Judy Hale Jonas, Former BHS History Teacher

Obituary for Judy Hale Jonas.

She taught at BHS for about 15 years, from 1984 on.

What A Life!

November 9, 1944 - October 18, 2025

If one’s will to live was enough to keep a body going, Judy would likely have outlived us all! She fought until the very end, however after a two-year battle with cancer, her mortal body simply wore itself out.

Judy loved her life and met each day with purpose and enthusiasm. She was our social butterfly with a feisty streak, a smart and motivated woman with an unparalleled work ethic, and an individual who deeply valued and appreciated education, music, travel, patriotism, and her faith.

If she set a goal, she achieved it.
If there was a committee, she was on it (often leading it).
If there was a social event, she was at it
(probably planning it).
If there wasn’t a trip on the books, she was drafting one, and
If she wasn’t building a new friendship, she was enhancing a previous one.

No one was a stranger to Judy for long. She had an unparallel gift for making others feel seen and important, and wanted to help each individual strive for their greatest potential. She loved her many students, colleagues, friends and family members, and would have done absolutely anything for her kids, grandkids and her husband of 58 years, Jeff.

We honor her memory and will miss her beyond measure!

Funeral services will be held the day before what would have been Judy’s 81st birthday, Saturday, November 8th, 10:00 AM at the Larkspur Chapel, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Messenger Pinnacle Scottsdale Mortuary coordinating.

Don Graham, BHS 1961

Don Graham, BHS 1961

From Don's GoFundMe Page

Dad's funeral, Retired Vet and LAPD

Hi my name is Terri, and I am Don Graham's daughter.

I am saddened to share that my daddy, Don Graham, has passed away.

From serving in the National Guard for five years, two years in Vietnam, Burbank PD, 35 years with LAPD and 20 years as an Elks lodge member. He has spent his life serving and caring for others. When he retired from LAPD after 35 years, it was to care for his sick wife until she passed away in 2011.

In 2017 he was diagnosed with bladder cancer and fought a long hard battle! This year things worsened, and the cancer spread to his kidney, lung, vertebrae and spine. The last week of his life, he was getting sicker and weaker. I had him transported to Henry Mayo Memorial Hospital, where he spent his last 5 days of his life. I was there every day with him until he took his last breath on October 7, 2022. The hardest thing I have ever done.

My dad was the most caring, giving and supportive person I have ever known. He deserves a proper burial. He did plan for this day; however, he only covered the cemetery part, not the mortuary part. I need to have $5500 for the cremation, funeral and the things that go with the funeral. I am the only child, and it makes this a difficult task to do alone.

Please, if you are able to contribute any amount, I would be most grateful. Until I am able to come with the money, Eternal Valley has promised to keep his body safe for me until I can finally lay him to rest.

Thank you for reading

Lesly Carina Ceballos-Santos, BHS 2003?

Lesly Carina Ceballos-Santos, BHS 2003?
On March 26, 2020 the Lord called one of his daughters Lesly Carina Santos (Ceballos), home. Lesly was born August 22, 1984 in Guatemala City, Guatemala. In 2001 her parents brought her to live in Burbank when she was 16 years old. On September 2019 Lesly was diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer. She fought as hard as she could to win the battle but after months of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and countless E.R. visits, her body just kept getting weaker and weaker. The tumors kept growing and spreading throughout her body, taking over all her vital organs until her body finally gave out.

Lesly, leaves behind her husband Edgar Ceballos and her 3 beautiful daughters: Analie (15), Sarah (4), and Andrea(1.5).

Lesly was a very intellectual woman who dreamed and worked hard for many years towards her bachelors degree. Lesly was enrolled at Pennsylvania State at time of her diagnoses and was due to graduate this spring with a degree on Computer and Science. Her goal was to work for Bank of America as a Cyber Security Specialist.
Lesly was a long time and loyal employee for Bank of America. She worked for them 16 years and despite of all the changes the bank had, she always adapted and embrace the changing jobs, pay cuts, relocation. She enjoyed working for the bank and learning all the ins and outs of her multiple job opportunities.

About six years ago she nearly died during a car accident where she was hospitalized and had to have emergency surgery to save her life. She has been married with Edgar Ceballos for 8 years now, who loves her dearly and supporters her in her life and career decisions. She has been working for the same employer for the past 15 years now. Prior to her diagnoses she was working full time, going to school full time to earn her bachelor’s degree online from Pennsylvania State University, while still being a great wife and mother.

She was diagnosed with Diffused Signet Ring Adenocarcionoma, a very aggressive cancer, at the young age of 35 (just turned 35 last year). After two weeks of testing and going back and forth with doctors they told her she has about 18 months left to live. Being the fighter that she is she decided to get a second doctor’s opinion. So on September 19, 2019 the other doctor confirmed the worst!!! She has stage 4 cancer, which means it has spread to her other organs. The Doctor told her there is no time to waste and needs to start chemotherapy as now. She started an aggressive chemotherapy followed soon by a surgery that will help to remove the tumor found in her stomach wall. If this tumor is NOT remove it will block the passage of food, which inevitable would lead to her death.

Lesly was a caring and loving person who enjoyed dancing Salsa and Cumbias. She enjoyed watching movies, and eating at one of her favorite restaurants, El Sauz taco shop in Glendale, CA. Her favorite thing to get from there was Mexican tortas. She loved roses and tulips. She would like you to remember her as a cheerful and loyal friend, who always had your best interest in mind. Rest In Peace, our beloved friend. Lesly Ceballos Aug 22, 1984 - Mar 26, 2020

Ground Casualty

During September 1970, the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division conducted offensive operations in their assigned area of responsibility west and south of Da Nang in Quang Nam Province, RVN. Their primary mission was to defend the Da Nang vital area military complex. At approximately 9:40 AM on September 11th, two Marines from H Company, 2/1 found a booby trap placed at a waterhole 100 yards from their platoon patrol base located eight kilometers (4.8 miles) northwest of Dien Ban. The boobytrap was an M33 grenade in a C-rations can with an 18-inch tripwire suspended across the trail. The Marines removed the boobytrap and carried it towards their patrol base when they were intercepted by a platoon sergeant, SSGT James M. Ball, who took custody of the device and moved to a nearby berm to dispose of it.

His plan was to remove the grenade from the can and throw it over the berm. The platoon radio operator and corpsman observing Ball from 40 yards away admonished him not to separate the grenade from the can because the delay mechanism may have been removed. Ignoring their warning, the grenade exploded six feet from Ball after pulling it from the can. He was critically injured, receiving fragmentation wounds to the neck, chest, abdomen, right shoulder, back, and right hip. Three other Marines nearby were also injured, one critically. They were medivacked to the 1st Medical Battalion in Da Nang. Ball required resuscitation upon arrival followed by emergency surgery. He never regained consciousness and subsequently developed bilateral (double) pneumonia. Despite massive antibiotics and assisted respiration, Ball’s condition failed to improve, and he expired at 9:25 PM on September 16, 1970.

Ball, 28, was on his third tour of Vietnam. He had been extensively trained in handling booby traps, and his unit reportedly received weekly lectures on booby trap precautions including the Viet Cong practice of removing the delay device from grenades. It was noted in the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines Command Chronology for September 1970 that the failure of Ball to follow practices emphasized in training at the cost of his life would be reiterated in future instruction.

Daughter Ashley Largey posted this on Facebook:

On this Veterans Day, I'm so sad to report that we lost my amazing dad @eddies.almanac one week ago, November 3rd, 2023 to pancreatic cancer. I can barely type this without bursting into tears, this time of year has been hard for me my entire adult life but this is the ultimate gut punch. He was a Veteran, retired LAPD, Indiana Jones Enthusiast, Saints Fanatic, Model-T Expert, Avocado Extraordinaire, Nickname Aficionado, Grill Master, Pirate. Certified Baby and Puppy Whisperer, He could fix literally anything, Knew all the words to every song by the Doors, Can quote episodes of California Gold, Loved red meat and red potato salad. Dad, you were so stubborn, funny, smart, handsome, kind, giving, strong, talented, selfless and wise. But your best quality is how much you cared about, sacrifice for, and loved your family and your country. Thank you for making @ragtymestation a mom, for giving me great siblings and a great work ethic. Thanks for teaching me how to throw a football and change a tire. Thanks for giving me the nickname "Lumpy", the shoulders of a line backer, and the hands of a power forward. Thanks for teaching me to stick to what I believe in and to never let other people's opinions sway my own. You're like, a really great father. I love you, Ed Largey, time to "break on through to the other side".

Sidebar: I am very grateful and thankful for my family, friends, all of my clients, and colleagues who helped me get him into the right doctors and take the time off to spend his last days with him.

Glen Walter Haws, BHS 1953

Glen Walter Haws, BHS 1953

Sept. 24, 1935 — Feb. 4, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father, Glen Walter Haws, who passed away on Feb. 4, 2026, at the age of 90.

Glen was born on Sept. 24, 1935, in Burbank, California, at the home of his grandparents, to parents Glen and Maxine (Odermatt) Haws. A lifelong resident of Burbank, he took great pride in the city that shaped him. One of his favorite childhood stories was serving as paperboy to heavyweight boxing champion Jeff Jeffries — a story he never tired of telling.

He attended Burbank High School, where he met the love of his life, Beverly (Danell) Haws. After graduating in 1953, Glen enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Following boot camp at Camp Pendleton, he returned home to elope with his 17-year-old sweetheart before being deployed to Japan and Korea. In 1956, they welcomed their first son, John, while living in a trailer at Camp Pendleton.

After his honorable discharge from the Marines in 1956, Glen worked as an apprentice machinist at Mitchell Cameras in Glendale before achieving what he considered his true calling. On Sept. 1, 1957, he was hired as a firefighter for the city of Burbank — becoming a proud second-generation Burbank firefighter, following in the footsteps of his father, who joined the department in 1943.

In those early years, when firefighter pay was modest, Glen worked multiple jobs to provide for his growing family. He drove his Model A Ford pickup to local dairies, loaded it with manure, and sold it door-to-door, spreading it on lawns throughout the neighborhood. He also worked as a plasterer and painter — doing whatever it took to build a stable life for his family.

In 1959, their second son, James, was born. The following year, Glen purchased a home on Kenneth Road in Burbank, where he would live for the rest of his life. Robert was born in 1962, and their daughter Linda (Wright) in 1968, completing their family of four children.

Over his 40-year career with the Burbank Fire Department, Glen rose through the ranks, promoting to engineer and later to captain in 1973. Being a firefighter was not just his profession — it was his dream. He loved the camaraderie, the service, and the stories that came with the job. Though he retired in 1998 due to a medical condition, it was a career he never truly wanted to leave.

Glen was a storyteller at heart. He cherished sharing memories of growing up in Burbank and recounting his years on the fire department. His life was rooted in family, hard work, and dedication to his community.

He is survived by his children: John and daughter-in-law Kathy; Robert and daughter-in-law Terrie; and Linda and son-in-law Mark Wright; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and his sister, Donna Edwards. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Beverly, in 2009, and his son James in 2025. Glen’s legacy lives on in the family he built, the city he loved, and the department he proudly served.
