Kathryn Ann Burlan Bacon, BHS 1964

Kathryn Ann Burlan Bacon, BHS 1964

Kathryn (Burlan) Bacon (BHS Class of 1964) passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 24, 2026, just three short weeks after the passing of her beloved husband, David Bacon. Kathy was 79 years old.

Kathy was born in Los Angeles and her family moved to Burbank in 1953. She attended Monterey Avenue Elementary, Luther Burbank Jr. High and Burbank High School. Following graduation from BHS in 1964, she attended LA Valley College and worked for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. She later worked at the Marine Corps Base at Camp Pendleton, and served as a Public Information Officer for the U.S. Forest Service.

In 1967, while skiing at Big Bear, Kathy met the love of her life, Dave Bacon and together they built a life rooted in love, faith, and family. They welcomed three cherished children and, over the years, the family lived in Arizona, New Mexico, New Hampshire, Nevada and in both Northern and Southern California.

Kathy and her family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Their family’s faith was a source of great strength and gratitude – and provided many opportunities to be of service to others.

Kathy enjoyed reading, sewing, playing the piano, walking for exercise, church service, researching family history, and caring deeply for animals of all kinds. She also enjoyed learning Spanish and writing. Above all, she loved her family.

Kathy is survived by three children, nine grandchildren and two great grand-children. She will always be loved and remembered by her sisters who also attended BHS: Jane (Burlan) Cooper (BHS ’66) who is married to BHS ’65 grad Ron Cooper, and Nancy (Burlan) Fogel, class of ’75.

NOTE: From Kathy's sister original email:

It is very sad for me to be sending you the brief obituary of my older sister, Kathy (Burlan) Bacon who graduated from Burbank High in 1964. Especially so because she and her husband had just returned from a month-long European cruise with seemingly both in good health in early December when my brother-in-law Dave experienced some significant back pain which was diagnosed as stage 4 lung cancer just 4 weeks after their vacation. Then, tragically, my sister Kathy who had no known health issues died in her sleep only 3 weeks after losing her husband.

As you can imagine, this has been a very sad time for all of our extended family and friends.

I am sending you this obituary for the BHS Memorial page and I’m including two photos of my sister Kathy who was also my best friend. Thank you so much for saying the words below with the Burbank High School Community.

Sincerely,

Jane (Burlan( Cooper (class of ’66)

As a young man, David faithfully served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Netherlands from 1961 through 1964. This formative experience shaped his testimony and laid the foundation for a life guided by faith, service, and love for others.

Education was paramount to David, who earned his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Brigham Young University. He lived a life of honorable service, marked by loyalty, faithfulness, and integrity, standing as a true testament to his beliefs and the principles of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

For over three decades, David was managing partner at King, King, Alleman & Jensen Accountancy Corporation in Burbank, California. In this role, he earned the admiration and trust of countless clients who relied on his expertise to guide them through their finances. He also honored his call to be a Sealer in the Nauvoo Illinois Temple where he was able to seal and link couples and families for eternity in the House of the Lord.

Outside of work, David cherished time spent in nature, finding joy in hiking, fishing, camping, and golfing. He delighted in summer vacations with his family, creating memories that will be treasured for generations. A devoted baseball fan, he especially loved attending Dodger games, sharing his enthusiasm for the sport with family and friends.

David held his family close to his heart. He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Joyce Powers King, whom he married on September 11, 1964. Ronald Ramsay Hagg, BHS 1966

Ronald Ramsay Hagg, BHS 1966
January 6, 1948 - March 22, 2024

Ron Hagg, of Arroyo Seco, New Mexico died Friday, March 22, 2024 following a sudden heart attack. There are four things that can be said of him before anything else: he was a good human, he was creative, he loved all animals, especially dogs, and he walked his talk.

Hagg was born in San Diego, California, to Bertrand and Elizabeth Hagg who predeceased him. He spent his formative years in Burbank, California. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, his daughter, ; his son, his grandchildren, his nephews, and his beloved dog, Bailey. He is also survived by his many friends in Taos and elsewhere. Ron was known as a kind and good person, and there has been an outpouring of grief as the community reacts to this sudden loss.

Hagg attended Burbank High School, graduated in 1966 and went on to study at Humboldt State University. Eventually he became a writer and publisher. He published the Taos Rag, a local small magazine, between 2012 and 2016. He has written eight different novels, and his best known was turned into a screenplay and subsequently filmed; the movie is called "Escaping in Time" and can be viewed on YouTube. His novels are "Dreams of a New Day," "To Keep from Drowning," "Jesus of Kneeland," "In Too Deep," "Lost & Found," and "Crossing the Bridge." Hagg also wrote several short stories and plays. Hagg's creative endeavors also included photography, particularly animal portraits of both pets and wild creatures. His pictures of ravens are particularly noted for capturing the spirit of these intelligent birds.

In addition to his great love for Bailey, Hagg was a great advocate and friend to a shelter dog named Phineas, whom he visited every day, and would have adopted but for Bailey's health issues. No one has been more steadfast in showing love to this sweet dog. The community is still searching for a forever home for Phineas.

A life-long Democrat, Hagg was the type of person who rolled up his sleeves and did the work. Politics were more than just talk to him and he had the courage of his convictions. Hagg's activism extended to the human realm as well. He was a long-time volunteer at Shared Table and took it a step farther by pushing local officials to focus more on hunger and food insecurity in Taos. His friend, reports that, "As a result [of Hagg] the Town of Taos and Taos County officials are working cooperatively with local nonprofit food pantries and state and federal officials to increase food assistance resources in Taos County."

On a personal level, he was known to love swimming and camping under the stars. He had a quirky sense of humor and was fun to hang out with. All this plus a genuinely good character earned him a great many friends, some new and some lifelong. Hagg
wrote of a near death experience as a child. In his words: "When I was around six years old my family was in a cabin on a mountain lake [Lake Arrowhead]. I got a very high fever. … When I was under this incredibly high fever I entered a gray void – fog like place. I was floating and started moving through the void going faster and faster. As I was doing this my body became smaller and smaller. I was losing my body. The best part was that I was in a complete state of bliss. I remember that in this dream state I was very disappointed when it ended. I did not want it to end." He continues as follows: "When I was nineteen, I read the Tibetan Book of the Dead and it stated that the before entering the new existence there would be a gray void like place. I was only six years old, so I didn't have any preconceived ideas about all of this. Maybe because of this experience I am not afraid of death at all."

He was at peace with the human condition, but the rest of us will miss him just the same.

Debra Anne Winkler Ohanian, BHS 1971

Debra Anne Winkler Ohanian, BHS 1971

Debra (Debi) Anne Ohanian passed away on November 11, 2025, surrounded by her family and friends. Debi was born on June 28, 1953, in Burbank, California, to Eugene and Gladys Winkler. She attended Burbank High School, graduating in 1971. In 1973, she married her high school sweetheart, Mark Ohanian. Debi and Mark traveled the world together and lived in a variety of places along the West Coast.

Together, they built a family that was the center of their world. They raised their two sons, Josh and Chris, in Sebastopol, California, and found their greatest joy when spending time with family. Mark went to Heaven in 1998, leaving Debi to very successfully raise Josh and Chris on her own.

Debi was the best mom and grandma, sister and friend. She loved spending time with her sons and granddaughter, Aliyah, as well as with her sisters and friends. She was an avid athlete. She loved to swim, walk, fish, play baseball, tennis, basketball, golf, ping- pong and billiards. She was competitive, often dominating her sons in sports, but was always a gracious winner. She was also an avid genealogist, tracing her family back to before they came over on the Mayflower.

Debi loved all animals, particularly dogs and cats. She had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh and joke. She loved listening to and playing music. She really enjoyed spending time with her many friends. She spent time enjoying the sun, either in her pool or on her boat on Lake Sonoma. More recently, she loved to take Aliyah to the park with slices of bread to feed the ducks; something Aliyah will likely never forget. She was an excellent writer, wordsmith and poet. As her profession was court reporting, actively working until her passing, she always took pride in her writing and grammar. She taught her sons these skills at a young age as well. She was an amateur artist (painting and drawing) as well, although, some of her works were unintentionally quite Picasso-esque, which her family loved.

Debi was the best mom her two sons could ever have hoped for. Always telling them how much she loved them and how much they meant to her, and they always felt the same about her. She put both boys through college on her own, each graduating with multiple bachelor's degrees. She saw or spoke with both of her sons every day until her passing.

Debi is survived by her two sons, Josh and Chris, her granddaughter, Aliyah, her sisters Annette, Kathy, Jeanne, and sisters-in-law, Nancy and Priscilla, several nieces and nephews, and her cat, Biggy Smalls.

There will be a celebration of life ceremony at Hop Monk in Sebastopol on Saturday, January 24, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. We (Debi's family) invite anyone who would like to celebrate her life with us. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Peace of Mind Dog Rescue in Pacific Grove, CA, in memory of Debi Ohanian.

We will always love you, Mom, and will miss you always. You are the best mom in the entire world. We know that we will see you in Heaven when our time here is done.

Nancy Jean Baird was born on January 24, 1945, in Burbank, California, to William Vernon "Junebug" Baird Jr and Margaret (Morrison) Baird. She passed away on December 13, 2025, in Porterville, California at the age of 80.

Nancy grew up in Burbank California, graduating from Burbank High School in 1963, then moving with her parents to Strathmore, California. She first attended COS then graduated from Porterville Jr College in 1966, where she was a proud cheerleader. She then began working several jobs including an escrow company & Jostens. She then served as Secretary to the Strathmore High School Superintendent/Principal. Nancy also helped lead and chaperone the Friday Night Live group, guiding students through leadership activities, community events, & positive youth development. After 31 dedicated years of service, she retired in 2008.

In 1969, Nancy made the profoundly selfless decision to place her son for adoption, giving him the chance to grow up in a loving family. Many years later, they reunited and spent the next 26 years building a deep and meaningful relationship. Her son, John McCormack, expressed heartfelt gratitude for her sacrifice, recognizing it as a gift that shaped his life and allowed him to grow up surrounded by family, love, and opportunity.

Nancy was deeply involved in her community and belonged to the Grand Ave United Methodist Church, SETCO Republican Women, Strathmore Town & Country Club where she served as President 2007-2010, Springville Community Club, and Friends of the Porterville & Strathmore Libraries, Exeter Women's Club serving as Corresponding Secretary and Vice President. Known as the most positive person in any room, Nancy remembered not only people's stories but their families as well. She could recall names and exact dates with ease. Her remarkable memory and attention to detail earned her the nickname "computer brain". She loved reading, always having a book checked out until her final days.

For the last 5 years, Nancy lived at the Serenity Senior Care Home in Porterville, where she received excellent care, found comfort, friendship, and a true sense of home. She especially loved that she lived in the same room her mother once had.
