H. Bradford (Brad) Atwood

Born Feb. 17, 1916 in Danielson, Conn., H. Bradford (Brad) Atwood
died Oct. 2. He was 86. Mr. Atwood was a founding administrator at UC Irvine. After his retirement in October 1978, as assistant chancellor emeritus, he was
elected president of the UC Irvine Retirees and Emeriti Assn. His two
former UCI department heads created a scholarship fund in his name at
the Graduate School for Management at UC Davis.

Mr. Atwood moved to Burbank in 1927, and graduated from Burbank
High School in 1933, where he earned nine letters in five sports. He
graduated from UCLA in 1938. After graduation from UCLA, he was
sports editor of the Burbank Daily Review and a stringer for the Los
Angeles Times while doing play-by-play announcing of college and high
school football games.

Mr. Atwood moved on to become the public relations director of the
Hollywood Stars Baseball Club in 1948 and 1949. He then took a job as
a public relations executive with Southern Pacific from 1950 to 1963.
During this period he was president of the Los Angeles Chapter Public
Relations Society of America and president of the Catholic Press
Council of Southern California. He served on public relations
advisory councils for the University of Southern California,
Occidental College and Queen of Angels Hospital. He was elected
president of the Downtown Los Angeles Kiwanis Club and a member of
the Jonathan Club.

Mr. Atwood is survived by his wife of 57 years, Georgia of Laguna
Beach; a daughter Gale in Corona del Mar; and sons Todd in San
Clemente and Mark in San Diego.

Services were graveside at Pacific View Memorial Park in Corona
del Mar. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Brad
Atwood Scholarship Fund, c/o UC Davis Foundation, UC Davis, 1 Shields
Ave., Davis, Calif., 95616.

Ralph Walroth, BHS 1933

Our beloved father, Ralph Walroth passed away in the early morning hours of July 22, 2014 at his home in Glendale following a courageous battle with cancer, he was 98.

He was born January 17, 1916 in Omaha, Nebraska the son of Ernest and Notia Walroth. Ralph is preceded in death by his parents, first wife Virginia (Lester) and second wife Eileen (Rogers).

The Walroth's moved to Burbank, California in 1923. Ralph attended Burbank High School and graduated in 1933. He then enrolled at Glendale Junior College, earning a degree in Business Administration. He was also very active in the YMCA, Junior Chamber of Commerce and especially involved in the First Presbyterian Church of Burbank - where he was a member for 86 years. In 1937 he signed on with Lockheed Aircraft and worked there for the next 41 years!

After retiring from Lockheed he began working part time at the main Glendale Library and has worked there for 31 years until his passing, and was the oldest employee of the City of Glendale.

Ralph had four children with his first wife Virginia. From 1960-1965 he raised his four children as a single Dad until he married Eileen in 1965. When all the children were grown and out of the house Ralph and Eileen moved to Chevy Chase Canyon in Glendale where they lived their lives to the fullest! Golfing, traveling and time with family filled their calendars. After Eileen's passing in 2010, Ralph moved to Scholl Canyon Estates, in Glendale.

 Ralph is survived by his children, Betty Jo Mac Caughtry (Dave), Terry Walroth (Cindy), Nancy Eke (Zoltan), and Rick Walroth (Sue); and stepdaughters, Pat Grigsby (John) and Connie Froeberg (Doug). He is also survived by his 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. There will be a Celebration of Ralph's Life on August 28, 2014 at 1:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church of Burbank, 521 East Olive Ave, Burbank, CA 91501. In lieu of flowers, Ralph requested donations to his church or a charity of your choosing.

Chester (Chet) Brown, BHS 1933?

Chester (Chet) Brown, BHS 1933? Chester (Chet) Brown passed away March, 29th 2014 at the age of 98. He was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa on Aug. 31st, 1915 to Earl and Blanche Brown. The family made their way to Burbank, California in 1923, where he and his only sibling June Francis graduated from Burbank High School. He had an auto mechanics garage in Burbank in 1940 called Chet's Automotive and built his 1st home of 2 that he would build nearby. He leased out his business to go into the Navy and served from 1942 to 1945 as a Motor Machinist Mate 1st Class where he did overhaul and maintenance on the ship's engines. He married Billie Mae Archer when he got out of the Navy and had 4 children, Michael, Kelly, Stacey and Perry. He had a love of fishing and boats and bought his first boat the "Dead Battery" in his mid-twenties. It was 22 ft. long. The next boat he bought was the "Pronto", a 30 ft. Chris Craft that could reach a speed of 40 knots an hour. He started a charter business giving high speed boat rides in Long Beach. In 1952 he launched a lifelong boat building career with the "Bimiche". It was 35' long, built of steel, and used to start his first commercial sport fishing business. He built the boat with longitudinal framing and unique design features not seen at that time. It had a wide beam and a live bait well both being unusual for that time. He hauled passengers out of Long Beach and Wilmington. In 1954 he built the 40ft. "Reville" also using a new method of construction. He designed the hull and it was one of the first boats to be built that size out of laminated plywood with longitudinal framing and fiberglass. Also a commercial sport fishing boat the laminated plywood technique was stronger, lighter, faster and innovative for the time. He began a trend that other boat builders would soon follow. He moved his family to San Pedro to be closer to his sport fishing business and built his 2nd home there for his family. By 1956 he had tired of hauling passengers and sold his boat. He also sold his house in San Pedro and moved his family into an apartment so he could rent space to start building a 40 ft. sailboat the "Destiny". Again he used a new method in wood construction called the strip planked method. During this time he worked as a marine mechanic for Marine Engine Service. Chet and Billie had a dream of moving to Hawaii and 3 years after starting the "Destiny" he took Billie, Michael, Kelly, a navigator and crew man and sailed to the Hawaiian Islands. Upon reaching Hawaii he sent for his 2 youngest daughters, Stacey and Perry to join them. Chet and his family lived on their boat in the Alawai Yacht Harbor in Honolulu before moving to a house in Kaneohe. While in Hawaii he worked for the Hawaiian Extruders, a plastic products manufacturer. He sold the "Destiny" in 1960 and relocated his family to Santa Barbara. He soon had a job working for Lindwall Boat Works and bought a new 2 bdrm home in Goleta and immediately converted the 2 car garage into 2 extra bedrooms with an added garage. He then built another boat named the "Euekai". It was 25 ft. long and built with recreation in mind. It was built with the same laminated plywood technique as the "Reville". He soon sold that boat and in 1962 started work on a 52 ft steel commercial fishing boat named the "Dawn Star". It was reportedly the largest steel boat built in Santa Barbara up to that time. He worked for Santa Barbara Yachts as a marine mechanic during this time. It launched in 1964 and he and his family became some of the first live-aboard in the Santa Barbara Harbor. It was also during this time that he started another business named Service Afloat that he operated off of the "Dawn Star" in the Santa Barbara Harbor. He assisted other boat owners with general and mechanical repairs. In 1968 he took the "Dawn Star" along with his son out for her first albacore fishing season. In 1968 the Atomic Energy Commission chartered the "Dawn Star" for research in the Johnston Atoll, 800 miles southwest of Hawaii. He took his wife Billie, son Mike, Stacey, Perry and his sister June and 12 days later delivered the boat to Hawaii where the charter began. The family vacationed in Hawaii until the boat returned from it's charter. In 1969 he took the "Dawn Star" to work in the Gulf of Alaska. The boat was under contract with General Oceanographics and he outfitted the boat to carry their 15 ft. mini submarine named the "Nekton". They were making a subsea survey of the gulf's geologic features for 4 different oil companies. He sold the "Dawn Star" to General Oceanographics by year's end. Chet then started building another boat named the "Archer" in 1970 and launched it in 1973. It was 63 ft. long. It was laminated plywood and built at the bottom of Santa Barbara St. He fished albacore with it until 1975 when he decided to sell it. His son Mike had already begun building his own steel commercial fishing boats when Chet went to work for him. He would help Mike finish his boat the 65 ft. "Wendy". He worked on the interior, engines and generators and helped fit it with drag gear. He fished with Mike and his wife Paulette on their boat until 1978. Chet also helped Michael build his next boat the "Mikette" in Oxnard from 1978 to 1980. It was in1982 that he took a break and bought a Rotor Way Helicopter kit and proceeded to make a helicopter and trailer that he would work on for the next 2 years. He sold it after completion. He also helped Mike build another boat, the 124 ft. "Kami M." in Anacortes, Wa. from 1989-1991. He then helped rebuild and repower another boat (also named the Kami M.) from 1991-1992. He went on to help his son again rebuilding the "Wendy Sea" (a boat Mike bought in Nova Scotia) and by helping him install refrigeration and trolling polls. He spent his later years between Washington State, Ventura and Santa Barbara. Chet pursued his passion throughout his life and will always be remembered for his humor, honesty, integrity, ability to teach and mentor and his ability to start a job and stay with it until completion. He will be greatly missed. Aloha Chet Brown is survived by his sister June Francis, His 4 children, Michael Brown (Paulette), Kelly Rangel, Stacey Brown and Perry Adameck (David). His 6 grandchildren, Tracey Cruz (Alex), Billy Rangel (Brandy Sanchez), Wendy Brown, Kami Jennings, Aprile Hill (Bill), Matthew and Shelby Adameck. His great grandchildren, Jordan Hill, Akeila Garcia-Hill, Bella and Lucas Cruz. He was preceded in death by his wife Billie Brown, Marie Hartman (long term relationship) and Ada Schmidt (long term relationship) and 1 grandchild, Tanner Adameck. Chet's Family would like to thank the caregivers Mary Reese-Upton, Christy Harter, Josie Eulin, Kathy Abramovitz, John Shires, Rafael Lopez and Linda Trujillo for their compassionate care. The family would also like to thank the staff at Samarkand and Mission Villa. Donations can be made to Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice Care of Santa Barbara. A Veteran's Service was held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills, April 5th, followed by a Celebration of Life at Craig Brooker's home in Santa Barbara.

EUGENE (MADRID) TAUTIMES November 29, 1916 - April 4, 2013 Beloved father of Mary Jane Muro, Elizabeth Starr, Lydia Ruiz, Anita Joyner and devoted son, Eugene Frank Tautimes. Adored grandfather of 11, great grandfather of 18 and great great grandfather of one. Preceded in death by his faithful wife, Isabel Tresierras Tautimes and is survived by half-sisters, Carrmen Madrid Ortiz and Margaret Madrid.

Gene was a longtime resident of Burbank, graduate of Burbank High School , Veteran of WWII, and member of American Legion Post 581. He was the retired owner of Twin Star Disposal Company. A kind and gentle man with a great sense of humor and tremendous smile, he will be missed by all who ever knew and loved him.

The graveside service for Emma Howell will be held today, Tuesday, at 3:00 pm at Memory Gardens Memorial Park with Pastor John Vondoloski of Liberty Baptist Church in White City, officiating.


Mrs. Howell, 90, of Medford, died Saturday, June 3, 2006. She was born May 3, 1916 in Monroe, Mich. to Milo and Asenath Westgate. On Oct. 16, 1938 in Brazil, Ind., she married Hillary A. Howell, who preceded her in death in 2005.


She graduated from Burbank High School, class of 1933, in Calif. and later from Cox Commercial College in Tucson, Ariz. In 1940 her husband entered the ministry and the undertaking became a big part of her life. She was active in various departments of church life. After her husband retired, they relocated to the Rogue Valley in 1978. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church, where she had been very active.

Survivors include: three sons, Paul L. Howell, Medford; Hillary A. Howell Jr. and David M. Howell, both of Tucson, Ariz.; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Three sisters, Gladys Greer, Celestine Adkins and Genevieve Awtrey, precede her in death.

Bill returned home to his Heavenly Father on May 12, 1999 in Bountiful, UT. He had just turned 84.


He was born To William Henry and Charlotte Elizabeth Emmett on April 17, 1915 in Taber Alberta, Canada. He attended Taber Elementary and Burbank High School in Southern California. He also graduated from Brigham Young University in Elementary Education with a minor in Political Science.


He served in the Canadian Forces in Canada and England. He married his eternal sweetheart, Gwyneth Mable Jones on July 23, 1949 in the Cardston Alberta Temple. Together they had eight children and raised seven. Dad taught school for 21 years. After retirement, he became self-employed. He had a very strong testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and loved his savior. He was a very active member of the LDS Church and served in the Salt Lake Temple for 15 years. Dad had a very strong passion for politics, and was always involved in political affairs. He was a very hard worker.


Bill is preceded in death by his parents, and an infant son David Joseph. He is survived by is wife, Gwyneth, of Bountiful, UT; four sons and three daughters, Charlotte Jensen, Mountain View, WY; William George Emmett Jr. (Adriann), Bountiful, UT; John Emmett, Salt Lake; Phyllis Miller (Steve), Salem, UT; Mike Emmett (Linda) Spring Valley, CA; Alice Menlove (Troy), Sandy, UT; Evan Emmett (Jennifer) Midvale, UT; also 28 grandchildren and one great-grandson.


Graveside services will be held on Saturday, May 15, 1999 at 2 p.m. at the Bountiful City Cemetery, 2020 South 200 West. Friends and family may call on Friday, May 14, 1999, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Colonial Mortuary, 2128 S. State Street.

Obituary:

Donald C. Zipfel, 72, of Glen Road, Granby, husband of Annette (Peterson) Zipfel, died Sunday (Sept. 6, 1987) at home. He was born Sept. 11, 1914 in Bakersfield, CA, and had lived in the Hartford area since 1947.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. (*He was a pilot, but we are not sure what kind of aircraft he flew). He was employed as surplus property administrator for Hamilton Standard for several years prior to his retirement in 1984 and had formerly worked for Transocean Airlines, serving as president of flight enterprises. He was a member of the Euclid Masonic Lodge No. 109, Windsor Locks.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Donald Peter Zipfel of Worcester, Mass; two daughters, Jacquelyn Sue Brown of Simsbury and Carolyn Desmond of Granby, A brother, Rowen D. Zipfel of Burbank, California, a sister, Patricia D. Goodman of Grants Pass, Oregon and three grandchildren.

Memorial funeral services will be Thursday, 2 p.m. at the South Congregational Church, 242 Salmon Brook Road, Granby, with Rev. Gordie Campbell officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of family. There will be no calling hours.

Frances "Fran" Roth Ziegler, 95, of Albany peacefully passed away Sunday evening November 28, 2010.

Fran was born March 18, 1915, in Albany, the daughter of William and Anna B. (Roth) Whitaker. As a young girl, Fran moved with her family to California, where she graduated from Burbank High School and acquired her associate degree from Glendale Community College.

She met Ernest Ziegler and they married on Aug. 24, 1935, in Vancouver, Wash. Fran attended and graduated from cosmetology college in Salem. She worked at a few salons, then opened her own shop. Fran managed the Pop's Café, now known as Pop's Branding Iron, after managing Tops Café.

Fran attended the Albany Presbyterian Church, and was involved in the Al Kader Shriners and the Shriners Hospital in Portland. She was a member of the Elks lodge, the Eagles lodge, American Legion Post 10, Order of the Eastern Star, the Albany Gleaners and the Daughters of the Nile.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ernest; and sisters Viola, Elma, Virginia, Margaret and Beverly. Survivors include sister Doris Graupensperger and her husband, George, of Albany; a "special sisty," Leona Schrock of Albany; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and close friends.

Viewing will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Fisher Funeral Home. A memorial service is set for 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. It is suggested memorial contributions be made to the Shriner Children's Hospital in care of Fisher Funeral Home, 306 Washington St. S.W., Albany, OR 97321.

Andra William Luttge died October 9, 2004, in Burbank. He was 89.

He was born in Burbank in 1915. He attended Burbank schools and married Ruth I. Kendig in 1936. He worked for Gladding McBean for 46 years.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth, his daughter, Andrea (John) Heintz, and son Wayne Luttge of Santa Rosa, California; four grandchildren, Craig and Steven Heintz and Douglas and Daniel Luttge; and great-grandaughters, Samantha Heintz and Emma Luttge.

No memorial services are being planned.

Dorothy Melvina Maxham, 92, entered eternal life January 2, 2009, at home of her daughter Linda in Bend, Oregon. Born May 21, 1916 in Muncie, Indiana, she and her sister came to California and lived in Roscoe - now Sun Valley, California in their teens. She attended Burbank High School. After graduating, she met her future husband Ben. They lived in Burbank where they raised two daughters. In 1971 they moved to Big Bear to help their daughter linda and her husband Glenn operate the Boulder Bay Market. She and her husband Ben were active in the community and were members for many years of the Big Bear Baptist church.

She is survivied by her two daughters, Linda of Bend, Orgon, and Joan of Issaquah, Washinton, and nephew Ray Proctor of Big Bear Lake and Phoenix, Arizona. Funeral services were held at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Hollywood, California.
