Kenneth Alan Weber , 58, of Fountain Hills, AZ passed away on July 7, 2007. He was born in Burbank, California on May 29, 1949 and graduated from Burbank High School in 1967.

In 2003, Ken moved to Fountain Hills to spend time with his sister and mother. He is survived by his caring sister, Sharon Weber of Fountain Hills, three cousins, Pat Toskes of Florida, Ginger VanAtta of Michigan, John Sponsel of Maryland, and his Aunt Dorothy Sponsel of Maryland.

Ken was predeceased by his father William Peter Weber in 1982, his mother Muriel Weber in 2007, and his brother William Ronald Weber in 1992. Ken was employed with Recovery Innovations of Arizona, Inc. (formerly Meta Services) for nearly 2 years as a peer mentor for people receiving services for chronic homelessness and substance abuse challenges. Ken loved to carry the message of hope and recovery to others both in his employment role and in the community.

He was also an avid sports enthusiast who loved to spend his free time watching football games with his close friend Rick Mollins of Fountain Hills. Ken was a loving and gentle soul who brought tremendous joy to the lives of many. A memorial service will be held on Friday July 13, 2007 at 10:00am at Church of the Ascension, 12615 N. Fountain Hills Blvd, Fountain Hills, AZ.

Carolyn S. Calkins, Mrs. Grant R. Calkins (nee Carolyn Sue Webb), 3734 Gleneagles Drive, Tarzana, died Saturday morning at the Medical Center of Tarzana from leukemia. She was born June 12, 1941 in Sheldon, Missouri and moved to Burbank in 1953. She was graduated from John Muir Junior High School and Burbank Senior High School. In 1963 she received a Bachelor of Science in Public Health from UCLA. She was married to Grant R. Calkins June 23, 1962.

Survivors are her husband, Grant; a nine-year-old daughter, Sandra Lynn; her mother and step-father, Margaret and William Gawthrop of Camarillo; a brother, Charles Webb of Van Nuys; a cousin, Mrs. Leo Palmer of Camarillo; and aunts and uncles and cousins in Missouri. Her father, Harold Webb, died in 1947.

Services 10:30 Tuesday, June 6, Church of the Hills, Forest Lawn- Hollywood Hills. Visitation from 4 to 9 p.m. on Monday.

Sharon Kay Flores, 48, died July 23, 2000, in Burbank. Mrs. Flores was born in Anderson, Ind. She was a Burbank resident for 40 years. She was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Matthew's LutheranChurch. She will be remembered for her commitment to aid all those in need.

She is survived by her husband of 28 years, David Flores; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa Flores and Erik Hansen; daughter and son-in-law Jamie Flores and Scott Meadows; daughters, Andrea, Darlene and Jackie; son, Christopher; parents, Arthur and Beverly Berg; sister and brother-in-law, Brenda and David Dyke; sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Ken Stonecypher; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, in Glendale. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Susan J. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Memorial service for Noel Thomas Weller, 57, will be later. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d'Alene is in charge of arrangements.


Mr. Weller, who was born in Reno, died Tuesday. He moved to North Idaho in 1991 from California. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Scottish Rite and was raised as a Theosophist (Universal Brotherhood).


Survivors include his wife, Nina; three sons, Michael and Gregory Weller, both of California, and Larry Weller of Guam; a daughter, Gloria Celeya of California; his mother, Jean Gullo of Arizona; a sister, Diane Burkes of Colorado; a half-brother, William Weller of California; and a half-sister, Doreen Morgan of California.

John Forbes passed away peacefully on May 3rd at the Palo Alto VA Hospice/Palliative Care Unit surrounded by his family. His final wish to be comfortable was more than met by the wonderful staff that cared for him during his final weeks.


John was born August 6, 1944 and raised in Burbank, California. After attending Pierce Junior College, John enlisted in the Air Force and served his country for four years, including one in Vietnam with a communication unit. Returning from Vietnam, he went to work for Pacific Bell. In 1975 John married Anita. They resided in Fountain Valley where they began raising their three children.


John enjoyed the thrill of racing, and while in the military, he raced motorcycles in Texas and Japan. During the 1970’s he raced V-bottom and tunnel boats in Southern California. In the 1980’s he slowed it down and began sailboat racing in Dana Point. John and family would actually win some regattas with their “kiddy crew”. Family vacation was something John always looked forward to. Some of his favorites were sailing to and around Catalina; trips to Yosemite, Hawaii, Italy, Ireland and Costa Rica; and a National Park road trip that included Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Badlands and Devils Tower.


In 1987 the family moved to Half Moon Bay, following his acceptance of a new position with Diasonics MRI, a company he had joined a few years earlier. He traveled to locations around the world helping troubleshoot installations of MRI machines. In 2000 he retired, following Toshiba’s purchase of the company and the closure of their South San Francisco office.


In retirement, John enjoyed photography classes at CSM and getting out into nature capturing its beauty on film. He volunteered at the Peninsula Humane Society, helping rabbits and guinea pigs find loving homes. He had been a member of the HMB Lions Club and was currently a member of the HMB I.D.E.S. Society. He enjoyed attending monthly meetings at the Pescadero Opera Society and gatherings of the National Brain Tumor Foundation in San Francisco. John looked forward to water workouts/aerobics at La Petite Baleen and the Mills Peninsula pools and he could be found most mornings for the past few years enjoying coffee at HMB Coffee Company.

It became evident during his 3 ½ year battle with brain cancer that the number of people impacted by this disease is rising, and some of the drugs used to help him near the end hadn’t been around when he was first diagnosed. John is preceded in death by his mother and father, Betty and Hollis Forbes of Granada Hills, CA. He is survived by his wife, Anita Forbes, and their children: Lisa and James Phillips, Jessica and Andy Forbes and Dana and Hugo Oregel, and grandchildren Ryan, Sarah, Aiden, Paxton, Trevor, Charlotte, Myla, Elizabeth, Rowen and Hannah. He is also survived by his sister, Cheryl Elm.

Anyone who had the privilege of knowing John knew him as a tender, home-loving family man with a dry sense of humor. He touched many lives and will truly be missed by his family and friends

A Celebration of Life gathering will take place on June 6th.

Barbara Jonkey Hastings, BHS 1965

It's with great sadness that I write to let you know that our classmate, Barbara Jonkey (Hastings), passed away this morning March 22, 2012 in her sleep from lung cancer. She did not tell friends, choosing to live her life to the fullest and always keeping a positive attitude that she would be fine and the cancer would be beaten. Barbara's father is currently in the hospital recuperating from surgery, so memorial services will be pending until he recovers. I will let you know as soon as I hear anything else.

TAYBACK, CO-STAR OF 'ALICE'

Vic Tayback, the actor best known as the gruff diner owner and cook Mel Sharples in the television comedy "Alice," died Friday May 25, 1990 of a heart attack in his Glendale home, officials said.

Tayback, 60, had a history of heart trouble and underwent triple bypass surgery in 1983.

"Tayback's wife, Sheila, (told police) he had gotten out of bed, walked a few feet and fell to the floor," said Glendale police spokesman Chris Loop. Tayback was in full cardiac arrest when paramedics arrived at 1:08 a.m.

He was pronounced dead at 1:56 a.m. at Glendale Adventist Medical Center.

Tayback was the only cast member of the 1975 film "Alice Doesn't Live Here Any More" to star in the television situation-comedy "Alice," which was based on the film. Tayback played Mel, whose penny-pinching and poor cooking were a running joke on the show, which ran from 1976 to 1985.

"I'm just devastated. I loved Vic very dearly and my heart goes out to Sheila and Chris," said actress Polly Holliday, who co-starred with Tayback as the wise-cracking waitress Flo on "Alice."

Tayback played supporting roles in a number of other films, including ''Papillon," "Bullitt" and "The Choirboys." His television movie credits include "They Call It Murder" (1971), "The Night the City Screamed" (1980), "The Jesse Owens Story" (1984) and "The Three Kings" (1987).

In the 1960s, he co-founded the Silver Lake-based Company of Angels theater group with Sally Kellerman and Richard Chamberlain. He was a member of the Actor's Studio for 20 years.

After the "Alice" series ended in 1985, Tayback starred in such plays as "12 Angry Men," "Death of a Salesman" and "Brighton Beach Memoirs."

As recently as May 12, he played a Lebanese immigrant in S.K. Hershewe's comedy "An Oasis in Manhattan" at the Venture Theatre in Burbank.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. of Syrian parents, Tayback attended Glendale Community College and the Frederick A. Speare School of Radio and TV Broadcasting. Before turning to acting full time, he was a bank teller and a cab driver.

"Everybody loved him," said Fred Amsel, Tayback's agent and friend of 20 years. "He was a first-class guy. He was a very compassionate man. He always had his hand out to help other people, and he always spoke his mind."

Tayback is survived by his wife, Sheila; son Christopher; mother Helen; sister Emily, and brother Joe.

Funeral services are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Incarnation Church, 1001 N. Brand Blvd., Glendale. Burial will be Wednesday at Forest Lawn Memorial-Park, Hollywood Hills.

Paul William Adler was born in Zion, Illinois on July 21, 1909. His family moved to Burbank, California in 1918. In 1927, he went to work directly after graduating from Burbank High School at Lockheed Aircraft as a machinist. He later worked for Mitchell Camera and Technicolor in Hollywood, California. In 1937, he co-founded Adel Precision Projucts Corp., subcontracting for the aircraft industry. He founded several other small companies and remained self-employed throughout his professional career as a machinist.

He was married to Theodora (Teddy) Buckles (1929) until her death in 1991. They had three children; Loretta, Valerie, and Jerry. Teddy was a member of the Eastern Star. Loretta was a member of the Jobs' Daughters and presently resides in Pollack Pines, California. Valerie became a teacher and presently resides in Torrance, California. Jerry passed away in 1958. At his death in Torrance, California, Brother Adler was 91 years old and leaves his two daughters, seven grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and two great , great grandchildren.

He was Initiated an Entered Apprentice Mason in Burbank Lodge on September 14, 1939, Passed to the Degree of Fellocraft on October 19, 1939 and Raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason on November 30, 1939. He served the Burbank Lodge as Master in 1946. He became a Master of the Royal Secret of the 32* of the Scottish Rite and a Nobel of Al Malaikah Shrine in 1943. He was president of the Burbank Shrine Club in 1947. He was a life-long devoted and active member of the Burbank Lodge until recent years when his health failed. It was his ectreme pleasure to attend, in 1990, the 90th anniversary celebration of the founding of Burbank Lodge No. 406.

Brother Adler passed to the Celestial Lodge on Easter Sunday, April 15, 2001.

Richard B. Sanfilippo of Cathedral City, California, passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2006 at the age of 62.

He was born in Jamestown, New York on June 20, 1943, the son of the late Joseph and Eva Benenati Sanfilippo. He moved to Burbank in 1951 where he attended school. He served in the United States Army from 1960 to 1963. He started working working at the Burbank Post Office as a letter carrier in 1963, was promoted to management and later worked in San Fernando Valley. He retired as a Manager from the Northridge Post Office in 1999. He moved to Cathedral City where he was an active volunteer for the Cathedral City Police Department's Civilians on Patrol.

He is survived by his wife, Carole of 40 years; his son, Tony of Fullerton; his daughter, Shannon and beloved granson Jordan of Encino; two brothers, Joe of Canyon Country and Bob of Fountain Valley. He was cremated and his ashes interred at the Riverside National Cemetery.

Helen Moody, 84, died September 7, 2001, at her home in Newport Beach.
Ms. Moody was born in Los Angeles County, California on October 4, 1916. She was a longtime resident of Newport Beach and Burbank. She was a graduate of Burbank High School, Class of 1934. She and her husband, Bill, owned and operated the W.R. Moody Trophy Company in Burbank and North Hollywood.


Ms. Moody is survived by her sons, Tom Moody and John Moody; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sister, Lorraine Clark. Services will be at noon Saturday at the Laguna Presbyterian Church on Forrest Avenue in Laguna Beach.
