She is survived by sons, Larry and his wife, Patti of Santa Rosa, California, Lonney and his wife, Wilda Pauls, of Eugene, Oregon; daughter, Barbara Louden of Auburn, California; eleven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren; sister, Margaret Stitcher of El Cajon, California; brother, Mel Thrasher and his wife Joyce of Ventura, California and sister, Joyce Leach and her husband, Leonard of Grants Pass, Oregon.

Funeral Services will be held at the Full Gospel Tabernacle, Reedley on Friday, June 22, 2001, at 10:30 A.M. Wesley Ling Is Killed in Car Accident

Funeral services are pending today for Wesley Greer Ling, 38, advertising man of Burbank who was killed early yesterday when his car crashed into a bridge railing on Victory Blvd. east of Ethel Ave. Ling was the son of Harvey Ling, Sr., former owner and publisher of the Burbank Daily Review, and Mrs. Ling. The Lings now reside in Carlsbad, California.

Witnesses told police his car was traveling close to the curb when it reached a point where the street narrowed down. The vehicle then struck a wooden barricade, a reflector pole, chain link fence and came to rest on the end of a street railing that crosses the bridge. He suffered a crushed chest, compound fracture of the leg and other injuries.

Wesley Ling was a former Air Force pilot in World War II.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his widow, Eva, who was in Wisconsin at the time of the accident; two children, Marcie and Chris; three brothers and a sister. Max M.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday for former Burbank resident John E. Morris, who died Thursday December 18, 1969 in a Sylmar hospital. He was born on June 23, 1917.
Services will be at the Country Chapel at Pierce Bros Mortuary, 10621 Victory in North Hollywood. Interment  will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 pm today and 8 am to 9 pm Sunday.

Born in St. Louis, Mr. Morris lived in this area for about 40 years and in Burbank for 30 years, until moving to Sylmar. He was a 1936 graduate of Burbank High School and was employed as an upholsterer.

He is survived by his wife, Rachel; three brothers, Wesley of Burbank, Carl of Sun Valley and Oliver of North Hollywood; one sister, Edna of Long Beach; two daughters, Mrs. Pat Peterson and Mrs. Sherrie Bernheimer, both of Sylmar; one son, Richard of Sylmar; and two grandchildren.

A friend of mine Herbert "Herb" Lewis Hinthorne, Burbank High School, Class of 1936 and a member of the Senior Bulldogs passed away at age 91 last Sunday, November 29, 2009. His daughter Nancy, BHS 1959 said her father died suddenly and had been in fairly good health and three weeks before his death had played a round of golf.

In a book Burbank History it says this about Herbert Hinthorne: "Burbank's senior fireman Captain Herbert Hinthorne retired in July, 1974, after 36 years on the job. The captain always carried a nickel in his pocket, used in the old days to make telephone calls for more fire units."

Herb knew my uncle as they were firefighters together until my uncle moved away, but Herb stayed in Burbank and fought many fires over the years. Herb's daughter Nancy was my sister's best friend in high school. Herb is survived by his wife Agnes, daughters, Nancy and Joyce and their families. Joyce also went to Burbank High.

He will be missed by all who knew and loved him!

Early last Friday morning, May 2, 2014, Jane went HOME TO HEAVEN, just 25 days before her 96th birthday. Everyone who ever knew Jane realized what a loving, dedicated, and wonderful Christian lady she always was. A true LADY in every sense. Jane Lively Teague, BHS '36, is survived by her three children, Jack Teague, BHS '59, Jim Teague, BHS '63, and Janet Teague, BHS '68, four grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. Her husband of 58 years, Jasper Teague, passed away in January 1998.

Annabelle Dorothy Fisher Settle, BHS 1936

Annabelle Dorothy (Fisher) Settle, 94, of Jacksonville, Ore. passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2014 after a short illness. Annabelle was born in Boyle Heights, Calif., one of two children of Malcolm and Dorothy Fisher. She moved with her parents to Burbank, Calif. as a child and graduated from Burbank High School in 1936. She married Mark Settle in February 1939. They lived in Burbank until 1966 when they moved to the Applegate Valley and later to Jacksonville, Ore. They were parents to four children and 22 foster children. Annabelle was interested in hand crafts and family activities. She was happiest when welcoming and rocking each new grandchild. Survivors include her children, Nancy (Bruce) Sturm, Kathy (Hasso) Hering, and Margie Smoak; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren; plus numerous caring nieces and nephews, and loving caregivers who helped her after her husband's death. She was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years; son, Dan; her parents; and brother, Bud Fisher. At Mrs. Settle's request, there will be no funeral service. Family will gather at a later date for a time of remembrance. The family would like to thank the Jacksonville Oregon Volunteer Fire Department for the assistance provided. REV. GEORGE W. SOUTHWICK, D.D. 1918-2006 Longtime Santa Maria resident Rev. George W. Southwick, D.D., 87, passed into glory at his home on January 21, 2006. Rev. Southwick was born December 1, 1918, in Lakeland, Florida. When he was a young boy he and his family moved to Burbank, California. He was always interested in sports and was a star football player on the Burbank High School football team, graduating in 1936. George attended Life Bible College, Los Angeles, after high school and received his divinity ordination in the Foursquare denomination. He further went on to three more ordinations in the Assemblies of God, Apostolic Holiness and Whosoever Will denominations. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity in the late 90's in Jacksonville, Florida. He has lived a life of service in the ministry pasturing several churches and preaching at many, many locations all over the country and also spending time on evangelistic tours, which he truly enjoyed. He and his wife, Leona, began The Bible Educator Ministry, Inc. in 1975, and maintained a tape ministry until his death. He has friends all over the world, having received phone calls to talk about theology daily. He loved reading, learning, researching, sharing and collecting religious material. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Leona R. Southwick, in 1996. He is survived by his children, Carol J. DeKorte and her husband James of Central Point, Oregon; Philip R. Southwick and his wife Linda of Santa Maria; Wanda J. Stouffer and her husband Steven of Mill Creek, Washington and Paul J. Southwick of Penngrove, California. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He will be tremendously missed by his family and all who loved and knew him. Violet Mathews, age 93, of Mankato, died Thursday, December 22, 2011 at the Sterling House in Mankato. Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, December 29, 2011 at the Church of the Nativity in Cleveland, with Fr. Dennis Backer officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at the St. Peter Funeral Home/Klein Chapel, and will continue one hour prior to the service Thursday. Burial will be in Savidge Lake Cemetery in Cleveland.

Violet Marie Mathews was born to Arthur and Emily (Stepanek) Sellers in Berwyn, Illinois. She was baptized at St. Mary of Celle Catholic Church in Berwyn. She graduated from Burbank High School in Burbank, California. Violet was united in marriage to Theodore Mathews in 1938 in California. She was a homemaker for most of her life.

Violet loved playing tennis, longbow archery, jazz music, cooking, tending to her flower gardens, and cats. She also was an accomplished pianist and was an ancestor of the classical composer, Antonin Dvorak. Most of all, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Violet is survived by three sons, Ted “Ken” (Karen) Mathews of Madison Lake, Richard (Sandra) Mathews of California, Donald (Susie) Mathews of California; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one future great-grandchild; many nieces and nephews; and special cat “Bunny”.She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted in 1991; daughter, Janet in 1980; two sisters, Dorothy and Merle.

Lois Alida (Mitchell) Farmer was born May 17, 1918, to John Logan and Alma Alida (Warner) Mitchell in Glendale, Calif. She lived her first seven years at Palmdale, Calif., where her parents owned a pear orchard. She attended the first half of first grade at Palmdale Grammar School.

In 1926, the family moved to Burbank, Calif., and she got her education there. She graduated from Burbank High School in 1936. She attended Sawyer’s School of Business in Los Angeles and worked for a lawyer in Los Angeles until 1938. After a month’s vacation with friends in Arizona, she returned home and worked two seasons at Andrew Jergens.

In 1939, she got a job at Arrow Sash and Door Mill in the office, and a friend introduced her to Carlyle Linwood Farmer, whom she married on June 7, 1940. Three children, John Farmer of Springville and Sandra Leon (Mike), both of Springville, and Evelyn Juanita Brubaker of California; seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren, are the result of this marriage, and survive her.

She was a member of Magnolia Park Community Church from 1927 to 1947. In August 1940, they moved into a new home at 610 N. Sparks and in August 1946, moved out to 10330 Lorne St., in Sun Valley, Calif. In 1947, they joined St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, where she was church secretary for many years.

She was a Girl Scout leader and a Cub Scout den mother. During World War II, she worked as a Final Inspector for Menasco Manufacturing Co. for 10 months in 1944. She joined Tolecca Parlor No. 279 Native Daughters of the Golden West and was president in 1957-1958.

She was inspector of an election precinct from 1950 to 1981. She also served her 21 days on Jury Duty. In 1974, she was baptized in Jesus’ name at the Norman Pentecostal Church and attended Victory Tabernacle in Burbank, Calif., from 1974 to 1981.

In 1981, she and her father moved to Springville, to be near her daughter. She received the Holy Ghost in March 1978 and attended Life Tabernacle in Springville. She received a refilling of the Holy Ghost in September of 1989, where she is still a member.

Lois loved to travel. She had taken Sandra’s six children on a trip when they were 11 years old. She had been in nearly every state in the U.S.A. including Alaska and Hawaii several times, Europe five times, Asia, Africa, and Panama Canal, South Sea Islands and South China Sea, and finally Canada and Mexico. Her last trips were to Spain in 1990 and Blue Danube in 1993. Later, her eye sight became so bad, that she was content to stay home.

Her last job was working as a school crossing guard for the Los Angeles Police Department from 1969 to 1978. Lois, age 90, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at 12:15 a.m. at the Bedford Regional Medical Center, Bedford.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009, at 12:00 noon, at Life Tabernacle in Springville, with Pastor Douglas Kelley officiating. Burial will follow at Springville Christian Cemetery. Friends may call on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until service time at noon at Life Tabernacle. Rowen Zipfel passed away peacefully at his home in Burbank, after a long illness, May 23, 2011. His entire immediate family had gathered the day before to be with him.

Rowen was 93 years old and had been married to the love of his life, Bettie for 68 years.

Rowen was born August 15, 1917 in Bakersfield, California. When he was of Junior High age, he attended John Burroughs Jr. High and later, graduated from Burbank High in the winter of 1936, where he was active in football and other sports and activities.

Rowen was a journeyman plumber for well over 40 years. Even in his retirement, he was always busy. He was a talented artist and has produced many watercolor paintings. He did wonderful leather work and also could build or make just about anything out of wood. He was very mechanical and could fix “whatever needed fixing”…He loved music and was a wonderful dancer. In his younger years, he was also an avid horseman and loved to fish. He was a wonderful storyteller to his daughter and his grandchildren. He was his family’s hero. And…he absolutely LOVED Ice Cream and Apple Pie! (Apple Pie was his Birthday Cake of Choice for years!)

Rowen was pre-deceased by his Mother, Mabel Dunham, Father Joseph Dunham, brother Donald Zipfel BHS ‘33, brother, Robert Zipfel BHS Summer ‘36 and nephew, Daniel Zipfel.

Rowen is survived by his wife Bettie Zipfel, his daughter Pam Zipfel Kirkwood BHS ’64, Son-in-law Jon Kirkwood BHS ’64, Granddaughter Kirsten Kirkwood JBHS ’97, Grandson Kris Kirkwood JBHS ’97, Great-Grandsons Caleb Cook-Wickline, Kristian Rowen Kirkwood, Sister Patricia Goodman, 2 Nephews and 3 Nieces.

Rowen was loved and treasured by his family and friends and will be missed so very much. We were all so fortunate to have had him in our lives.

Mildred Louise Bachich, 92, passed away at home Thursday with her daughter by her side.
She was born at home on the family farm in Lyle, Minn., the second youngest of seven children born to Ralph Garfield Davis, and Nellie Viola (Siberling) Davis.

At the age of 6, her family moved west. They settled in Burbank, Calif., where she graduated from Burbank High School.

During WWII, she was among the cadre of women famously referred to as Rosie the Riveter. She worked at the Lockheed Boeing plant in California, where she wired Bombardier doors. During these years she married Robert Price, and gave birth to a daughter, her only child. They divorced after a couple of years.

In 1946 she married Fred Bachich, her lifelong companion. He was a mining supervisor and leased mines throughout the west. With her adventuresome spirit she loved her new life living in many remote areas in California, Nevada and Idaho.

With her sense of creativity and decorating, she was the consummate homemaker. She was an accomplished seamstress, making everything from drapes and upholstering furniture, down to wardrobes for the smallest storybook dolls. She also enjoyed needlework and excelled at knitting and crocheting, all of which she did throughout her life. She was a lifelong, avid reader, and always challenged herself with the hardest of crossword puzzles.

She loved their retirement years, back in the wilderness of Idaho, where they started their married life. They lived in the small town of Yellow Pine for almost 20 years, before moving to be closer to their daughter in Oregon. During those years she was known as the Hedda Hopper of Yellow Pine, writing articles for the Yellow Pine Gazette, a monthly newsletter of happenings in the surrounding area.

She thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor activities her life offered. She loved fishing, and was proficient in the art of fly-fishing, and even made her own flies. She made picnics of wood cutting expeditions, laying in their winter supply. Yearly vegetable gardens and fresh eggs from her chickens were a treat in the remote backcountry.

During her years in Oregon, she particularly enjoyed her gardening, and was known for her beautiful roses. She loved spending time with her family, especially summer trips back into Yellow Pine, and to Gold Beach, on the southern Oregon coast where her granddaughter and great-grandchildren lived. Always a cat lover, her current companion was a beautiful rag doll named Tazi.

She was proud to be a member of DAR (Daughters of the Revolution), which she joined along with her daughter and granddaughter.

Millie is survived by her daughter, Beverly Wilson of Salem; grandchildren Kristin Nyeland of Gold Beach and Erik Nyeland of Salem; and great-grandchildren Garrett and Raef Williams of Gold Beach.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Leslie, Loren and Norman Davis; three sisters Alice Schroeder, Irma Sinclair and Audrey Trout; and husband Fred Bachich.
She was well loved; much admired and will be missed forever.

A memorial celebration will be held in Yellow Pine, Idaho, at a later date this summer.

Bobby owned San Fernando Sheet Metal for many years and was an active member of the Elks Club. Bob loved golf, animals (raised pidgeons) and was very interested in the stock market.

He was survived by his wife Doris Farmer Zipfel and his son Robert Daniel Zipfel, his granddaughter Stacey Maureen Zipfel (all of Sylmar, CA), his brother Rowen D. Zipfel of Burbank, CA, his brother Donald C. Zipfel of Granby, Connecticut and his sister Patricia Dunham Goodman of Grants Pass, Oregon.

Paul C.R. Peterson, 82, died May 19, 2000.

Mr. Peterson was born in Chicago and moved to Burbank at 12 years of age. After graduating from Burbank High School he went on to achieve his bachelor's degree from UCLA and amaster's degree at Berkeley Baptist Divinity School.

At the age of 75 Mr. Peterson was awarded a PhD in theology from Fuller Seminary School. After founding San Francisco's Youth for Christ and serving as minister to San Rafael's First Congregational Church, he returned to Burbank to minister First Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Virginia; daughters, Pauline Cozzens and Debbie Lewis; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Barbara Peterson.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. June 10 at Calvary Bible Church in Burbank.

Service for Edward T. Swartz, 83, will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Loon Lake Congregational Church. Inurnment will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Swartz, who was born in Muskegon, Mich., died Monday. He had been a resident of Loon Lake since the early 1980s.

He graduated from Burbank High School in Burbank, Calif.

Mr. Swartz worked at Northrup Aircraft in El Segundo, Calif., and then with Lockheed Aircraft in Burbank as a jig and fixture builder in the tool division. He retired in the early 1980s.
His first wife, Jane Craddock, died earlier. His second wife, Josephine Swartz, died in 1993.

Survivors include two brothers, Paul Swartz of Colfax, Wash., and Delbert Swartz of Carlsbad, Calif.; and a sister, Grace Teter of Banning, Calif.

Madras resident Joan "Johnny" Adella West died May 29, 2002, at Aspen Court Senior Apartments at the age of 83.

Mrs. West was born Sept. 21, 1918, in Los Angeles, Calif., to parents Seymour and Nana E. (Shaw) Mallock. She graduated from Burbank High School in 1936. She married George I. West on Dec. 20, 1939, and in 1946 they moved to Portland, then to Madras in 1955, where they owned and operated Juniper Motel. They retired in 1972, but Johnny went on to work part-time at the Mod O'Day Dress Shop and Hatfield's Department Store.

She was an active lifetime member of the Madras Lady Elks, enjoyed bowling, was an avid sport fisherman and golfer and was known in many golf circles as a "lady that could hit the golf ball further and straighter than most men." In fact, George gave up golf early in their marriage because he couldn't beat her. She was very competitive and could be heard all over the golf course shouting a curse word when she hit a bad shot.

She was a very stylish and beautiful woman who participated in all the local fashion shows. She was active in the Madras United Methodist Church, where she was a member, and enjoyed reading to kids in local schools.

Survivors include her daughter, Georgia Ann Schell of Beaverton; son, Robert S. West of Milton-Freewater; seven grandchildren, Aaron Read, Beth Read, Steven West, Mike West, John West, Paul West, and Angie West. She was preceded in death by her husband George, and brother Robert Rose.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., June 6, at the United Methodist Church in Madras. Final disposition will be private for family members. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Memorial contributions have been suggested to the American Cancer Society or Mountain View Hospice.

ROBERT F. MAGEE A long time resident of Van Nuys passed away September 6, 2007, at the age of 89. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Mary; his three children, Judy (Steve), Tim (Julie) and J ohn (Rebeca); and six grandchildren, Justin, Jessica, Abigail, Ryan, Daniel and Sarah.

Robert graduated from Burbank High School, served in the military in WWII, earning a bronze star. He worked for Bank of America for 41 years. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed crossword puzzles and a good martini, loved to travel, but most of all he cherished his family. He will be deeply missed by all.

Services were held at St. Genevieves Catholic Church where he was an active member. Thanks to Palliative Care for their care during these last months. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Cystic Fibrosis Fund or Cure Autism Now.
