Guy Edward Gingell, BHS 1966

Guy Edward Gingell, BHS 1966

February 28, 1948 - July 23, 2025

Guy Edward Gingell, a father, grandfather, teacher, and coach, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2025 at the age of 77. Born on February 28, 1948, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Herbert Gingell and Ruth Smythe, Guy spent most of his formative years in Burbank, California, where he developed a lifelong love of sports, education, and community.

A proud graduate of Burbank High School, Class of 1966, Guy was a natural leader and beloved classmate. He served as captain and quarterback of the B squad football team, was crowned Homecoming King, and was affectionately voted "Class Flirt" by his peers -- a title he wore proudly. Guy was always holding court and telling a joke.

In 1971, Guy married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Miller and in 1981, they welcomed their daughter Shannon. Guy embraced fatherhood with the same energy he brought to his teaching and coaching career, often having Shannon as his assistant manager of his many teams, traveling to Hawaii, San Francisco and many other places for tournaments.

Guy's professional calling was in education and coaching. After spending several years snow skiing and water skiing in Lake Tahoe, he began his career at Harvard-Westlake School. After relocating to Washington State in 1979, Guy continued to shape young lives at Lakeside School and later Overlake School in Seattle and Redmond. A gifted and passionate coach, he led teams in football, basketball, and lacrosse. In the 1990s, he founded Lacrosse Northwest on the Eastside, helping to grow the sport he loved and mentoring countless young athletes along the way.

In 2011, Guy moved to Walla Walla, Washington, to be closer to Shannon and his two grandchildren, Hadley and Jameson. In Walla Walla, Guy continued his commitment to community service as president of the Walla Walla Sheriff's Foundation from 2014 to 2015. Under his leadership, the foundation helped secure police K-9 units and worked to reduce gang membership in the Walla Walla Valley—efforts that reflected his lifelong dedication to safety, mentorship, and service.

Guy will be remembered for his infectious sense of humor, his booming voice on the sidelines, and his belief in the potential of young people. He touched countless lives through his teaching and coaching and his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

He is survived by his daughter Shannon (husband Bowe), grandchildren Hadley, Jameson and Jackson, his beloved dog Annie, many nieces and nephews in California, and countless former students and athletes.

A private celebration of Guy's life will be held at a later date at Zephyr Cove on Lake Tahoe. "Coach Gingell" was truly one of a kind, and he will be missed.

Pamela Ann Grueter Dito, BHS 1972

Pamela Ann Grueter Dito, BHS 1972

September 21, 1954 - February 2, 2025

After spending Friday surrounded by her granddaughters, Mom unexpectedly left us on February 2nd, 2025 at our home in San Mateo where she had lived for almost 40 years and raised four children. She was a strong woman and a two-time Breast Cancer survivor.

Mom was born in Muskegon, MI on September 21st, 1954. She grew up in Burbank, CA and graduated from Burbank High in 1972. Adored by all who knew her, she was Head Cheerleader, Pep Squad Leader and Homecoming Royalty. Mom moved to the Bay Area in the late 1970s and has lived here ever since.

She was preceded in death by her father Robert Grueter, her mother Hilda Grueter (nee Pohl), brother Corby Grueter and brother Robert Grueter. She is survived by her brother Barry Grueter (Carmela) and niece Lindsay Gruschow of Senoia, GA (brother Corby's daughter).

Mom now awaits her husband of 42 years Steve, sons Dominic, Scott (Heather), Danny (Kryssa), and daughter Felicia (Kevin).

She raised four active kids, carting them between school, sports and appointments all while working at United Airlines. Probably every kid from elementary school to high school rode in, or recognized our big green van known as "Pam's Van".

Mom has four grandchildren whom she showered with love, affection and treats: Kamila (7), Sawyer (7), Kamden (5), and Kambelle (3). Oma, as she was known to her grandkids, was the best grandma a kid could ask for. She will be greatly missed and leaves a void that will never be truly filled. She will surround them with precious memories and remain in their hearts.

After we were grown, Mom was the quintessential animal lover and lived every day for her dogs. Most recently she was mother to Axel and Darla and grandma to Leo (all three mini dachshunds). She was a regular at Seal Point Dog Park, and on the paths between Seal Point Park and Bridgeview Park on the shore of the San Francisco Bay. You could also find her at dachshund meetups in the Bay Area. She is reunited with her beloved dog Beauregard (basset hound) from childhood, and these dear pets we had growing up who all loved mom unconditionally: Karl (mini dachshund), Milli (English bulldog), Juno (labradoodle), Tiger (tabby cat), Penny (black lab), and Mr. Turtle (turtle).

For 30 years she worked as a Gate Agent at San Francisco International Airport where she helped countless travelers on their journeys. The majority of that time was with United. With a friendly face, quick mind, beautiful smile, and natural instinct to help others, she excelled at her work and took great pride in what she did. She was beloved and trusted by her coworkers, with whom she remained friends and saw regularly in retirement. She stayed active in retirement by providing comfort, companionship, food, treats and support for pets whose parents were away. She was a trusted petsitter who went above and beyond to ensure that pets were cared for and comfortable.

It’s difficult to summarize all the things Mom loved. She loved travel, baking, jigsaw puzzles, trying new foods and going out to eat. She loved making candles and often gave them as gifts to friends and family. She loved Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks, both of which she saw in concert recently. She loved the TV shows Big Bang Theory and Expedition Unknown. She loved her Agatha Christie mysteries, Paranormal shows, and PBS Masterpiece programs. She was an avid watcher of all sports, and yes, even professional wrestling! She loved watching TV during quiet evenings while making dinner and relaxing with us and the pets. She loved going to the movies with her grandkids, watching their performances and taking pictures of the silly things they did with her. She looked after her kids, making sure we were fine and healthy and that we got home safely. She cared for us so much and so constantly that the true magnitude is only felt now that she is gone.

Growing up and sailing with her family on the beaches of Southern California connected Mom to the ocean. She loved it and sought the water wherever she lived and traveled. She would often say how much peace it brought her to be near a body of water. Her remains will ultimately join those of her parents and brother Corby in the Gulf of Mexico off Anna Maria Island in Florida. Although her home was here in California, she yearned for the warmth, sunshine, and beaches of Florida. We are joyous that she will finally live her dream.

Please join us in celebrating our beautiful Mom on Saturday, February 15th, 2025 from 1pm-5pm at the San Mateo Garden Center (605 Parkside Way, San Mateo, CA 94403).

In lieu of gifts, please consider making a donation to the Peninsula Humane Society.

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Michael Abram Nugent, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, educator, coach, referee, mentor, friend, and dedicated sports enthusiast, on June 13, 2025, at the age of 78. He leaves behind a legacy rooted in learning, influence, discipline, teamwork, guidance, fairness, support and an unwavering passion for sports.

He was born on September 6, 1946, in Paterson, New Jersey, Mike dedicated his life to his passion for learning and teaching. As a proud “Bulldog” by way of graduating from Burbank High (1964) and the University of Redlands (1969), he found his true calling as a teacher and “Bulldog” at Bowman High School. There he took immense pleasure in shaping young minds, fostering critical thinking and supporting teens on their journey to adulthood. While receiving the Teacher of the Year award from the Hart District in 2003 was a point of pride, it was surpassed by the profound satisfaction of seeing his Bowman students graduate and successfully transition into adulthood, many of whom he maintained contact with for years.

Outside of academia, Mike's greatest enjoyment stemmed from his lifelong involvement in sports as a player, coach, referee, and all-around supporter. He was a highly respected basketball referee for four decades and an acclaimed coach, allowing him to instill principles of fair play, discipline and teamwork in generations of athletes. In recent years, he took immense pride and delight in cheering on his grandson Robert across various sports, including football, basketball, baseball, soccer and track.

Mike was a natural mentor who found great satisfaction in guiding, coaching, advising and supporting others. He seamlessly combined his pedagogical wisdom with the values of sportsmanship; using this unique approach to help others navigate challenges and discover their full potential, both in and out of the classroom and on and off the court.

In 2019, The Santa Clarita Signal published an article, “The Man Behind the Whistle”, capturing the essence of Mike Nugent.

Mike is survived by his loving children, Vivian Forr, Tami Nugent, Leigh Bissell and Ryk Comerford; his cherished grandchildren, Robert Nugent, Kierstin Wilcox and Easen Bissell; his adored great-grandchildren, Carson and Emerie Wilcox; his admired brother Bob Nugent; beloved nephew Robert Nugent, dear niece Nicole Nugent and his treasured (former) wife of 41 years Judi Nugent. He also leaves behind a vast network of former students, colleagues, friends and sports fanatics whose lives were profoundly impacted by his passion and spirit.

A Celebration of Life will be held on August 10, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Burbank VFW 1006 W. Magnolia Blvd., Burbank California. Guests are encouraged to wear sports-themed attire, with Lakers, Dodgers, USC, UCLA or Rams gear being a favored choice.

To donate, please make checks payable to Bowman High School and mail them to: 21508 Centre Pointe Pkwy, Santa Clarita, California 91350.

Barry Walter Collins, BHS 1965

Barry Walter Collins, BHS 1965

September 7, 1946 - July 31, 2022

Barry Collins passed away on July 31, 2022 in Sacramento, CA with his wife and daughter by his side.

Barry was born in Glendale, California to Velma and Marshall Collins.  He grew up in Burbank, California where he began surfing (and sometimes attended Burbank High School).  He continued his studies at San Diego State University (because he could surf there), graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and then went on to Cal Poly Humboldt completing a Master’s degree in Fisheries Biology.

His career began in 1976 working as a biologist for California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) on the East Walker River.  But he shortly found himself in the California Delta working on the Striped Bass Study tagging stripers, documenting harvest rates, and doing population estimates.  He also supervised the Fish Facilities Program and the Fish Salvage Operations staff at the Skinner Delta Fish Protective Facility.

Barry met his wife, Judy Tengbom, when she worked for him as a fisheries technician. They were married in 1979 beginning 43 years of adventures and life together.  When Barry was not working, their family spent time on the Delta islands hunting ducks or camping in the Sierras.  He passed his passion of the outdoors onto his son, Reed Collins, teaching him how to fly-fish and tie flies, how to set up a backcountry camp, and how to select the best surf waves; these are all pastimes Reed still enjoys today.

In 1991, Barry and his family decided to move from Stockton to Humboldt County where Barry continued his career at CDFW working on the Natural Stocks Assessment Project; he then moved into the Fisheries Restoration Grant Program that supported salmon and steelhead habitat restoration projects up and down the northern California coast.  During these years on “take your daughter to work day” he brought his daughter, Alison Collins, out to count juvenile Chinook salmon and steelhead in the local rotary screw traps.  This sparked her interest in fisheries and led her to pursue a career as a fisheries biologist.  Today she works in the California Delta on many of the same projects that her father worked on.

Barry had so many different passions during his life.  He most enjoyed backpacking and fly fishing in mountain streams.  He loved duck hunting and trap and skeet shooting.  He enjoyed delta blues and played the guitar and mandolin. He loved taking and developing his own photographs, especially black and white photography.  He was a surfer in southern California and a golfer in northern California.  He studied astronomy and was building his own telescope.  There were many nights spent with family and friends looking at the stars and identifying the constellations and galaxies.  He also had a passion for baking bread and we will always remember his delicious focaccia.  Thank you, Barry, for enriching our lives in so many ways.

Barry is remembered by his colleagues and friends as a good person, an inquisitive scientist, fun to be around, direct but constructive, possessing a witty dry sense of humor, and one who was committed to seeing salmonid restoration projects implemented.  Memories being shared by friends and peers have created a beautiful tribute to a man that made an impact on so many people in his life.

Special thanks to friends and caregivers who helped Barry live his best life including Corey, Dusty, Kyle, Doreen, Leonard, Cadine, Shaquille and Adult Day Health Care of Mad River.

Barry was preceded in death by his father, Marshall Collins, and mother, Velma Collins.

Celebrating his life are his beloved wife, Judith Tengbom, his daughter Alison Collins (Corey Phillis and granddaughter Kira), his son, Reed Collins (Sally), his brothers, Fred Collins and Ray Collins and nephews Brian Collins (Chandra), David Collins and John Collins and their families.

Tom Christopher, BHS 1985

Tom Christopher, BHS 1985

Posted on Facebook by Tom's brother Douglas about 14 hours ago.

Dear Friends, it is with a heavy heart that I announce that my brother Tom Christopher passed away suddenly today. Tom was a Christian and lived as one to his family, loved ones, friends, and clients - loving God and loving others.

He loved and cherished his wife of 30 years, Heidi, and could never stop talking about his boys Travis, Adam, and Michael. Please pray for God’s true comfort and wisdom for Heidi and the boys. Tom and Heidi just celebrated their 30th anniversary with a cruise to Alaska. They spent time with each of their boys together and in recent trips to see Travis’ band in SF, Michael’s last hockey game in Missouri, and to see Adam pitch in Utah less than two weeks ago.

Besides being my brother and friend, Tom was a great son to Janice Christopher, a twin brother  (younger by three minutes) and best friend to Margaret , and caring brother to Cathy. He was an amazing uncle to Tommy, Patrick, Cami, Angela, Kiley, and Alexis.

Tom’s early accomplishment was bicycle motocross NBA District X #1 for the years 1979 and 1980. He won and placed in several nationals in the NBA, ABA, and NBL among sanctioned bodies.

Tom played football (League Champions) and threw shotput (a CIF leader) at Burbank High School. He played football at CSUN and was a member of Csun Zeta Omicron Pi Kappa Alpha (stayed involved for decades).

In the late 80s and early-to-mid 90s Tom learned  the Chinese street fighting art of Kung Fu San Soo where he earned a Black Belt (likely more than one).

Tom was an attorney who would never give up and eventually settled down to being a Trust attorney with his own Chrisopher Law Group in Porter Ranch.

There is much more. I will miss Tom greatly.

I have comfort that Tom loved Jesus.

Services could be this weekend. I’ll follow up with day and time when we know.

Karen Lovina Richardson Nelson, BHS 1962

Karen Lovina Richardson Nelson, BHS 1962

April 2, 1944 — June 25, 2025

Vidor, Texas

Karen Lovina Nelson, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and devoted service. Karen was born on April 2, 1944, in Burbank, California, to Elwood and Marie Richardson. Raised in Burbank, Karen graduated from Burbank High School in 1962 and went on to attend Brigham Young University in both Provo, Utah, and Laie, Hawaii.

In 1965, Karen met the love of her life, Clyde Nelson, at a church dance. Their courtship included date nights at Bob’s Big Boy where Clyde charmed Karen with his stories and humor over burgers, shakes, and fries. Karen and Clyde fell in love and were soon engaged, leading to their marriage later that year in the Los Angeles Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on October 28, 1965. Together, they built a strong and loving home, raising six children with care, commitment, and enduring values.

Karen dedicated her life to her family and her faith. As a homemaker, she nurtured her children with warmth and wisdom. She served faithfully in numerous church callings and was always a source of comfort and guidance to those around her. In addition to her work at home, she also supported her husband’s dental practice and later in life worked as a collector for an advertising agency, earning top collector several times.

Karen was a woman of many talents and interests. She enjoyed reading, drawing, quilting, cooking, and playing the piano. Her love of history and politics was matched only by her devotion to her country—Karen was a true patriot with a deep appreciation for American heritage. Ever curious and intellectually engaged, Karen kept up with the news daily and never turned down a challenging crossword puzzle or a competitive game of Skip-Bo.

Karen was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Elwood and Marie Richardson, her cherished daughter Lisa, and her beloved son Jason. She is survived by her devoted husband of nearly 60 years, Clyde Nelson; her children Garett (Rachel) Nelson, Michael (Jennifer) Nelson, Katie (George) Williamson, and Jeff Nelson; and many grandchildren who will miss her deeply.

A private memorial service in honor of Karen’s life will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 6198 FM 105, Vidor, Texas.

Karen will be remembered for her faith, her love of family, her quiet strength, and the countless lives she touched through her kindness and example.
