, Connie Jean Barthell, of Flower Mound, TX; by his grandson, Chris Barthell of Flower Mound, TZ; by his granddaughter, Sarah Jean Coester of Mesa, AZ; by his granddaughter and her spouse, Laura Mae and Tanner Mahan of Highland Village, TX; by his grandsons, Taylor Forrest Barthell and Dylan Gene Barthell, both of East Hampton, CT; and by five great-grandchildren, Jaymie, Cadence, Ava Belle, Liam and Ronan.

A native Californian, he graduated Burbank High School, went on the Dana College in Blair, Nebraska for his Bachelors degree before joining the Marine Corps for his tour in Korea; a service he was proud of his entire life.

After a notable career in the wire and cable industry designing harnesses and cable configurations for the aerospace industry, he came and spent the 16 years of his retirement in Lake Havasu City making new friends, bowling a perfect game and enjoying one of the places he loved best. Near both water and casinos.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, November 17th at 2:00 PM at VFW Post 9401. In lieu of flowers, send donations to VFW Post 9401.

Beloved husband and one of the best men to ever grace this earth, he is sorely missed and will be for all time.

Services were placed in the care of Lietz-Fraze Funeral Home and Crematory. Thoughts and condolences may be sent to the family at www.lietz-frazefuneralhome.com.

Patricia Ann (Heil) Cox went home to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the early morning hours of Saturday, July 15, 2017 with her daughter Cynthia Molle and good friend Kathy Boberick at her side. She was greeted by her parents Guy F. Heil and Mable E (Rummel) Heil, our beloved cousin Sallye Lou (Graves) Steele, and many others who had already made their journey home.

She spent considerable time at the Rainbow Bridge greeting all of our 4 Legged Angels (Tiny, Hansel, Heidi, Doopie, Czar, Dolly, Houston, Audi, Gretzky, Hailey, Daisy, Penny, and Axel. They were all glad to see her again and welcomed her with open hearts and paws, and many kisses.

Born in Omaha, Nebraska, on March 2, 1935, she moved to “beautiful downtown Burbank” when she was in grammar school. While attending Burbank High School, she was a member of the majorette squad. She worked in the automotive industry (dealerships and auto dismantler) until she made the move to Redlands Community Hospital. She started in Utilization Review, moved to Medical Records, back to Utilization Review as the Director, and then to Quality/Medical Staff. As a member of that department, she was the CME Coordinator, and her dedication to this program consistently earned it the highest (4 yr) accreditation. She made many life friends with the medical staff, her coworkers, and administration.

After her professional career ended, she moved to the Sun City Apple Valley Del Webb community. She was a member of the Finance and Safety Committees and regularly attended Board meetings. On the Safety Committee, she was instrumental in maintaining the Neighbor to Neighbor program, welcoming new residents. Having been through the North Park, Panorama, and Gilman Ranch fires, and the Landers earthquake, she was an avid Emergency Preparedness advocate. She successfully completed her Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training, and acquired her Disaster Service Worker (DSW) credential.
