Dixie Lavonne (Turner) Cargill passed away at home February 4, 2018 after a brief illness. 

She was born June 7, 1939 in Los Angeles, California to Floyd Ester Turner and Edith Lavonne Tiwater Turner. She was a loving daughter, sister, Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother who first love God and secondly her family without condition. She and Jimmie Cargill (deceased) were married July 19, 1957 in Glendale, California where their four children were born. Jean Kay (Cargill) Waller (deceased); Roy Lee Cargill, Russell Brian Cargill and Teresa Lavonne (Cargill) Spohr.

Dixie never said no to a challenge and when her grandchildren needed care she was there for them. Her loving and kind heart was huge and we each shared in the blanket of love she showered on everyone including friends. 

She is survived by her living children and grandkids Stephanie Waller, Kevin Cargill, Michael Waller, Landon Cargill and James Cargill. She was a special Mom Great Grandma to Jean Marie Lee Waller who lived with her since a baby. She loved all of her grandkids Havyn Morris, Anna, Bella, Elizabeth. Her sister Betty Jean Turner Johnsen of Palm Desert, CA. Her brother Jimmie Turner preceded her. 

Services will be Friday, February 16, 2018 at 11AM graveside, Sunset Hill Cemetery Corning, CA. a celebration of life will be held at 1PM, East Avenue Community Church, 1184 East Avenue, Chico, CA. We invite all to come celebrate the life of this incredible woman of God. The Family of Dixie.

Bill Murray, BHS 1957

Bill Murray: March 4, 1938-Dec. 21, 2024

Bill Murray was born and raised in Burbank. He attended George Washington Elementary school, John Muir Junior High and graduated from Burbank High in the class of 1957.

During his life, Bill liked to water ski on the Colorado River and sometimes race his flat bottom ski boat, ride dirt bikes all around the California deserts, halibut fish out of Marina del Rey, restore old cars and stream fish and camp in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Bill was a long-time member of the Road Kings car club and attended almost every car show. He restored three classic cars and was happy to show them off.

For many, many years he could be seen daily at the Burbank Athletic Club and Noah’s Bagels. Bill and his wife of 50 years, Dorothy, moved to the Reno, Nevada, area in July of 2024 to be closer to family.

Bill passed away at home, surrounded by his family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and mostly by those who love him. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, his daughters Terry and Andrea and his granddaughter, Hannah.

George Edward Parkhurst, 86, of Twin Falls, Idaho, passed away peacefully in his sleep while holding his wife’s hand on September 1, 2025.

Born December 14, 1938 in Glendale California, George was raised by his mother and grandmother. After graduating from Burbank High School, he went on to attend Brigham Young University, graduating with a business degree. 

George was a loving and Kind Husband to his eternal companion of 62 years, Joyce J’Deene Lindberg Parkhurst. They raised 8 children and are proud grandparents and great grandparents. George had a deep faith that motivated him throughout his life to love and serve those around him. He enjoyed all water related sports and activities, western movies and BYU football.

George is survived by his wife and all 8 of his children Jay Christian Parkhurst, Danell Parkhurst, Michael Brett Parkhurst, Joyce Parkhurst, Benjamin Albert Parkhurst, Scott Edward Parkhurst, George Matthew Parkhurst and Brady Joseph Parkhurst. He was preceded in his death by his mother, Hazel Alvina Greslie, his father, George Richard Parkhurst and his sister, Margaret Parkhurst.

Funeral services will be held Friday September 26, 2025 11am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. 229 Park Ave Twin Falls, Idaho 83301.

George’s love, service and Humor will be missed by all who knew him.

Everett Edward “Eddie” Chapman Jr. passed away on October 8, 2023 at the age of 84 in his home in Escondido after a six year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born April 8, 1939 in Toledo, Ohio to Everett and Helen Chapman, he grew up as an only child. 

At the young age of two, the family moved from Illinois to California in 1941 where he was raised in the San Fernando Valley. As a young boy Eddie enjoyed spending time outdoors camping and being a member of the Boy Scouts, where he achieved the “Order of the Arrow”. In school, Eddie found a passion for sports, playing on the basketball team his dad coached and later on the Burbank High School football team. He was a member of the Key Club, ASB Legislative Council and the Letterman’s Club. In addition, he enjoyed hanging out with friends in the Burbank “Knight Owls” Club. He was a proud Burbank Bulldog attending numerous Burbank High School alumni reunions over the years and he prioritized staying in contact with his fellow Bulldogs.

After high school graduation in 1957, Eddie began his career in the electrical trade while working for the Burbank High School District as an electrical technician. In 1960, he joined the US Army and then the Air Force Reserves, where he served his country for five years. In 1965, he married his wife Barbara and in 1971 moved to San Diego County. They settled in the outskirts of Escondido, where they raised their family on a five-acre citrus and avocado ranch.

From 1957 until his retirement in 1996 Eddie worked as an electrician, being a dedicated member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local #11 (Los Angeles) and Local #569 (San Diego). He was proud of the work done by the crews he was a part of, especially job sites including the Minuteman Missile Sites at Vandenberg Air Force Base, the Queen Mary and North Island Naval Air Station. In addition to his 36 years as an electrician and electrical estimator, he had an affinity for working with his hands in other trades shown through his many projects on the family’s ranch. From construction projects to putting in a small vineyard, he was always busy designing and implementing his next project.

Eddie was an active member of The Over the Hill Gang Car Club and other numerous car clubs in the area. He had a passion for hot rods attending as many car shows as possible, especially his favorites such as “The Streak” in Mission Bay, the Big Bear Car Run and Friday nights Cruisin’ Grand. With his outgoing personality, he enjoyed “talking shop” and connecting with all of his car buddies.

Eddie is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara Chapman, his three children, son Edward Martin Chapman and fiance Samantha Hansen, daughter Gretchen Hirschhorn, son-in-law Robert Hirschhorn, and daughter Margaret Chapman. In addition, he was blessed with four granddaughters: Katie Chapman, Samantha Hirschhorn, Morgan Hirschhorn and Jamie Chapman.

The family would like to thank Elizabeth Hospice of Escondido and the numerous caregivers that helped with his care. His family is planning a Celebration of Life for January 6th, 2024 at 12:00 pm. Eddie was cremated at his request. A private family burial will occur at the San Pasqual Cemetery in the San Pasqual Valley, Escondido. Judith Pike, 68, died Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at Henry Mayo Hospital Newhall after a yearlong battle with esophageal cancer.

Judy was born on February 1, 1940 in Peoria, Illinois and was the middle child and only girl of three children born to Lloyd and Ruby Riddle. In 1944, Judy moved with her mother and brothers to Burbank, California while her father was serving in the U. S. Army. She attended Burbank High School then married John Pike in 1961, and moved to Canyon Country where they still lived at the time of her hospitalization.

Devoted wife, mother, daughter and grandmother, Judy leaves to mourn, her husband John; her son, Steve (Christine) Pike; her daughter, Kerry; her grandson, Spencer Pike; her brothers, Ron and Terry Riddle; her uncle, Dale Riddle and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held on Sunday, August 31, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Eternal Valley Mortuary, Chapel of the Oaks, 23287 Sierra Highway, Santa Clarita. Aptos Man Killed By Car; Driver Arrested

Robert Capo, 23, of 357 Moosehead drive, Aptos, died early Sunday morning of injuries received when struck by an automobile while walking along the Santa Cruz-Watsonville freeway.

Shortly after the 2:45 o’clock accident, Edwin Asa LaVallee, a 32-year-old Fort Ord soldier from Castroville, was arrested by Watsonville police on a felony hit and run charge.

California Highway patrolmen said Capo was struck while walking toward his home from an Aptos restaurant. The accident was in the construction zone near State Park drive. 

A passing motorist, Roger Blum of Watsonville, saw what he thought was a body while driving south on the freeway. He returned, found Capo about six feet off the roadway and notified authorities.

Capo was taken to a Santa Cruz hospital by Santa Cruz Ambulance service and died approximately two hours later. Pat Kilpatric, chief deputy coroner, said death was due to massive head injuries.

CHP officers issued an alert to watch for a damaged vehicle heading south on the freeway. Within a few minutes, Watsonville Officer Robert Johnson spotted a damaged vehicle being pulled by a pickup truck in the Watsonville area. He arrested LaVallee. The pickup driver, Clifford Vasquez of Watsonville, said he stopped to help LaVallee, whose vehicle failed along the freeway in the Green Valley road area.

LaVallee posted $1050 bail and was released from the county jail early Sunday afternoon. The matter is in the hands of the district attorney for investigation and possible filing of formal charges.

Capo, a native of California, is survived by his wife, Carol. He was a second-year Cabrillo student and also worked for DaPont Construction Company. Private family interment services will be held tomorrow at Oakwood Memorial Park, under direction of Ferguson mortuary.

Other survivors of the Burbank High school graduate include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Felix Capo of Burbank; a sister, Jeryl D. DaPont of Aptos; a brother, John Capo of Burbank; and a grandmother, Mrs. Cora Hogland of Costa Mesa.

Kilpatric said the death was number 17 for the year, compared to 32 a year ago.

Marlee passed away on November 6, 2021. She was born on August 21, 1939.

Marlee and her late husband Gordon resided in Burbank, California. They opened their first jewelry store, Andrews Jewelers, in Sylmar in 1972, and later opened a second location in Canyon Country. They were active members of their community, as were their pets. Anyone visiting either store would be greeted by Marlee's dog (always a German Shepard) and a parrot or two. After Gordon's passing, she continued on in the Jewelry business and eventually met and married "Papa Gene". Marlee's true passion was dog training, and she eventually closed the jewelry store to start Dogone-it Moble Dog Training and Pet Sitting.

Marlee is survived by her dog Maxx, her three children, Sean, Stacie, and Kimberly, her son-in-law Tracy, her brother Walt and sister-in-law Helena, her sister Linda, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Roger Harkness, Gordon Andrews, and "Papa Gene" Grooms, her brother Jack, and her grandson, Michael.

A celebration of life will be held on November 16, 2021 from 4pm to 7pm at the Sierra Hills Racquet Club: 28616 Kenroy Avenue, Canyon Country 91387. Chapel services will be conducted Tuesday for Gary P. Rummell who died Friday November 20, 1970 at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena at the age of 31. Born and raised in Burbank, Mr. Rummell had resided at 1447 N. Myers.

He graduated from Burbank High School in 1957 and had been employed for 13 years by Continental Graphics Company. He was also a member of Printers Local 174. Mr. Rummell is survived by his wife, Sharon; three daughters, Lori, Anne and Susan, all of Burbank; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Rummell and in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Crawley, all of Burbank.

Visitation will continue until 9 o'clock tonight at The Valley Funeral Home, 2119 W. Burbank. Chapel services will be conducted by the Rev. J. William Bowman of St. Matthews Lutheran Church at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at The Valley Funeral Home. Interment will be at Valhalla Memorial Cemetery.

Beverly "Bev" Frances (Webb) Lindsey of Simi Valley died on Sunday, March 14, 2021 at the age of 81. Bev was born in Dallas, Texas on February 27, 1940 to visual artists Frances (Trippet) Webb and Frank Sexton Webb of Dallas. The family moved to Burbank, California in the early 1950s and her father worked as an illustrator for several advertising firms, as well as the Los Angeles Times. Bev graduated from Burbank High School in 1957, where she met and fell in love with Billy "Bill" Alvis Lindsey. They were married in 1958, and embarked on a 63-year marriage as parents of 4 and grandparents of 13.

Bev was an accomplished artist of crafts, miniatures, and fiber arts. Under the auspices of her small business, "Bev's Miniatures," she created and sold original miniature works of art for over 20 years on the national trade show circuit in addition to her work in quilting and crochet. Bev loved to travel with her husband Bill, and had an abiding love for animals, especially cats and California desert tortoises. An avid life-long reader, especially of science and speculative fiction, Bev passed her reading habit on to her children and grandchildren.

Beverly is survived by her husband Bill of Simi Valley, sister Mary Kay (Webb) Osborn of Coloma (Monte Osborn), daughter Robin Lindsey (Tom Stough) of Thousand Oaks, daughter Brook Calderon (Art Calderon) of Bakersfield, son Mark Lindsey (Beth Lindsey) of Austin, Texas, son Joshua Lindsey (Keri McIntyre) of Modesto, and 13 grandchildren. On November 21, 2019, Wallace Kendig, loving companion to Diane Green and father of two sons, William (Bill) and David, passed away at age 80. Wally will be remembered for his big smile, wide circle of friends, generous spirit, sense of humor, and a deep sense of service to his church and community. 

Wally was a third generation Californian. He was born April 8, 1939 in Glendale, CA to Melba Rogers Kendig and Howard Kendig. He graduated from Burbank High School in January, 1957. He attended Arizona State University, graduating in 1962 with a BA in marketing. While at ASU, Wally became a charter member in Sigma Chi Fraternity. He lettered in tennis and was on the Varsity tennis team. 

Wally's working career was with the J C Penny Company as a store manager. He worked ten years in Hawaii for Penny's. When he came back from Hawaii he managed three stores in California: Granada Hills, Los Altos in Long Beach, and Santa Monica. After retiring in 1998, Wally began his career in volunteer service. He belonged to the Kiwanis Club of Burbank, First Christian Church of Burbank, San Fernando Valley Historical Society, Pioneer Cemetery, Sigma Chi Fraternity, Burbank Senior Bulldogs, and Burbank Elks Club. Wally was an avid sports fan of the Oakland Raiders, Lakers, Dodgers, Kings, and ASU. 

Wally is survived by his companion/fiancé‚ of thirty years, Diane Green, and her son, Christopher Green, Wally's son, Bill, and daughter-in-law, Ani of Poulsbo, Washington, and son, David, of Alameda, California. Wally has two grandsons, Nic and wife, Amy, great granddaughter, Josette, of Portland, Oregon, and Tyler of Bellingham, Washington. Wally is also survived by his ninety year old sister, Madeline Gisel of Granada Hills, and her family. 

There will be a memorial service for Wally at Burbank First Christian Church on December 4th at 12 noon. Wally will be interred near his family at Pierce Brothers Valhalla Memorial Park in North Hollywood. Bob passed away on Monday, February 6, 2017. Bob grew up in the San Fernando Valley and after graduation from Burbank High School, joined the Air Force and became a Jet Engine Mechanic. He married his high school sweetheart Kay in 1963 and they were happily married for 53+ years. 

Besides his wife, Bob leaves two daughters, Stacy Sundstrom, husband Dave, and Tori Osterman, husband Paul, as well as four grandchildren: Kinsey and Katie Sundstrom and Eric and Shane Osterman. 

Bob had lived in the High Desert for 32 years. He built the first two Hole-N-One Donut Shops and then moved on to real estate, small manufacturing, Mail Masters Plus and, lastly, Bob'll Do It Handyman Service. Bob enjoyed golf, travel, and most of all, his family. 

There will be a celebration of life at the Mckee Home from 1:00 to 4:00 pm on February 19th. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association. A special thanks to the Staff at Sterling Commons.

Nicola Trotta, 49, died June 5, 1988 in San Juan Capistrano, California. A 1957 graduate of Burbank High School, Trotta worked as a deli manager at Ralphs Supermarket in Laguna.

He is survived by his parents, Frank and Teresa Trotta of Burbank, California; his wife, Ann; daughters, Linda, Carolyn and Patti Trotta; son, Frank Trotta; sister, Diana Paolone of Burbank; and brother, Dante Trotta. 

Graveside services were held yesterday at San Fernando Mission Cemetery, Mission Hills, California. Arrangements were handled by O'Connor of Laguna Hills Mortuary.

Dean F. White, II of Sunriver, Oregon died Sunday, March 19, 2006 of natural causes. He was 66 years old.

Dean was born August 5, 1939 in Oakland, California, the only child of Dean and Arlowyn White. At age 5, he moved to Burbank with his parents where he attended Thomas A. Edison Elementary School, John Muir Junior High School and graduated from Burbank High School in 1957. After graduation from high school, Dean attended Westminster College in Utah where he enrolled in business administration courses. He also took fire science classes from local colleges including Rio Hondo, Los Angeles Valley College, Pasadena City College, Glendale Community and Santa Ana College.

Dean also served in the United States Marine Corps from 1958 and was honorably discharged in 1964. Dean worked for his father,Dean White I, owner of Burbak Sporting Goods, for many years prior to joining the Burbank Fire Department in 1969.

Joining the Burbank Fire Department was a turning point in Dean's life. It was the start of a very distinguished and dignified career and he consistently moved upward within the ranks of the department. Starting out as a probationary firefighter, Dean was promoted to the rank of bFire Engineer in February 1973. In November 1973, he was appointed to the post of Fire Prevention Inspector and Investigator. In 1976, Dean applied, passed the required exams and was subsequently promated to Fire Captain. During his career with the fire department, Dean was also Master Recruit Instructor from 1979 to 1986 training five Recruit Classes as well as Radiological Defense Officer and Asst. Civil Defense Coordinator for the City of Burbank.

Dean retired from the Burbank Fire Department in 1992 and relocated to Sunriver where he could enjoy his other love, skiing. An avid skier and Class A racer in his younger years, Dean skied and raced downhill, giant slalom and Super G events at many of the renowned ski resorts throughout the United States, including Mammoth Mtn. (CA), Heavenly (CA,NV), Jackson Hole (WY), Sun Valley (ID), Aleyeska (AK), and many, many others. He made ski movies such as "High Skis" and "The White Search" for producer Dick Barrymore, was a member of Mammoth Mountain Ski Patrol and was also a ski instructor at Snow Valley, CA.

Dean is survived by his daughters, Tracey A. DiMeglio and son-in-law, Andy Acosta, Kristin Louise White and Tammy L. and son-in-law Jim Wilson; his son, Jason White; and grandchildren, Nicholas and Jessica Fitzgerald. Also very special to Dean was John Fitzgerald, the father of Nicholas and Jessica.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, May 20, 2006 at the Burbank Fire Department Training Center, 1845 N. Ontario St., Burbank.

Convicted killer is suspect in '97 double slaying in North Hollywood

L.A. police say DNA evidence ties a man serving time in state prison to the fatal stabbing of Nancy Boehm and her son, Shawn. Detectives allege that Nancy Boehm was involved in the sale of drugs.

Neighbors grew worried when they hadn't seen Nancy Boehm and her mentally impaired son, Shawn, walking around their North Hollywood neighborhood back in September 1997.

Their worst fears were realized when a friend discovered mother and son stabbed multiple times inside the home they had shared for more than 20 years.

The slayings went unsolved for 12 years.

On Thursday, Los Angeles Police Department detectives announced that a felon serving time in state prison was suspected of the crime. The suspect is serving time for the fatal stabbing of a woman in North Hollywood in 2001.

Boehm and her son were found stabbed and slashed to death in separate bedrooms of their Riverton Avenue home.

DNA was collected from the scene, but computer technology wasn't developed enough to quickly and effectively analyze the evidence.

Neighbors said Boehm was an assembly-line worker for General Motors until she was laid off several years before her death. Shawn Boehm, who had played basketball in the Special Olympics, was often seen riding his bike or walking along the street, neighbors said at the time.

Convicted Killer Acquitted in 1997 Murder of North Hollywood Mother and Son

A jury acquitted a man, already serving time for another murder, of killing a woman and her son in their North Hollywood home.

A jury today acquitted a convicted killer of the 1997 stabbing deaths of a woman and her mentally impaired 23-year-old son in their North Hollywood home.

Prosecutors said the killings of Nancy Boehm and her son were drug- related, telling jurors that she was selling drugs out of her home in the 5700 block of Riverton Avenue.


According to the prosecution, Rafael Martinez came to buy drugs on the night of Sept. 21, 1997, and ended up slashing and stabbing the mother and son, and argued that DNA evidence linked him to the killings.

The jury, which began deliberations Friday, returned a verdict of not guilty on both counts late this afternoon, according to the court clerk.

Martinez, 42, was already serving time in state prison for a similar 2001 killing when he was charged in 2009 with murdering the Boehms.

Jackie grew up in Burbank and attended the local schools graduating from Burbank High School with the Class of 1957. While at Burbank High, Jackie was involved in many school activities including Song Leader, Winter and Summer Executive Council, Z Club, Campus Christians, and Theater Arts and School Productions.

Jackie was married right out of high school and was a stay at home mom. Jackie passed away at home in her sleep on May 29, 2018. She had been sick for a long time. She will be missed by her family and friends. No other details at this time.

Robert E. “Bob” Dye, BHS 1957

Robert E. “Bob” Dye, February 18, 1939 to March 9, 2018 

Bob Dye was born to Walter E. Dye and Lanell M. (Preston) Dye on February 18, 1939 in Los Angeles, CA. He passed away just after his 79th birth-day at home in Payson.

Bob graduated from Burbank High School, Burbank, CA, class of 1957, where he participated in foot-ball and track. He attended University of Utah and worked at Sperry Engineering, Utah prior to marrying Nancy Stein in June of 1959. On returning to CA in early 1961 they had three children. Three years after his divorce from Nancy he married Shirley (Sutton-DeLamater) who came with two children. At marriage in July of 1975, both Bob and Shirley had custody of their children ages 3-13, so they had a blended family with five kids and interesting times ahead.

Bob was a mechanical engineer whose favorite job was working on deep space satellite dishes for Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, CA in the 1960s and 70s. Later jobs included work on auto accessories and jet aircraft cockpit redesign, until his retirement in 2003. Bob loved hunting, camping, dirt bike riding, and running, and was an Assistant Scout Master with a very active Boy Scout troop for 9 years.

Bob and Shirley moved to Payson July 2005 and Bob loved driving his Jeep, but health issues prevented him from taking many long off-road trips after awhile.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years Shirley Dye, and five children: Debbie (Dye) and Jim McTear of Bend, OR.; Gary Dye of Chandler, AZ; Jeannie (DeLamater) Price of Scottsdale, AZ; Carrie (Dye) and Mark Turnbull of Mesa, AZ and Christy (DeLamater) and Tyler Elliott of Gilbert, AZ. Bob also leaves 13 grand-children and four (almost six) great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed. Services will be held Saturday, March 24th, 11:00 a.m. at Ponderosa Bible Church, 1800 N. Beeline Hwy., Payson, 85541, Reception to follow.

Janet Lou Sampson Ryan, 78, of Madison, died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017, at King’s Daughters’ Hospital.

She was born Jan. 12, 1939, in Madison, to Arthur and Lorene Lockridge Sampson. She resided in Madison until the age of 12 when her family moved to California. She was a 1957 graduate of Burbank High School. She attended Glendale College with the goal of teaching English. She retired as a directory assistance operator from Pacific Bell Telephone Company. She moved back to Madison in 2001. She was a member of Madison Presbyterian Church and Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed reading and gardening.

She is survived by one daughter, Staci Ryan Torres of Madison; one niece; and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her father; her mother; one sister, Joyce Williams, who died in 1974; and one niece.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Madison Presbyterian Church.
Friends may call at the church Thursday from 10 a.m. until the service.

Gail Whitney Copeland, BHS 1957

Gail Whitney Copeland, BHS '57, passed away the morning of Saturday, January 12, 2013. She had first been hospitalized and diagnosed with cancer on November 21, 2011, a little less than fourteen months ago. She had endured much since then, including surgeries and cancer treatments. She was stable right now it was believed, and doing some better, as she wrote in a note on January 9 that her daughter shared. So, it was unexpected that she would pass away just three days later on January 12.

Gail Copeland worked for the Burbank Unified School District as a teacher and administrator for 43 1/2 years, from 1961 until her retirement in 2004. Her first position was as a fourth grade teacher at Thomas Jefferson Elementary in 1961, and I was in her first class in the 1961/62 school year, which was in Room 21 at Jefferson as 'Miss Whitney'. Gail attended and graduated from the University of Arizona, Tucson, and as soon as she graduated she began at Thomas Jefferson, not long after she had turned 21!

She married Doug Copeland on February 16, 1963. She passed away just over a month before their 50th wedding anniversry. The last 18 years of Gail's career with BUSD was spent as the Principal of Joaquin Miller Elementary in Burbank, at Providencia and Kenneth Rd. She was a very much loved Principal by all of her faculty over those years, as well as students and their parents.

Gail and Doug Copeland made their home in Glendale, not far from the Burbank border, and very near Miller School. Gail is survived by her husband, Doug Copeland, her devoted daughter, Chris Copeland (who is a current teacher at Thomas Jefferson in Burbank), her son and his wife, Rob and Marci Copeland, and their two children/Gail's grandchildren, Kenzie and Zach.

School to honor Gail Copeland

Joaquin Miller will rename its quad 'Copeland Courtyard' in tribute to longtime educator.

Educators at Joaquin Miller Elementary School on Friday will dedicate their quad to the late Gail Copeland, a longtime Burbank educator who served as principal of the school for 19 years.

A 1957 graduate of Burbank High, Copeland spent over 42 years as an educator with Burbank Unified, beginning as a fourth-grade teacher at Thomas Jefferson Elementary in 1961.

She worked at Bret Harte and Washington elementary schools before she began teaching at Miller in 1975 and served as the school’s principal from 1984 through 2003. After battling cancer, Copeland passed away in January of this year.

Current Miller Principal Judy Hession, who worked under Copeland as an assistant principal for six years, said she was a mentor to teachers and staff who would offer them her undivided attention, regardless of her demanding schedule.

Hession said Copeland was also a modest leader, who never wanted to take any credit for the school’s success.

“She never liked the limelight,” Hession said, adding that Copeland wouldn’t be pleased if she knew the school was honoring her and renaming its quad “Copeland Courtyard.”

“She would be not happy with me,” Hession added.

Two years after taking the principal’s position, Hession said she regularly called Copeland for her input.

Among Copeland’s best pieces of advice, she recalls, was when she told Hession that the greatest marker of a quality principal is when the school’s staff and teachers are empowered to run the school without their principal there.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better teacher than her,” Hession said. “She gave us the gift of being able to do [our] job, and trusted us to do our job and do it well.”

More than half of all of Miller’s teachers who currently work at the school were hired by Copeland, Hession said.

Among those expected to attend Friday’s dedication will be Copeland’s family, Burbank school officials and Mayor Emily Gabel-Luddy.

February 1, 1939 – June 11, 2016

Born in Los Angeles on February 1, 1939 along with her twin Brother Kenny to Robert and Elizabeth Vaughn, Carole Ann Toffel passed away peacefully at the age of 77 after a courageous battle with arthritis and cancer on June 11, 2016 in her Burbank home surrounded by her immediate family.

Carole was raised in Burbank and graduated from Burbank High School with honors in 1957. Soon afterword she married Lee Toffel and moved to Arleta, California where she would soon be the proud mother of Robert Toffel (1958), Alan Toffel (1960) and Linda Toffel (1963). She worked part time, while raising three young children, at the Talley Rand restaurant in Burbank as a waitress. She was a very active member of the PTA and supported numerous charitable organizations. Carole was dedicated mother and friend to all.

The family eventually moved back to Burbank in 1974 where Carole started a new career at Republic Federal Savings and Loan as a Bank Teller. She eventually put herself through college and rose to the rank of Bank President and held that title until she retired. Carole was heavily involved with the Burbank City of Commerce, multiple charitable organizations and was named women of the year in Burbank in 1985.

Carole's health declined in her later years due to rheumatoid arthritis and she was forced to retire earlier than she would have liked but she took this free time to do what she loved to do best, give back to the community. She spent most of her last year's spending time with family and friends, working for
the church thrift store and offering her time and home to others in need.

Carole is survived by her son Robert Toffel and his wife Annie, Alan and Tricia Toffel and Linda Young. She is also survived by her greatest joys in life, her grandchildren; Max, Ben and Charlie Toffel and Samantha Rivera and Dustin Young. She was lucky enough to enjoy her great grandchild, Dominic Rivera, born 12/30/2015, for a short while. Carole made the world a better place and our family will forever miss her smile, kindness and unconditional love.

 Funeral ceremony will be held Saturday, June 18th, at the Burbank First United Methodist Church at 700 N. Glenoaks Blvd. in Burbank at 3:30pm. Reception immediately following at 933 N. Lincoln St. in Burbank. In lieu of flowers, please don't vote for Hillary Clinton.

Joyce Carlson Glenn, BHS 1957

Joyce Carlson/Maddox/Glenn passed away due to complications from diabetes on March 13, 2015, at the age of 75, in the care of the Irvine Kaiser-Permanente Hospital. She is survived by her ex-husband Don Maddox, husband Tom Glenn, brother and sister-in-law Larry and Joy Carlson, the family of her first daughter Becky Brewer, the family of her second daughter Jennifer Maddox and the family of her son Tim Maddox. ------------------------- Joyce was born on December 26 th, 1939 in Burbank, California, to Marie Louise Carlson and Everett Carlson. She graduated from Burbank High School in 1957 and went on to successfully pursue a nursing degree from Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital. Joyce was a Critical Care Nurse at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, California, for over 20 years and retired as a hospice nurse in 2013. -------------------------

Joyce is remembered as a vivacious and spirited soul, known for her strong will and compassionate care. In her later years, Joyce traveled to Israel and Africa on medical missions, extending the experience of her years of service to the most needy in the world. She also loved to dote on her grandchildren and spend long days relaxing at the beach. ------------------------- A memorial service is planned for later this year.
