David Fogg passed away on Monday, January 10, 2022, at his Burbank home, from a heart attack. He was 56 ½. David was born on July 1, 1965 to Larry and Pat Fogg. He grew up in Burbank with his two older sisters, Grace and Lisa. David grew up attending Calvary Bible Church in Burbank with his family. As an adult he continued to attend there, and served in many leadership positions in the church over the years. For the last thirty years David was one of Burbank’s top selling realtors every year, along with his mother, Pat. The last several years they have been associated with Keller-Williams Real Estate. 

David is survived by his mother, Pat Fogg, of Spokane, Washington; sister, Grace Fogg Miranda (BHS ’79), of Sun Valley; sister, Lisa Fogg Cripps (BHS ’81), of Spokane, Washington; numerous nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces; and his former wife, Bridget Fogg. David’s father, Larry Fogg, passed away in 2000. 

Because David surrendered his life to the Lord Jesus Christ over thirty years ago his family has the assurance that he instantly went to Heaven yesterday when he left this life, and now will spend eternity with his Savior. (Romans 8:18)

Channel Islands Sales Manager/All-Around Great Guy Loses Battle to Cancer       

The surf world has lost another one of the good guys. Sadly, after a long, hard-fought battle against pancreatic cancer, Santa Barbara’s Mike Cobb has passed away. Remembered for his compassion, integrity and love of life, his place in the lineup will be greatly missed. He was only 51 years old.

The Sales Manager for Channel Islands Surfboards, Cobb was one of the lucky ones that found a way to blend a fulfilling career with his love for surfing.

“Mike was the man,” said Conner Coffin, who spent years with Cobb at Channel Islands. “He was one of those guys that always made sure the people around him were taken care of. He was just one of the nicest guys. It’s so heartbreaking; he had such a positive energy and he did so much good for other people.”

A regular in the water around Ventura and Santa Barbara, Cobb also made routine sojourns to Tavarua over the years, typically staying on the island during Dave Lester’s week in May.

“I was lucky enough to spend quite a few weeks with Mike on Tavarua over the years,” remembers Lester. “We became good friends. Mike was a great guy who took the time to get to know people. He really cared a lot about the Fijians on Tavarua. I spoke with Mike a few days before our trip this past May, unfortunately Mike could not join us this year, but he really wanted to come, not for the surf, but to see all of his Fijian friends. He loved the place and the people. That is just the way Mike was. Always a kind word for everyone. I am really going to miss him.”

As far as what kind of guy Cobb was, a telling post was made on his Facebook page shortly after his passing.

“He came up to me during a little surf trip on Tavarua in 2012 and said, ‘There is an unridden brand new Al Merrick 6’10” in my boardbag, I want you to go grab it, wax and ride it and have some fun at Cloudbreak,’ after he found out I didn't bring a shortboard and just two longboards on the trip,” writes Kieran Plim. “Who does that? Mick does. What also struck me most was that he had the time to chat and drink beer like a person I had known for 20 years, not to mention bringing out his secret collection of tequila as well one night. I know you are getting seriously barreled right now in the afterlife.”

"It is with great sadness to share that Richard Aleman passed away on October 17, 2016. Richard put up a good fight until the end and his sense of humor was on key always. One liners off the cuff and so funny during a difficult time. He had an amazing positive outlook and it was inspiring to encounter. 

 He enjoyed getting phone calls, video chats and text messages from all of his friends. He spoke of so many who kept in touch with him and he was so touched by people taking the time to come and see him before he left and staying in touch. Please keep his family in your prayers at this time. He will be truly missed by many."

Erik Anthony Riss, 51, of Lake Havasu City, died at 12:02 a.m., Sunday, April 10, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident in Parker.
 

Erik was born April 4, 1965 in Los Angeles, Calif. Erik has lived in California, Nevada, Wyoming and most recently, Lake Havasu City, where he enjoyed being on the water, boating and skiing. He worked as a plumber for Mohave Plumbing and Ideal Pools, and liked to post pictures on Facebook of the exotic pools he was working on. He also enjoyed spending time with his dad and family, having lunch dates with his daughters, riding his motorcycle and spending time with his girlfriend Julie, and their two dogs, Tyson and Jack. Erik liked to cook and grill and had many gatherings with friends, impressing them with his culinary skills. Erik was loved by many and will be truly missed.

Erik is lovingly remembered by his father, Gerard “Sweet Ol’ Bob” Riss of Las Vegas, Nev.; two sisters Diane Jackson and husband John “JJ” of Las Vegas, and Stacey Riss of Las Vegas; three daughters Roxanne “Roxy” Rede of Riverside, Calif., Tara Huesca-Riss of Portland, Ore. and Erika Huesca-Riss of Los Angeles, Calif.; two grandsons Isaiah Godinez and Xavier Godinez; and niece, Hilary Wood of Las Vegas.

He is preceded in death by his mother Audrey Riss and sister, Margie Riss.

Services will be at 1 p.m., April 22, at Lietz-Fraze Funeral Home in Lake Havasu City.

Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery in the Hollywood Hills, Calif., where he will be laid to rest with his mother and sister; at a date yet to be determined.

Services were placed in the care of Lietz-Fraze Funeral Home.

Michael Shannon Flynn passed away Feb. 9 2013, in Lake Havasu City at the age of 48. Mike, as he was known by many, or Shannon, as his family and close friends called him, was born Dec. 8, 1964, in Glendale, Calif., to Michael and Vickie (Oberholtzer) Flynn.

Mike lived in Burbank, Calif., then several years in Basalt Colo., then back to Burbank, before graduating from Burbank High School in 1983. He worked in the Air Conditioning Industry for over 25 years and most recently worked for Mercury Air from 2003, when Mike and his family moved to Lake Havasu City, until 2012. 

Among Mike’s many hobbies were Hot Rods and motorcycles, building several cars and bikes from the ground up. His love for old, classic cars led him to become one of the founding members of The Lucky Few Car Club in 2008, where he was known as "Stitch." He also loved boating on the lake and fiddling with guitars and guns.

Mike is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Kim Flynn, of Lake Havasu City; son, Shane Flynn, of Lake Havasu City; mother, Vickie Flynn, of Lake Havasu City; father, Michael Flynn and his companion, Nancy Seymour, of Burbank, Calif.; sister, Laury Spinelli and her husband, Gino, of Simi Valley, Calif.

A celebration of Mike’s life will be today, at 6 p.m. with Chaplain Kathy Kenney offering words of comfort. Viewing of Mike will be from 5 to 6 p.m.

Carl William Bailey, 17, died January 13, 1983 in a Glendale hospital. He was born in Burbank and lived here all his life. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Bailey; brother, Michael; two grandmothers and one grandfather. He was a senior at Burbank High School.
Rosary was 7:30 pm Sunday at the Valley Funeral Home. Mass was 10 am, Monday at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Interment was at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills.

FREAK GRIFFITH PARK accident leaves friends grieving.

What stands out in Carl Bailey’s senior class picture are the eyes and the mouth. That’s the way Carl’s family and friends and teachers remember him. “He was well-liked and popular in school, but not from being a top shot daredevil or from having a lot of girlfriends or from being a football hero.” Said Pippi Ramsay, Carl’s aunt.“I don’t know anyone who ever said an unkind word about Carl. He was really full of love.”

The 17-year-old died Thursday when his jeep overturned in Griffith Park. He and about 40 classmates had gathered at Crystal Springs Road and Zoo Drive to celebrate the start of a three-day weekend. Police say it was a freak accident. Carl was only driving about 8-10 miles when he started to turn, hit a patch of wet grass and rolled the car. He died instantly of a blow to the head. His passengers – two girls and a boy, all local high school students – walked away from the accident.

“The police told us there were no drugs, no drinking.” Ramsey said. “They went to the park because there is no place in Burbank for kids. These were good kids, the clean-cut kids who have cried out to the teachers, “There is no place for us to go- no movies, nothing.”

About 500 people, including 300 of his friends attended the funeral, one of the largest ever held in the city. A procession of 100 cars passed by the Burbank High School before Carl was interred Sunday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

His teachers say Carl was a good student who wanted to do something- he didn’t know what yet- in the medical field. He planned to attend college. Carls’s high school weight-lifting teacher, Frank Kallem remembers his student as “a real bright kid. He was just brilliant, that’s all.” “He was well-liked by the kids, he was real inquisitive and worked real hard.”

But he was self-conscious about his slight frame and wanted to build muscles so he could join the football team. “Carl had a weight-training set in his garage and he was a member of the YMCA. He went to the Y every day to work out, even after he had the weight-lifting class here.” Kallem said. He was a small kid, but he had a well-developed body. It was strong and healthy.

His classmates are still mourning Carl, Kallem said. “They’re taking it hard,” he said. “Young kids just don’t think that can happen to them. They think they are immortal. When one dies it’s just a shock to them, they just can’t fathom death. “His close friends still are broken up about it today. They are still tearful and quiet.” “He was interested in other people, genuinely interested. Kids can pretty easily spot who is sincere and who isn’t.”

Kallem had known Carl since he was about 8 years-old. The youth was Kallem’s assistant in an aquatics class. “He always willing to help you out. All the teachers liked him.” He said.

Todd Hershey took some of the same classes as Carl in the 11th grade and they became close because they shared the same interests in sports, cars, music and art. “He was the kind of person you would like immediately,” he said. “He was outgoing and friendly, always there for a friend.”

Though Carl never got big enough to play football, he excelled in individual sports. He surfed, bowled, hiked, golfed and skied, his friend said. But until a year ago he remained self-conscious, Hershey said. “He was shy with girls until recently,” his aunt agreed “He just started dating.”

He had just got his own phone. He paid his brother a nickel to answer the phone when he wasn’t there and his mother got him a special book to take messages. His younger brother, Michael looked up to him like an idol.

“He didn’t have one enemy in school. Everyone liked him,” said Teri Ramsey, Carl’s 18-year-old cousin. “Unless you really knew him, he was shy. But he had a sense of humor. He was having so much fun his senior year. He told me how he was starting to get popular with his jeep and about all the girlfriends he has.
This year he was especially conscious about his looks, especially his hair. If it was not brushed right he would take a shower and do it again. Carl played piano and loved new wave music, Ramsey said.

He started a silkscreen business in junior high school and charted the stock market as a hobby. He worked part-time as a driver at his father’s Burbank business, West Coast Propeller Co.

Carl is survived by his father, Keith Bailey, his mother, Teresa, and brother, Michael.

Burbank High School is accepting contributions in Carl’s memory for a scholarship fund. Anyone who wishes to contribute may contact Dr. Art Golden at the school.

Ralph Kemp, Jr, 34, died July 9, 1999. He was born in Littlerock. He was a longtime Burbank resident. He attended Ralph Waldo Emerson Elementary School, John Muir Middle School and Burbank High School, graduating in 1983. He worked as a theater projectionist.

He is survived by his daughter, Amber; sister, Michele; and grandfather. A memorial gathering was held July 24 in Palmdale.

Deanna Yates VanNewkirk, BHS 1983

Deanna VanNewKirk was diagnosed with Stage 4 Liver and Colon cancer about a year ago. She opted for some radical treatment and wound up at The Cancer Center of Chicago for surgery this past week. When they opened her up, they found additional tumors that were not present on her last cat scan. They closed her back up, canceled future chemotherapy treatments, and told her there was nothing more they could do for her. They put her on a commercial flight back to Phoenix last night and Hospice was waiting at her home in Anthem, AZ to help with the last days.

Deanna's family would like to share their eternal loving memory of their Mother, Daughter, Sister, Granddaughter, Niece, Cousin, and Friend. Deanna returned home to her Heavenly Father on February 24, 2012 after a battle with cancer.

Sherry Anne Entz died Wednesday, January 7, 2009. She was 44 years old when she passed. A lifetime resident of Burbank, California, Sherry died at UCLA Medical Center in the city of Santa Monica. Her cause of death was due to a short battle with Ovarian Cancer.

Sherry was born on September 24, 1964 in Burbank, California to Frank and Martha Valle. She was a 1983 graduate of Burbank High School and had a career in the Fiber Optic industry for over 13 years. She was married to Harold Hyatt Entz, Jr. on October 11, 1997. Together they were raising their three young children, Emily age 8, Hyatt age 7 and Ryan age 4, until she suddenly became ill.

Sherry was a devoted mother and wife; she loved her family and was a good Christian woman who was well known for her loving and generous heart and strong moral character.Sherry Entz is survived by her husband and friend Hank Entz, her children, Emily, Hyatt and Ryan. Also her parents Frank and Martha Valle, her siblings, Judy Ware, Richard Valle, Steven Valle and her mother and father-in-law, Harold and Esther Entz of Glendale.

The services were held at Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church in Glendale, California on January 13, 2009 and were officiated by Reverend Mark A. Weitzel. Her interment was at Forrest Lawn Memorial Park, Hollywood Hills.
