Richard Bouton Keysor, BHS 1946

Former Santa Clarita Man Of The Year Richard Keysor Dies
Posted by: KHTS Santa Clarita News May 23, 2020

Richard “Dick” Keysor, a local business leader, philanthropist, and 1989 Santa Clarita Man of the Year, passed away peacefully at his Santa Clarita home at the age of 91 Wednesday, May 20, 2020.

Dick was born in Salt Lake City, Utah and was 16 when his family moved to Burbank, CA where his father, James “Bud” Keysor, started his own recording vinyl manufacturing business, later known as Keysor-Century Corporation.
Dick started working in the family business as a teenager and graduated from Burbank High School. Afterward, at age 19 he served for 2 years as a young church missionary in Hawaii and always had a soft spot for the people and culture of Polynesia. He attended college at UCLA and the University of Utah and received his B.S. in Business Management.

In 1954, he met the love of his life and married Arlene Meyer of Smithfield Utah, and shortly thereafter served his country as a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force during the Korean War at McChord Field in Tacoma, Washington where his first two children were born.

After being released from the Air Force in 1956, he returned to the San Fernando Valley. In 1957, he helped arrange the move of Keysor-Century Corporation from the San Fernando Valley to Saugus. Eight years later in 1965, Dick moved his family, now three girls and two boys, to the Santa Clarita Valley. He worked in various executive capacities such as President and CEO with Keysor-Century Corporation until it closed in 2002.

Endless community service and philanthropy were his proud contributions to Santa Clarita. He was a founding Member of the Board of Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital. He also served as Foundation Chairman of the hospital for 2 years, fund raising and initiating a program that financed and developed an adult day health care center at the hospital.

Dick also served as Area Chairman of the United Way Santa Clarita campaign, was Hart District Chairman of the Boy Scouts of America, Board member of the Michael Hoefflin Foundation, and served as a Trustee for 12 years on the Sulphur Springs School District board.

Always persevering and volunteering, Dick was a long-time member of the board of the SCV Boys & Girls Club where he served as President of the Board and in 1979 was Chairman of the Boys & Girls Club Auction, where he set fund-raising records.
Dick has been an owner and investor in many companies, including his children’s entrepreneurial ventures, and has served on many boards. He was a Founding Director of Valencia National Bank which was eventually acquired by Union Bank.
Dick and his wife Arlene were recipients of the Sulphur Springs School District PTA Founders’ Award. In 1987, he was nominated for the Southern California National “Philanthropist of the Year” award for having donated more than 25,000 hours of community service.

Always a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Dick served as a Bishop twice. He continually served the Lord in many church capacities his entire life including Sunday School Teacher, Area Youth Leader, and High Councilman, and led many service projects. He had a beautiful tenor voice and sang in the church choir with Arlene as the organist. He had a natural gift for art and loved sports.

When his youngest daughter was on the track program at Canyon High School, Dick qualified himself in track technique and volunteered as an assistant track coach. He became a “father figure” to many of the students and encouraged them to achieve their goals, resulting in their setting some school records. Undaunted by age or health challenges, he even attended his family’s athletic, church and academic events until earlier this year.

Dick and Arlene just celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on May 5, and are the parents of nine children, Stephen, Claudia, Kari, Jenny, David, Lisa, Colleen, Stacy and Christine. All of the children attended Sulphur Springs Elementary School, and
Canyon High School, and all are graduates of Brigham Young University. Dick and Arlene have 33 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. His parents James and Bernice Keysor (deceased), brothers Jim (deceased) and Robert have been residents of Santa Clarita Valley, and his sisters, Carolyn Hill and Kathy Kellar, still reside in SCV.

Dick was loved by his family, friends, church, and community and this compassionate man will be greatly missed. Private graveside services will be held at Eternal Valley Mortuary on May 30, 2020.

Paul Alexander Holmquist, BHS 1960

Paul Alexander Holmquist, BHS 1960
July 22, 1942-February 5, 2020

Paul Holmquist passed away February 5, 2020, after a decline in health following the death of his wife, Bette Isis Baker Holmquist, on June 20, 2019. The two had been married for 29 years.

Paul graduated from Burbank High School in 1960. Deciding he didn't want to become a career "grease monkey" (he spent his teenage years working at his father's Texaco gas/service station in North Hollywood), he enrolled at Los Angeles Valley College, taking courses in engineering and art. He then transferred to Art Center College of Design, where he earned a bachelor's degree in communication arts/graphic design in 1968.

Paul worked at various graphic design firms throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including Laurence Deutsch Design in Hollywood, where he was part of the team to design the first typographic logo for Toyota and the Honda Power Equipment logo. He joined Walt Disney Imagineering in the early 1990s following his marriage to Bette, a Disney animation artist (Lion King, Little Mermaid, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Beauty and the Beast) and horsewoman, who rode her beloved Andalusian horse, Afamado II, in multiple Rose Parades and dressage events. While at Imagineering, Paul designed large- and small-scale signage for Disney's theme parks, stained glass windows (Euro Disney train station and the Burbank Animation building parking structure), and (due to his talent as an engineer and mechanic) ride cars, park sculptures, and the Disneyland Toontown population counter.

Paul retired from Disney in 2009, moving with Bette and their horse to the Sierra foothills south of Yosemite. He kept busy by supporting the local Kiwanis Club with graphic design expertise, tinkering with his vintage car collection, designing a children's reading room for the town library, and successfully convincing the annual local car show to allow foreign car entries.

Paul is survived by his son Paul (BHS 1985; wife Linda Swanson) and daughter Kari (BHS 1986, partner David Wallace) from his previous marriage to Susan Bush (BHS 1964, now of Paris, France), granddaughter Chloe, sisters Karin Kane and Elsa LaBaw, brother-in-law Pete Baker (wife Cathy), and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends, all of whom miss his kind spirit, love of puns, and endless knowledge of and enthusiasm for how things work.

It was posted on Facebook that Larry Alan Ehrlich, BHS 1969 passed away on January 22, 2020. Larry graduated from Burbank High School in 1969 and he was a member of the track team, enjoyed surfing, writing poetry and music,

This is from a Go Fund Me page for Larry's son Kolby

On Jan 22, 2020, our 7 year old cousin Kolby lost his father Larry suddenly and unexpectedly. Larry was a single father raising Kolby. Larry and Kolby were attached at the hip. Larry devoted all his time to Kolby. He gave him all that he had to give right down to taking him upstairs for bed with his last breath. Although Larry did not have much in finances to leave behind for Kolby, Larry gave him the most important thing...Love the greatest of all things.

Larry will be missed dearly.

Kolby is a smart young boy, advanced for his age and has a very bright future ahead of him largely due to Larry's constant involvement.

If you would like to contribute to this fund for Kolby it will be used to help with some of Kolby's immediate needs and for his future.

Lastly, we thank God our Father in Heaven who loves his child Kolby and who is always watching over him. For those of us here on Earth who love Kolby we will also watch over him and we will watch how God will take this heartbreaking situation and make it something good because God is good.

We thank you for your consideration to donate. May you and your families be blessed.

Aphrodite Dimitra Papanikolas, BHS 1996

This was posted on Facebook that Aphrodite Dimitra Papanikolas, BHS 1996 passed away on September 10, 2019 after a battle with 3B Cervical Cancer. Aphrodite posted this on her Facebook page in 2018:

So I guess it's time I share my news with everyone.
At the beginning of the summer in June 2018 I was diagnosed with CERVICAL CANCER.
All summer I have been undergoing test after test, scan after scan....4 months later now October 2014 I know nothing more except the news I got from my oncologist last Monday, I was informed that the type of Cancer I have is NOT aggressive, but the cervix which is now the Tumor is too large, making it non-operable. They have not still told me which stage I'm in but they were not giving me any hope either.

I never thought this could happen to me. My life is barely starting, I have 2 small young kids Bella who is 7 & Dimitri who is 5. Those three words: " you have cancer" are the most scariest words I've ever heard. The doctors are not giving me any options other then chemo and Radiation....two treatments that I want to avoid.

I'm scared, honestly I'm freaking out on the inside...over last couple months I've been staying positive but as each day goes by and no treatment has been started, I worry more. I don't understand what the delay is , why the doctors are taking so long to do something. They refuse to operate, refusing to give me hysterectomy telling me it's not possible. Doesn't make sense, they can remove a baby the size of watermelon through C-section but removing something a little bigger in golf ball they can't?? How does that make sense. ...

I do not know what's next. I DO know that I'm about to start a new adventure fighting this dang thing.

I WILL BEAT THIS!
I WANT TO BEAT THIS!
MY KIDS NEED ME TO BEAT THIS, I am a single mom after all.

THE REASON FOR THIS POST IS I NEED HELP, I NEED MY FRIENDS! I NEED SUPPORT BECAUSE IM SCARED, I AM PHYSICALLY BEGINNING TO FEEL THE CANCER & THE PAIN IS INDESCRIBABLE. THERE ARE DAYS IM CURLED UP IN A BALL IN BED AND ALL I CAN DO IS CRY & TRY TO CONTROL THE PAIN WITH MY BREATHING ( KINDA LIKE MEDITATION ) TO LOWER THE LEVEL. OTHER DAYS I AM ABLE TO GET UP AND BE ALMOST NORMAL WITH THE HELP OF A NORCO &/OR FEW ALEVE PAIN MEDICINE.

I AM SCARED, MORE THEN WORDS CAN DESCRIBE.
I TRY TO KEEP MYSELF BUSY, MY MIND BUSY CUZ ONCE I ALLOW MY THOUGHTS , MY FEARS TO TAKE OVER , ITS OVERWHELMING, & ITS HARD TO SNAP MYSELF OUT OF IT.THERE HAVE TO BE MORE OPTIONS, ALTERNATIVES THEN JUST CHEMO AND RADIATION. THERE HAS TO BE MORE, IT CANT BE JUST THIS, I DON'T BELIEVE THAT THERE IS NO OPTION B OR C.

IF ANYONE IS A CANCER SURVIVOR, OR KNOWS ONE OR CAN JUST GIVE ME THE POSITIVE FEEDBACK, WORDS OF STRENGTH THAT I NEED TO KEEP FIGHTING I WOULD BE FOREVER INDEBTED TO EACH OF YOU!

I AM GETTING READY FOR THE HARDEST FIGHT OF MY LIFE AND I KNOW I CAN'T DO THIS ALONE, I CANT, I DON'T KNOW HOW TO DEAL WITH ALL THIS, THE STRESS, ANXIETY IS NOT HELPING ME EITHER, ITS ACTUALLY PUTTING ME, MY BODY AT RISK; the stress anxiety can cause the cancer to grow quickly and/or worse, it can spread to other surrounding organs/other parts of the body.

I NEED HELP, ANY HELP, ANYTHING IS BETTER THEN NOTHING. I HAVE BEEN KEEPING THE SECRET OF MY CANCER TO MYSELF FOR 4 MONTHS, I guess it just was hard to accept or believe this happening to me. I really wish sometimes this was all a bad dream and hoping I'm going wake up any minute now. But reality is and I have now accepted that I have this. BUT I'M NOT GOING TO LET THE CANCER HAVE ME OR MY LIFE. I RECENTLY JUST TOLD MY MOM & BROTHER (IN THE LAST COUPLE WEEKS) BECAUSE I DIDN'T WANT THEM FREAKING OUT. BUT I HAD TO ASK MY MOM TO TAKE MY KIDS BECAUSE I DON'T WANT THEM TO SEE ME DETERIORATE & SEEING ME IN PAIN LIKE YESTERDAY. I DON'T WANT THEIR LIL MINDS ; HEARTS TO WORRY OR BE SCARED FOR MOMMY. THIS NOW HAS LEFT ME QUITE LONELY.

THERE IS SO MUCH I STILL WANT TO DO IN THIS LIFE, I WANT TO WATCH MY CHILDREN GROW, I WANT MY KIDS BACK WITH ME, I WANT TO BE HEALTHY AGAIN, PAIN FREE, I WANT TO LIVE, I WANT TO FEEL NORMAL AGAIN
