Maynard Parker, who as editor of Newsweek helped transform the weekly newsmagazine from a digest of foreign and political events into a publication that put greater emphasis on science, religion, social issues and technology, died Friday October 16, at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan, New York. He was 58.

Parker, who had been suffering from leukemia for the past year, died of complications from pneumonia, said Richard Smith, the chairman and editor in chief of Newsweek. Parker re-entered the hospital in September after closing Newsweek’s cover story on the Starr report.

He was Newsweek’s editor for the last 16 years and helped to increase Newsweek’s total paid circulation and make the magazine more competitive with Time magazine. Time remains the bestselling weekly newsmagazine, but Newsweek narrowed the gap, creating real competition between the two publications. Newsweek’s circulation increased to 3.2 million in 1998 from 3 million when Parker took over as editor in 1982.

Maynard Michael Parker was born in Los Angeles on July 28, 1940. After graduating from Stanford University in 1962, he went on to Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism a year later, and started out as a reporter at Life magazine in 1963.

He moved to Newsweek in 1967, where he continued to cover Hong Kong and went on to become Saigon bureau chief. As bureau chief there and later in Hong Kong, he led Newsweek’s coverage of the Vietnam War.

He returned to the United States in 1973 to become managing editor of Newsweek International, a new global newsmagazine, and went on to be Newsweek’s national editor, assistant managing editor and then executive editor.

Sharon King Mortenson, died in Lehi, Utah on Thursday, October 6, 2022. Sharon was born on July 16, 1941, in Glendale, California to Carl Marcus and Virginia Bowen King. 

She received a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education at Brigham Young University, and taught third grade as a young adult. She was an accomplished vocal soloist, talented teacher, and gifted pianist for over 60 years. She toured Europe as the premier vocal soloist for the Brigham Young University Madrigal Singers. She sang the soprano solo for Handel’s Messiah with a full chorus and orchestra multiple times. In 1959, she was the lead role in the BHS production of the musical operetta “Rose-Marie.”

On June 6, 1964, Sharon married her eternal sweetheart, Jerry V. Mortenson. Together they raised 6 beautiful children and spent 58 wonderful years together. Sharon is survived by her husband, 5 children, 24 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren, as well as 4 of her 5 brothers.

Edward Thomas Case, 80, of Palm Desert, California passed away August 10, 2007 in Palm Dersert of a heart attack. Tom was born April 3, 1927 in Hollywood to Edward Case and Charlotte Ashurst. A graduate of Burbank High School. Tom served in the United

States Navy, before graduating from Woodbury College with an interior design degree. He later apprenticed as a make-up artist at Universal Studios, before embarking on a 50 year career in the film industry, specializing in women’s beauty make-up. Tom had a fantastic sense of humor and an infectious laugh, which brought joy to so many people. Famous for his practical jokes and witty comebacks, Tom was always the “life of the party.” He was a real people person and others just loved to be around him. He enjoyed life to its fullest and had the uncanny ability to make everyone feel important and special.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Elsie; sons Randy and Jeff; daughter Vicki; sisters Wanda Campbell and Linda Jordan; and grandchildren Matt, Kayla, Remy and Johnny.

Dennis L. Hawkins, 43, of Washington died Sunday at Washington County Hospital. Services will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Eden Funeral Home in Washington, with burial in the Elm Grove Cemetery. The Revs. Fred Bichart and Kelly Ellard will officiate.

Visitation began today. Friends may call on the family from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be left at the funeral home.

Mr. Hawkins was born July 28, 1945, in Glendale, California, son of Arthur and Isbel Mehrens Hawkins. He married Kathleen West November 3, 1972, in Sepulveda, California. He worked as an accounting technician for J.M. Swank Company in North Liberty. He served in the United States Navy for four years. He was a member of the Brean Fellowship Church.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Dennis Jr. and David, both at home; one daughter, Andrea, at home; one sister, Mrs. Barbara Wagner, of Simi Valley, California; and stepmother, Augusta Hawkins, of Burbank, California. Find A Grave Memorial

Rachael J. Trott, died May 4, 1997 in Walnut Creek, California, at age 89. She was born in Greens Fork, Indiana, and moved to Burbank, California in 1919, graduating from Burbank High and U.C.L.A. She taught school in Burbank for 4 years until she married her high school sweetheart and husband of 60 years, Fred Trott, in 1933.

Upon returning to teaching in Tulare County in 1948, she was soon considered to be a pioneer in the field of special education. She helped organize and served as president of the Tulare County Chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children. She became a school psychometrist, school psychologist and councilor. After moving to West Covina in 1956, she began work in special education in the Covina Valley Unified School District, eventually serving as Coordinator for Special Education. She was active in the Covina Soroptimist, Delta Kappa Gamma (Zeta Tau), and the Los Angeles County Administrators for Special Education in which she served as Legislative Chairperson and President in 1969, the year of her retirement. From 1969 until 1995, she lived in Morro Bay, and was active and held office in the California Retired Teachers Association, the League of Women Voters, Delta Kappa Gamma (Epsilon Delta), American Association of University Women and the Floral Design Study Club. Following the death of her husband Fred in 1994, she moved to Oakland, where she resided in active retirement until her health began to fail.

She is survived by her sons, Thomas F. Trott, M.D., Los Angeles and Michael Trott, Berkeley; as well as four grandchildren, John Matthew Trott, New York, Erika Trott, Oakland, and Sara Trott, Berkeley. She has been cremated and her remains will be scattered at sea near Morro Bay. An informal Memorial Service will be planned for later in the summer.

The family requests that instead of flowers, persons might wish to make a contribution to a scholarship fund for graduating high school students in San Luis Obispo. Donations made be to SLO County CRTA Scholarship Fund, on the check, a notation should be made “in memory of Rachael Trott”. Mike was a very kind, easy going, loyal, and likable person. He was a very good electrician. He worked for his brother, Kevin, at KB Electric for many years. It is unfortunate that we lost Mike at such a young age.

2 KILLED IN PLANE CRASH

INDIO, CA – Authorities are investigating a weekend plane crash that killed an ophthalmologist and his nurse as they returned from a clinic.

The victims were Dr. John R. Hushaw, 45, and Nancy June Duncan, 30, both of Palm Desert, Riverside County Coroner’s Investigator Bob Drake said. Hushaw had offices in Palm Desert and Yucca Valley and flew every weekend to the latter office, said Drake.

The bodies were recovered from Hushaw’s twin-engine Beechcraft Baron Saturday after an aircraft in the area picked up an emergency transmission, Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Keith Stinson said. Stinson said Hushaw and Ms. Duncan were returning from Yucca Valley to Bermuda Dunes Airport outside Indio when the crash occurred. They were last heard from about 1:30 p.m. Friday, when Hushaw radioed the Palm Springs airport tower that he had Bermuda Dunes in sight.

BODIES FOUND AFTER PLANE CASH

INDIO, CA – The bodies of a doctor and his nurse were found early Saturday, about 8 ½ hours after their plane crashed into the surrounding foothills Friday night, a Riverside County sheriff’s spokesman said. Dead are Dr. John R. Hushaw, the plane’s pilot, and Nancy June Duncan, 30 both of Palm Desert, said Keith Stinson. The victims and the twin-engine Beachcraft Baron were discovered at 3:30 a.m., 12 miles north of Bermuda Dunes Airport, Stinson said.

Deputies were notified of a possible plane crash at about 7:10 p.m. Friday by Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, which received a report of an emergency transmission from the plane, Stinson said. A plane from the Civil Air Patrol was dispatched to search for the plane and pinpointed the general area of the signal’s origin at about 9 p.m.

With electronic detection equipment, a ground patrol was sent into the area and eventually found the bodies. Weather conditions in the area were cloudy with a slight drizzle, Stinson said. Hushaw, 45, was an ophthalmologist with offices in Rancho Mirage and Yucca Valley. The cause of the crash was unknown and is being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration.

A memorial service was planned at 1 p.m. today at Palm Desert Community Church for Dr. John Richard Hushaw who died Friday in an airplane accident near Desert Hot Springs. A Palm Desert resident, he was 45. The Rev. Dean Miller was to officiate over the service.

A native of California, Mr. Hushaw had lived in Palm Desert for 14 years. He was employed as an ophthalmologist and eye surgeon, with practices in Rancho Mirage and Yucca Valley.

He is survived by four children, JohnD., Michael L., Christopher S., and Michelle L., all of Palm Desert; his father, Dale Hushaw of Arcadia; his mother, Hazel Hushaw of Palm Desert; one brother, Walter Hushaw of Boulder City, Nevada; and one sister, Dorothy Hekel of San Diego.

Manslaughter Charge Due

LAKEPORT – Felony manslaughter, drunken driving and hit and run charges were to be filed today with the Lake County district attorney’s office against a Fremont man who was allegedly responsible for the Wednesday death of a Konocti school teacher.

The charges were to be filed by the California Highway Patrol against David Ned McCann, 58, a retired contractor. McCann reportedly was driving his pickup on Highway 53 in Clearlake Highlands while under the influence of alcohol when he struck and killed Donna Hamilton, 26, Clearlake Park. She was riding her bicycle home from school.

The accident was near the site of a September 15 collision also involving McCann, who reportedly drove into the back of a Konocti school bus. Eight children were injured in the accident.

According to highway patrol reports, McCann had been weaving within his lane and onto to the shoulder of the road prior to the September accident. He apparently failed to see the stopped school bus waiting to turn and hit the bus “without attempting to slow or stop, “the report says. 

McCann was cited for drunken driving by the highway patrol. McCann was booked into the Lake County jail after the Wednesday accident.

LOWER LAKE – A memorial service has been held for Donna Lynn Hamilton, 26, of Clearlake Park, who died last week after being struck by a pickup truck.

A native of Glendale, she lived in Lake County two years. She was a fifth grade teacher in Konocti Unified School District.

She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hamilton, Burbank. Services were at the Methodist Church in Santa Rosa, with cremation following. Jones and Lewis Mortuary in Lower Lake was in charge of local arrangements.

Peter Louis Franchino, 78, of Grass Valley, CA went to his forever home on August 21, 2022 in Ventura, CA.

Peter was born January 23, 1944 in Little Falls, NY to Peter and Sophie Franchino.

He attended Burbank High School in California and served in the U.S. Army.

He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara, raised his family in Saugus, and served at Grace Baptist Church.

In 1995, they moved to Grass Valley and opened Elam Biggs B&B.

He was a design engineer, innkeeper, magician, surfer and motorcycle rider. Most importantly, he was a loving husband, proud dad, and Silly PaPa.

He is survived by his wife Barbara, children Julie and Devin, grandchildren Kyle, Mitchell and Simone, sister Angela, nephew Eric (married to Jessica), and niece Vicki.
