In loving memory of Mary Jo Davis, a remarkable woman whose laughter and warmth touched everyone around her. She passed away peacefully in Capistrano Beach on November 25, 2024.

Mary Josephine Hollman was born in Twin Falls, Idaho, to Olga and Frank Hollman in 1935. She was the youngest of seven children. Following the sudden passing of her father when she was 5 years old, the family moved to Glendale, California, in search of new opportunities. She attended elementary school in Glendale, went on to John Burroughs Middle School, and graduated from Burbank High School in 1954.

During her senior year of high school, she met the love of her life, Lawrence "Curly" Davis. They married on February 14, 1956, and moved into the house where they first met. Together, they welcomed their son Mark, followed by daughters Mary Lynn and Kathleen, and their youngest son Glen.

After Curly's sudden passing in 1964, Mary Jo devoted herself to raising their four children on her own with help of her supportive family. She worked various jobs to provide for them and loved taking family camping trips whenever they could. She also found joy in her hobbies, including bowling, playing cards, reading, and listening to music, among many others.

Mary Jo's legacy lives on through her six grandchildren: Leona, Gabe, Luke, Jake, Micah, and Amber, and her three great-grandchildren: Cavan, Caleb, and Jonesy. Family was always at the heart of her life, and she treasured the times they all gathered, especially during the holidays.

A funeral service will be held at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego at 1:30 pm on December 6, 2024, where Mary Jo will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, Lawrence "Curly" Thomas Davis.

William "Bill" Paul, BHS '54, passed away at home on Friday evening, July 22nd, while his wife read Bible scripture aloud, with other family members with them. He was 85. Bill had been diagnosed last December with an aggressive form of multiple myeloma cancer. He had done well with treatment for many months until about two weeks before his passing when the disease became much worse.

Bill was the oldest of three in the Paul family, with Gary (BHS '57), and Jeff (BHS '64 - deceased in 2019), his younger brothers. On September 22, 1956 Bill married Lois Becken (BHS '55) at the First Baptist Church of Burbank which was across the street from Burbank High. They were exactly two months away from their 66th wedding anniversary when Bill passed away. Bill and Lois have three children, Ken Paul (BHS '76), Julie Paul Letts (BHS '79), and Darren Paul (BHS '82). They also have 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

In 1964 Bill and Lois moved to 737 Uclan Dr. in Burbank, where they raised their family, and where they lived for the next 40 years until they moved to a new home in Santa Clarita at the end of 2004, which is where they continued to live, and where Bill passed away. Bill worked in the printing industry with Church Press in Glendale for many years. He and Lois were always active and involved with their church, First Baptist of Burbank, MacArthur Memorial Bible Church/Calvary Bible Church of Burbank for 45+ years, and Grace Baptist Church in Santa Clarita since 2005. Bill and Lois loved to travel, and had taken many extensive trips over the years, all over the world, probably to 45 or 50 countries by the end of their travels a few years ago. Bill also loved to golf, both before and after retirement. Throughout Bill's life he could always be described as a Fine Christian Gentleman.  

Because of Bill's faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ his family has the assurance that the moment he left this life he was instantly in Heaven with his Savior, for all of eternity. 

Bill Paul is survived by his wife, Lois Paul; son Ken Paul; daughter Julie Letts; son Darren Paul; granddaughter Kelsea Alcantar; grandsons Ryan, Zach, and Taylor Letts; grandsons Nathan and Matthew Paul; granddaughter Jackie Paul Spargifiore; son-in-law Mark Letts; daughter-in-law Mila Paul; great-granddaughters Averrie and Kendall; great-grandson Wyatt; brother Gary Paul; brother-in-law Don Becken (BHS '59); and many nephews and nieces and their families.

WHITE OAK — Marilyn Fretz French 85 passed away Monday, September 20, 2021. Marilyn was born in Guthrie, OK on June 21, 1936 to Meredith and Thelma DeEtte Fretz. When she was a little girl her family moved to Southern CA and then finally settled down in Burbank, CA. Marilyn graduated high school in 1954. Milton and Marilyn were self-employed in the commercial art business in Burbank before retiring to White Oak, TX in 2006 to be closer to family.

Marilyn married Milton Read French in 1958. They have two children: David Read French of Portland, OR and Regina French Mattingly of White Oak, TX.

Marilyn was preceded in death by Milton French in 2019, and a sister Francis Savene in 2020.

2 KILLED IN PLANE CRASH

INDIO, CA – Authorities are investigating a weekend plane crash that killed an ophthalmologist and his nurse as they returned from a clinic.

The victims were Dr. John R. Hushaw, 45, and Nancy June Duncan, 30, both of Palm Desert, Riverside County Coroner’s Investigator Bob Drake said. Hushaw had offices in Palm Desert and Yucca Valley and flew every weekend to the latter office, said Drake.

The bodies were recovered from Hushaw’s twin-engine Beechcraft Baron Saturday after an aircraft in the area picked up an emergency transmission, Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Keith Stinson said. Stinson said Hushaw and Ms. Duncan were returning from Yucca Valley to Bermuda Dunes Airport outside Indio when the crash occurred. They were last heard from about 1:30 p.m. Friday, when Hushaw radioed the Palm Springs airport tower that he had Bermuda Dunes in sight.

BODIES FOUND AFTER PLANE CASH

INDIO, CA – The bodies of a doctor and his nurse were found early Saturday, about 8 ½ hours after their plane crashed into the surrounding foothills Friday night, a Riverside County sheriff’s spokesman said. Dead are Dr. John R. Hushaw, the plane’s pilot, and Nancy June Duncan, 30 both of Palm Desert, said Keith Stinson. The victims and the twin-engine Beachcraft Baron were discovered at 3:30 a.m., 12 miles north of Bermuda Dunes Airport, Stinson said.

Deputies were notified of a possible plane crash at about 7:10 p.m. Friday by Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, which received a report of an emergency transmission from the plane, Stinson said. A plane from the Civil Air Patrol was dispatched to search for the plane and pinpointed the general area of the signal’s origin at about 9 p.m.

With electronic detection equipment, a ground patrol was sent into the area and eventually found the bodies. Weather conditions in the area were cloudy with a slight drizzle, Stinson said. Hushaw, 45, was an ophthalmologist with offices in Rancho Mirage and Yucca Valley. The cause of the crash was unknown and is being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration.

A memorial service was planned at 1 p.m. today at Palm Desert Community Church for Dr. John Richard Hushaw who died Friday in an airplane accident near Desert Hot Springs. A Palm Desert resident, he was 45. The Rev. Dean Miller was to officiate over the service.

A native of California, Mr. Hushaw had lived in Palm Desert for 14 years. He was employed as an ophthalmologist and eye surgeon, with practices in Rancho Mirage and Yucca Valley.

He is survived by four children, JohnD., Michael L., Christopher S., and Michelle L., all of Palm Desert; his father, Dale Hushaw of Arcadia; his mother, Hazel Hushaw of Palm Desert; one brother, Walter Hushaw of Boulder City, Nevada; and one sister, Dorothy Hekel of San Diego.

Douglas Sterling Poulson was born on November 1, 1935, in South Gate, Los Angeles County, California, to Wilford Lamar and Leona Bessie Poulson. He was the second eldest of four brothers and grew up in Burbank, California. Throughout childhood, Douglas was known for his love of sports, playing marbles, and of all things mechanical.    

After graduating from Burbank High School, Douglas was eager to get to work, and as he put it, enjoyed his new car! In 1956, he decided to devote two years of his life serving in the Gulf States mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In 1960, Douglas joined the Army National Guard and later attended Brigham Young University, pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, and worked for various aerospace companies such as Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin. From a young age, Douglas was very fond of fixing and building things. From rebuilding engines to building houses, he truly was a jack of all trades. 

Douglas loved his family and was a devoted husband and father. He was sealed to his wife Laura on August 26, 1988, in the Salt Lake City Temple, and together they have spent many years enjoying their children and traveling. 

Douglas passed away in his home on August 21, 2018, under the loving care of his wife and daughters. He was a beloved son, husband, father and grandfather. He will forever be in our hearts. He is survived by his wife, Laura Lee, daughters MariElena, Caterina (Jason) Gilzinger, Lauralie (Joseph) Bakonyi, sons Phil (Kathy), Giancarlo (Ernestina), and grandchildren, Guilianna, Douglas, Linda, Hedrian, Camilla, Sophia and Abigail.

Funeral services will be held at 10 am on Friday, August 31st, at the LDS church, 2559 E Combs Rd in San Tan Valley, Arizona. A viewing will be held for family and friends one hour prior to services. Interment will follow at San Tan Memorial Gardens.

JANUARY 30, 1937 – DECEMBER 19, 2018

On Wednesday, December 19, 2018, Dr. Paul Earl Ward passed away at the age of 81. 

Born on January 30, 1937, in Albuquerque, New Mexico to Albert and Lovera Ward, Paul is survived by his brother, Dr Bob Ward and sister, Marilyn Lovejoy. Other surviving family members include a sister-in-law, Joyce, and nieces, Shannon Lichty, Erin Symmank and Dana Ward, plus nephews Ron Lovejoy, Stephen Lovejoy and Brad Ward. 

Preceding Paul in death was his other brother, Maurice Ward, who passed away August 30, 2012, as well as siblings Albert and Loraine who died as infants. Paul’s generosity and the quality of standards he set for himself will be fondly remembered by the countless friends made during his life’s journey.

After attending Burbank High School, Paul earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington, his Masters from the University of Washington, and his Doctorate from Indiana University in 1973. After receiving his Bachelor’s Degree he served in the US Marines Corps 1958-1961, attaining the rank of Captain, and played on USMC football teams before playing for the NFL Detroit Lions 1961-1962, thus becoming the first Whitworth University graduate to play in the NFL. He went on to teach and coach at numerous colleges, and has served in the following capacities:

• Director of Education, Research & Development for Health and Tennis Corporation of America 1974-89

• Elite Athlete Coordinator, Track and Field—Men & Women Throwers 1972-84

• Exercise and Sports Performance Consultant e.g. Dallas Cowboys Biomechanics Study 1977

• Sports Scientist & author of numerous scientific articles (Biomechanics & Exercise Science)

Paul’s overwhelming passion for life and future thinking had a tremendous influence on sports, coaching and the fitness industry of America during his professional career that spanned

over 40 years. He was passionate about personal fitness and training, winning multiple Masters Olympic lifting championships. In addition, he was devoted to training and coaching many of US Olympic & Elite Track & Field athletes. Paul co-authored with his brother, Bob, a definitive and comprehensive book entitled—ENCYCLOPEDIA OF WEIGHT TRAINING—Understanding the Scientific, Theoretical and Practical Basis of Weight Training.

We will all miss Paul’s compassion, devotion, and commitment to achieving higher goals in every aspect of his life. His sense of humor, his zest for life and his Dare Devil Attitude from his youth to his later years is a trademark to be remembered and emulated by all. A passionate and committed follower of Jesus Christ, Paul’s journey to Heaven is one to be celebrated and one of only peace and joy!

Richard Eugene Fream, BHS 1954

Fream Rites Conducted In Glen Haven

Funeral services were conducted in Glen Haven Memorial Park, San Fernando, for Richard E. Fream, 23, of Las Vegas, Nevada, a former valley resident and Burbank High graduate.

Mr. Fream was born August 15, 1935, in San Fernando, and moved to Burbank in 1944 with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Fream. He graduated from Burbank High School and later attended Pierce and Valley Junior colleges and State College at Fresno. 

Besides his parents, of Las Vegas, he is survived by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. T.J. Autery of Canoga Park, and a sister, Eileen Cook, also of Las Vegas. Service for Mr. Fream, who died July 29, 1959 were conducted Saturday by the Rev. Eldred Charles of Los Angeles.

Burton L. Court, BHS 1954

Burton “Burt” L. Court passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Wednesday, November 29, 2017. Born in Burbank, California in 1935.

Burt grew up in the San Fernando Valley and attended Burbank High School graduating in 1954. Burt later moved to Upland/Rancho Cucamonga to pursue business opportunities. He owned and operated Court and Thomas, Inc. for over 30 years. He lived in Rancho Cucamonga until his passing. 

Burt looked at life as an adventure and capitalized on all that it had to offer. Whether it was racing motorcycles and go-karts in his youth, dramatically growing his chemical pump business, racing boats (he won the Long Beach to Catalina Ski Race as a driver on two separate occasions) or driving his cars fast – he loved life. 

He also had a passion for his family – he was most proud of this part of his life. In passing, Burt is survived by his daughter Pam Cummings (and husband Rick), daughter Nancy Court (and long-time boyfriend Andy Slotke) , step-son Shaun Skinner (and wife Marci), step-daughter Carrie Esparza (and husband Javier), and seven grandchildren plus one great grandchild that he did spend some time bragging about – grandchildren Mandy Adams, Heidi and Rick Cummings Jr., Ryan and Jennifer Skinner, Samuel and Catherine (“Cate”) Esparza and great granddaughter Kaylee Adams. Burt is also survived by his lady-friend Sherrie Wood. Burt was preceded in death by his wife of over 30 years Nancy Court and his two brothers Hank Court and Jim Court. 

Burt will be dearly missed by his family and many friends, but if you knew Burt - you know wherever he is – he is not doing any one thing for too long – or as he liked to say “I’m sticking to the vinyl”, he is enjoying a piece of Cinnamon Dentyne gum, going fast in whatever he is driving and most importantly of all – he won’t be late.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the City of Hope, Duarte or the Veteran’s Administration.

Former BHS teacher, Mr. Bill North, passed away yesterday, Sunday, February 24, 2019. 

Bill was in Denver, Colorado attending a friend's retirement party, when he passed away. He was on an airport bus going to the airport to come back home when he suddenly passed away. He was 82 years old. Bill grew up in the 900 block of Cornell Dr. and was a 1954 Burbank High School graduate where he was a member of the Rifle Team. 

He taught Social Studies and English at John Muir Junior High for 16 years from 1960 to 1975. He then taught Government and Economics for 21 years at BHS from 1975 to 1996 when he retired. He was also the Ceralbus advisor from 1986 to 1996. Many will remember Bill's use of "paper clips" for awards in his John Muir classes! Bill married his John Muir colleague, Mrs. Barbara Bullock, and they enjoyed many happy years together. Barbara passed away in 2005. 

Bill continued living in Burbank, and had been doing well. Just last August he purchased a new Subaru wagon. Bill and former John Muir and BHS teacher, Clyde Richards, have been close friends over all these years. This is a sad day for Burbank.

"There's not a person there who doesn't love the guy," said  Clyde Richards.

Graduation Day had come and with it the strains of "Pomp and Circumstance." In royal blue caps and gowns, Burbank High School's Class of '96 marched down from the grassy slope above the Starlight Amphitheater to take their seats. Waiting on stage were school officials, their gowns all black and serious.

There was one exception. On the day after his 60th birthday, teacher Bill North had elected to wear the blue of a graduating senior. He was, in a sense, graduating for a second time from Burbank High, retiring after more than 37 years of teaching, the last 21 at his alma mater. Before too long, Mr. North, as the students call him, would step to the dais. The students stood and cheered in his honor.

First he asked everyone to say hi to his mother, Jeanne, who had watched her boy graduate at the Starlight in 1954. "Mom and I think this is so much fun," Mr. North said, "we're going to do this every 42 years."

Mr. North, local legend, is known for his wit, kindness and a unique talent for teaching. Ask around Burbank High and the testimony becomes overwhelming. Mr. North came from the same mold as the storied Mr. Chips. He is one of those beloved teachers who routinely rise above the call of duty.

And so there was Bill North at the dais in royal blue, reflecting on how Burbank High had changed in the 42 years since his first graduation. 


And so, it was explained, there would be a presentation. To Mr. North's obvious surprise, an assistant principal stepped forward with a yellow firefighter's coat, marked with his name and the declaration that he is a No. 1 Teacher. Why a firefighter's coat? Everybody at Burbank High knows about Mr. North's fascination with firetrucks, about how he can even tell their sirens apart.


Graduation Day was, in fact, the crown of a series of events, large and small, that marked Mr. North's last few weeks.  A retirement party was held at the Castaway restaurant in May, arrangements were made for the Burbank Fire Department to chauffeur Mr. North in one of its engines. About 200 colleagues and former students roasted him in tribute.

Mr. North can remember the moment he decided to become a teacher.

"I was a senior at Burbank High, sitting in a classroom that was dingy, with a long-term sub who was just terrible. And it dawned on me. I was thinking, 'I could do better than this.' "

He went to UCLA and absorbed the latest in educational methodology. At his first job at John Muir Junior High, Principal Bob Leland monitored his first few weeks of work.


"I was busy showing him all the fancy teaching techniques I learned at UCLA. He had a troubled look on his face . . . Finally, he said to me, 'Why don't you do it the way you want?' "And that just hit me. I realized, in this business, nobody had all the answers." And so Mr. North set out to do it his way.

"Forever Young" was the theme of Burbank High's commencement. The logical question was, why had Mr. North decided to retire?

"I'm just thinking it's time to do some other things. I wanted to leave teaching before I burned out and got a little funny--funny as in peculiar, you know . . . Some of them stay just a little bit too long."

Mr. North didn't put it this way, but it seemed he wanted to be like the athlete who retires as a champion, before anyone can say he's over the hill.

Retirement, he says, will give him more time for his hobby, woodworking. But there's also some talk that he'll drop by Burbank High from time to time. He's been the yearbook advisor the last 10 years; perhaps the staff will need some help next year.

It seems to be the kind of talk that no one wants to discourage, least of all Mr. North.

For a teacher to be classified as a lovable living legend, it takes more than 37 years of effective instruction - it takes special talents. It takes an ear that can differentiate the sirens of a fire truck from a fire engine. It takes the ability to write co medic skits that skewer staff and students. It takes writing one's own textbook, but most importantly, it takes a gregarious , kind demeanor. Bill North possessed such gifts.

After his retirement in 1996 Bill was able to pursue his hobby of woodworking  where he made many things. He would sometimes stop by Burbank High for visits and in 2008 he attended the Burbank High Centennial and that is where I met Bill North at the staff get together and he allowed me to take his photo. 

Bill flew to Denver, Colorado for a friends retirement party. Bill almost cancelled his trip as he was concerned about driving in the snow and icy roads.

But he did go and the picture below of Bill was taken in Denver the day before his death and the day of his death.The other man pictured is part of the family Bill was visiting in Denver for this man’s retirement party, which Bill surprised some of them by attending. Bill made the wood base that he is holding as a retirement gift for this friend.
As word was received of his death, there has been an overwhelming of love, prayers and memories on facebook and social media from family, friends, fellow teachers and most of all his former students.

Frank G. Murphy, BHS 1954

Frank G. Murphy, age 81, of Sutherlin, Oregon, passed away Monday, September 4, 2017. He was born January 31, 1936, in Cleveland, Ohio to Francis G. and Elizabeth M. Murphy.

Frank graduated from Burbank High in 1954 and from Valley Jr. College with an AA degree in 1958. He married Aida Corona who he met in the first grade. Frank served in the US Army in Germany during the Korean Conflict. He had lived in Cleveland, Ohio, Burbank, California, Sunland, California, Grants Pass, Oregon, and for the past 10 years in Sutherlin, Oregon.

Frank worked as a Claims Adjuster for various companies for 13 years, a salesman for Sears for seven years, a driver and warehouseman for Gold River Distributors until he retired in 1998. He was a member of the Grants Pass Elks and St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Sutherlin. Frank enjoyed playing chess, working Sudoku puzzles, watching football, camping, hiking and traveling in the RV.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Aida Murphy of Sutherlin, Oregon; sons, Anthony Murphy and his wife Christine of Winchester, Tennessee, and Matthew Murphy of Lake Havasu City, Arizona; sister, Mary Murphy of Sutherlin, Oregon; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Private cremation rites have been held. A Memorial Mass will be held Wednesday, September 27, 2017, at 9:00 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Graveside services with military honors will be held Wednesday, September 27, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at Roseburg National Cemetery. Father Manuel Compos will officiate. Ralph David Fanderlik, BHS 1954

Ralph David Fanderlik, 63, died May 30, 2000, in Burbank. Mr. Fanderlik was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He was a Burbank resident for 46 years. He worked as a mechanical engineer for 20 years. An avid outdoorsman and gardener, Mr. Fanderlik was a Scout master for eight years and a member of the National Rifle Assn. for 20 years.

He is survived by his wife, Etta; sons, David and Daniel; daughter, Sheri A. Kennedy; sister, Barbara Adams; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be held at Valley Funeral Home in Burbank.

 Wallace Bowen King died Wednesday, July 12, 2017 surrounded by loved ones.

Wallace will be greatly missed by his wife, Prisca; five children and their spouses; 18 grandchildren; and his five siblings and their families.

He was the son of former Burbank Mayor - Carl M. King and Virginia King. His siblings also attended BHS and are alive and well. Larry King, Sharon Mortenson, David Foster King, Dennis King and Leon King. He was a great man who loved his family, friends and God.

Note: While at Burbank High he played football and track.

Sharon Lynne Bushman Jones, BHS 1954

Sharon Lynne Jones, 80, returned to the arms of her Heavenly Father on May 14, 2017. Sharon's strength allowed her to live a productive life filled with service to family, neighbors and church.

She was born on September 29, 1936, in Sterling, Ill., to Elwood and LaVerne Bushman. Sharon was raised in Illinois, but the family relocated to California during her high school years, where she graduated from Burbank High School. Soon after graduation, she married William Christy and they settled in Manhattan Beach, where they raised five children.

Sharon always had a strong feeling for religion and visited and studied nearly every kind of Christian church, and when missionaries knocked on her door, they answered many of her questions. She knew it was true and became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1968 Sharon and William divorced, and Sharon moved her family to Lancaster.

In 1975 Sharon met and married Fred Kellerman, and a son was added to the family. They were later divorced. Sharon worked for Boeing at Edwards Air Force Base and in 1989, moved to Tehachapi, and after being single for 15 years, she married Larry Jones in 1991, where they resided together for the past 25 years. Sharon had a variety of hobbies and talents she used to serve those around her. She loved to read, sew, do beautiful cross-stitching, bake, and research her family’s genealogy.
She served in many church callings and was an aide and volunteer at the Hospital Guild for many years. When her health required her to start "taking it easy," Larry and Sharon decided they would go on their own adventures on their motorcycle, or in their truck and camper.

Sharon is survived by her sister, Gloria Evans; son, David (Melanie) Christy; daughter, Cheryl Hunter; daughter, Janet Christy; and daughter, Diana (Jonathan) Silva; 18 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister, Marilyn Bushman; daughter, Wendy Haller; and son, Stephen Kellerman.

A visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, May 18, at 10 a.m., followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 600 Anita Drive, Tehachapi, Ca. 93561. Interment will be at the Tehachapi Eastside Cemetery. The family would like to thank ProCare Hospice, and Zoreen and her family at Evergreen Elderly Care for their loving care of our mother.

Bruce Evan Thomas, BHS 1954

August 11, 1936 ~ July 29, 2016 (age 79)

Bruce Evan Thomas was born in Pocatello, Idaho on August 11, 1936 to parents Glenn and Tessie (Hackworth) Thomas. He lived in Pocatello until relocating with his parents to Burbank, California, where he graduated from Burbank High School in 1954.

Bruce honorably served in the United States Navy during the Korean War, receiving an honorable discharge. He went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Brigham Young University.

Married to Junell Crandall in 1963, the couple moved to Los Angeles where they raised their family. Bruce worked for Hughes Aircraft for over 20 years, followed by a partnership with Sattel Technologies, where he specialized in developing and supplying long-distance telephone systems to third world countries and small communities.

An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Bruce was called to many positions in his ward and stake. He and Junell served a full-time mission in the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Mission.

With family at his side, Bruce peacefully passed away July 29, 2016 at his home in Mesa, Arizona, just 22 days after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He is survived by his wife, Junell, his children Terri, Glenn, Suzie, and Kathie, his son-in-laws, Richard and Steve, and his grandchildren, Colette and Cooper.

Graveside services will be held Friday August 5, 2016 at 10:00 am at Mountain View Cemetery, (53 West). Military Rites will be provided by the Pocatello Veterans Honor Guard. The family warmly invites friends and extended family for respects from 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at Manning-Wheatley Funeral Chapel, 510 N. 12th Ave.  

 

 

 

Sherry Madden Neary, BHS 1954

ST. IGNATIUS – Sherry Ann Neary, 80, died at her home Tuesday, July 26, 2016.

Sherry Madden Neary was born in Wenatchee, Washington on Jan. 9th, 1936 to Mack & Lola Madden. The family moved to Los Angeles, California when Sherry was 6 years old due to Sherry's need for a heart operation. Unfortunately the operation was not completely successful and Sherry was physically restricted from doing almost everything until the age of 14 when she had a second operation that was successful, giving her a whole new lease on life.

From 1951 thru 1954 she went on to attend Burbank High School in Burbank California where she joined various clubs, became a song-leader at sporting events and participated in the Schools Christian Club.

After High School Sherry attended Pepperdine University in Los Angeles, California for 3 and 1/2 years. On December 14th, 1957 she and Frank D. Neary eloped in order to be married in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the Mid-1960's in Placenta, California she joined a Catholic Church Group called the Legion of Mary. She and the group went door to door to talk to fallen away and troubled Christians. 

In the 1970's Sherry found her true calling. She advocated for and protected victims of Domestic Violence. She worked with the Prosecution and provided vital Court Testimonies that were able to protect women from any further Domestic Violence. She worked at Safe Shelters for the Homeless and at abused Mother's and Children's Shelters in Jamestown, North Dakota.

In 1998 Sherry and her husband Frank moved to St. Ignatius, Montana where both of them retired. However, Sherry felt she had a calling and a purpose for being here on the Flathead Indian Reservation. During her entire adult life, Sherry had been researching and acquiring all that was available about American Indian Tribes, Culture, Heritage, Traditions and Spirituality. She had a great love and respect for Indian People. Sherry and Frank together went to many Powwows and made many good Native American friends. Sherry and Frank both felt they were blessed by God because they were able to live in such a beautiful Valley with so many of God's beautiful people.

In 2014 Sherry was diagnosed with cancer at the bottom of her tongue. She opted to have a 1/4 of her tongue surgically removed in hopes that all the cancer was isolated there. Unfortunately that was not the case. She chose not to have another surgery, Chemo or Radiation because of the location of her cancer.

Frank wanted to share with the community that Sherry peacefully passed away at home in his arms. Sherry was and will always be the love of his life. She is resting now with our Lord and savior Jesus Christ, she is no longer suffering and she is finally free of pain.
 
Survivors of Sherry are: Her husband of 59 years, Frank D. Neary, Son Mark Neary, Son Keith Neary, Daughter Ann Hoggarth and Son John Neary, 16 Grandchildren and 12 Great-grandchildren. She is proceeded in death by her parents Mack & Lola Madden and her Daughter Karen Neary. 

Services for Sherry will begin with the Rosary on Tuesday, August 2nd at 7pm in the St. Ignatius Catholic Mission. On Wednesday, August 3rd her Funeral Mass will begin at 11am. 

Earl Kenneth Forsse, BHS 1954, creator of Teddy Ruxpin

Earl Kenneth Forsse, was born September 25, 1936 in Bellwood, Nebraska. His family moved when he was a child to Southern California. He graduated from Burbank High School and teamed up in the late 1950s with others to develop a children's TV show starring puppets. "My job on the pilot was to sculpt and cast the latex puppet characters and build the settings," Forsse said in a 1999 interview with Isaacson. Ken passed away on March 19, 2014 in Laguna Woods, California of congestive heart failure, at the age of 77.

Earl Kenneth "Ken" Forsse, was an American inventor, author, and producer who created the hit toy Teddy Ruxpin and the subsequent animated series, The Adventures of Teddy Ruxpin. After working for The Walt Disney Company, Sid and Marty Krofft Entertainment and other entertainment companies, he founded Alchemy II, Inc. One of Alchemy II's first projects was building the animatronic characters used on the television shows, Welcome to Pooh Corner and Dumbo's Circus. Forsse and his team then brought Teddy Ruxpin to the marketplace. Teddy Ruxpin became the top selling toy of 1985 and 1986 and was made by Worlds of Wonder. "1986 and 1987 were insane; you could hardly find Teddy Ruxpin in stores, it was so popular," said toy expert Jim Silver. "The slogan they used to advertise Teddy, 'A friend for life comes to life,' described aptly the friendship Teddy Ruxpin made with millions of children." Teddy Ruxpin, at a premium price of $70 that included read-along storybooks, was a hit almost from the start. Silver said it came out at a time when it was increasingly common for both parents to have jobs, cutting into time spent with the kids. "And what parent wouldn't like a teddy bear that would read along with a child?" The bear racked up an impressive $93 million in sales in a year and a spun-off daily animated TV show, "The Adventures of Teddy Ruxpin," ran for 65 episodes.

In 2005, Alchemy II made an agreement with toy manufacturer BackPack Toys to have Teddy Ruxpin back on the shelves yet again and the toy made a successful return in 2006 before eventually being discontinued again in 2010. In addition, the animated TV series was released for the first time on DVD in 2008.

Louise Ann Shetler Cultice, BHS 1954

Louise Ann Cultice (1936 - 2015)  Louise Ann Cultice was born August 3, 1936 in Elkhart, Indiana to Earl and Pearl Shetler She died at home on July 23, 2015 in Palm Springs, California. 

 She grew up in Burbank, California and graduated Burbank High School class of 1954 and remained lifelong friends with many of her classmates. She was a Queen in the Burbank Parade, 1953, sponsored by the Moose Lodge. She pursued a successful career in office management working for several large corporations, eventually meeting her husband of 38 years, Doug.

Louise and Doug permanently moved to Palm Springs in 1980 when she became a successful real estate agent for over 20 years. They were active volunteers with the Palm Springs Historical Society, the Elks Lodge in Palm Springs, VFW in Cathedral City and were involved in other civic and advocacy work. They were a "work hard, play hard" family and loved to travel and take cruises together.  

Louise is survived by a combined family of six children: Mark Cultice (Jill); Gene Collins (Vivian); Julie Tringale (Peter); Linda Cunningham (Jeffery); Tracye Woolery (Greg); Debbie Douglas (Randy); thirteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. 

A private internment will take place on Friday, Aug 7 at Forest Lawn Mortuary Park in Cathedral City, California. .

Bruce Wampler, BHS 1954 Bruce Wampler graduated at Burbank High School with the class of 1954 and passed away on February 26, 2009. He will be missed by all that knew him. No other details at this time.

Age 79, died Wednesday, February 4, 2015. She was born to the late Rose and Elias Deeb in Kooba, Lebanon. Libby graduated from Burbank High School and excelled in the Dental Assisting Program she attended.

She was married to Don Jacob and had a son, Derek. Both predeceased her. She was a loving sister and aunt and admired and loved by everyone who knew her. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to the St. Michaels Antiochian Orthodox Church. VALLEY FUNERAL HOME
